• 타이틀 곡이며, 데이비드 보위의 곡 중 두 번째로 러닝타임이 긴 곡이다.
• 부자연스럽게 편집된 흔적이 곡 중간중간 있는데, iTunes가 대중음악 싱글의 길이를 10분으로 제한함에 따라 이를 맞추기 위해 부득이 줄여야 하는 부분이 있었다고. 토니 비스콘티는 싱글은 편집본을 쓰고 전체 버전을 음반에 실을 것을 제안했지만 보위가 싱글 버전과 앨범 버전의 음원이 다르길 원치 않았다고 한다. 따라서 뮤직비디오의 음원도 원곡 그대로.
• A-B-A 형식으로 파트가 나뉘는데 B에 해당하는 곡은 아예 다른 곡이었던 것을 엘름허스트, 비스콘티와의 논의 끝에 한 곡으로 합쳤다고 한다. 합치는 과정에서 조가 바뀌며 넘어가는 부분을 녹음했는데, 원테이크로 이 부분의 녹음이 완료되었다고...
• 밴드 리더이자 색소포니아로 참여한 도니 맥카즐린의 인터뷰에 의하면 이 곡의 의미에 대해 물었을 때 보위는 "IS에 관한 곡이에요." 라고 말했다 하나[9], 토니 비스콘티의 생각에 그건 가사의 초안이나 하나의 의미일 뿐 훨씬 다면적인 의미일 것이라고 생각한다고 밝혔다. 보위가 좋아하던 엘비스 프레슬리의 곡이나 영화의 여러 장면에서 이 블랙스타라는 개념이 나오며, 가사 자체는 고별 앨범의 가사 같다며 비스콘티가 놀리듯 걱정하기도 했다고.

5.5. Girl Loves Me

• 상술되었듯이 보위는 이 음반 작업 중 TPAB 앨범의 영향을 많이 받았다. 그것이 가장 극단적으로 나타난 트랙 중 하나.
• 중간 중간 알아들을 수 없는 단어는 시계태엽 오렌지의 인공어(나드섯)와 영국 게이/모드족/극예술가 사회의 은어(폴라리)를 섞어 놓은 것이다. 심지어 영국의 60년대 코크니 슬랭들도 이것저것 섞어 놔서, 분명히 영어 가사인데도 앨범 발매 당일부터 영어권에서조차 가사해석지가 돌아다닌 대단히 드문 곡이다. 일단 위키상에서는 일일이 모든 단어에 주석을 달 수 없어 가장 가까운 항목이 있는 한국어 단어로 번역된 어휘를 링크하는 것으로 뜻을 짐작할 수 있게 해두었다.

• 이 앨범 세션에서 유일하게 데모 없이 스튜디오에서 즉석 작곡된 곡(미공개 5곡을 포함하여 유일하다). 원래 데모상에선 2곡이던 Blackstar가 한 곡으로 합쳐지며 새로운 곡이 들어갈 자리가 생긴 것으로 보인다.
• 마지막의 앰프 들어간 드럼 루프는 I Can't Give Everything Away의 인트로로 기능하며, 곡들 간 유기성을 강화해주려는 톰 엘름허스트의 공헌이다.
• 앨범의 미스테리 분위기가 사라지고 급격히 직설적으로 우울해지기 시작하는 구간으로, 과거를 회상하며 지금 자신은 시도하는 만큼 낡아가고 죽어간다는 가사를 부르짖고, 이내 다음 트랙에서 다른 사람들에게 메시지를 남기기 시작한다. 마지막 두 트랙의 구성 때문에 보위의 사망 이전에도 (당시 그 어느 팬도 보위의 병을 몰랐으므로) 보위가 이 앨범을 끝으로 혹시 은퇴를 생각하는 것은 아니냐는 소수 의견이 있기는 했다.

• 사후, 앨범의 세 번째 싱글로 발매되었다. 뮤직비디오는 생전 촬영분이 없어 리릭 비디오와 애니메이션의 혼합으로 대체되었으며, 이 곡의 싱글 발매에는 보위의 유지가 반영되지 않았기에 싱글 컷이 정규반과 러닝타임이 다르다.
• 도입부의 하모니카 소리는 Low 앨범의 <A New Career in a New Town>으로부터 완전4도 이조된 형태의 연주이다.(C키->F키) 오마주로 추정.
• Dollar Days 마지막의 드럼 루프가 스네어를 치고 마감하며, 트랙이 바로 넘어가면서 똑같은 템포로 곡이 시작된다.
• 정확히 무엇을 의도했는지는 모르겠지만, 사후 자신의 암을 대중에 숨겨왔던 것과 딱딱 맞아떨어지는 가사이기 때문에 지금도 뮤직비디오 댓글에는 이 곡이 보위의 팬들을 위해 남겨둔 작별 편지였다며 슬퍼하는 글이 달린다.
