1. 설명

해안지역과 대비되는, 섬 지역이나 바다 및 해안가 등과 인접하지 않고 사방이 다른 지역으로 둘러싸인 지역의 총칭. 국가 단위로는 내륙국이라고 한다.

내륙지역의 단점은 바다가 없기 때문에 해산물, 수산물의 직접적 생산이 어렵고 어촌도 존재하지 않으며 항구나 포구도 없다. 물론 큰 강-큰 하천과 호수와 저수지, 운하를 따라 일부 내륙지역은 내수면 어업을 활성화 시키고 중.소규모의 포구와 나루터가 있는 경우가 있었지만, 21세기 현재 대한민국의 4대강은 낙동강하굿둑[1]과 북한의 서해갑문을 포함한 방조제등으로 막혀있거나 한강의 경우 최하류가 휴전선 인접지역인 등 강을 이용한 수운은 사실상 죽어있는 상태이다.[2] 원래 해안지역이었고 행정구역개편이나 지형변화로 인해 내륙지역이 된 김해시와 양산시, 나주시, 논산시, 익산시등이 항구를 갖추기 어려워 도시발전에 상당한 고생이었다고 한다. 해외에서는 드물지만 강내지 운하폭이 넓어서 독일의 함부르크, 네덜란드의 암스테르담, 중국의 난징과 항저우, 광저우, 허페이, 몰도바의 다뉴브강 기우르기울레슈티, 러시아의 모스크바등 일부 내륙항구도시들도 있다.

또한 과거에는 자연적 토사퇴적과 간척, 행정구역 개편으로 내륙이 되어 항구도시로서 기능이 상실된 지역들도 종종 있지만 운하건설이나 준설로 겨우 항구도시[3]로서 회복한 일부지역도 있다.

내륙지역의 장점은 사방 및 사면이 다른 지역과 둘러싸여 있다는 점 때문에 인접지역과의 육로상 교류 등이 활발한 편이고 때로는 경계선 문제 등으로 다른 지역과 분쟁 등을 벌이기도 한다.

농축임산물 생산이 성한 편이며 이들 지역 대다수가 주로 농업, 축산업, 임업이나 서비스업, 사무직, 노무직 등이 대부분 많은 편이다. 어업 및 수산업은 없으나 일부 지역의 경우 대표적으로 나주시의 홍어요리와 안동시의 간고등어, 논산시 강경읍의 젓갈, 홍성군 광천읍의 새우젓, 영광군 법성면의 굴비, 인제군의 용대리 황태처럼 바다가 끼어있는 다른 지역에서 수산물을 공수하여 재생산하거나 내륙 안에 강이나 호수와 인접한 경우 민물고기 등을 수렵 및 채취, 양식업까지 하는 내수면 어업을 할 수 있으며 심지어 한강과 임진강이 있어 과거 배로 짐을 나르던 주운(舟運)의 도시였고 조선시대 21개 나루와 포구가 있었던 파주시와 홍어를 영산강~서해안 뱃길로 통하여 영산포구까지 실어 날랐던 전남 나주, 충남 논산의 강경포구, 홍성의 옹암포구의 사례대로 바다에가서 어획으로 하고 내수면 어항에 수송하는 내륙지역도 있다.
