1. 개요

1974년 수도권 전철 개통과 함께 출발
구로역은 1974년 역사가 신축 준공되며 같은 해 8월 15일 수도권 전철 개통과 함께 보통역으로 영업을 개시하였다. 그보다 이전이었던 1969년과 1973년에 설치되었던 경부선 구로신호소와 구로남신호소가 구로역의 전신이라고 할 수 있다. 이후 도시와 함께 빠르게 성장하여, 1983년 사무관역 승격에 이어 1991년에는 신역사 B동이 준공되어 영업을 시작했다. 기존의 구로역이었던 A동이 당시 2,229.4㎡ 규모의 철근 콘크리트 슬라브 건물로 지상 3층, 지하 1층에 이르며, 새롭게 준공된 B동이 4,301.5㎡ 규모의 철근 콘크리트 슬라브 건물로 지상 5층, 지하 1층에 이른다. 경인선의 분기역으로 경부선, 경인선 방면으로 향하는 수도권 광역전철의 주요 환승역으로 많은 사람이 이용하며 구로 차량사업소가 위치하고 있을 만큼 교통의 중심지로 역할하였기 때문이다.

1995년 구일역 개통 전까지만 해도 인천 방향 다음 역이 개봉역이었고, 수원 방향 다음 역이 가산디지털단지역의 옛 이름인 가리봉역이었기에 헷갈려서 열차를 잘못 타는 사람이 많았다. 물론 구일역이 개통하고 가리봉역의 이름도 바뀐 현재까지도 열차를 잘못 타는 사람이 종종 발생하는 편.
한국철도공사 구간의 역 근무자들이 코레일네트웍스 등으로 외주직원으로 대체되는 중에도, 구로역의 규모와 운전 취급의 중요성으로 인해 이 역은 꿋꿋이 직영을 유지하고 있다.
광운대역, 병점역과 같이 승무사업소(한국철도공사 수도권광역본부 구로승무사업소)가 있다.
한국철도공사 소속 열차는 이 역에서 승무교대를 하기 때문에 조금 길게 정차한다.
2.1. 역사(驛舍)
1974년에 건축된 초대 역사는 지금에 비해 상당히 좁아서 이용에 난점이 있었고, 당시 역사 위치가 경부선 3복선화 부지에 포함되는 바람에 1991년 신역사를 건설하게 되었다. 완전히 철거하고 신축한 건 아니고, 5~9번 승강장에 있는 육교만 남겨두고 다른 부분을 신축한 것이다.개통 당시에는 5~9번의 5개 승강장밖에 없었으며, 5번에 경부선 상행, 6~7번에 경인선 내지 출고열차 상행, 8번에 경인선 하행, 9번에 경부선 하행 열차가 각각 정차하였다. 1~4번 승강장은 1991년 경부선 3복선화와 함께 신설되었다.
역 남쪽에 구로차량사업소가 있어 차량기지 입출고를 위한 당역 출발/종착 열차들이 존재한다. 그런데 보통 완행열차들이 이용하는 1~4번 승강장에는 기지와 이어지는 선로가 없기 때문에 구로행 완행열차들은 역에 진입하기 전에 미리 선로를 바꾸어 5~9번 승강장으로 들어와 줘야 한다. 그래서 인천역 방면에서 오는 경인선 구로행은 오류동역 출발 후 완행선(2선)에서 급행선(1선)으로 갈아타며, 서울역 방면에서 오는 구로행은 영등포역 진입 전 급행선으로 갈아탄다.[3]
반대로 구로기지에서 나와 이 역에서 출발하는 구로발 인천행 열차는 개봉역까지 급행선으로 가다가 오류동역 진입 전 완행선으로 갈아타고, 구로발 신도림 방면 완행열차는 역을 빠져나가자마자 평면교차해 신도림역 완행선으로 들어간다.
한편 구로기지 입출고하는 (경인선) 급행열차들도 있는데, 용산발 구로행의 경우 일반적인 동인천 급행과 같이 구로역까지 각역정차함에도 급행선으로 달린다는 이유로 한때 구로급행으로 표기하고 다녔으며, 철도 동호인들은 이를 구라급행(...)이라고 불렀다. 현재는 그냥 구로행으로 표기하고 다닌다. 반면 동인천발 구로행은 진짜로 구로역까지 급행 운행을 하기에 구로급행이라고 표기한다.
5번과 6번 승강장 사이에 건넘선이 하나 있는데, 과거 승강장이 6량 대응이던 시절에는 건넘선이 승강장 밖에 있었지만 10량 확장으로 인해 건넘선이 플랫폼 중간에 있게 된 것이다. 그래서 가산디지털단지역 방면에서 5번 승강장으로 들어온 경부선 구로행 열차들은 신도림역 방면으로 80m 정도 이동한 후 건넘선을 통해 6번 승강장으로 넘어가 차량기지로 입고한다.
철도공사 내부적으로는 2~3번 출구와 연결된 서쪽 건물을 A동, 1번 출구와 연결된 동쪽 건물을 B동이라 부른다. B동에는 승무원들이 휴식을 취하거나 숙식하는 구로승무사업소가 위치해 있다.
1,2번 출입구는 개통 당시부터 있었으며, 3번은 2번에 에스컬레이터 설치가 불가능해 2014년에 추가로 설치한 것이다. 그러나 세 출입구 모두 역 맨 남쪽에 있기 때문에 지역사회에서는 북쪽 출입구 신설을 요구하고 있다. 그도 그럴것이 역 이용률이 높은 아파트 단지들은 전부 역 북쪽에 있는데도 출입구는 세 개 다 남쪽에 있기 때문. 하지만 기술적 어려움과 토지 보상 문제로 인해 수십 년째 논의 단계에서 표류하고 있으며, 현재는 선거철에나 가끔 언급되다 마는 화제로 전락했다.
1991년에 건립된 현재 역사도 비좁고 낡은 탓에 현재 역사 신축 공사가 진행되고 있다. 현재 시점에는 2026년 준공 예정. 더불어 기존 구로역광장(2·3번 출구) 방향으로 작은 출구를 하나 더 내는 계획이 조감도상에 반영되어 있다. 여기서도 북동쪽 출입구 신설은 포함되지 않았다. 기사 공사는 2027년 7월에 완공 예정이다.
2.2. 승강장별 간단한 팁
목적지에 따른 승강장은 다음과 같다.- 신도림역~영등포역: 1번, 2번, 5번, 6번 승강장 중에서 가장 먼저 오는 열차 이용.
- 신길역~용산역: 1번, 2번, 6번 승강장 중에서 가장 먼저 오는 열차 이용. 단, 6번으로 들어오는 경인선 특급은 신길역과 대방역을 무정차 통과하기 때문에 주의.
- 남영역~광운대역: 1번, 2번 승강장 중에서 가장 먼저 오는 열차 이용.
- 월계역~연천역: 2번 승강장 이용. 단, 2번으로 들어오는 경원선 급행은 광운대역부터 일부 역을 무정차 통과하기 때문에 주의.
- 구일역~동인천역: 완행은 4번, 급행은 8번 승강장 이용. 단, 8번으로 들어오는 경인선 특급은 개봉역, 동암역, 제물포역을 무정차 통과하기 때문에 주의.
- 인천역: 4번 승강장 이용.
- 가산디지털단지역~금천구청역: 3번, 9번 승강장 중에서 가장 먼저 오는 열차 이용. 단, 3번으로 들어오는 경부선 급행은 독산역과 금천구청역[4]을 무정차 통과하기 때문에 주의.
- 석수역~서동탄역/신창역: 완,급행 모두 3번 승강장 이용. 단, 3번으로 들어오는 경부선 급행은 가산디지털단지역부터 일부 역을 무정차 통과하기 때문에 주의.
- 광명역: 9번 승강장 이용.
5번, 7번, 9번 승강은 열차가 매우 드물게 오기 때문에 시간표를 잘 보고 타야 한다. 5번과 9번은 광명셔틀 4량열차가 1시간에 1대 꼴로 운행하고, 7번은 구로기지 출고차량 전용 플랫폼이다.

7번 홈 안내판에는 구로역 시발(始發)이라 쓰여져 있었다. 물론 '출발점'이라는 뜻이고 저 안내판은 구로역에서 출발하는 열차가 정차하는 승강장이라는 뜻이며 스크린도어에도 양 방향을 모두 표기해 놨지만, '씨발'이라는 욕설이 먼저 떠오를 수 있어 이와 관련한 짤이 돌아다닌다. 이후 2025년 2월경 조금 더 보편적인 어감을 가진 출발로 수정되었다.
승강장 간 환승은 승강장 맨 남쪽과 가운데 두 곳에서 할 수 있는데 후자는 환승통로 역할만 하고 출구와는 연결되어 있지 않으니 구로역에서 하차하려면 무조건 남쪽 통로를 이용해야 한다. 이를 헷갈려 중앙 환승통로로 올라갔다가 출구를 찾지 못해 헤매는 경우가 많다. 나가는 곳, 갈아타는 곳 표지판을 잘 보고 따라가야 한다.
2.3. 일부 행선지의 개념환승
우선 2,3번 승강장이 붙어 있어 인천 방면에서 경인선 완행을 타고 온 승객(2번 하차)이 맞은편 3번에 정차하는 경부선 천안 방면 열차(완행, A급행 모두)로 3초 환승을 할 수 있다.또한 4,5번 승강장이 붙어 있어 광명셔틀이나 천안 방면에서 당역종착 열차를 타고 온 승객(5번 하차)이 맞은편 4번에 정차하는 경인선 인천 방면 완행열차로 3초 환승을 할 수 있다.
8,9번 승강장도 붙어 있는데 용산 방면에서 경인선 급행을 타고 온 승객(8번 하차)이 맞은편 9번에 대기하고 있는 구로발 경부선 천안 방면 열차로 3초 환승을 할 수 있다. 구로발 열차는 착석이 보장된다는 이점이 있으므로 출발지가 용산 이남이며 당역 출발 시간표만 숙지하고 있다면[5] 활용해 볼만한 루트이다.
6,7번 승강장도 붙어 있지만 양쪽 다 경인선이기 때문에 여기서 환승할 이유가 없다. 그나마 구일역까지 가야 하는데 실수로 급행을 타 구로역까지 와 버린 경우, 그런데 우연히 맞은편 7번홈에 구로발 인천행 열차가 대기하고 있는 경우 정도를 생각해 볼 수 있다.

1번 출구는 NC백화점 신구로점(구 AK플라자) 2층과 구름다리로 연결되어 있다. 백화점 내에 CGV 구로점이 있다. 주변으로 나오면 푸드 트럭들이 늘어서 있다.나란히 붙어있는 2·3번 출구는 공구상가로 출퇴근하는 사람들과 인근의 신도림동 거주자, 버스로 목동 방면으로 환승하려는 사람들이 이용한다. 2번 출구는 계단만 있는데, 에스컬레이터로 된 3번 출구가 2014년 신설된 후로는 사람이 거의 다니지 않는다. 출구로 나오면 눈앞에 구로기계공구상가단지가 펼쳐져 있다.

- 경부선과 경인선이 갈라지는 철도 교통 요충지로서 일평균 5만 명 가량이 꾸준히 이용하던 역이었다. 그러나 남서-북동 방향의 경인로와 북서-남동 방향의 구로중앙로를 불문하고 버스정류장들이 애매하게 위치해 있는 관계로, 버스노선과의 환승이 불편하다는 단점과 더불어 2호선과 직접 연결되는 신도림역으로 수요가 쏠리면서 평일 이용객이 점점 감소하는 추세에 있다.
- 경인로는 특히 심한데, 이유는 구로역의 출입구가 3개(사실상 2개)뿐이고, 그마저도 남서쪽 끝에 쏠려 있기 때문이다. 코리아빌딩 삼거리에 '신도림동·구로역' 버스중앙차로 정류장이 있지만 구로역과의 거리가 상당하다.
- 1번 출입구와 붙어 있는 버스정류장이 있는데 5611번만 정차하고, 배차 간격이 카카오맵 기준 평일 17분, 주말 21분으로 서울이라는 점을 생각할 때 농어촌버스에 준하는 수준이라서 큰 의미가 없다.
- 2012년에 5만 명대가 붕괴한데 이어 2016년에는 4만 5천 명 선마저 무너졌다. 이런 추세로 구로역을 이용하는 평일 승객 수는 점점 더 감소하고 경인로 연선에서 신도림역을 잇는 버스들의 이용률이 점점 늘어날 것으로 보이지만, 주말 수요는 반대로 NC백화점 신구로점(구 AK플라자) 덕분으로 매번 혼잡하다. 2019년에는 백화점 폐점으로 인해 대폭 감소할 것으로 보였으나, 1000명 정도밖에 줄지 않았으며 오히려 2020년에 코로나19 사태로 인해 대폭 감소했다.

5면 11선의 4상대+섬식 승강장이며 전철을 탈 수 있는 승강장이 9개로 대한민국 전철역 중 가장 많다.[7] 이 역은 경인선과 경부선의 분기역으로 두 노선의 승강장이 나뉘어 있고, 인근 구로차량사업소로 입·출고하는 열차들을 위한 승강장도 따로 있으며, 급행 승강장도 따로 있기 때문이다. 9개 승강장 중 7번 승강장을 제외한 나머지 승강장에는 최소 1시간에 1대씩 열차가 운행한다. 모든 승강장에 스크린도어가 설치되어 운용 중에 있다.
이 역의 4번·5번 승강장은 각각 인천역·영등포역 방면으로, 가면 갈수록 두 승강장의 높이 차이가 나고 단차가 생겨서 두 승강장 사이에는 계단이 있다. 높이는 4번 승강장이 더 높다.
7번을 제외한 홀수 번대 승강장은 경부선과 이어져 있고 짝수 번대는 경인선과 이어져 있다. 경부선 타는 곳들은 가산디지털단지역 방면으로 가는 방면은 모두 오른쪽 문이 열리고 반대로 구로역으로 들어오는 열차는 모두 왼쪽 문이 열린다. 반면에 경인선은 구일역 방면으로 가는 열차는 모두 왼쪽 문이 열리고 반대로 구로역으로 들어오는 열차는 모두 오른쪽 문이 열린다.
3번 승강장 1-4번 플랫폼 기둥에 영문 표기가 매큔-라이샤워 표기법으로 된 철도청 시절의 구형 역명판이 마지막까지 남아있다가 교체되었다. 1990년대 중후반에 설치된 것으로 추정된다.[8]
2025년 2월부터 리모델링 기간동안 역사에서 6~7번, 7월 15일부터 4~5번 승강장으로 내려가는 계단이 공사로 폐쇄된다.

6. 사건 사고
2006년 1월 19일, 구로역~안양역 전력공급 중단으로 모든 전철과 KTX가 운행 중단되었다.[9]
2014년 7월 30일 오전 10시쯤 화재가 일어났다. 화장실에서 시작된 화재로 밝혀졌으며 진압에는 20분이 채 소요되지 않았고 인명피해 또한 없었으나 신호에 문제가 생겨 2시간 정도 열차 운행이 불가하였고, 그 후 정상 복구되었다.
2016년 1월 25일 오전 6시 8분쯤 신원이 확인되지 않은 한 시민이 선로로 투신해 사망하는 사고가 일어났다. 최초 신고자인 기관사는 처음에 사람을 친 것을 인지하지 못했다고 한다. 코레일 관계자는 “전동차가 승강장에서 출발 직후 선로에 누워있던 시민을 발견하지 못하고 치었다. 자살로 추정된다.”고 밝혔다.
사고 수습 과정에서 전체 4개 선로 중 인천 방향 급행 선로 1개를 통제하면서 10개 열차가 5분~20분 가량 지연됐다.
2020년 6월 23일, 코로나바이러스감염증-19로 인해 대중교통 탑승 시 마스크 착용이 의무화된 상황에서 마스크를 하지 않은 40대 여성 때문에 소란이 일어나면서 운행이 약 7분간 지연되는 일이 있었다. 해당 여성은 업무방해 혐의로 체포되어 조사를 받았다.[10]
2024년 8월 9일 오전 2시 16분경 선로점검차량과 전철모터카가 충돌하여 2명이 숨지고 1명이 다치는 사고가 있었다. 자세한 사항은 경부선 구로역 철도장비차량 충돌사고 문서를 참조.
7. 여담
- KBS 2TV에서 방영하는 다큐멘터리 3일에서 이 역을 주제로 방영한 적이 있다. (59회, 2008년 7월 19일 '서민들의 인생 분기점, 구로역') 그리고 이곳에서 나온 일반인의 인생에 관한 명언이 짤방으로 퍼져 있다.[11]
- 가좌역, 회기역, 한강철교, 대전조차장과 함께 문제가 생기면 한국 철도에 큰 타격을 주는 시설이다. 1호선은 물론 서울역과 용산역에서 출도착하는 모든 열차의 운행에 차질이 생긴다.
- 승강장 곡선이 심하다. 그래서 2, 4번 승강장은 간격이 30cm에 달해 접이식 안전발판이 설치 되어있지만 1번 승강장 2, 3, 4, 5호차 일부와 3번 승강장 10-3은 열차사이 간격이 똑같이 거의 30cm에 달하지만 안전발판이 없으므로 승하차시 발빠짐에 주의 해야한다. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9번 승강장은 비교적 간격이 좁다.
