1. 개요

기후현([ruby(岐阜県, ruby=ぎふけん)], Gifu-ken)은 일본 혼슈 주부 지방에 있는 현이다. 현청소재지는 기후시이다.

담배·양파·감이 많이 나며, 목재·납·도기[4], 일본도 등이 유명하다. 현청 소재지는 기후 시. 산지·고원·구릉이 현의 대부분을 차지하고, 남서부에 좁은 평야가 펼쳐진다.

북동부 현경(縣境)에는 3,000m급의 산이 솟은 히다(飛騨)산맥이, 북서부 현경에는 2,000m 이하의 산지가 각각 화산대를 수반하고 이어지며 두 산지 사이에 고원·구릉이 넓게 펼쳐진다. 남서부는 기소 3강(木曽三川)이라 불리는 기소강(木曽川)·나가라강(長良川)·이비강(揖斐川) 유역의 충적평야로 와주(輪中)라고 불리는 저습지가 넓게 펼쳐진다. 특히 북쪽은 눈이 덮인 3,000 미터급의 고봉이 연이어 있는 모습이 유럽의 알프스산맥을 연상케 하여 일본 알프스 또는 기타(北)알프스라고 불릴 정도로 풍경이 아름답다. 그래서 인접한 나고야 지방에서 등산객들이 많이 찾는 등산 명소이지만 겨울에는 날씨가 매우 험악해지기도 한다. 최근에는 한국에도 이곳 북알프스 등산코스가 많이 알려져서 성수기 때 가 보면 한국에서 온 등산인들이 바글바글하다. 기후 현이 배경인 일본의 라이트노벨 고전부 시리즈의 에피소드에서도 이 곳에서 발생하는 등반사고가 소재로 쓰였다.

옛날에는 현의 남부는 미노(美濃), 북부는 히다(飛騨)라고 불렸다. 이 중 미노는 남쪽의 오와리와 함께 오다 노부나가의 본거지였던 곳이라서 전국시대 관련 매체에서 자주 등장한다. 오늘날의 명칭인 기후는 노부나가가 기산(岐山)과 공자의 고향인 곡부(曲阜)에서 한 자씩 따서 지은 이름이라고 알려져있다. 참고로 미노 일대는 일본 열도의 중심지인데다가, 현대토목기술이 적용되기 전까지는 간토에서 간사이로 병력을 이동할 수 있는 거의 유일한 육상통로가 위치한 지역이다. '세키가하라'라는 골짜기 분지가 그곳인데, 그래서 그런지 일본 역사에 큰 영향을 끼친 두 번의 전투가 이곳에서 벌어졌다. 서기 672년의 왕위 계승 내전인 '진신의 난(壬申の乱)'과 서기 1600년 일본 전국의 다이묘들이 두 패로 나뉘어 벌인 세키가하라 전투가 그것이다. 유리창 대신 썼던 질기고 반투명한 종이(트레이싱 페이퍼)를 흔히 미농지(美濃紙)라고 불렀는데 이 미노 지방의 특산물이었다. 일본도 제작 방식 중 하나인 미노덴(美濃伝)의 생산지이기도 하다. 또한 기후 현내의 역의 이름 중 '히다', '미노'가 포함된 역명이 꽤나 많다.[5]

호쿠리쿠의 도야마현, 후쿠이현, 이시카와현, 주부의 미에현, 아이치현, 간사이의 시가현, 고신에쓰의 나가노현 등 총 7개 현과 인접해 있다. 기후 현의 남쪽에 아이치현과 미에현이 있고 주로 이 지역에 인구가 밀집해있는 만큼 도카이 지방의 영향을 가장 많이 받았다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 현의 북쪽에 위치한 히다 지방은 호쿠리쿠 지방과 인접해 있기 때문에 오래 전부터 문화 면에서나 경제 면에서나 이 쪽 지방의 영향을 많이 받았다. 실제로 시라카와고와 마찬가지로 갓쇼즈쿠리 양식을 보존하고 있는 걸로 유명한 도야마현의 난토시 고카야마도 바로 기후의 히다 지방과 인접해 있는 마을이다.

섬유/재봉 산업으로 유명한 곳이기도 하다.

인접한 나고야시와의 교류가 많다. 카카미가하라시에 있는 오아시스 파크는 고속도로 휴게소와 테마파크의 결합으로 기후시와 나고야시의 사람들이 많이 찾는다.

호쿠리쿠, 고신에쓰처럼 지역을 구분할 경우 내륙 현이며 오기칠도에서 도산도임에도 도카이 지방으로 들어간다. 최남단 카이즈시에서 조금만 더 가면 바다지만 바다와 접한 부분은 미에현 쿠와나시에 속한다. 실제로 지금의 기후현은 내륙현이지만 과거에는 지금의 기후현에 속하는 지역에도 해안선이 있었다. 김해시와 비슷하게 키소 3강이라 불리는 키소가와, 나가라가와, 이비가와 하구에 삼각주가 형성되어 지금과 같은 내륙이 되었다. 원래는 세 강이 합류하여 대저도처럼 복잡한 삼각주를 이루었으나 메이지 시대 치수 사업으로 세 강의 물길이 분리되었다.

세계적인 기타 제조업체 타카미네의 본사가 위치해 있다.

젊은이들이 입사하고 싶어하는 기업 1위인 미라이 공업의 본사가 있는 곳이기도 하다.

한국의 충청북도와 공통점이 많은 편이다. 내륙현에 각 국의 인구중심점이 위치해 있고, 각 국의 중부권 중심지인 대전광역시와 나고야시의 주변 도시 중 가장 크고, 중심축보다 동해측(강원도, 호쿠리쿠)에 더 가까운 기후현의 히다 지방과 충청북도의 제천·단양권의 존재, 중심도시(청주시, 기후시)보다 주변 지역의 중심지(대전광역시, 나고야시)에서 더 가까운 기후현의 토노 지방과 충청북도의 옥천·영동 지역의 존재, 핌피로 세워진 역이라는 인식이 강한 고속철도역(오송역, 기후하시마역)이 있고, 각 국의 1번 국도(1번 국도, 일본 1번 국도)는 거의 안 지나지만 중심 고속도로(경부고속도로, 메이신고속도로)가 지나고, 기후시의 위성도시 인구를 합치면 청주시와 인구가 비슷하다.

나카츠가와시에는 벌의 에벌레로 만든 헤보고항이라는 밥 요리가 있는데 일본인들 사이에서도 호불호가 갈린다.

정치 성향으로는 중의원, 참의원 선거 모두 자민당이 우세한 곳이었다. 이 지역에 배정된 중의원 선거구들 모두 자민당이 우세하였다. 그나마 1구, 3구, 5구는 민주당 후보가 당선된 적은 있으나, 2구는 한번도 없다.[6] 4구는 2009년 선거에서도 민주당의 지역구 당선을 막았지만 2024년 선거에서는 정권 심판 여론에 힘입어 소선거구제 전환 이후 최초로 민주당계 후보가 지역구 당선되었다.

2021년 현지사 선거에서 55년만에 보수 분열 선거를 가졌다.#

2025년 참의원 선거에서는 오노 야스타다 의원의 자유민주당 정치자금 문제과 무소속 출마 강행으로 인해 입헌민주당, 국민민주당, 일본유신회 3당 단일후보로 나온 입헌민주당 신인 후보가 지역구를 탈환할 수 있다는 예측이 나왔지만 오노 야스타다 의원이 2025년 6월 21일 불출마를 선언하며 후보직에서 사퇴하였고 이로인해 정세조사상 자유민주당 신인 후보에게 입헌민주당 후보가 선거기간 내내 밀렸고 이를 반영하듯이 출구조사에서 자유민주당 후보의 당선 유력이 떴으며 실제 개표 결과 자유민주당 후보가 당선되었다. 다만 2022년 참의원 선거와는 달리 자유민주당 후보의 과반 득표율을 붕괴시킴으로써 야당 공투의 사정권까지 득표율을 끌어올렸다.

5. 문화

5.1. 향토 음식

기후현은 은어(鮎)로 특히 유명하다. 나가라강(長良川)에서 잡히는 은어는 '맛의 은어(味の鮎)'로 불리며, 여름철에는 아유 소금구이나 은어밥 등 다양한 요리로 즐겨 먹는다. 또한 전통적인 가마우지 낚시(鵜飼)가 관광 명소로 자리 잡고 있다.

이 외에도 다양한 향토 음식이 알려져 있다. 히다규(飛騨牛)는 일본 3대 와규 가운데 하나로 꼽히며[7], 다카야마 지역을 중심으로 스테이크, 스시, 샤부샤부 등으로 소비된다.
또한 닭고기를 된장이나 간장 양념에 재워 야채와 함께 볶아 먹는 케이쨩(鶏ちゃん), 호박나무 잎 위에 된장과 버섯, 고기 등을 올려 구워 먹는 호바미소(朴葉味噌), 쌀밥을 뭉쳐 꼬치에 꽂아 된장·호두 소스를 발라 구운 고헤이모치(五平餅), 그리고 산간지역에서 발달한 소바가 대표적인 향토 음식이다.

6. 기후(氣候)

미노 지역의 대부분은 낮은 산으로 둘러싸여 있어 연교차가 심해 여름은 덥고 겨울은 춥다. 예를 들어 타지미시는 종종 일본 내에서 최고 기온을 기록하며, 2007년 8월 16일에 40.9℃를 기록한 바 있다.[8] 그러나 2018년 8월 6일에 41℃를 기록했다. 여름은 내륙에 위치해있어서 열섬 현상 때문에 덥고 긴키 지방으로부터 이부키 산맥을 넘어오는 건조한 바람에 의해 푄 현상이 발생할 때 기온이 상승해 더욱 더워진다. 히다 지역은 미노 지역에 비해 고도가 높아서 대체적으로 더 춥고 혼슈 지역의 사람이 거주하는 곳 중에서는 가장 추운 곳으로 여겨진다. 그러나 기후, 미노 지역도 일본에서 알아주는 다설지이고, 히다 지역 중 시라카와고는 1년에 눈이 10미터 올 정도이다.
