1. 개요

1899년 경인선 개통과 함께 축현역으로 영업개시
동인천역은 1899년 9월 18일 우리나라 철도 시작을 알렸던 경인선 개통과 함께 축현역으로 영업을 시작하였다. 오랜 세월 동안 역사 이전과 신, 개축을 거쳐 1955년 8월 7일 현재의 동인천역으로 역명을 변경, 1989년 민자역사가 설립되어 오늘에 이른다. 당시 역사는 ㈜동인천쇼핑센터가 주관, 1,304㎡ 규모에 98.7㎡ 부대건물을 갖춘 철근콘크리트 평지붕으로 지어졌다. 당시 인천 시내에서 가장 번화한 백화점이었지만 IMF 구제금융사건 시기에 부도를 맞아 문을 닫았다. 현재에는 복합쇼핑몰 개발이 진행 중이다. 중구와 동구의 경계선에 위치한 역으로 역사 광장과 출입구를 중심으로 지하상가 상권과 재래시장이 형성되어 있다.

경인선의 철도역으로, 경인선 첫 개통과 함께 영업을 개시했다. 즉 대한민국 철도 역사상 처음으로 개업한 8개 역중 하나이다. 각각 제물포역(현재의 인천역), 축현역(현재의 동인천역), 우각동역(없어진 역, 현재 도원역 인근에 위치), 부평역, 소사역(현재의 부천역), 오류동역, 영등포역, 노량진역이다.

경인선이 1899년에 최초로 개통되었을 당시 동인천역이 시종착 기능을 수행했다는 잘못된 정보가 인터넷 상에 넓게 퍼져 있다. 경인선은 제물포-노량진 구간이 처음으로 개통되었다. 인천항의 당시 이름이 제물포였던 관계로 일제 초기에는 인천역이 제물포역으로 불렸다.

용산역으로 가는 급행열차의 시발점이다. 역 주변의 이용 수요가 과거보다 많이 줄었기에 평시는 물론 출근 시간에도 착석이 보장된다.

2.1. 역명 변천

1899년 9월 18일 최초 개통 시의 역명의 한자 표기는 '杻峴驛'인데, 이 것은 '유현역'으로 보인다. 당시 '싸리재'(또는 '싸릿재' 또는 '싸리나무 고개', 또는 삼리재(3리재)) 라는 지역명칭을 한자로 표기하여 로마자 역명은 싸리재라는 표현을 그대로 썼다. '싸리 뉴(杻)'와 '고개 현(峴)' 즉 '뉴현'을 두음법칙에 따라 '유현'으로 표기한 것이며, 1899년 9월 16일자에 독립신문에 실린 "화륜거[4] 왕래시간"에는 '인쳔' '유현' '우각동' '부평' '오류동' '로량진'역의 열차 시각을 소개함으로써 최초 경인선의 운행 시각표와 소요시간 자료가 남아 있다.

1979년 9월 18일 철도청에서 발행한 '한국철도 80년 약사'에서 1926년 4월 25일 '유현역을 상인천역으로 바꿈'이라는 역사 기록이 있다. 그리고, 1993년 12월 31일 철도청에서 발행한 '한국철도요람집'의 '동인천역'의 연혁에

이라는 역사 기록은 현 동인천역의 전신이 유현역임을 명시하고 있다.

'옛 한자사전'을 찾아보면 '杻'는 '싸리 뉴'라 되어 있을 뿐이나 최근 발행된 한자사전에서는 '뉴자이나 싸리 축'으로도 볼 수 있음을 표기하고 있다.[5] 물론 일부 기록 예를 들면 인천항구도(仁川港口圖)에서는 '杻峴 停車場' 옆에 '츅현 뎡거장'이라는 한글 표기가 있는데 어디서 언제 어떻게 그려진 지도인지는 알 수 없으나 분명 경인철도 개통 후 그려진 것으로 추정된다.

한자로만 표기되던 '杻峴(유현/추현)'이 어느샌가 '축현'이라 읽히면서 역명과 지명이 바뀌었다고 보는 것이 타당하다. 인천과 축현이 합쳐서서 '인현'으로 바뀌었기에 축현이란 지명조차 과거의 이야기가 되었는데, 축현이란 이름은 '인천축현초등학교'등으로 그 흔적이 남아 있다.

이 축현초등학교는 2001년에 연수구 송도역 근처로 이사갔고, 학교 부지에는 인천광역시교육청학생교육문화회관이 들어서 있다.

하지만 일본에서 杻과 峴이라는 한자를 잘 쓰지 않아서 그런지, 역명이 어렵다고 역명 공모를 통해 1926년 4월 25일 '카미진센역(上仁川驛; 상인천역)'으로 바꾸었다. 이 영향으로 인천역은 한 번도 이름이 바뀐 적이 없는데도 인천에 오래 살았던 주민들은 인천역을 ‘하인천역(下仁川驛)’이라고도 부른다.

당시 여론을 다룬 매일신보 기사에서는 ‘상’을 붙이는 것이 내지인(일본 본토인)의 방언이라고 서술하며 조선인에게는 그런 표현이 익숙하지 않다며 동인천역으로 하는 것이 낫다는 주장을 담고 있다.

결국 역명이 ‘상인천역’이 된 일제강점기부터 광복 후에 이르기까지 이 역 일대(신포동, 현 동인천역 앞, 싸리재, 배다리)는 상인천이라고 불렸다. 이에 근처의 학교들이 '상인천' 명칭을 가지고 있는 경우가 있었다. 대표적인 것이 배다리에 있던 인천고등학교의 병설 상인천중학교이다.

광복 후 일제의 잔재를 없앤다며 잠시 '추현역'으로 바뀌었다가, 1955년 8월 7일부터 현재의 이름인 동인천역이 되었다. 과거 인천 도심이었던 인천역 일대보다 동쪽에 있으니 당시 기준으로는 타당한 이름이긴 한데, 인천의 범위가 아주 넓어진 현재 기준으로는 인천 서쪽 끝부분에 있는 동인천역(...)이 되어버렸다. 그리고 '동인천'이라는 지명은 이제 인천의 동부를 의미한다기보다는 이 일대를 지칭하는 대명사로 자리잡게 되었다.

개업 당시 축현역사는 현 동인천역에서 동남쪽으로 200m 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있었으나, 1908년 선로를 이설하면서 역사도 현재 위치로 이전하였다.

1977년 4월 1일 철도청 고시 제5호에 따라서 화물취급이 중지되었다.[6]

현재의 역사는 1989년 완공된 3대 역사이자 민자역사이며, 서울역에 이은 한국 2번째 민자역사이다. 원래 이 역사에는 인천을 대표하는 지역 백화점이었던 인천백화점이 들어서 있었는데 대기업 주도로 지어진 보통의 민자역사와 다르게 지역 상인들이 합해 만들었다는 특징이 있다. 인천백화점은 부평의 동아씨티백화점(현 모다백화점 부평점), 간석동 희망백화점(현 동보올리브백화점)과 함께 1990년대 초중반까지 인천의 3대 백화점 중 하나로 성업했다.

그러나 1985년 인천시청이 중구 송학동에서 남동구 구월동으로 이전된 것을 계기로 동인천의 도심 기능은 서서히 쇠퇴하고 있었으며 1997년 IMF 위기와 1999년 인현동 화재 사건이 결정타가 되어 심각한 위기를 맞았다. 또한 하이웨이백화점(現 뉴코아아울렛 인천점)과 신세계백화점 인천점(현 롯데백화점 인천점)의 개점은 인천백화점을 비롯한 동인천 상권의 몰락을 불러오게 된다.

이에 따라 2001년에 동대문 스타일의 패션 전문 쇼핑몰인 '엔조이쇼핑몰'로 이름 및 업종을 변경하여 재기를 시도했으나 역부족이었고, 결국 2009년에 폐업하였다.[7] 당초 패션 전문 쇼핑몰을 표방했지만 구성은 사실상 동인천역 지하상가의 연장선에 불과했다. 그렇게 엔조이쇼핑몰까지 문을 닫으면서 민자역사는 폐건물로 전락했고, 위 사진에 있는 시계탑과 전광판, 무대는 모두 철거되어 더 이상 존재하지 않는다.

한때 여기에 롯데마트와 프리머스시네마가 들어설 예정이라는 썰이 있었지만 무산되었고 다른 여러 업체들도 입점을 시도했으나 전부 무산되고 말았다. 민자역사가 새 주인을 찾는 사이 노후된 내부 통로는 노숙인들의 집합소가 되었다. 그리고 점용허가 기간 만료로 원상회복, 즉 철거 방침이 내려졌으나, 법적 분쟁이 발생했다.

2013년 6월 민자역사가 재난위험시설 D등급으로 지정되었고, 동인천 르네상스 플랜에 따라 민자역사 철거계획이 수립되었다.[8] 철거 후 역사를 백화점과 같은 상업성과 공공 업무까지 함께 담당할 복합건축물의 형태로 새로 짓는 방안이 유력하다.[9] 다용도 역사로 재건축할 경우 기존 인천백화점이 수행했던 상업시설로서의 용도 또한 부활할 가능성도 있고, 지역 상인들이 바라는 것 또한 과거 1980~90년대 동인천역사의 부활이기도 했었다.

2025년부터 민자역사 철거가 시작된다.[10] 철거 후 철도위원회가 복합건축물을 신축할 예정이라고 한다. 다만 2028년까지 철거가 지연될 수도 있다는 얘기가 나왔다. 지하도상가 약관 때문에 통개발이 불가능해진다는 게 이유이다. 그렇게 되면 약 40년 만에 철거되는 것이 된다. 다만 실제로 건물이 제 역할을 한 것은 40년 역사의 절반 정도에 불과하다.

2005년 주안역에서 이 역에 이르는 구간을 끝으로 경인선 2복선화 공사가 모두 완료되면서 기존 주안역까지만 운행하던 급행열차가 이 역으로 연장되었다. 현재 경인선 급행열차의 시종착역 역할을 하고 있다.[11] 종점인 인천역은 선로 용량 및 회차 능력문제로 급행열차가 들어가지 않는다.

한때 인천역 방면으로 급행 선로를 지하로 내려보내 수인선과 직결하여 인천역을 거쳐 송도역까지 급행을 연장할 계획이 있었으나 무산되었다.

역무동과 옛 민자역사의 역명판이 심각한 노후화로 인해 2023년 1월경 LED 역명판으로 교체되었다.[12]

3. 역 주변 정보

경인선 선로를 기준으로 역 북쪽은 송현동이고, 역 남쪽은 동인천동이다.

역 주변은 구한말부터 1990년대 중반까지 인천을 대표하는 도심지역이었다. 그래서 주변에서 적산가옥을 쉽게 찾을 수 있다.

역 남쪽에 인천광역시에서 가장 오래된 서점인 대한서림과 인천학생교육문화회관 앞에 위치한 동인서관이 있다. 두 서점은 제물포고등학교, 인성여자고등학교, 인일여자고등학교, 인성여자중학교, 화도진중학교 등 주변의 학교로 인해 참고서 수요가 많으며, 여전히 약속장소로 이용된다. 대한서림은 1953년부터 현재까지 같은 자리에서 영업을 이어가고 있다. 과거에는 1층부터 6층까지가 모두 서점이었지만 시대가 흐르고 도서 구입 인구가 줄어들면서 서점의 면적도 빌딩의 가운데인 2층과 3층으로 줄었다. 현재는 대한서림 빌딩의 1층에 KT대리점이 있고 4~6층에 치과가 임대로 입주해 있다. 동인서관은 원래 대한서림 바로 옆에 있었으나 2000년대 중반 이후 규모를 줄이면서 현재의 위치로 이사왔다.

대한서림 앞 외에도 인근에 있는 맥도날드 동인천점 앞도 약속장소로 이용되고 있다. 맥도날드 앞에서 만나면 십중팔구 바로 뒷편의 먹자골목으로 이동하는 경우가 많다.

개항기 이후 인천을 대표하던 원도심 중 가장 핵심 지역인 만큼 이 역에서 멀지 않은 거리에 근대 문화유산 내지는 문화유산급으로 꼽을 만한 명소들이 상당히 많다. 배다리 헌책방 골목, 애관극장, 미림극장, 천주교 인천교구 주교좌 답동 성 바오로 대성당, 기독교대한감리회 내리교회, 대한성공회 서울교구 내동 성 미카엘 성당 등이 있다. 한국에 전파된 기독교 3대 주류 종파(개신교, 천주교, 성공회)가 나란히 이 지역에 있는 것은 개항 이후 선교사들이 가장 먼저 정착한 지역이 동인천 일대이기 때문이다.
  • 배다리 헌책방 골목은 도원역과 동인천역 사이 한가운데에 있다. 동인천역 4번출구에서 나와서 한복상가 쪽으로 10분 정도 걸어오면 헌책방 거리를 만날 수 있다. tvN 드라마 도깨비의 일부 장면이 이곳에서 촬영됐고 영화 극한직업의 주무대 '수원왕갈비통닭'(아울렛팬시) 자리도 이 골목에 있다.[13] 무법변호사와 인랑 촬영지로도 쓰였다.
  • 애관극장은 구한말부터 같은 자리에서 운영되고 있는 유서 깊은 토종 극장으로, 인천에서 제일 오래 된 극장이다.
  • 미림극장은 인천 최후의 일반극장이다. 동인천 근처에 있던 오성극장, 인형극장, 동인천극장 등 다른 극장은 2000년대 들어서 죄다 문을 닫았으며 인천 전체를 통틀어 멀티플렉스 체인이 아닌 일반극장은 애관극장과 미림극장, 예술영화 상영관인 '영화공간 주안' 부평 대한극장뿐이다. 2012년부터는 인천시청과 동구청으로부터 예산 지원을 받아 어르신 관객들을 위한 고전 명작영화 상영 전용 극장으로 운영되고 있다.
  • 답동 성 바오로 대성당은 국가 사적으로도 지정된 인천 지역 천주교의 본산이자 1970~1980년대 인천지역 민주화 운동 역사의 사적이기도 하다. 인천교구청 청사가 이 성당 앞과 뒤에 있었으나 교구청은 송림동 옛 박문여중·고교 부지로 2017년 2월에 이전했다. 성당 앞편 인천 가톨릭회관은 철거됐고 성당 뒤편 교구청사(옛 인천박문초등학교 교사)는 사회사목센터로 운영 중이다.
  • 기독교대한감리회 내리교회는 아펜젤러 선교사가 세운 대한민국 최초의 감리회 교회이다. 이 때문에 '한국의 어머니 교회'라는 별칭도 있다.

인천역에서 가는 게 약간 더 빠르지만, 대한민국 최초의 서양식 공원인 자유공원도 근처에 있다. 자유공원으로 가기 위한 길이 오르막길이다. 대한서림 오른쪽 골목으로 올라가면 된다. 이 길을 올라가다 보면 나오는 홍예문 삼거리에 오래된 배팅장이 하나 있는데, 투구 자세로 타격을 하는 이상한 모습의 박찬호 그림이 야구팬들 사이에 명물로 알려져 있다. 토박이 사이에서 전해지는 이 그림의 탄생 비화는 다음과 같다. 당시 동인천 인근에는 애관극장, 미림극장 등 오래된 극장들이 있어 옛날식 영화 패널을 그리는 화백이 많았다. 그 중 한 화백이 배팅장 패널을 의뢰받았는데, 당시 인기 절정이던 박찬호의 하이 키킹에서 한 다리를 접은[14] 투구 자세를 그렸으나 배팅장 사장님은 타자 사진을 원했다고 한다. 다시 그리기 귀찮아진 노(老) 화백이 어깨 너머로 방망이만 대충 그려서 납품한 것이 저 그림의 기원이라는 설이다.[15] 이에 따라 발끝을 살짝 접은 하이 키킹 폼에 방망이를 휘두르는 듯한 자세가 마치 노모 히데오처럼 등을 돌리는 회오리 스타일로 왕정치나 이승엽의 외다리 타법을 구사하는 듯한 기묘한 폼의 타법의 그림이 완성되었다.

연안부두가 동인천역에서 버스로 20분 정도 소요되는 거리에 있어서 중국인이나 조선족, 필리핀 등 동남아시아 계열 외국인들이 많고 타지에서 온 여객선 이용객들도 이 역 주변을 많이 들르는 편이다. 연안부두로 가는 버스편이 많은 제물포역 역시 마찬가지이다. 2019년까지는 인천항 제2국제여객터미널이 근방 수도권 전철 수인·분당선 신포역 바로 앞에 있어서 이 곳을 이용하려는 사람도 많았지만 연안부두의 1터미널과 신포동의 2터미널을 하나로 합친 인천항국제여객터미널이 2020년 송도국제도시에 새로 생기면서 옛 이야기가 됐다. 다만 백령도, 대청도, 연평도, 덕적도, 자월도 등지로 가는 여객선은 계속 연안부두에서 출항하기에 아직 연안부두 이용 수요는 있는 편이다.

의료기관으로는 가천대학교 동인천길병원과 인천기독병원, 제물포구보건소가 있다. 아울러 체육시설로는 2014 인천 아시안 게임 당시 배구 경기장이자 서울 우리카드 위비가 연습체육관으로 쓰고 있는 송림체육관이 있다. 동인천역에서 버스로 15~20분 소요된다.

동인천역 상권은 1990년대 후반까지만 해도 주안역, 동암역, 부평역과 함께 인천의 중심지라 할 수 있을 정도의 번화한 곳이었으나 1999년 인천 인현동 호프집 화재 참사로 인한 마이너스 이미지와 인천백화점 터의 연이은 부도, 인천광역시의 구월동과 관교동 중시로 인해서, 지금은 동인천역 상권이 주안역, 동암역과 함께 완전히 몰락한 상태이다. 그에 따라 학군도, 송도국제도시, 연수지구, 영종국제도시, 청라국제도시, 논현지구등 신도시로 옮겨가고 있고 이제는 중앙시장 쪽이 우범지역이 될 위험성 때문에 전기 공급을 끊는다는 소문까지 나오고 있다. 그러나 주변의 맛집이나 골목길 등이 블로거 등을 통해 동인천 상권이 알려지면서 수요가 아주 줄지는 않았다.

인천에서 가장 구제옷이 스타일리쉬하고 구하기 쉽고, 어느 정도 자기만의 스타일을 맞출 수 있는 곳이 동인천역 주변 거리의 특징이다. 로데오 거리는 신포시장 뒤 쪽에 위치해 있으며, 가게 점포 수는 부평 로데오나 구월동 로데오보다 많지만 이용객 수는 10분의 1 정도이다.

주변 명물은 동인천역 뒷거리의 화평동 세숫대야 냉면과 동인천 앞 신포국제시장 닭강정이다. 화평동 냉면은 유일한 북쪽 출구인 4번 출구에 있다. 정확히는 북동쪽으로 나 있으나, 경인선의 역들을 방향으로 구별할 때는 북쪽과 남쪽으로만 구분하는 관습이 있다. 유일하게 남북으로 뻗어있는 동암역도 서쪽을 북부역, 동쪽을 남부역이라고 부르기도 한다. 전철에서 내려서 승강장 서쪽 끝 부분(인천행 기준 1-1)으로 가서 카드를 찍고 오른편의 4번 출구로 나오면 2012년에 공사를 끝낸 북광장이 나오는데 여기서 왼쪽으로 돌아서 직진하다가 길 하나를 건너면 그곳이 냉면 골목이다.

반대로 4번 출구에서 오른쪽으로 가면 양키시장(중앙시장 or 송현자유시장)과 송현동 순대거리가 있는데 음식들은 평범한 수준이지만 가격은 저렴하다. 북광장 옆 중앙시장은 예전에 비해 상당히 많이 쇠락했다. 북광장 오른쪽 편에 민트색으로 건물 전체가 도색된 큰 건물이 있는데 이 건물이 이 시장의 핵심 건물이었다. 건물 내부에는 인근 미림극장과 함께 한국영화 개봉관으로 명성을 떨친 오성극장이 있었으나 동인천 상권의 쇠락에 밀려 2003년 폐관했다. 그래서 유동인구가 줄어든 데다 상점들도 운영하는 곳보다 운영하지 않는 곳이 더 많다. 특히 해가 중천에 뜬 대낮에도 햇볕조차 들어지 않는 어두운 곳이기 때문에 더욱 음산한 분위기를 연출하고 있다. 그래도 양키시장이라는 별명에 걸맞게 꽤 희귀한 외국 물건 등을 쉽게 구할 수 있다는 것이 유일한 장점이다. 2000년대 초까지는 유명 의류 브랜드의 짝퉁 상품이나 구제, 보세 의류를 저렴한 가격에 구입할 수 있는 곳이었으나 시대의 흐름에 따라 이 모습도 사라졌다. 지금은 한복, 이불 등을 파는 혼수거리로 바뀌었다. 본래 배다리 쪽 입구에 모여 있던 한복거리가 확장한 셈이다. 그리고 동인천역 앞에 거리가 순대국밥 거리인데 순대국밥 집이 상당히 많다.

덕질에 관해서도 국내에서 오랜 역사를 가진 게임과 프라모델 매장 두 군데가 있는데, 하나는 동인천역 지하상가에 있는 쎄리게임전문점이라는 게임매장과 과거 아이큐하우스라는 상호로도 유명했던 프라모델 매장, 모델러가 있다. 둘 다 1980년대부터 시작해 현재까지 계속 한자리에서 이어져오고 있다.

신포 닭강정은 신포국제시장에서 팔고 있는데 조금 걸어야 한다. 신포 닭강정의 가격은 2023년 기준으로 중짜리가 17000원, 대짜리가 22000원이다.

인천에서 술값이 가장 싸다고 할 수 있는 동인천 삼치거리도 있다. 앞서 설명한 대한서림 오른쪽 길로 올라가다 보면 청소년 문화회관을 지나서 오른쪽 골목이 삼치골목이다.(대한서림에서 약 500m 정도 거리) 몇 년 전까지만 해도 삼치구이의 가격은 3000원이었고, 4-5cm 두께의 삼치를 4-5덩이를 주는 등 인천뿐 아니라 수도권에서 술값이 제일 싼 편에 속하는 지역이었다. 지금도 오르긴 했지만 저렴한 건 마찬가지이다. 일 년에 두어 번 정도 막걸리 1천 원에 파는 행사를 한다.

인현동에는 '전기구이 통닭'과 '삼계탕'이 매우 유명하다. 삼계탕을 시키면 나오는 인삼주가 별미이다.

동인천역 남쪽 앞 광장은 오래 전부터 인천시민들이 모이는 장소로 자주 활용돼왔다. 그래서 대통령선거 등과 같은 전국 단위 대형 선거에서는 대중 유세 장소로 활용된 적이 많다. 유동인구의 수로만 보면 북광장보다 남광장 쪽 유동인구가 훨씬 많다. 왜냐하면 남광장 앞은 상업지역이고 북광장 앞쪽은 주거지역이기 때문이다.

4번 출구 쪽은 예전엔 시장 골목 안이라서 다소 음침한 분위기였는데, 2012년 가을 시장을 한 블록을 통째로 날리고 새로 광장을 만들었다. 2겹의 로터리처럼 만들어서 바깥쪽(역 출구에서 가까운 쪽)에는 버스 정류장, 안쪽(역 출구에서 먼 쪽)에는 택시 정류장을 만들어 놓았다. 이곳에서 306번 버스를 타고 인천국제공항 및 을왕리해수욕장 방면으로 갈 수도 있고, 그 외 가좌동 방면으로 가는 버스가 들어오고 있다. 십정동 방면의 306번 버스나 가좌동 쪽에서 오는 버스는 이 북광장에 들어오지 않고, 남부역의 동인천역사거리 쪽으로 간다.

북광장이 생긴 후 이 광장에서는 여러 가지 행사가 열린다. 동구청에서 주최하는 지역 축제인 '화도진 축제'의 무대공연이 이곳에서 열리며 매달 토요일 하루를 골라서 진행하는 나눔장터도 이곳에서 열린다. 특히 북광장에 설치된 초대형 LED 스크린을 활용하기도 하는데 올림픽이나 월드컵 축구 경기 단체 응원을 진행하는가 하면 인천 유나이티드의 경기를 가끔 생중계하기도 한다. 다만 이 북광장의 가장 큰 문제는 노숙자들이다.

2015년 겨울부터는 북광장에 스케이트장을 만들었는데 구경하는 사람도 많고 동인천역에 새로운 랜드마크가 생겼다는 점에서, 그리고 무엇보다 그 자리에 있던 노숙자들이 사라져서 현지 주민들의 반응은 괜찮은 편이었다. 2016년 2월 말에 철거하고 다시 광장으로 복구했다. 그리고 2016년 11월에는 '화도진 스케이트장'이라는 이름으로 12월 9일 개장하기로 했으며, 관리 담당업체는 ㈜메이저스포츠산업이다. 스케이트장 뿐만 아니라 썰매장도 같이 운영한다. 광장 한쪽에는 대형 크리스마스트리도 설치한다.

그러나 2017년 말 동구 의회가 구도심 공동화가 빨라지는 상황에서 일회성 이벤트에 예산을 쏟아붓는 것은 적절치 않다고 비판했고 결국 2018년 동구 예산안에서 스케이트장 설치·운영비가 전액 삭감돼 2018년 겨울부터는 스케이트장이 운영되지 않고 있다가 2023년 12월 20일부터 2024년 2월 15일까지 다시 운영되었다. 다만 광장 한가운데에 크리스마스트리는 설치되고 있다.

2018년 9월, 북광장에서 인천퀴어문화축제가 열렸지만, 기독교 우파를 중심으로 한 혐오세력이 사전에 장소를 점거해 참가자들에게 폭력을 행사하는 사태가 벌어져 제대로 열리지 못하기도 했다.

신포역에서 동인천역으로 이어지는 신포공공지하보도 사업은 2020년 정부의 국비와 인천광역시청의 시비를 예산으로 받아놓고도 단 1원도 집행하지 않았다.[16]

이 역은 주변 중구 주민들뿐 아니라 미추홀구, 특히 용현동 주민들의 철도 교통 요지였다. 미추홀구 용현동에는 2016년 수도권 전철 수인선 2단계 개통 전까지 지하철역이 없었고 어떤 역이든 버스로 20-30분 정도 소요됐는데, 동인천역이 급행 정차역이므로 주로 이용되었다. 다만 수인선 개통 후에도 동인천역의 수요는 크게 변화하지 않고 있는데 이는 수인선의 배차 간격이 매우 긴 데다가 수인선이 서울특별시로 직결되는 노선이 아니라는 단점도 있고 인천역에서 바로 급행 열차를 이용할 수 없는 불편함도 있기 때문이다.

  • 1990년대까지 인천의 중심지 역할을 했던 덕분에 유동 인구와 이용객이 제법 많은 역에 속했다. 개통한 지 5년 정도 지난 1979년에 65,905명이라는 최고 일평균 이용객을 기록했고, 1980년, 1981년, 1984년, 1990년부터 1993년까지 6만 명선을 기록하였으나 1994년부터 이용객이 격감, 1999년에 이르러서는 35,874명을 기록하였다. 인천의 중심지 이동과 상권의 노후화와 쇠락으로 인해 이용객이 감소했으며, 특히 인천광역시가 1호선이 지나는 지역보다 관교동ㆍ구월동과 송도국제도시에 관심을 많이 보이기 때문에 다른 광역시급 도시들에 비해 상권 붕괴에 대한 타격을 제일 심하게 당했으며, 도심 공동화의 전형적인 사례로서 과거에 비해 입지가 좁아진 대표적인 역이다. 2020년 이용객은 하루 평균 23,189명으로 전성기였던 1990년대 초반의 1/3밖에 되지 않는다.
  • 하지만 수십 년간 꾸준히 이용객이 줄어들기만 한 것은 아니다. 특이하게도 경인선의 다른 역들이 2000년대 내내 꾸준한 이용객 감소로 골치를 앓았던 것과는 달리, 동인천역은 2000년대 중반부터 꾸준히 이용객이 증가하는 패턴을 보였다. 동인천역 상권이 침체일로를 겪은 것과는 매우 대비되는 결과이다. 기존에는 전통적인 상업 중심지로서 지역 주민들이 주로 이용했었으나, 신포국제시장의 닭강정, 화평동의 세숫대야 냉면 등 맛집으로 이름을 날리면서 관광객이 큰 폭으로 증가했다. 또한, 슬럼화 문제로 골칫거리였던 북부역 역세권에 광장을 조성하면서 접근성을 높인 것도 하나의 원인일 수 있다.
  • 2000년대 중반부터 동인천역 이용객 수가 반등하면서 2010년에 와서는 하루 4만 명을 회복했다. 그러나 2011년을 기점으로 다시 성장세가 꺾여 감소세로 전환되었는데, 2014년에 잠깐 소폭 반등한 것을 제외하면 이용객이 꾸준히 줄고 있다. 2015년에는 6년 만에 4만 명대가 붕괴한 데 이어 2016년에는 수인선이 인천역까지 연장 개통함에 따라 한꺼번에 2천 명이 줄었고, 그다음 해에도 1,500여 명이 더 줄어들어 적지 않은 타격을 받았다. 그리고 인천 도시철도 2호선 개통과 동시에 버스 개편으로 미추홀구의 버스들은 대부분이 주안역으로 가서 동인천역의 승하차인원이 조금씩 감소했고, 제물포역이 급행 정차역이 되면서 승객이 일부 빠져나갔다.
  • 결국, 2024년에도 수요 회복은커녕 한번 더 수요가 꺾이면서 경인선 개통 이후 절대 놓치지 않았던 인천 중구 최대역 자리도 인천공항1터미널역에 빼앗겼다. 그래도 제물포구 설치 이후에는 도원역 하나만이 추가되고 영종도가 떨어져 나가기 때문에 제물포구 최대역 자리는 따 놓은 당상이다.

다른 쪽의 급행 열차 시·종착역인 용산역과 비슷하게 가끔씩 동인천 급행으로 들어오는 열차가 용산 방면 승강장으로 진입하는 경우도 있다. 사고가 터진 게 아니라 열차 출발이 지연됐거나 인상선에 차량이 한 대도 없는 경우가 매우 잦으므로 본 승강장에 도착할 경우 심각한 지연이 발생할 수 있어 이렇게 운행한다. 이런 경우를 "상선 착발"이라고 하는 데 시간표가 따로 정해진 것이 아니고 로컬 관제에서 융통성 있게 상선 착발을 지시하는 것이다. 보통 종착역에서 인상선으로 들어가 회차해야 하는데 이미 많이 지연되어 온 경우, 또는 인상선에 차량이 단 한 대도 없어 회차에 시간이 많이 걸릴 것 같을 때 이런 상선 착발을 시키는 편이며 종착역에 도착하기 훨씬 전에 관제에서 이 지시를 내린다.

상선 착발을 할 경우 인천행 열차를 타려면 하행 승강장으로 넘어가야 하는 번거로움이 있기 때문에, 승무원들도 이런 경우에는 종점 직전 역인 제물포역이나 주안역에서 완행으로 옮겨탈 것을 권장하는 방송을 한다. 반대편의 용산역도 이런 식으로 착발을 자주 하는데, 동인천역보다 더 잦은 편이다. 인천역까지 갈 승객이라면 인천 방면 승강장으로 건너와야 한다. 이렇게 들어온 열차는 그대로 방향만 돌려서 용산 방면으로 간다. 따라서 최종 목적지가 인천역이라면 제물포역에서 급행열차를 하차한 뒤 미리 완행으로 갈아타는 것이 좋다.

급행 당역 종착 승강장에도 스크린도어에 다음역이 인천역이라 표시되어 있다. 용산역 경인선 급행 당역 종착 승강장 스크린도어에는 용산역이 마지막이라 표시되어 있는 것과 대비된다.
