도시의 외로운 밤 풍경을 전자음으로 그린 UK 개러지의 걸작.

신비주의를 고수하는 영국 출신 프로듀서 Burial이 등장한 2000년대는 영국 일렉트로닉 음악에 중대한 변화가 일어나던 시기였습니다. 1990년대에 등장했던 정글과 개러지가 더욱 세분된 하위 장르와 씬으로 나눠지기 시작했죠. 다변화된 일렉트로닉 음악 중에서도 어둡고 쓸쓸한 사운드에 초점을 맞춘 Burial의 두 번째 앨범 'Untrue'는 발매와 동시에 상징적인 작품으로 자리 잡았습니다.

덥스텝 앨범 역사상 최고의 명반 중 하나이자 UK 개러지, 클래식 덥스텝에서도 손꼽히는 명반[1]으로 꼽히는 베리얼의 대표작이다. 평단의 극찬을 받은 데뷔앨범 Burial 이후 다음 앨범에 대한 부담감과 고민의 영향으로 매우 어두운 노래를 만들고 있었으나 오랜 기간 동안의 제작에 지쳐, 이를 폐기한 대신 스스로를 다독이고 응원하고자 조금 더 활기차고 밝은 정글, 개러지 음악을 만들자해서 나온 것이 이 앨범이지만, 사실 이 앨범도 전작만큼이나 차분한 분위기를 띈다.[2] 이렇게 침울한 분위기가 가득하면서도 90년대~00년대 R&B 트랙에서 따온 많은 샘플링[3]을 피치 조정, 타임 스크래칭 등 자유자재로 뜯어고치고 비트에 적재적소에 조합해 그만의 꼼꼼한 프로듀싱 능력이 전작보다 더 발전한 모습을 보여주었다. 또한 전반적으로 모든 트랙이 어둡고 침울했던 전작과 달리, 이번 앨범은 어둡지만 샘플링을 굉장히 감성적인 하나의 보컬처럼 프로듀싱해 아늑하고 따뜻한 분위기도 띄고 있다.

이미 데뷔앨범에서 받은 찬사 그 이상으로 평단의 극찬이 쏟아진 것은 물론, 2000년대를 대표하는 일렉트로닉 뮤직 앨범이자 지금까지도 덥스텝, 개러지 장르를 통틀어 손꼽히는 앨범으로 평가받고 있다. 이 평가는 시간이 지남에도 여전해 Rate Your Music 덥스텝, 퓨쳐 개러지 장르 부문에서 지금도 1위를 기록하고 있으며 Apple Music 베스트 앨범 100선에 선정된 앨범 중에 4개밖에 없는 일렉트로닉 앨범이자 유일한 덥스텝, 개러지 앨범이다. 평론뿐만 아니라, 오피셜 차트에서도 앨범 차트 58위, 댄스 앨범 차트 4위까지 기록해 전작과 달리 대중적으로도 성공을 거두었다. 또한 이때까지 철저하게 익명으로 활동했던 베리얼은 이 앨범의 대성공으로 본인의 실명을 공개하고 언론에 인터뷰를 제공하게 되었다.

4. 기타

훗날 이 음반을 출시한 Hyperdub에서 2024년 릴리즈한 Iceboy Violet & Nueen[4]의 <Closer>라는 익스페리멘탈 그라임 넘버에서, 이미 Shell of Light에서 사용된 바 있는 Cruisin'[5]의 샘플링이 차용된 것으로 보인다.[6]

게임을 평소 좋아하는 베리얼답게, 앨범의 대표 트랙인 Archangel은 하프라이프와 메탈기어 솔리드 2의 오프닝 음향 샘플링을 사용했다.

[1] 사실 이 앨범은 덥스텝보다 개러지, 특히 투스텝 개러지나 퓨처 개러지에 더 가까운 앨범이나, 덥스텝 비트도 있기에 덥스텝 앨범으로도 주로 분류되는 편이다.[2] 베리얼 본인 또한 이번 앨범을 제작할 때 일부러 해가 다 지고 난 저녁부터 프로듀싱을 했다고 언급했다.[3] 디안젤로, 시에라, 알리야, 어셔 등 거의 대부분을 R&B, 소울 장르 트랙에서 가져왔다.[4] Nueen이라는 아티스트가 래퍼 Iceboy Violet을 피쳐링한 형태.[5] 정확히는 디안젤로의 1995년도 커버판이다.[6] 인공지능 그림으로 만든듯한 뮤직비디오가 특징인데 유튜브 영상에 달린 레이블측 댓글에 따르면, 해당 뮤비의 제작방향은 의도된 것으로 보인다.
