강원특별자치도 동해안에 있는 시. 동쪽은 동해에 접하고 서쪽은 설악산을 경계로 인제군 북면, 남쪽으로는 양양군 강현면, 북쪽으로는 고성군 토성면과 접한다. 항구도시이다.

최북단의 위도는 북위 38° 13′50''(북위 38.23도)로, 대한민국 실효지배 지역 중 가장 최북단에 있는 시이며[7] 개성시는 물론이고 황해도 해주시 시가지보다 시가지가 위도가 더 높은 곳에 있다. 같은 강원도 내에서도 철원군 동송읍, 김화읍이나 화천군 상서면, 양구군 방산면 등 민통선이 지나가는 지역들과 같은 위도에 있다.[8]

강릉시의 주문진과 더불어 동해안 주요 어업 전진기지 중 하나이며, 설악산국립공원이 시 면적의 절반 정도를 차지하고 있다.

속초시는 대표적인 국내 여행지 중 한 곳으로, 관광산업이 발달하여 있다. 관광도시답게 음식점과 숙박시설이 많이 있으며 2016년 ~ 2017년에 동해고속도로와 서울양양고속도로가 개통되면서 관광객 수가 크게 증가하였다.

근처에 인제군이나 고성군 같은 최전방지역이 있어서 (주로 휴가 나온) 군인들을 쉽게 볼 수 있는 도시 중 하나다.

1963년 승격 전까지는 양양군의 일부였기 때문에 대부분의 역사를 양양군과 공유했다.

4. 지명 유래

조선시대(1760년 이전): 양양도호부 소천면(所川面) 속초리#
1912년: 소천면-도문면(道門面, 현 속초시 도문동) 합병, 도천면 속초리
1937년: 도천면 → 속초면 개칭#, 면사무소가 대포리(현 속초시 대포동)에서 속초리로 이전
1942년: 속초면 → 속초읍 승격
1963년: 속초읍 → 속초시 승격

속초라는 이름은 오랫동안 리였다가[12] 1937년에 '속초면'을 통해 읍면 급 행정구역이 되었고, 1963년 속초시 승격으로 시군 급 행정구역이 되었다.

속초(束草)라는 이름의 유래는 크게 2가지로 나뉜다. 하나는 설악산의 울산바위에다 새끼줄을 둘렀다는 옛 전설에서 유래한다는 이야기가 있다.

전설에 따르면, 어느 날, 설악산에 울산바위라는 바위가 있음을 알고 울산을 지배하는 사또가 울산바위 근처에 있는 신흥사의 주지에게 "우리 울산바위가 거기 있으니 너희들이 우리에게 바위세를 내라!" 라고 강요했다. 그리하여 울며 겨자먹기로 몇 년 동안이나 바위세를 바쳤다가, 신흥사의 동자승이 "우리도 울산바위 때문에 농사도 못하고 불편하다. 사또께서 우리에게 세를 내든가, 아니면 다시 바위를 가져가시오!" 라고 반박했다.

결국, 반박을 하지 못하고 말문이 막히면서 논리가 궁색해진 울산 사또는 "재로 꼰 새끼줄로 바위를 묶는다면 바위를 가져가겠다." 라고 억지를 부리지만, 동자승은 마을 사람들을 사서 '청초호'와 '영랑호' 에서 자라는 해초로 새끼줄을 꼬아서 소금물에 푹 절인 뒤 울산바위를 묶었다. 그리고, 며칠 뒤에 소금물이 마르자 새끼줄에 불을 붙였는데 소금기 때문에 안은 멀쩡하고 겉만 새까맣게 타버렸다. 이후 울산 사또에게 "자! 우리가 사또의 요구대로 했으니 어서 바위를 가져가시오!" 라고 재촉하자, 울산 사또는 스스로 졌다면서 아무 말도 못하고 그대로 돌아간 뒤 더 이상 바위세를 요구하지 못했다고 한다.

그래서, 이 사건 이후 청초호와 영랑호 사이의 지역을 '묶을 속(束)'자와 '풀 초(草)' 자를 써서 "풀을 엮다" 라는 뜻의 '속초(束草)' 라는 지명이 유래했다고 한다. 여담으로, 서울 강서구에 있는 광주바위도 도로 가져가라는 비슷한 내용의 후일담 격의 설화가 있다. #

또한, 다른 설은 속초의 지형이 소가 누워서 있는 형상이라 풀을 묶어서 먹여주어야 한다는 데서 유래했다는 이야기이다. 결초보은에서 비롯된 속초가 가장 유력한 설이다.

속초의 순우리말 이름은 '풀묶음'이고, 지금도 일부에서도 사용되고 있다. 이는 속초(束草)가 한자로 束(묶을 속)에 草(풀 초)이기 때문에 이를 그대로 직역한 것이다.

5. 지리

강원특별자치도의 시/군들 중 동해, 태백처럼 면적이 매우 작은 도시로[13], 아직 도농 통합을 하지 않았기 때문에 행정 단위도 동(洞) 단위 지역만 있다. 한때 역사적으로 같은 지역에 속하였던 양양과 통합을 시도했지만, 속초로의 쏠림을 우려한 양양군민들의 반대로 무산되었다. 양양과 통합이 실패하자 고성과의 통합도 추진해봤지만[14], 고성 역시 양양과 같은 이유로 통합을 반대하여 무산되었다.

영동 북부(영북) 지방에서 유일한 시 지역이자, 시내 중심부와 항포구가 근접해 있는 것이 특징이다. 또한 남한 최북단 시이기도 하며, 시역(市域)이 전부 38선 이북에 있는 유일한 시다. 사실 영동 지역이 생각보다 위도가 북쪽에 있다. 영동 남부인 동해시 시내(천곡동, 평릉동 일대)가 서울 부도심인 목동, 강남, 잠실과 비슷한 위도고 영동 중앙인 강릉시 시내(옥천동, 교동, 포남동 일대)가 경기 북부 중심도시인 의정부와 비슷하다.

한때 북한에 잠깐 지배받았기도 하고 지금까지도 북한과 거리상 가까운 지역이라서 그런지[15][16] 보따리를 들고 아이와 함께 북쪽으로 손을 향하고 있는 수복탑이라든가, 실향민들[17][18]이 정착해 만들어진 아바이마을 [19]이 있다. 참고로 인구의 60%~70% 정도가 실향민 출신이라고 한다. 이북사람들의 영향 때문인지 속초 사투리는 강릉 근방의 영동 방언에 함경도 지역의 특징[20]도 보유한 매우 독특한 사투리다. 다만 현지에서는 함경도 사투리를 쓰는 사람들이 남아 있던 시절에는 함경도 사람들이 경상도 급의 성조를 사용하여 자기와도 다른 억센 말투라고도 여겼다고 하니 분단 이전에 동해안 북쪽의 사람들과 교류하던 흔적이 남은 것으로 추정된다. 깽스맨에서 이진호가 하는 말투가 속초 사투리다.

잘 알려져 있듯이 6.25 전쟁 이전에는 38선 이북으로 북한 땅이었는데, 6.25 전쟁 발발 며칠 전 6월 22일 오후 3시경 남침을 기획 중인 조선인민군 부대들이 속초읍에 집결 완료하였고 24일에는 개인 소지품과 각종 군사 서류들이 몰수되어 속초 군당으로 보내졌다. 곳곳에는 이미 각종 탄약상자, 휘발유통, 기타 보급품 상자들이 무더기로 쌓여있고 누구나 전쟁을 예견할 수 있었다. 한국군이 수복/탈환하기 이전인 그 당시에는 해주시를 제외하면 조선민주주의인민공화국의 실질적인 최남단 도시였다.

이곳은 또한 양양에 과거 속해 있다 보니, 속초에서는 양양군 출신도 토박이로 취급한다고 한다. 텃세는 굉장히 심한 편이다. 젊은 사람들은 그나마 텃세는 덜하지만 그래도 학연, 지연은 이 지역 사회에서 결코 무시할 수가 없다.

서울에서 가장 가까운 동해안 도시다.[21]

대한민국 대표 명산인 설악산이 속초 서쪽에 있다.

5.1. 기후

동해안이다 보니 연교차가 작고 겨울에 그리 춥지 않다. 1월 평균 기온은 0.1℃로 온난 습윤 기후에 속하며, 비슷한 위도에 있는 영서 지방인 철원군, 화천군, 양구군, 인제군 등 최전방 지역보다 5~8℃가량 높다. 8월 평균 기온은 24.1℃다. 여름은 시원해서 기온이 높지 않아 휴가지로도 좋다. 바로 아래에 강릉은 여름에도 후텁지근한 것을 감안하면 여기는 봄~가을에 대체로 선선하다.[22] 참고로 속초 기상관측소는 속초가 아니라 고성군 토성면에 위치해 있다.

5.2. 가뭄 극복

2021년 이전까지 속초시는 가뭄에 시달려왔다. 지형적 요인 및 적은 강수량으로 말미암아 가뭄방재시설 확충 이전까지는 만성적인 물부족이 일상화되었으며 다른 지자체의 도움까지 받아가며 위기를 극복해왔다.

2015년에는 속초 및 인근 지자체의 하천이 바닥을 드러낼 정도로 가물었다는 기사가 뜨기도 했으며 # 장마 전선이 북상하고 나서야 제한 급수 조치가 해제되기도 했다. # 특히 2018년에는 전국 각지의 인도적 지원을 통해 위기를 관리하다 인근 양양군의 협력으로 물부족 위기를 넘겼으며 # 2019년에도 겨울 가뭄으로 인해 지역 하천인 쌍천에 비닐을 설치하는 고육책을 쓰게 되는 등 곤경에 처한 적이 있다. # 이러한 현상은 앞서 서술한대로 2021년 가뭄방재시설이 확충되면서 과거의 경험이 되었으며 다른 지자체의 도움을 받아가며 물부족 현상을 해결해야 했었던 나날들이 끝났음을 천명할 수 있게 되었다. #

강원특별자치도 시군 내 인구 순위로는 원주시, 춘천시, 강릉시, 동해시에 이어 5위지만 면적은 가장 좁은 곳이라 인구 밀도로는 도내 1위이다.

비수도권 소도시치고는 인구 유지가 제법 이뤄지는 편이다. 2019년 5월 8만 1,500명 대가 붕괴되면서 2~3년 내로 8만 명 대도 붕괴될 거란 위협을 느끼기도 했지만# 서울양양고속도로 개통, 춘천속초선 개통 확정 등의 호재에 힘입어 인구가 다시 늘어났다. #

관광지로 각광받게 되면서 속초 KCC스위첸, 속초자이, 힐스테이트 속초, 속초 롯데캐슬 인더스카이 등 대형 건설사들이 속속들이 아파트를 건설하고 있다. 주민등록상 인구에 비해서는 과도한 공급량이지만 외부에서 세컨드하우스 수요가 높아진 상황이라 2022년 전국 아파트값 상승률 1위를 찍기도 했다. #

그럼에도 강원도 영동 지역 인구 감소의 여파에서 피해갈 수 없었는지, 2025년 9월 8만 선이 붕괴되었다.

7. 경제

속초시의 주 산업은 어업과 관광업, 그리고 부동산이다. 속초시 시 재정이 취득세와 등록세로 해결되는 수도권 도시 구조로 변해버렸다. 사실 취/등록세는 도세 즉 속초시가 가져가는 세금이 아니다. 도세는 강원특별자치도청의 수입으로 취득세 수입의 3%를 수수료명목으로 속초시에 징수교부금으로 돌려준다. 즉 속초시의 부동산 폭등은 강원특별자치도 재정에 도움이 되는 것이다. 전국적으로 부동산 침체기에 있어 취득세 수입이 급격하게 감소하고 있지만 경기도 화성과 더불어 강원도 속초는 신축 빌딩과 신규 아파트가 계속 들어서고 있어 취득세 수입이 여전히 증가하고 있는 추세이다.

원래 속초시는 관광지로 유명했는데, 2016년 동해고속도로 양양~속초 구간 및 2017년 서울양양고속도로 동홍천~양양 구간이 개통하면서 서울에서 자동차로 2시간 반 만에 속초를 찍게 되면서 관광 수요가 폭증하였다. 설악산 국립공원, 아야진 해수욕장, 속초 중앙시장, 속초해수욕장등 각종 관광 상품이 즐비하다. 그리고 포켓몬 GO가 한국에서 불가능하던 시절 속초시와 고성군은 대한민국이 아니라 타영역으로 분류돼 포켓몬 GO를 할 수 있는 지역이 되면서 태초마을에 비견되어 "속초마을"로 불리는 포켓몬 성지가 되었다.

그리고 문재인 정부에서 속초는 그야말로 부동산 시세가 억 자리를 하루가 다르게 갈아치우는 곳이 되어버렸다. 2018년 이후 속초 일대의 부동산 가격이 거의 50배 넘게 폭등하고, 2021년 속초의 한 아파트 분양권이 16억 원을 넘어섰는데, 기사 이는 수도권 지역민들의 여름용 별장 수요가 속초시로 몰리는 탓이다. 결국 속초에 건설 중인 GS건설의 디오션자이 아파트 분양권이 17억을 돌파하면서 강원도 역사상 가장 비싼 아파트가 되었다. 기사 2022년 속초는 전국에서 가장 높은 아파트 가격 상승률을 기록하였는데, 수도권에서 지리적으로 가장 가까운 동해안 도시 그리고 설악산과 동해안으로 이어지는 관광라인이 아파트 수요로 이어진 현상이다.

동해안 지역에 호텔 건설도 성업 중이다. 호텔 건설이 폭증하면서 속초시 해변지역의 환경 오염 이슈도 커지고 있다. 기획부동산 업체도 수도권에서 제재를 받으니까 제재가 없는 강원도로 몰려왔는데, 특히 속초시 일대에 기획부동산이 엄청 많이 성업 중이다.

2022년 1월 5일 동해북부선과 춘천속초선의 기공식이 진행됐고, 이 두 노선이 2028년 상반기 개통하면 속초역이 환승역이 된다. 용산역에서 경춘선과 춘천속초선을 통해 2시간이면 속초역까지 도달하며, 부산 부전역에서 출발해도 동해선을 타고 4시간만에 속초역까지 올 수 있게 된다. 노학동 일대가 또다른 부동산 핫 플레이스가 되는 것이다.

국가산단과 일반산업단지는 한곳조차 없지만 대포 제1,2,3농공단지 세군데가 들어서 근근히 지역살림에 보탬을 주고 있고 속초해양산업단지지원센터도 들어서 있다.

10. 생활문화

10.1. 음식

속초는 이웃한 도시인 강릉과 더불어 음식이 맛있는 도시란 평판이 있다. 속초를 대표하는 음식으로는 코다리 냉면, 아바이순대, 오징어순대, 명태순대, 식해 등이 있는데 원래는 함경도에서 유래된 음식들이다. 실향민들, 특히 함경도 지방에서 월남한 사람들이 모여서 형성된 도시라는 속초의 지역 특성이 음식에서도 드러나는 셈이다. 중앙시장이라는 전통시장이 있는데, 이곳에서는 닭강정과 순대국밥이 별미이다. 씨앗호떡 또한 별미이다. 중앙시장의 한 호떡집은 그야말로 '호떡집에 불났다'라는 표현도 과장이 아닐 정도로 미어터진다. 30분을 기다려야 먹을 수 있을 정도다.

닭강정은 원래는 10,000원대 초반의 싼 가격을 자랑하고 1.5마리 정도의 초월적 양을 자랑하였지만, 어느 가게에서 방송을 타더니 메이커화를 추진하여 너도 나도 거기에 따라가 버려, 가격도 메이커 치킨급으로 올라버리고 양도 적어지면서 가게마다 있던 특성도 사라지면서 실제로 속초시 사람들을 비롯해 옆동네 양양군 사람들은 평소에 잘 안사갈 정도가 되었다고 한다. 더구나 이제는 옛날 속초 닭강정의 쫄깃한 식감이 사라지면서 맛도 그다지 다른 지역 평범한 닭강정에 비해 맛있는 편도 아니게 되었다. 서울 재래시장에서 산 닭강정과 이 지역 닭강정을 눈 가리고 먹어보면 분간도 안 될 지경. 특히 속초에는 한 닭강정집이 유명하고 체인점을 낼 정도지만, 정작 다른 가게와 큰 차이가 없다. 다른 닭강정집에서는 부담 없는 3,000원짜리도 팔고 있다.

또한 이곳에는 홍게도 유명하다. 속초 중앙시장엔 대게보단 홍게가 항상 있으니 언제든 구입이 가능할 정도라고 한다.

그리고 속초 하면 또 빼놓을 수 없는 것이 속초 코다리 냉면이다. 고구마나 감자녹말 및 메밀녹말로 뽑은 면발에 뭔가 같이 먹을 반찬이 없어서 흔히 남아돌던 명태나 가자미식해를 얹어 먹게 된 것이 기원인데, 그게 참 매콤하면서 고소한 것이 맛있다. 다만 가게마다 퀄리티 차이가 많이 있으니 인터넷을 너무 믿지 말고 시장 할머님들께 물건 하나 사드리고 물어물어 가는 것도 추천한다.

속초 시내에서 울산바위 쪽으로 가는 길(미시령 옛길)에 있는 학사평은 순두부집이 몰려 있다. 기존의 빨간 순두부찌개와는 다르게 맷돌에서 갈아낸 하얗고 고소하며 부드러우면서도 약간 투박한 느낌의 순두부 맛이 상당히 좋으니 설악산 등반 후 시간이 된다면 먹어보자.

그 외 별미로, 아바이마을에서 처음 만들기 시작한 순대 3종류가 있다. 아바이순대, 오징어순대 그리고 명태순대. 그런데 이것들이 원래는 훨씬 이북에 해당하는 함경도 음식인 관계로 속초 현지인에겐 인기가 별로 없었는데, 1박 2일에 너무 맛나게 나오자 값도 값대로 올라버리고, 본래 열심히 만들던 음식이 아니어서인지 퀄리티도 들쭉날쭉하다. 게다가 수요가 공급을 초월하는 사태가 벌어지자 아예 공장을 돌려서 공급하게 되는 막장 상황까지 벌어진 관계로, 아바이순대의 경우는 그냥 직접 사다가 삶거나 쪄 먹는 것을 추천하며, 오징어순대의 경우는 중앙시장[54]에서 사다 먹는 것을 추천한다. 명태순대의 경우는 만드는 수고에 비해 수지타산이 맞지 않는지 평소에 알던 사람이 아닌 이상 사실상 구경이 불가능해졌다. 그리고 젓갈(특히 가자미 식해, 명태식해, 명란젓 등), 곰치탕(물곰탕), 해장국, 물회, 막국수 등이 유명하다.

10.3. 문화시설

조양동에 메가박스 속초가 있고 금호동에 롯데시네마 속초가 개관했으나 2023년 3월부로 영업중단에 들어간 상태이다. 그 외 시에서 운영하는 속초문화예술회관이 아담한 규모로 영랑동에 있다. 이곳에 2020년 2월 창립한 속초문화재단이 위치해 있으며, 2022년 5월 속초문화관광재단으로 명칭이 변경되었다. 같은 해 10월에는 제5차 예비 문화도시에 선정되는 기염을 토하기도 하였다.

10.4. 의료기관

종합병원으로 속초보광병원(299병상)과 강원특별자치도속초의료원(152병상)이 있으며 대부분의 병원급 진료는 이 두 병원이 전담한다. 상위 기능이 필요하면 영동지방 여느 시군들이 그렇듯이 강릉아산병원으로 간다.

10.5. 스포츠

그 동안 프로스포츠와는 거리가 멀었지만, 2015년 강원 FC가 홈경기장인 강릉종합운동장의 리모델링 등 여러 가지 사정으로 한 시즌 동안 홈 경기를 속초종합경기장에서 치른 적이 있으며 2020년 현재 K5리그에 소속되어 있는 속초 예맥 FC가 있다.

2023년부터 워터밤 전국투어로 속초시를 개최하고, 2024년도 속초시를 전국투어로 워터밤 개최지가 되었다. 그리고 2025년 워터밤 전국투어를 폐지했지만 워터밤 속초는 살아남아 속초시가 워터밤 영구 개최지가 되었다. 2025년부터 워터밤은 서울(고양), 부산, 속초 3곳만 시행한다. 워터밤 동해안 대표 도시로 강릉시를 제치고 속초시가 선정된 것이다.[55]

과거에는 양양군 지역까지 관할했다. 이는 경찰서, 교육지원청도 마찬가지인데, 경찰서는 2025년 이후 양양경찰서가 개서되었고, 교육지원청도 곧 신설될 예정이다. 속초와 양양이 동일 생활권이자 합쳐도 인구가 10만 정도에 불과하기 때문에 굳이 분리하려는 자체가 낭비라는 일각의 시선도 존재한다. 하지만 속초와 양양은 인구 자체는 적어도 관광객이 천만명 단위로 오는 곳이라 속초경찰서, 속초소방서, 속초교육청 조직으로는 관광객을 단속하며 양양까지 담당할 수 있는 행정력이 딸렸다. 그래서 앞의 말을 하는 것같은 반발을 무릅쓰고 속초와 양양 행정조직을 분리하는 것이다. 지역 인구의 100배가 넘는 관광객이 오는 곳이라 공무원 한 명이 담당해야 하는 관광객 사건사고 단속 건 수가 만 건 단위여서 업무량이 홍대거리 홍대경찰서 수준이었다고... 춘천속초선, 동해북부선 철도 개통 이후에는 지금 관광객의 최소 3배는 더 몰려올텐데 확장한 조직으로도 관광객을 감당하기 힘들다.

영화 사잇소리, 이름에게가 이곳에서 촬영되었다.
TOEIC 고사장이 있을법하지만 없다. 영동지방에서 토익 고사장이 있는 곳은 강릉과 삼척밖에 없다. 속초에 사는 토익 응시생들은 주로 강릉이나 춘천으로 간다. 공무원 시험도 강릉에 가서 봐야했으나 2020년에는 코로나바이러스감염증-19의 영향으로 처음으로 속초에서 시험을 실시했다.
최근에는 시장에 외국인들이 많아졌다. #

속초시 제2선거구 (노학동, 조양동): 김시성 (4선)[7] 군 지역까지 모두 포함하면 바로 윗 동네인 강원도 고성군이 대한민국 최북단이다.[8] 다만 이렇게나 높은 위도에도 불구하고, 동부전선이 상당히 위로 올라간 탓에 휴전선까지의 거리는 약 35km로 서울 바로 북쪽에 있는 지역인 고양시나 의정부시만큼 휴전선에서 멀다. 물론 저 두 지역 다 상비사단 지역이라 전방인 것은 함정이지만. 심지어 남북통일 이후에는 앞의 이유로 인해 여기에서 중국까지의 최단거리는 수도권으로 치면 지금처럼 경기 북부 정도가 아닌, 무려 서울 시내 수준만큼 멀어지게 된다.[9] 녹색은 설악초록(#00A13A), 남색은 동해파랑(#213A8F)이라는 이름이 지어졌다.[10] 바탕색이 동해파랑(#213A8F)일 경우에 사용한다. 이때 설악초록은 밝게 변경하여(#87BD25) 사용된다.[11] 바탕색이 동해파랑(#213A8F) 이외의 색일 때 사용한다.[12] 언제부터 '속초리'로 불렸는지는 정확히 다루고 있는 자료가 별로 없다. 애초에 리급 행정구역까지 면밀히 기록하는 자료가 그렇게 많지 않기 때문인 듯하다.[13] 물론 강원도 시/군 치고 작다는 것이지, 인구 대비로 작다는 것은 아니다.[14] 실제로 2000년 지역번호 개편 이전에는 속초와 고성이 0392 번호를 공유했다. 참고로 양양은 0396 번호를 독자적으로 사용.[15] 속초는 북한의 개성이나 해주보다 위도가 높다. (개성, 해주는 북위 38°에 딱 붙어 있고, 속초는 북위 38° 12'이다.) 휴전선이 동쪽으로 갈수록 높아지기 때문에, 북한과의 같은 거리라고 해도 동쪽에 있는 지역일수록 서쪽에 있는 지역에 비해 위도가 높다. 속초와 같은 위도에 있는 한반도 서부 경의축선 도시는 황해도 평산군이고, 서해안 도시는 황해도 장연군 장연읍이다.[16] 사실 영서 지방만 가도 속초와 같은 위도상에 양구군 방산면, 화천군 상서면, 철원군 김화읍, 동송읍 등 민간인 출입통제선이 읍내 바로 위를 통과하는 동네들이 나온다. 경기도 최북단이나 다름없는 신탄리역의 위도가 속초시청의 위도와 같다.[17] 지금은 실향민 1세대는 대부분 사망했고 실향민 후손들이 많다.[18] 대부분 함경남도, 그 중에서도 함흥시, 홍원군, 북청군, 이원군, 단천시 등 해안가 출신이 많았다.[19] 행정구역상 청호동에 속한다.[20] '-나?'라고 묻기보다 함경도처럼 '-니?'라고 묻는 경우가 있었다. 사실 함경도를 포함한 동해안권 전체가 교류가 많았다보니 함경도에서 가지는 특징 자체도 영동 지방은 물론 경상도와도 공유하는 부분이 있다고 한다.
