1. 개요

피카츄 모양의 치킨가스를 막대에 꽂아 튀긴 것.

포켓몬스터 열풍 시기에 등장한 음식으로, 2000년대~2010년대 초반에 주로 학교 앞 분식점에서 흔하게 판매하였다. 2010년대 중반 이후로는 판매처가 적어져 세대차이 음식이 되었으나 여전히 일부 분식점에선 판매하고 있으며, 2022년 포켓몬빵 열풍을 기점으로 다시 유행하였다.

현재는 분식점 이외에도 PC방 등지에서 판매하고 있다.

2. 맛

아무래도 닭고기 발골육에 빵가루를 입혀 튀긴 음식이라 냉동 돈까스와 거의 비슷한 맛이 나서 어린 아이들이나 학생들이 좋아한다. 식감은 팝콘치킨류나 치킨너겟과 비슷하다. 고기가 워낙 얇아서 꼬치에 끼우기 조금 힘들어서 그냥 안 꽂고 튀겨 파는 집도 있다.

소스는 주로 양념치킨맛 소스나 바베큐맛 소스를 발라 주는데, 이것 역시 지역차가 있다. 어떤 지역은 케첩과 머스타드 소스를 뿌리기도 한다. 떡볶이도 같이 파는 분식집은 떡볶이 소스를 발라주는 경우도 있다. 피카츄를 조각조각 잘라 떡볶이 소스에 버무려 주는 곳도 있다.

3. 특징

공장에서 모양을 내고 냉동되어 판매된다. 길거리 돈까스류가 대부분 공장제이므로 맛과 품질은 대부분 똑같다.

처음 나왔던 2000년대 초반만 해도 200~300원대의 가격이었지만 물가상승으로 가격이 지속적으로 올랐다. 현재는 물가가 너무 올라 분식집에서 한개당 가격이 2,000원 정도 한다. PC방에서는 2,500~3,000원 정도로 분식집보다 보통 가격이 조금 더 높다.

어디까지나 판매 가격이 많이 오른 것이지 납품 가격은 저렴하고 품질이 오른 것은 아니므로 여기에 들어가는 고기의 질은 기대하지 않는 것이 좋다. 무엇보다도 학교 앞이나 동네 분식점이 다 그렇듯, 기름을 언제 교체하는지 알 수 없어 위생 상태는 장담하지 못한다.

특히 여름에는 특히 조심해야 하는데, 분식집에서 장시간 밖에 나와있던 피카츄를 사먹고 식중독에 걸린 어린 학생들의 사례가 심심치 않게 보인다. 그러니 한여름에는 왠지 오랫동안 밖에 진열되어 있는 듯한 피카츄 돈가스는 주의해야한다.

지역에 따라서는 치코리타 혹은 꼬부기나 푸린 돈까스도 팔았다.

4. 성분

패티는 닭고기 기계발골육이 49% 함유되어 있으며, 대두단백이 섞여있다. 대두단백이 피돈 특유의 싸구려 맛을 내는 역할을 한다.
돈가스라고 부르고 있지만 재료로 닭고기를 사용하므로 정확히는 치킨가스이다. 분쇄 계육 [1]을 사용하며, 폐계를 닭발부터 머리까지 뼈째 갈아서 만든다는 이야기도 있다.[2] 기사

사실 폐계 고기라도 충실하게 넣어 주면 나은 것이다. kg당 5천원 아래에 유통되는 저가의 공장제 돈가스들은 분쇄 계육도 50% 수준이고, 대두단백이나 밀단백을 첨가 안 한 것을 찾기 어렵다. 물론 유해하거나 금지된 식재료는 절대 아니므로 불량식품 소리를 듣기에는 억울한 면이 있지만, 비용을 아끼기 위해 닭고기 대신 사용하는 것이 사실이며 대두단백을 사용하면 콩 특유의 향취가 강해서 맛이 떨어진다.

인터넷에서 직접 구매 시 판매자가 성분을 표기해주는데, 분쇄계육이 50%~80% 사이에서 제각각이므로 이왕이면 장당 몇십 원을 더 내고서라도 계육 비율이 높은 것을 사는 것이 좋다.

4.1. 비둘기 고기 루머

한 때 피카츄 돈까스를 공원에 있는 비둘기를 잡아다가 만든다는 도시전설이 돌았던 적이 있다. "닭꼬치의 재료는 비둘기이다", "학교 다닐 때 매점에서 파는 저렴한 햄버거의 패티는 닭 머리로 만든 고기다"같은 식의 먹거리 괴담이다.

현실은 비둘기를 잡아서 가공하는 것보다 그냥 냉동 닭고기 민스로 만드는게 훨씬 싸게 먹힌다. 고기의 맛은 먹이와 운동량에 좌우되는 경향이 큰데, 들짐승의 고기는 누린내가 많이 나고, 이를 숨기기 위해서는 향신료를 많이 사용해야 하기에 마진이 남지 않으며 오히려 적자가 나기 십상이다.

또한 실제로 고양이, 비둘기, 쥐를 잡아 꼬치로 만들어 팔았다면 당국 측에서 모를 수가 없다. 장사를 할 정도로 시중에서 잘 팔린다면 식약처에서 모를 수가 없다. 야생동물의 개체감소에 이상이 발생했으니 식약처 이전에 대한민국 환경부에서 알아차릴 것이다.

5. 상표권 문제

피카츄의 상표권과 저작권은 포켓몬 컴퍼니에 있으며, 이를 사용하려면 사용료를 지불하고 허락을 받아야 한다. 상표권 소송을 걸면 어마어마한 액수 때문에 납품업체는 파산할 거라는 루머도 있다.

이 때문에 납품업체에서는 해당 제품에 '피카츄' 명칭을 사용하지 않고 치킨까스, 치킨꼬치로 부른다, 1990년대까지만 해도 개개인이 직접 반죽해서 팔아온 것이 굳어져 유통업자 및 자영업자들은 여전히 피카츄 돈까스라는 명칭을 사용하고 있다. 이 때문에 예전부터 일본에선 '한국에서 피카츄를 무단으로 표절한 하급 돈까스를 판다' 라고 각종 비난을 하고 있으며, 5ch에서 한국을 까는 글에 올라오는 사진에 높은 확률로 피카츄 돈까스에 대해서 올라오고는 했다. 그래서, 농담조로 일본에서는 피카츄가 쥐를 모티브로 한 포켓몬이라서 쥐고기도 돈까스로 만들어서 먹는거냐는 반응도 있다.

이게 논란이 될 때 즈음에는 가격 인상과 맞물려서 크기가 조금 작은 발바닥 모양의 민스가스도 출시했었다. 하지만 시간이 지나고 피카츄 돈까스의 수요가 급감하자 잠잠해진 상태다. 포켓몬이 법적 대응을 하지 않거나 미루고 있는 이유에 대한 추정은 다음과 같다.

첫번째 추정은, 아무리 피카츄라 해도 피카츄의 실루엣만 가져와서 그럴싸하게 만들어 놓았고, 무엇보다 꼬리가 없는데다 만들어지는 반죽들을 보면 크게 뭉개져서 직접 설명해 주지 않으면 피카츄가 맞는지 아닌지 모를 정도라서 이를 법적 대응하긴 애매해서 미루고 있다는 점이다. 비유하자면, 하이에나를 보고 개를 닮았다고 하는 경우라고 보면 된다. 그게 아니면 "우린 피카츄라고 한 적이 없는데, 대중들 사이에서 피카츄라고 부른다." 라고 주장할 수 있다. 두번째 추정은 피카츄 돈까스를 만드는 업체가 한두 곳이 아니라 너무 많다는 점이다. 마지막으로, 한국에서는 돈 한푼 안 들이고 포켓몬스터로 광고효과가 되니까 그냥 눈감아 주었다는 설 등이 있다.

결국, 닌텐도에서도 현실적으로 여러 가지 요인이 겹친 탓에 쉽게 소송을 걸지 못하는 것이다. 분식집에 민찌까스를 납품하는 중소기업 규모의 두레식품에 상표권 소송을 걸어봤자 어차피 배상할 수 있을 능력도 없으므로 변호사 비용도 못 건질 확률이 높다. 그래서 소송의 실익이 없을뿐더러 닌텐도같은 세계구급 대기업이 그렇게 좀스러운 짓이나 해봤자 그냥 이미지만 날릴 뿐이다.[3]

사실 전세계에서 가장 유명한 IP인 포켓몬을 모르는 사람은 지구상에 거의 없기에 홍보효과는 없어서 돈까스로 인해 닌텐도가 크게 득이 될 것은 없지만, 분식집 돈까스가 무슨 야한 동인지처럼 포켓몬의 이미지를 망치는 물건은 아니기에 굳이 냅둬도 손해는 없다. 괜히 건드리면 소송 비용과 이미지만 날아가니 그냥 내버려두는 것이다.

6. 제조사

두레식품: 대부분의 피카츄 돈까스는 이곳에서 팔고있다. 치킨까스랑 치킨꼬치라는 이름으로 팔고 있는데, 치킨까스는 곰돌이 모양이고 치킨꼬치는 피카츄 모양이다.

7. 하림에서의 공식 출시

"띠부씰 열풍 잇는다"…하림, '피카츄 돈까스' 출시

피카츄 돈까스의 등장으로부터 20년 가까이 흐른 2022년에 들어서는 하림에서 실제로 포켓몬스터와 콜라보레이션을 통해 공식적으로 피카츄 돈까스를 2022년 7월 26일에 출시했다. 포켓몬빵처럼 스티커가 들어있으며, 아르세우스, 디아루가, 펄기아, 기라티나 등의 환상 및 전설의 포켓몬이 포함되었다.

기존 피카츄 돈까스와 달리 돼지고기도 함유되어 있으며, 꼬리까지 재현해 놓은 것이 특징.

8. 여담

밥반찬으로 간혹 먹는 경우가 있는데, 직접 구입할 경우 가격대도 저렴하고 맛도 괜찮아 먹을 만하다. 피코크의 한입 돈까스가 이것과 맛이 똑같다.

역전! 야매요리에서 타임인조선 패러디를 할 때 세종대왕에게 진상하는 음식으로 나오기도 했다. 이걸로 일본식 야매 돈가스 덮밥도 만들었다.

* 격투게임 전문 사이트 배틀페이지에서 만든 박지성 사진 중 하나로 이것을 들고 있는 합성짤이 매우 유명하다. 당연히 이것을 들고 있을 리는 없고, 원본은 질레트 면도기 광고 포스터였다. 그리고 박지성 본인도 이 합성짤방을 잘 알고 있는데, 2022년 침착맨 방송에 직접 출연해서 직접 재현해보았다.

GS25에서 곰돌이 치킨까스라는 이름으로 유사품을 판매한 적이 있다. 그런데 두께도 두껍고 닭고기 함량도 높다 보니 피카츄 돈까스 특유의 싸구려틱한 맛이 나지 않는다는 평가가 지배적이다. 결정적으로 해당 제품은 소스를 따로 바르는 방식이다 보니, 일반 분식점처럼 소스를 담가서 만드는 방식과는 달리, 소스의 감칠맛이 부족한 편이다.

2019년, 인터넷에 ""주문한 피카츄 돈가스에 알바생이 그림을 그려줬는데 그린라이트인가요?"라는 글이 올라와서 화제가 되기도 했다.#

해당 기사에서는 "특히 케첩으로 그려진 나비 넥타이와 단추 세 개는 아르바이트생이 얼마나 공을 들였는지 짐작할 수 있는 부분이었다."라고 평가하기도 했다.

[1] 분쇄 계육은 일반 닭으로도 만든다. 닭을 부분육(닭다리, 가슴살, 날개 등)으로 만들고 남은 부분도 살코기가 많으므로 분쇄육으로 만든다.[2] 사실 폐계는 육질이 질겨 요리시간이 길어지고, 이름 탓에 선호도가 낮아서 그렇지 식용으로는 아무 문제가 없는 닭이다. 오히려 적절히 조리하면 특유의 쫄깃한 식감을 가지게 되어 폐계를 선호하는 마니아도 있을 정도.[3] 애플이나 몬스터 에너지 등 그런 좀스러운 짓을 하는 기업도 있긴 하다.
