1. 개요

GBI는 미국이 개발 중인 미사일 방어 체계의 구성 요소 중 하나로, 적국의 탄도 미사일을 대기권 밖에서 요격하기 위해 개발되었다. SM-3와 함께 미사일 방어의 중간 단계를 담당하고 있으며, 여기서 놓친 탄도탄의 재돌입 단계 요격은 THAAD와 PAC-3가 맡게 된다.

3. 요격 방식

GBI는 이전 세대의 나이키 스파르탄 [4]과는 달리 핵탄두를 탑재하고 있지 않으며, 탑재한 요격체로 적 미사일을 직격하여 운동에너지만으로 파괴한다는 특징이 있다.


GBI의 요격체인 EKV

사일로에서 발사된 GBI는 지상으로부터 적 탄도탄의 위치 정보를 수신하고 이를 토대로 탑재된 센서를 작동, 적을 식별한다. 이후 최적의 시점에서 요격체(EKV)를 사출하고, 사출된 요격체는 장착된 적외선 센서로 적 탄두를 관측해가며 추격, 격파한다. GBI의 핵심인 EKV는 THAAD의 요격체(KKV)와 거의 같은 물건으로 요격 방식, 능력과 한계 역시 동일하다고 봐도 될 수준이다.[5]

4. 한계

THAAD와 마찬가지로 EKV에 탑재된 적외선 센서가 디코이와 탄두를 제대로 구별할 수 없다는 문제가 있으며, 이 외에도 러시아의 신형 탄도탄들은 궤도 변경 등 GBI의 추격을 뿌리칠 수 있는 수단을 갖추고 있다.

5. 구성

GBI는 크게 오비탈 사이언스의 3단계 고체연료 로켓 [6]과 레이시온의 외기권 요격체(EKV)의 두 부분으로 구성되어 있으며, 시스템 통합은 보잉이 맡았다.

사격통제체계는 콜로라도 스프링스의 미사일방어통합작전국(MDIOC)에서 주로 이뤄지며, 포트 그릴리를 통해 전달된다.

6. 운용

이동 배치가 가능한 다른 미사일 방어체계들과는 달리 GBI는 고정된 사일로에서만 운용된다. 미국 육군우주미사일방어사령부 산하 제100미사일방어여단에서 운용 중이다.

2013년에 알래스카의 포트 그릴리에 26기, 캘리포니아의 반덴버그에 4기가 배치되었으며, 2017년까지 14기가 추가 배치되어 총 44기가 운용될 계획이다. 먼저 배치된 30기 중 10기는 업그레이드된 EKV가 탑재될 예정이다. 폴란드와 체코에 배치될 계획도 있었으나 취소되었다.[7]

다중 요격체 등의 탄두 업그레이드 연구가 진행되고 있으나 성과는 감감무소식이다.

2017년 5월 31일 발사시험에서 모의 ICBM을 성공적으로 요격했다는 기사가 나왔다. 이는 GBI가 ICBM급 표적의 요격에 성공한 첫 사례다.

7. 창작물

7.1. 하우스 오브 다이너마이트

하우스 오브 다이너마이트, 리드 베이커 미 국방부장관, 명중 확률이 61%라는 보고를 듣고.

영화 하우스 오브 다이너마이트에서 정체불명의 적으로부터 미국으로 ICBM이 발사되고 이를 요격하기 위해 GBI 2발[8]이 발사된다. 그러나 한발은 1단 분리에 실패하고, 마지막 한발도 빗나갔다. 작중에서는 국방부 장관도 요격 확률을 정확히 못할 정도로 최고 기밀이었는데, 실제로 61% 수준의 요격 확률인게 들통나서 국방부 장관이 크게 분노한다. 이 확률을 알려준 제이크 배링턴 부 보좌관도 애초에 총알로 총알을 맞히는 일이었다고 말한다.

다만 이는 해당 영화의 의도 자체가 핵 위협을 강조하는데 있기 때문에 현실과는 차이가 나는 부분도 있으며, 미국 국방부는 영화의 이러한 묘사에 대해 "잘못된 가정에 근거(Based on false assumptions)했으며, 미사일 요격이 실패했다는 설정은 어디까지나 “오락성 차원에서 설정한 드라마 요소”라면서 현실 세계의 역량은 “완전히 다른 얘기”라고 강조했다.#[9]

ABM조약 체결 후 미국은 이 방식의 미사일 요격을 단념했지만, 같은 개념으로 만들어진 소련의 A-135는 아직도 가동 중이다.[5] 미 해군의 SM-3는 자세제어에 고체연료를 사용하는 등의 큰 차이가 있다.[6] 이 회사의 상업용 발사체인 타우러스 기반이다.[7] 이 중 폴란드는 루마니아와 함께 Aegis Ashore라는 SM-3의 지상발사형 시스템을 배치하기로 했다.[8] 2발만 발사된 이유는, 수량이 50발 밖에 없어서 나머지는 추가적인 미사일 공격이 있을 때 사용해야 하기 때문이다.[9] 실제로 GBI는 2발이 아니라 4발을 발사하며 이 경우 요격 성공 확률은 97%이고, 2014년 이후로는 시험 발사에서 실패한 적이 없다고 한다.[10] 당연히 일반 미사일에 비하면 비싸다. 총알이 비싸겠는가 총알을 운동에너지로 요격하는 총알이 비싸겠는가? 애초에 핵탄두 하나 가격이 ICBM 가격의 두세 배다.
