수준, 품질 등을 구분하는 것으로, 이것을 구분하는 제도가 등급제이다.

1.1. S급의 유래

동양에서 A 급 이상을 S 급으로 표현하는 것은 일본의 등급제에서 유래하였다. 19세기 말의 일본 극장이나 철도의 좌석 등급은 상중하 3단계로 나뉘어 있었는데 이것이 일등석, 이등석, 삼등석으로 바뀌었고 20세기 초인 1906년에 들어선 어느 잡지사가 이런 123등제 위에 '특등'을 신설하였다. 같은 시기 온천여관의 사용료도 특등 1등 2등 3등 등외의 5급제가 되었고 1911년엔 철도차량에 특등을 설정하고 이를 Special Class로 표기, 1918년엔 극장에서도 특등석이나 특급석이 추가되고 전후인 1960년, 뮤지컬의 특별석을 Special Seat로 표기하고 이를 S석으로 줄여 부르면서 본격적인 S급의 사용이 시작된다.

1972년 레드 제플린의 일본 라이브에서 부도칸의 좌석에 S석이 설정되고, 1983년 경륜에선 선수등급의 상위에 'S급'(경륜에선 Star의 S로 인식)을 추가하였으며 이것이 미디어를 통해 널리 퍼지며 1989년 스프리건(만화)에서 'S급 공작원'이라는 표현이, 1993년 유유백서에서 'S급 요괴'가 등장하였다. 그 후 스트리트 파이터 2를 시작으로 하는 대전 격투 게임의 붐이 세계로 번지며 A 상위를 S로 표기하는 일본의 방식이 서구권에 알려지게 되었다.[1]

서구권에서는 A 이상은 보통 +나 A의 수를 늘리는 식으로 표현한다.(AAA 게임 등) 때문에 20세기 말엔 게임에 S 랭크가 등장하면 일본산 게임이라는 것을 알 수 있다고 이야기 될 정도였으나, 동양권 전체에 퍼지고 21세기 초엔 그 게임들이 진출하면서 서구권의 서브컬쳐에서도 일부 쓰임이 확인되고 있다.

하지만 여전히 ABC로 알파벳 순서에 따라 급이 떨어지는 체계에서 갑자기 S나 U[2]같은 기타 알파벳이 A의 상위개념으로 등장하는 것은 '123 등급체계에서 7을 가장 행운이란 뜻이라며 1을 넘는 최상위로 올리는 것'과 마찬가지의 뜬금없는 일로 여기지기도 한다.

상식적으로 생각하면 등급이 낮은 1성이 가장 많고, 등급이 제일 높은 3성이나 5성이 가장 희소할 것 같지만, 실제로 서비스중인 게임들을 보면 3성이나 5성 캐릭터가 가장 많이 출시되고, 2성, 4성 같은 캐릭터는 거의 나오지 않는다.#[8] 이유는 만드는데 드는 시간이나 비용은 거의 차이나지 않는데 매출은 많게는 수십배까지 차이가 나기 때문이다. 3성일 경우를 예로 보면 2성은 3성보다 성능이 떨어지므로 선호도가 떨어지고, 게임 내 육성재화 수급 구조상 오히려 2성이 3성보다 키우기가 어려운 경우가 많기 때문이다.# 그래서 오래된 가챠 게임일 수록 3성이나 5성 캐릭터가 많고, 최하등급 1성이 그 다음, 그 다음으로 2성이나 4성이 제일 적게 분포하게 된다. 1성 캐릭터는 그나마 무료 배포가 되는 경우가 많기 때문에 중간 성급보다는 많이 분포하는 경우가 많다.

A급이나 R급보다 SSS급이나 SSR급 캐릭터가 더 많이 나오는 경우가 많다.
