한국계 미국인 (韓國系美國人 / Korean American[1])은 미국 국적을 보유한 한국계 미국 시민권자(U.S. Citizen)를 의미한다. 국립국어원

3.1. 출신지

한국계 미국인 조상의 출신 국가는 대한민국이 99% 이상으로, 한국계 미국인은 곧 대한민국 출신 미국인이라고 보아도 크게 틀린 말은 아니다. 그 밖의 경우는 하기와 같다. 근거

3.2. 인구

한국계 미국인을 포함해서 재미교포는 대한민국의 가장 큰 해외 한인 집단이다.[2] 하기에서 보듯 기준을 어떻게 잡느냐에 따라 다소 차이가 있으나 2020년대 기준으로 무려 약 250~300만 명 안팎이라 대한민국 광역시 인구급이다. #

2019년 미국의 통계 기준으로 약 1,908,000명 가량이다. 이는 타 혈통을 포함한 수치로, 통혼으로 중국계와 일본계 혈통을 지닌 한국계의 비율이 다소 있다. 2021년 미 통계청은 인구 및 가구 조사 자료에서 한국계 미국인의 수를 1,469,854명으로 제시했다. 이 수치는 하나의 인종 정체성(One Race)을 가졌다고 응답한 경우만 집계된 것으로, 위와는 달리 다른 민족 커뮤니티와 통혼 등의 이유로 하나 이상의 인종 정체성을 지녔다고 답한 경우는 제외되어 있다.

대한민국 외교부에서 파악하는 한국계 미국인은 시민권자 기준으로 2019년에 2,546,982명이다. 외교부가 파악하는 미국 소재 한국인 영주권자는 464,154명이다. 이외 미국에 거주 중인 재미 한국인은 일반 체류자 512,938명, 유학생 105,616명 수준이다.

외교부에서 발간하는 재외동포 현황에 따르면 2021년 미국에 거주 중인 재미동포는 2,633,777명이었다. 여기에는 미국 시민권자뿐 아니라 미국에 거주 중인 대한민국 국민(재미 한국인)이 포함되어 있다. 더 구체적으로 미국 국적의 미국 시민권자 동포는 1,529,855명, 한국 국적의 재외국민은 1,103,922명[3]이다.

2023년 이후부터는 외교부 산하에 재외동포청이 신설되어 해당 업무를 담당하며, 2,615,419명으로 비슷한 수를 유지하고 있다.

한국계 미국인의 이민은 20세기 초에 시작되어 1962년 이민법 개정 이후부터 본격화되어 여타 아시아계보다 역사가 비교적 길지 않은 편이다. 각 개인의 미국 이주 수준을 넘어 본격적인 대량 이주의 시발점은 1903년 하와이 사탕수수 농장 이주로 여겨지며 21세기에 약 100여 년의 역사를 지니고 있다.

한국 언론은 한국계 미국인이 큰 업적을 이루거나 사회적 명성을 얻을 경우, 대부분 당연하게도 그를 한국계 미국인으로 소개한다. 이는 한국 언론이 민족적 연관성을 강조하는 경향을 반영한다. 한국계 미국인은 일반적으로 이민 2세대 또는 이민 3세대에 해당하지만, 한국에서 태어나 성장한 후 성인이 되어 미국으로 이주한 이민 1세대는 미국 시민권을 취득하더라도 한국인 정체성이 상대적으로 강하다.[4] 또한 과거 입양 정책으로 인해 미국으로 입양된 한국인 아동이 약 11만 명에 달하며, 전체 한국계 미국인 인구의 약 10%를 차지한다는 통계도 있다. 따라서 한국계 미국인 사회는 출생 배경, 세대, 성장 환경이 매우 다양한 집단으로 구성되어 있다. 정체성 형성에는 가정 환경과 거주 지역의 영향이 크다. 부모가 한국어와 한국 문화를 가르치지 않고, 거주 지역이 미국 중서부 등 한인 비율이 낮은 곳이라면, 한국계로서의 자각이 약해진다. 반대로 로스앤젤레스(일명 서울특별시 나성구), 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 워싱턴 D.C., 버지니아주, 텍사스주, 조지아주 등 한인 밀집 지역에서는 한글학교와 한인회 활동을 통해 자연스럽게 한국 문화를 접할 수 있어, 한국인으로서의 정체성이 더욱 뚜렷해지는 경향이 있다.[5] 한국계 미국인이 정체성에 혼란을 느끼는 이유 중 하나는 외모 때문이다. 미국에서 태어나고 자랐음에도 불구하고, 외모로 인해 인종 편견이나 차별을 경험하는 경우가 있다.

한국인이 재미교포에게 가지는 가장 큰 고정관념은 재미교포들은 한국과 큰 접점을 갖지 않는 경우가 더 많고 외모만 한국인이고 정체성은 미국인이라는 생각이다. 이는 20세기까지의 재미교포들이 지금보다도 더 그런 생각을 하며 행동했기 때문이다. 당시 한국은 독재정권이 들어선 후진국이었으며, 재미교포들은 그런 상황에서 한국을 떠난 이들이 다수였기에 더욱 한국과의 인연에 그리 긍정적이지 않은 경우가 존재했다. 이미 2000년대 초엽에 들어선 먼나라 이웃나라같은 아동용 책에서도 다룰 정도로 한국내에선 상당히 퍼진 고정관념이지만, 교포가 한국과의 유대를 부정하는 것은 아니다. 영국계 미국인이 주로 자신을 영국인으로 생각하지 않는 것과는 달리, 한국계 미국인은 민족적 정체성과 한국 문화적 유대감을 유지하는 경우가 많다.[6] #

많은 재미교포 2세와 3세들은 어릴 때부터 인종차별과 소외를 경험하면서 자신이 백인 주류 사회와 다르다는 사실을 일찍 인식하게 된다. 성인이 되어서는 한국계 미국인으로서 아시아계의 권리 신장과 사회적 위상 강화를 위해 노력하는 경우가 많다. 대한민국과의 연결을 회복하려는 시도도 활발하다. 예를 들어, 한미연합회(Korean American Coalition), Korean American Council, Korean American Community Foundation 등은 미국 주요 도시에 위치하며, 한국계 젊은 세대의 사회 참여를 이끌고 있다. 이들은 고국방문단 프로그램에 참여하거나 한국어와 한국 문화를 배우기 위해 유학하기도 한다. 배우 팀 강(Tim Kang)이 연세대학교 한국어학당에서 한국어를 공부한 사례가 그 일례다. 일부 복수국적 미국 시민권자나 미국 영주권자는 대한민국 국군에 자원입대하여 모국과의 연대를 실천하기도 한다.[7] 한국계 미국인이 단순한 혈통적 연계가 아닌 실질적 정체성의 표현을 선택하고 있음을 보여준다. # #

5.1.1. 정체성 관련 재미한인의 고충

관찰에 의하면 대부분의 미주한인 2세들은 '고통스러운' 자기 정체성을 경험한다고 한다.

이중화 과정이다. 즉, 두 세계(한국과 미국)로 갈라진, 양 갈래로 갈라진 길에 서서 동으로 가야 할지 서로 가야 할지 모르는 이 과정은 고통스러운 것이고, 화나는 것이며, 앞으로도 끊임없을 것 같다. 어린시절의 나의 세계는 비한국계 미국인 또래들의 세계와 몹시 달랐다. 나는 내 친구들처럼 미국 땅에서 태어났다. 나는 그들과 함께 학교에 갔고, 또 그들과 놀았다. 그러나 우리의 현실은 여러모로 달랐다. 집에서 나의 가족은 피넛 버터와 젤리를 먹지 않았고, 저녁 식사 때 에그 스크램블을 먹지 않았으며, 토마토 수프나 마카로니 치즈 등을 잔뜩 쌓아 놓지도 않았다. 어릴 때 나는 가족과 학교에 관하여 내 또래 아이들과 다른 가치에 놓여 있었다. 나는 서로 다른 가치 체계의 산물이었다. 코리안 아메리칸 2세로서 어디가 고향 땅인가 하는 질문이 늘 나를 괴롭혔다. 내가 태어난 곳은 미국이다. 그러나 내 마음속 한구석은 늘 한국에 가 있다.[8]

2세들은 주류사회로부터 '타자'로 인식되면서 혼란스러운 정체성을 경험하는 순간 많은 2세들은 부모의 모국에 대해 매우 '수치감'을 느끼기도 한다. 어렸을 때 배운 한국말은 가족 내에서 부모와의 의사소통을 위해서만 쓸 뿐이고 공공장소에서는 한국말을 아예 모르는 것처럼 굴기도 한다.

모국에 대한 수치심과 부정적인 경험은 중국계나 일본계 이민의 후손들과 비교할 때 더욱 커지는 경우가 있다. 즉, 동아시아의 국가 중에서 중국은 문명의 기원지로, 일본은 근대문명과 경제 기적을 이룬 강대국으로 인식되지만 한국은 그들 나라의 속국 혹은 아류로 간주될 때 그들의 수치심이 더욱 증폭되는 것이다. '한국을 대변하는 독특한 문명이 있는가?'하는 질문에 그들은 매우 곤혹스러워 한다.[9]

중국계 미국인 친구가 도대체 너의 부모의 나라에 오리지낼리티(originality)가 있느냐고 물을 때마다 할 말이 없다. 수업시간에 배운 한국의 역사, 음악, 미술 등을 이야기하지만 솔직히 중국에 없는 것이 없는 것 같고, 모든 게 중국에서 건너왔다는 생각을 한다. 이름도 한문을 쓰지 않는가? 일본계 친구들은 우리를 늘 얕보는 것 같다. 일본 자동차인 도요타나 닛산 등은 베스트 퀄리티로 인정받는 반면, 현대 자동차는 못사는 흑인들이나 히스패닉 애들이 타고 다니는 자동차다.[10]

이러한 자기 방어적 수치감은 직접, 간접적으로 경험하는 인종차별에 의해 가속화되기도 한다.

이민자들의 미국 문화 수용과 이문화 적응에 대한 선행 연구[11]에서는 한국계/아시아계 미국인의 미국 문화 수용과 관련하여 4가지 정체성 적응(identity adjustment) 유형을 제시하였다.

위 표에서 제시된 것과 같이 각 유형은 다음과 같다. 동화(assimilation), 전통주의자(traditionalist), 주변화 (marginality), 두 문화 통합(bicultural integration)이다. [12] 이는 미국에 거주하고 있는 한국계 미국인 이민자들이 미국 문화에 사회 문화적 적응을 하는 모습과 경향을 설명하고 있다.

동양의 영향을 받은 한국 문화와 서양의 영향을 받은 미국 문화 사이에는 분명한 차이가 있고, 이러한 문화의 차이는 가족의 삶에 뚜렷한 영향을 미친다. 일부 연구[13]은 미국에 거주하고 있는 한국인 이민자 사회는 현재 한국의 전통적 사회 구조와 표준(norms)이 붕괴되고 아직 명확하게 구별된 서양의 표준으로 대체되지 않은 전이(transition)의 단계를 경험하고 있다고 주장한다. 해당 연구가 미국에 있는 모든 한국계 미국인 이민자들의 경험을 대변하지는 못하겠지만, 유교의 영향을 받은 한국계 미국인 이민자들이 미국 주류 사회 적응 시 어려움을 겪는 것을 보여준다.

재외한인의 이주가 1910년을 전후하여 본격적으로 시작된 이래로 100여 년이 지난 현 시점에서 미국에는 약 200만 명의 한국계 미국인이 거주하고 있다. 재미한인들은 미국 사회에서 양적으로 빠른 성장세를 보이고 있는 소수민족이다. 이러한 성과는 이민 1세대들의 헌신적인 노력에 힘입어 1.5세대와 2세대들이 미국사회에서 두각을 나타내고 있기 때문이다. 그러나 이러한 성장 속에서 이민세대들의 정체성 혼란은 재미한인 사회가 해결해야 할 숙원사업이다. [14]

2007년 조승희 총격 사건, 버지니아 공대 총기 난사 사건은 재외 한인 사회에 큰 충격을 주었다. 당시 여러 언론의 자문위원으로 활동했던 김명화 하버드대 교수는 2013년 보스턴코리아와의 인터뷰에서 "상담을 17여 년간 해오고 있지만, 조승희(범죄자)보다 더 심각한 학생을 대하고 있는 것이 현실"이라고 말했다.

그는 이민 사회의 가장 심각한 문제로 정체성(Identity) 혼란과 이민 자녀들의 낮은 자존감(Self-esteem)을 들었다. 그에 의하면 한국 남성이 타 아시아계 남성에 비해 우울장애 수치가 크게 높았고, 한인 여자 아이들은 타 아시아계에 비해 가장 낮은 자존감 수치를 기록했다. 이처럼 재외한인사회에서는 개인의 정체성과 자존감뿐만 아니라 민족정체성(Ethnic identity)과 집단자존감(Collective self-esteem)에 대한 문제가 끊임없이 제기되고 있다. [15]

일부 연구에 따르면, 재미한인 중 영주권자는 시민권자에 비해 민족정체성이 더 높음을 확인하였다. 일반적으로 국적이 한국인 영주권자들은 시민권자들보다 자기가 속한 집단과 동일시하고 있음을 이해할 수 있고, 시민권자일수록 자녀의 족외혼(미국인과의 결혼)을 찬성하는 것으로 나타나 신분상태에 따라 민족정체성에 차이가 있음을 주장하는 연구[16]도 존재했다. 또한, 일반적으로 이중적 귀속감을 갖고 있는 재외 한인들은 정체성의 혼란을 극복하기 위해 모국에 대해 아예 무관심하거나, 반대로 모국의 전통을 적극적으로 수용하고 재해석하여 자신의 정체성을 확림하려는 상반된 태도를 취하기도 한다고 한다. [17] 집단 자존감의 향상은 재미한인들의 모국과의 교류와 협력을 촉진시킬 것으로 기대할 수 있는 부분이기도 하다.

한국계 미국인들이 대한민국에 다방면 기여한 사례들이 존재한다.

주 대표는 혼자만 승승장구하지 않았다. 월스트리트에서 한국 출신 금융인들의 영원한 멘토로 활약하고 있다. 그는 월가 한국계 네트워크의 대부 같은 역할을 하고 있다. 주 대표는 샌더 허(허민영) 찰스뱅크캐피털파트너스 크레디트 대표와 함께 2009년 뉴욕에서 한인금융인협회(Korea Finance Society·KFS)를 만들었다. 200여 명으로 시작한 KFS는 현재 회원 수가 5000명으로 늘어났으며, 미국 주류 사회에서 한국 금융의 영토를 넓히고 있다. 또 KFS는 샌더 허 대표, 영 리 AUDAX 대표, 토니 리 원록(One Rock)캐피털파트너스 대표 등이 끈끈하게 서로 밀어주고 당겨준 하버드대 출신 친구들을 비롯해 수많은 한국계 미국인 금융인들의 결속 덕분에 지금도 성장을 계속하고 있다. 5.3. 미국 내 정치 성향

재미동포 중 미국 시민권자로서 투표권을 보유한 인구는 약 250만 명으로, 이는 미국 전체 인구의 약 1% 수준이다. 이들은 주로 캘리포니아주, 뉴욕주, 텍사스주, 뉴저지주, 버지니아주, 워싱턴주, 일리노이주, 조지아주, 메릴랜드주 등지에 집중되어 있으며, 전체의 약 66%(132만 명)가 이 지역에 거주하고 있다. 이러한 주 가운데 공화당 우세 지역은 텍사스주와 조지아주, 버지니아주(민주당 우위 경합주) 정도이고, 나머지 지역은 대부분 민주당 강세 지역이다. 자세한 분류는 레드 스테이트와 블루 스테이트 문서를 참조할 수 있다.

5.4. 한국어 능력

평균적으로 2세대까지는 어느 정도 의사소통이 가능할 정도의 한국어 능력을 갖추고 있다. 다만 대부분 듣고 이해하고 간단한 표현을 하는 수준이고 3세대 이후로는 한국어 구사 능력 자체가 매우 드물어진다. 2세대 역시 한글 학교에서 한국어 수업을 듣거나 해야 가능한 얘기이다. 이들은 일상 대화나 인터뷰 정도는 가능하지만, 한자어가 많이 들어간 공문서는 이해하지 못하는 사람들이 많다. 그래서 이들이 전문 용어는 영어, 프랑스어로 바꿔서 읽는다. 그렇기 때문에 의외로 미국 이민자들의 2세대 같은 경우 한국어가 익숙지 못한 경우가 꽤 있다. 이는 당시 가난한 국가이던 한국에서 이민온 초창기 미국 이민자들의 특성상 생계 유지에 바빠 자녀들에게 한국어 교육을 시킬 시간이 없었기도 하고, 바쁜 부모와 소통도 잘 못하니 자연스럽게 한국어는 잘 모르게 되는 경우가 많았기 때문이다. 일례로 박정현의 경우 한국어는 인삿말만 아는 수준이었기에 처음 한국에 온 목적도 진지하게 가수로 성공하겠다는 목적보다는 한국어를 배우고 가겠다라는 목적이 더 강했었다고 한다. #

5.5. 소득

한국계 미국인은 소득 수준이 매우 빠르게 성장하는 집단 중 하나다. 2019년 기준 한국계 미국인의 가계 소득은 72,000$로 미국 평균인 68,700$보다 높았고, 아시아계 미국인의 평균인 85,800$보다는 낮았다. 다만 한국계 미국인의 가계 소득이 아시아계 미국인 평균보다 낮은 이유는 인도계 미국인(약 12만$)과 대만계 미국인(약 10만$)의 매우 높은 가계 소득 때문이고, 아시아계 미국인에 속하는 집단간 순위로 보면 중위권은 된다. 물론 미국 전체로 범위를 넓히면 상위권에 속한다.[19] 하지만 간과해서는 안 되는 게, 세간의 이미지와는 달리 재미교포들이 전부 고학력에 중산층은 아니다. 어느 정도 재력이 있는 재미교포들이 한국에 오거나 언론에 노출되어 재미교포 = 중산층이나 부유층의 스테레오타입으로 보이는 것일 뿐, 일용직에 종사하거나 마트캐셔로 일하는 서민층도 적지 않으며, 고국의 친척을 보러 한국에 오는 것도 힘든 팍팍한 생활을 하는 사람도 있다. 특히 2023년 기준 가주(캘리포니아)의 한인 소득은 미국 평균보다 50% 많다.#

한국계 미국인의 가계 소득은 미국 평균보다 높지만, 아시아계 미국인 평균보다 낮은 것에 대해 잘못 오해하여 폄훼하는 경우도 있다. 하지만 한국인 이민자들은 1세대의 경우 언어문제로 주류사회 편입이 굉장히 힘들고, 역사가 짧아 언어 문제가 없는 2세, 3세의 비율이 적으며, 그렇다고 한인타운이 차이나타운처럼 독립적인 거대경제를 꾸릴정도로 완연하지도 않다. 즉, 한인사회의 이도저도 아닌 어중간한 처지가 낮은 소득으로 드러난 것일 수 있다는 관점이다. 한편, 한국계 미국인은 다른 집단보다 현금을 다루는 개인사업자(자영업)의 비중이 월등히 높기에 탈세가 원인이라는 이유도 있다. 전문직과 달리 개인 사업자는 본인이 직접 소득을 신고하게 되어있고 현금 수입은 100% 정확하게 보고되지 않는 경우가 많다고 한다. 또한 한국계 미국인은 개신교 신자가 많고, 대부분이 한인교회를 찾으며, 이들 한국계가 한인교회에 하는 각종 헌금, 특히 한인교회만의 특징인 십일조 헌금이 소득 통계의 허점을 유발할 수 있다고 한다.[20] [21]
