사무라이라면 지켜야 할 행동 규범 관념. 전근대 일본의 무사들의 덕목으로 여겨지던 관념이다.무사도라는 관념 자체는 무사 계급이 태동한 뒤부터 존재하던 것으로 추정하지만, 근본적으로 부시도(武士道, ぶしどう)란 단어 자체는, 사무라이들이 헤게모니를 쥐고 있던 13 ~ 16세기 문헌에서는 쓰인 적이 없다. 무사로서의 이상적인 자세나 사상에 대해 쓰여진 것은 적지 않게 있으나, 무사도라는 단어 자체는 후대에 만들어진 단어이다.
2. 헤이안 ~ 가마쿠라 막부 시기의 무사도
가마쿠라 막부 시대는 황실의 방계 혈족과 대귀족 출신으로서 조정의 명을 받아 지방의 무사들을 위무하고 통제해 무사단을 세운 이들이 일본의 율령체제를 허수아비로 만들고 실권을 잡은 시대였다. 당시에는 값비싼 활과 화살, 갑주와 군마를 소유하고 전투를 지원할 사병과 시종들을 거느릴 수 있는 황족, 귀족 출신의 무사들이 무사단의 핵심을 이루고, 일본의 군사 제도가 붕괴한 뒤부터 자기 방어를 위해 칼을 들었던 호족과 부농, 평민 출신 무사들은 주로 무사단의 하부에 속했다. 당장 가마쿠라 막부를 세운 가문인 미나모토 가문과 그 경쟁 가문이던 다이라 가문부터가 일본 황실의 먼 방계 후손들이다. 이런 상황에서 무사들은 그들만의 독특한 관념과 행동 양태를 보였다.당시의 대표적인 무사도적 관념에는 이런 것이 있다.
- 대결은 정당하게 1대1로 일기토를 벌여 한다.
- 일단 대결에 임하면 겁쟁이처럼 뒤를 보이지 않는다.
- 대결할 때 비겁하게 뒤를 치거나 기습하지 않는다.
- 갑옷에 있는 등 뒤의 틈을 가리는 것은 겁쟁이이다.
한국사의 세속오계나 유럽의 기사도처럼 이런 행동 규범이 생겨나는 것은 자연스러운 일이다. 이때의 일본의 무사도는 적어도 남북조 시대까지는, 동시대 유럽의 기사도보다도 철저히 지켜지는 것이었다. 비겁한 짓을 하지 않는 것은 그것이 평판, 명성과 관련되어 있었기 때문이었다. 헤이안 ~ 가마쿠라 막부 시기까지 무사는 명성을 높이는 것을 통해 자신의 세력을 강화하거나 더 나은 대우를 받을 수 있었다. 그래서 되도록 명성과 평판을 깎아 먹는 짓은 하지 않는 게 좋았고, 저울 위에 명성과 이익을 올려 놓고 손익 계산을 하여 어떤 일을 하는 게 더 이득이 될지를 결심하고 행동에 옮겼다.
또한 이 시기의 무사도에는 자신의 영지와 재산을 철저히 사수하는 것, 무예를 익혀 자신의 군사적 역량을 강화하는 것 등 현실적인 요소도 포함되어 있었으며 중세 유럽의 쌍무적 계약 관계처럼 주군과 가신의 의무를 강조했다. 예를 들어, 주군은 가신을 보호하고 공을 세우면 영지나 포상을 내릴 의무가 있었고 가신은 주군을 도와 열심히 싸워야 했다. 그래서 원 왕조의 일본 침공 때, 공을 세운 무사들에게 막부가 제대로 된 포상을 내려주지 못한 것은 무사들의 상당한 불만을 일으켰고, 이는 막부 붕괴의 요인 중 하나가 되었다.
3. 무로마치 ~ 에도 시대의 무사도
무로마치 막부 시대에는 무사도가 과거와는 다른 형태로 변화하기 시작하였다. 신흥 무장 세력인 악당이 발호하면서 뒤를 치거나 기습해도 이기는 게 장땡이라는 풍조가 생겼다.[1]. 원 왕조의 침공 이후로 집단전의 중요도가 높아지고, 오닌의 난으로 아시가루가 출현해 개인의 무용이 갖는 중요성은 지속적으로 떨어졌다. 또한 가신들이 하극상을 일으켜 주군을 몰아내고 그 자리를 차지하는 일도 빈번해지기 시작했다. 그래서 슈고, 슈고다이를 지내던 영주 가문이나 명망 높은 무사 가문들이 몰락하고 신분이 낮거나 혈통이 천한 가문들이 그 자리를 대신 차지하는 일도 자주 생겼다.전국 시대에는 무사도의 변화 양상이 매우 컸다. 혼란스러운 전란의 시대에는 무엇보다도 승리와 생존이 우선시되었으므로 과거처럼 기마 무사들 간의 1 : 1 대결을 하는 일은 완전히 사라졌다. 영주들 간의 군비 경쟁이 극한까지 치달아 중무장한 아시가루들을 통솔할 무사의 고용 수요와 숫자가 폭발적으로 증가했으며 영지를 관리하고 주민을 통제하는 능력도 중요해졌다. 이로 인해 무로마치 ~ 전국 시대의 무사들에게는 행정과 식산흥업, 법률과 외교 등 통치술 갖추는 것도 중요한 덕목이었다. 배신이 만연한 시대였던 만큼, 과거보다 훨씬 더 충성을 강조했으며 사회적 혼란이 심했기 때문에 영주들은 분국법을 제정해 휘하 가신들과 무사, 호족과 인민을 통제하려 했다.
전국 시대에는 글도 제대로 읽을 줄 모르는 무사들도 많았지만, 그와 반대로 학식과 교양을 갖춘 이들도 많았으며 교양의 가치가 낮지도 않았다. 도리어 예법과 교양을 잘 모르는 무사들이 무시당할 수 있는 환경이었기 때문에 교양이 부족한 이들이 교토의 공가 귀족이나 학식이 높은 무사들을 고용하는 일도 있었다. 그래서 이름을 날린 영주치고 학식과 교양을 쌓지 않은 이들이 없었고, 가신들도 주군 앞에서 망신당하지 않기 위해 다도, 와카, 렌카 등을 익히고 교양을 쌓았다. 그리고 무사들은 교양을 이용해 공가 귀족, 주변의 영주, 호족들과 교류하고 자신의 권위를 높이는데 써먹었다.
무사들이 조정과 막부의 관직을 대하는 태도도 상이했다. 실권을 잡았는데 번국인 자기 영지에는 태수 관직이 없는 것도 모르고 태수를 자칭할 정도로 막 나갔던 오다 노부나가 같은 사람도 있던 반면, 관동관령 우에스기 겐신, 다자이노다이니(太宰大弐) 오우치 요시타카처럼 고위 관직을 이용해 주변 세력을 제압하고 권위를 드높인 이들도 있었다. 관동의 기존 세력들을 몰아내며 세력을 확장한 후호조씨조차 막부와 조정의 권위를 완전히 무시하진 않아서 자신이 무력화한 코가쿠보 아시카가씨를 존속시켜 자신의 권위를 뒷받침하는 용도로 써먹었다.
이런 양면성을 가장 잘 보여주는 사례가 바로 도요토미 히데요시일 것이다. 아버지가 누군지 모르는 천한 아시가루 출신이었던 히데요시는 와카슈도 같은 무가 문화에 대해서는 잘 몰랐으며 자필 문건도 오 · 탈자가 많았다. 허나, 신분이 귀해지면서 다도와 예법, 노가쿠와 와카, 서예와 학식을 익히는데 힘써서 나름대로 공가 귀족들과 어울려 다녔으며 관백에게 요구되는 교양을 갖추었다.
전국 시대의 혼란을 정리하고 집권한 에도 막부는 사회 안정화를 위해서 새로운 형태의 무사도를 만들어 냈다. 최소 50만 단위에 달하는 하급무사들을 모조리 해고해서 평민으로 되돌려버렸다. 또한 당시 무사들이 행하던 사적 제재인 부레이우치도 정식 결투의 요건에 맞지 않으면 못하게 막았다. [에도 시대]] 도성에서는 오히려 사무라이들이 시비를 거는 평민을 피하는 일까지 일어났다. 또한 사무라이들은 특별한 일 없이는 영주가 기거하는 성 인근의 번화가(조카마치, 城下街)를 벗어날 수 없게 되어 있었다. 평화의 시대에 사무라이들이 반란 따위를 꾀할 싹 자체를 없애버리고자 이들을 묶어놓은 것이다. [2]
여기서 몇몇 사무라이들이 자신들만의 무사도를 창조해 내어 사무라이가 자신의 능력을 최대한으로 살리기 위하여 주군을 바꾸는 것은 물론이고 필요하다면 얼마든지 비열한 수를 써도 되는 게 무사도라고 주장하거나, 목숨을 초개처럼 내버리는 것을 무사도라고 주장하는 사례도 있었는데, 가장 대표적인 예시가 바 하가쿠레다. 허나, 이렇게 '왜곡'된 무사도는 일본의 식자층들에게 비판받았으며 막부와 영주들도 하가쿠레에 곱지 않은 시선을 보냈다.
에도 막부는 주군이 사형을 선고하면 이것을 달게 받아야 하는 죠이우치(上意討ち)[4]로 화답했다. 또한 주군에게 불충을 저지르면 할복을 명하거나 죄질이 악랄한 자는 참수했고, 재산 몰수와 개역 등 다양한 조치를 통해 무사들을 통제했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 추신구라 사건처럼 사회적으로 큰 논란이 되는 사건들이 발생했다.
막부의 지배를 받는 번들도 마찬가지로 사무라이들이 주군을 배신하거나, 제멋대로 자신이 속한 번을 떠나는 행위(탈번)를 시도한 사무라이들을 중형에 처해 사무라이들의 이탈을 철저하게 막았다. 심지어 해당 사무라이들이 떠나는 것을 알고도 막지 않았다면 그 사람들도 처벌했다. 이후, 막말 개항기부터 사무라이들을 지배하는 번의 영향력과 힘이 줄어들어 탈번을 막지 못하게 되자 사무라이들이 속속 탈번하게 된다. 대표적인 사례가 사카모토 료마였다.
4. 제국주의 시대의 무사도
그리고 메이지 유신이 일어나 도쿠가와 막부가 쓰러지자 계급사회의 통념인 무사도는 사민평등의 이름 아래 매장되었다. 사무라이라는 말만 들어도 치를 떨며, 마녀사냥처럼 없앴으므로 사무라이 정신은 이 시대로 끊긴 것과 다름없다. 그러나 일본이 급격히 군국주의 파시즘화하자 주군의 말 한마디에 부하가 죽음도 마다하지 않는 무사도의 이용가치를 발견한 군인계층이 이것을 발굴해내어 국민의 일반적인 도덕관념으로 교육하기 시작한다.당시 군국주의에 사용된 무사도는 니토베 이나조가 1900년에 영어로 집필해서 미국에서 출판한 Bushido: The Soul of Japan에 근거하였다. 니토베 이나조는 삿포로농학교를 졸업 후 미국의 존스 홉킨스 대학교 대학원에서 학위를 취득하고 서양인 여성과 결혼한 철저히 서구화한 일본인이자, 퀘이커 교도였는데, 한 서양인 친구에게 "서양에서는 종교 교육에 의해 도덕 교육이 이루어지는데 일본은 어떤 방식으로 도덕 교육이 이루어지냐?"라는 질문을 받고 당황했다고 한다. 그래서 일본의 여러 고전 자료와 어릴 적 할아버지에게서 들었던 무사 이야기들을 조합해서 <Bushido: The Soul of Japan>를 영어로 써서 미국에서 발표한다. 그런데 이것이 미국과 서유럽에서 히트를 치면서 베스트셀러가 되었고, 심지어 당시 시어도어 루스벨트 미국 대통령이 이 책을 읽고 극찬을 하면서 추신구라, 오륜서와 함께 본인의 애독서 목록에 올릴 정도로 유명해진다.[5]
쿠로후네 사건 이후 서구문명에 대한 심각한 컴플렉스를 가지고 있던 일본은 일본인 학자가 일본의 정신문화에 대해서 쓴 책이 서구에서 히트했다는 소식을 접하자 바로 일본어로 번역출판하였다. 이렇게 역수입된 무사도를 국민도덕으로 모두에게 주입시켰고, 이렇게 해서 무사도는 국내외적으로 일본을 상징하는 정신문화가 되었다. 이 과정에서 일본의 지배계층은 니토베 이나조가 제창한 부시도 개념 중에서 절대적인 충성 등 자신들에게 유리한 부분을 특히 강조하는 형태로 변형시키는 바람에 부시도는 사실상 군국주의를 미화하는 정신이 되어 버렸다. 즉 근대화 과정에서 흔히 보이는 전형적인 조작된 전통이다.[6] 어쩌면 처음부터 군국주의에 맞는 세뇌 교육책으로 무사도를 선택하여 계획적인 역수입을 한 것이라는 의혹이 있다. 즉 니토베 이나조가 제창한 무사도의 개념을 일본의 지배계층이 군국주의에 맞춰서 변형한 것이 당시의 무사도라고 할 수 있다.
애초에 절대적 충성만이 부시도의 모든 내용을 이루지는 않는다. 사무라이는 기본적으로 사대부와 현대 직장인과도 유사해서 충 외에도 효인의예지신과 따르면서 자신의 평판을 쌓아야 하므로, 주군이 이에 위배되는 명을 내리면, 사무라이는 목숨걸고 따르는 것이 아니라, 목숨걸고 간언을 해야 한다. 칼차고 무식한 무사들이라는 일반인들의 통념과 달리 이미 16세기 이후, 특히 도쿠가와 막부 형성 이후 일본은 거의 300년간 외국이나 다이묘들간 전쟁이 없었기에 사무라이는 일정 수준의 유학 지식을 갖춘 집단으로 변화한 상태였다.[7] 진정한 사무라이라면 주군의 잘못에 맞서야 한다는 게 진짜 전통이었으며, 죽음의 순간까지 무조건적인 충성을 바친다는 것이야말로 후대에 조작된 전통인 것이다. 그래서 군국주의 시대에 병사들을 사무라이의 후예라고 합리화하며, 여러 가지 막장 행위를 강요한 일본군 수뇌부는 정작 그 부시도가 없는, 명예마저 씹어먹는 막장집단이었다. 당시 실제 사무라이의 후손이거나, 사무라이를 자처한 사람들은 이러한 인과 충의 딜레마로 인하여 군부에 동참하지 않고 한적한 시골로 은둔하는 사례도 있었다고 한다. 물론 정신력으로 기술력이나 병력의 차를 극복할 수는 없기 때문에 일본은 압도적인 연합군의 화력과 전략전술의 뒤떨어짐 등의 여러 문제들로 인해 전쟁에서 패배하였고 패전으로 군대가 폐지되고 군인계층이 몰락함에 따라 무사도도 다시 한 번 역사 속으로 사라졌다. 역설적으로, 역사 속의 사무라이들은 승리를 위해 신식 무기와 신식 전술을 도입하는데 열심이었다. 에도 말기만 하더라도 군함이나 대포의 이용에는 꽤 적극적이었고.
이 결과, 미화되고 윤색되고 날조된 파시즘적, 군국적 무사도관이 유서깊은 일본 정통의 무사도관을 구축해버려 특히 동아시아 국가들 사이에서 무사도에 대한 안 좋은 편견을 많이 남긴 상태.
