1. 개요

JTM45는 영국의 음향기기 제조사 및 브랜드인 마샬에서 1962년부터 생산중인 기타 앰프이다.

'플렉시(Plexi)'라는 애칭으로도 유명하며, 현재도 클래식 마샬 사운드를 상징하는 대표적인 기타 앰프 중 하나로 남아있다.[2]

2. 역사

최초의 마샬 앰프임을 의미하는 '넘버 원(Number One)'이라는 별칭으로도 잘 알려져 있으며, 현재 마샬 본사 박물관에 전시되고 있다.
1960년대 초, 영국 런던에서 악기점을 운영하고 있던 짐 마샬은 그의 악기점에 자주 들리던 기타리스트들로부터 영국에 수입되고 있던 미국제 펜더 앰프와는 차별화되는 다른 기타 앰프가 있었으면 좋겠다는 의견을 듣게 된다. 이에 고무된 짐 마샬은 본인이 공부했던 전자공학 지식을 활용하여 그들의 요구에 맞출만한 새로운 기타 앰프를 구상한다.

그는 앰프를 제대로 만들기 위해 전자공학 전문가였던 더들리 크레이븐(Dudley Craven)과 켄 브랜(Ken Bran) 등을 조수로 고용한 뒤 앰프의 설계를 시작한다. 당시 짐은 본인이 마음에 들어하였던 펜더의 베이스맨 앰프 회로[3]를 개조하는 것으로 앰프를 만들고자 했으며, 결과적으로 그들의 앰프는 베이스맨 회로를 기반으로 여러 부분들을 영국의 실정에 맞게 바꾸는 방식으로 만들어지게 된다. 당시 짐의 가게는 앰프를 개발하기엔 너무도 좁았기 때문에 실질적인 앰프의 설계 및 조립은 그의 조수였던 더들리 크레이븐의 집 작업장에서 이루어졌다.

우선 그들은 펜더 베이스맨의 초단관으로 사용되던 12AY7 진공관을 게인이 비교적 강한 ECC83(12AX7) 진공관으로 교체하였다. 당시 짐의 아들이었던 테리 마샬과 그의 친구는 피기백 버전[4]을, 켄 브랜과 짐 마샬은 콤보 버전으로 만들어야 한다는 의견을 내었으나, 막상 설계 조립을 담당하였던 더들리가 시제품을 피기백 사양과 유사하게 만들면서 헤드 부분만 존재하는 스택 앰프 타입으로 만들어버린다. 내부 회로에 사용된 다양한 부품들 또한 당시 영국 내에서 비교적 쉽게 구할 수 있는 Radiospares 등 브랜드의 제품들을 위주로 사용하였다.

그렇게 만들어진 그들의 첫 앰프에는 JTM45라는 이름이 붙었다. JTM45라는 제품명은 짐 마샬과 그의 아들인 테리 마샬을 의미하는 Jim and Terry Marshall의 이니셜에서 따왔으며, 뒤에 붙은 45라는 숫자는 앰프의 출력이라고 알려져 있다.[5]

JTM45는 출시 이후부터 영국 음악계에서 알음알음 입소문을 타고 많은 영국인 기타리스트들이 채용하면서 마샬이라는 브랜드의 규모를 크게 키워준다. 이후 슈퍼리드, 슈퍼베이스, 메이저같은 다른 마샬 후속기들이 차례로 등장하면서 오리지널 JTM45는 1966년에 단종된다.

단종으로부터 20여년이 더 흐른 1989년, 마샬은 JTM45같은 빈티지 마샬 플렉시 사운드의 수요가 제법 크게 존재함을 인지하고 JTM45를 리이슈한다. 이 리이슈 모델은 현재까지도 생산중이며, 마샬을 대표하는 앰프로서 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.

3. 상세

최초의 마샬 앰프이자 현재의 마샬 앰프의 브랜드 이미지를 형성하는 데 기여한 기념비적인 모델 중 하나로서, 첫 발매로부터 반백년이 넘게 흐른 현재까지도 수많은 기타리스트들 사이에서 명기로 칭송받고 있다.

플렉시(Plexi)라는 이름으로 잘 알려진, 마샬 특유의 금색 아크릴 패널(플렉시 글라스) 디자인이 가장 처음으로 적용된 모델로도 잘 알려져 있다. 본래 이 플렉시 패널은 JTM45 마크 1 시절에는 적용되지 않았으나, 마크 2 모델들에 일부 적용되기 시작하면서 마샬의 당대 거의 모든 모델들에 적용되었으며, 결정적으로 JTM45의 후계기로 출시된 슈퍼 리드, 슈퍼 베이스 모델에 적용되면서 마샬의 정체성 중 하나가 된다.

저 플렉시 글라스 디자인이 마샬을 상징하는 키워드가 된 탓에 몇몇 유저들은 JTM45를 포함하여 슈퍼 리드나 슈퍼 베이스 등[6] 빈티지 마샬 특유의 사운드를 아예 플렉시 사운드(Plexi Sound)라는 이름으로 묶어 부르기도 한다.

음색은 초창기 모델답게 근래에 마샬이 JCM, JVM 시리즈를 거쳐오며 정립한 신경질적인 고음이 강조되는 심하게 왜곡된 음색과는 약간 거리가 있으며, 그것보다는 조금 더 게인이 적게 먹으면서도 스무스하고, 특유의 크런치함이 있는 느낌이다. 그렇기에 현재의 마샬이 주는 이미지와는 여러모로 다르게 오버드라이브나 디스토션 페달이라도 들고 오는 게 아니라면 하드 록이나 메탈에 써먹기는 여러모로 맞지 않는 앰프이다.[7] 그래서 이 앰프는 주로 로큰롤이나 블루스 록을 연주하는 기타리스트들이 선호하는 모습을 보인다.

위의 역사 문단에서도 언급한 것처럼 펜더 트위드 베이스맨의 회로를 기반으로 설계되었기에 여러모로 닮은 부분들을 많이 찾아볼 수 있다. 당장 인풋 단자의 갯수(4개)나 이퀄라이저 노브의 구성(베이스, 미들, 트레블, 프레젠스)[8], 채널에 하나씩 배당된 볼륨노브만 봐도 아예 같은 제품이라 봐야 할 정도로 동일한데다, 구조상, 두 모델 전부 아래에 나올 채널 점프 기능으로 더욱 게인을 많이 먹여 사용이 가능하다는 점까지 동일하다. 다만 사용된 부품이나 프리앰프에 사용된 진공관의 스펙, 콤보/스택 앰프의 차이 등 다른 점도 제법 있기에 실제 동시에 놓고 비교해보면 완전히 똑같은 수준은 아니다. 3.1. 채널 점프

JTM45를 포함한 마샬 플렉시 앰프들, 그리고 3개 이상의 인풋 단자와 2개 이상의 채널을 지원하는 몇몇 다른 브랜드들의 앰프에서 사용할 수 있는 톤 메이킹 기법, 장비 운용법이다.

JTM45는 2개의 채널을 가진 듀얼 채널 앰프로, 전면부 패널에도 각 채널에 하나씩 할당된 볼륨 노브가 총 2개 있는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이 중 노말 채널은 비교적 중저음역대가 강조되는 멜로우하고 부드러운 소리를, 하이 트레블 채널은 찌르는 듯한 고음역대가 나는 날카로운 소리를 낼 수 있도록 설계되었다. 사용하고자 하는 채널을 선택할 때는 단순하게 마련되어 있는 4개의 인풋 단자[10]들 중 원하는 채널의 숫자가 적힌 쪽에 기타를 꽂아 사용하면 되는 식이었다.

그런데 몇몇 실험적인 기타리스트들이 JTM45을 만져보던 중 1번 단자와 2번 단자를 짧은 패치 케이블로 연결하면 1번 채널과 2번 채널의 신호를 노브 값에 따라 원하는 비율로 섞어 쓸 수 있음을 알아낸다. 이 방법을 사용하면 얼핏 지나치게 쏘는 듯한 하이 트레블 채널의 신호와 지나치게 먹먹한 듯한 노말 채널의 신호를 적당히 섞어 밸런스가 좋은 사운드를 뽑아낼 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 두 채널의 출력을 모두 가용하여 더욱 왜곡된 기타 사운드를 얻어낼 수도 있었다.

이 운용법은 당대 기타리스트들 중 알만한 사람들만 아는 정도의 기믹으로 남아있다가 에릭 클랩튼, 지미 헨드릭스 등이 앨범 레코딩과 라이브에서 이 기법을 활용한 기타 톤을 선보이면서 보편화된다. 이후 수많은 기타리스트들이 이들을 따라 JTM45를 포함한 마샬 앰프들을 채널 점핑하여 사용함으로서 기타 앰프 자체를 크랭크 업 하여 자연적인 왜곡(오버드라이브)을 얻어내는 방식의 새 장을 열었고, 마샬을 포함하여 뒤이어 나오게 되는 기타 앰프 제조사들이 더욱 강한 왜곡을 얻을 수 있는 앰프를 설계하도록 만드는 데 큰 영향을 준다.

4. 파생 모델

마샬의 가장 대표적인 앰프 중 하나인 덕에 수많은 파생 모델들이 존재한다. 대략적으로 추려보자면 아래와 같다.

4.1. Bluesbreaker

1964년에 개발된 마샬의 첫 콤보 앰프. 기본적인 구조나 조작부를 보면 영락 없이 JTM45에 트레몰로 회로 등 몇몇 부가 기능을 추가하여 콤보 앰프로 만들어놓은 모양새이다. 이 앰프의 시초는 짐 마샬이 1961년에 에릭 클랩튼에게 제작해주었던 4x10 스피커가 장착된 콤보 앰프였으며, 이것을 개량한 것이 지금의 블루스브레이커 앰프가 되었다. 블루스브레이커라는 명칭은 에릭 클랩튼이 당시 활동하던 존 메이올 앤 더 블루스브레이커스라는 밴드의 이름에서 따온 것으로, 상술한 에릭 클랩튼이 (활동했던 밴드의 이름 명에서 제품 명을 따온 것 처럼) 당연히 가장 유명한 사용자이며, 에릭 클랩튼 외에 피터 그린 등이 사용하기도 하였다.

당시 적당한 콤보 앰프를 찾아다니던 영국 기타리스트들이 비슷한 스펙과 출력의 펜더 베이스맨을 놔두고 이 블루스브레이커 앰프를 사용한 이유는 위 JTM45 문단에도 나온 것처럼 이 앰프의 당시 가격이 어마어마한 관세를 물고 들어와 비싼 가격을 자랑하였던 베이스맨 앰프의 절반 정도밖에 안되었기 때문이었다고 한다. 거기다가 두 앰프는 10인치 스피커 4개로 구성된 캐비넷 설계와 내부 회로와 부품 구성 또한 준 판박이 수준으로 비슷하였기에 실제로 내부 회로의 다른 부분들 몇 개만 교체해주면 블루스브레이커를 아예 껍데기만 다른 베이스맨 앰프로 개조할 수도 있었다.

마샬 최초의 콤보형 기타 앰프라는 점도 그렇고, 이 블루스브레이커 모델을 시작으로 이후 출시되는 마샬의 모든 제품에는 지금 사용되고 있는 그것과 같은 필기체 형태의 마샬 로고가 적용되기 시작하였다는 점에서 제법 큰 역사적인 의의가 있는 모델이다. 거기다가 아래에도 나올 마샬 블루스브레이커 오버드라이브 페달의 모태가 된 기타 앰프이기도 한데, 처음 개발된 목적이 이 앰프의 사운드를 페달형 이펙터 사이즈로 구현하는 것이었기 때문이다. 이렇게 만들어진 블루스브레이커 페달은 처음에는 워낙 안팔려서 단종까지 갔다가 이후 존 메이어를 위시한 기타리스트들에 의해 뒤늦게 발굴되어 현재도 가장 인기 많은 트랜스패런트 오버드라이브의 한 종류로 많은 사랑을 받고 있다.

블루스브레이커 앰프는 영국의 악기 유통사인 로즈 모리스와의 계약 과정에서 1962라는 모델 번호를 부여받기도 했다. 이 때문에 이후 생산되는 슈퍼리드 앰프가 1959라는 모델 번호 탓에 1959년에 처음 출시되었다는 오해를 사는 것과 마찬가지로, 이쪽도 1962년에 처음 생산된 것이 아니냐는 오해를 사기도 한다. 실제 생산은 위에서도 나오듯 1964년이 맞다.

4.2. JTM45/100

JTM45의 30와트 정도밖에 되지 않는 약한 출력이 불만이었던 더 후의 피트 타운젠드가 짐 마샬에게 더욱 강한 출력의 앰프를 만들어달라 부탁하면서 만들어진 개량 모델이다.[11] 이 모델은 계속해서 개량을 거듭하였으며, 이후 슈퍼 리드, 슈퍼 베이스 앰프의 개발로 이어진다.

슈퍼 리드 시리즈나 JCM 시리즈만큼은 아니나, 마샬 앰프 전체 시리즈 중엔 어느 정도의 수요가 있기에 여러 브랜드들에서 가상악기 플러그인을 만들고 있다. 대표적인 JTM45 기반 플러그인은 아래와 같다.
  • IK Multimedia Amplitube 5
    플러그인 내에서 선택할 수 있는 JH Gold 앰프가 JTM45/100을 기반으로 한다.
  • Positive Grid BIAS FX 2
    플러그인 내에서 선택할 수 있는 JM45는 JTM45의 클린 채널을, Plexi Lead는 JTM45의 하이 트레블 채널을, Overdriven JM45는 JTM45의 크랭크 업 사운드를 기반으로 한다.

  • 생산 당시 디자인이 제법 많이 바뀌었던 앰프이기도 하다. 아래 사진들을 보면 알 수 있듯, 초창기에는 패널이 지금 알려진 것처럼 중간에 있지 않고, 오른쪽으로 치우쳐진 형태였으며, 많은 사람들에게 익숙할 필기체 형태의 마샬 로고도 적용되지 않았었다. 지금과 같은 디자인이 적용된 것은 극후반기 생산분들부터이다.
