1. 개요

기쁨은 사물 안에 있지 않다. 그것은 우리 안에 있다.

기쁨 또는 쾌락은 기분 좋게 느껴지는 경험이며 무언가를 즐기는 것을 포함하는 감정이다. 기쁨은 행복이 슬픔과 대조되는 것 처럼 기분 나쁜 감정 형태인 고통이나 괴로움과는 대조된다. 기쁨은 가치, 욕구, 행동과 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 인간과 다른 의식을 가지고 있는 동물들은 기쁨(쾌락)을 즐겁고, 긍정적이며, 추구할 가치가 있는 것으로 인식한다.

식사와 성적 자극(sexual stimulation)을 통한 섹스의 즐거움, 음악 감상, 게임, 스포츠, 아름다운 일몰 감상, 지적으로 만족스러운 활동 참여 등 감각적 쾌락(sensory pleasures)에 해당하는 모든 유형의 긍정적이거나 즐거운 경험을 포함하는 매우 다양한 활동을 통해서 기쁜 감정(쾌락)을 경험할 수 있다. 이러한 기쁨은 황홀경(ecstasy), 행복감(euphoria), 몰입(flow)과 같은 다양한 심리 상태를 나타내는 것이기도 하다. 행복(happiness)과 안녕(well-being)은 기쁨(쾌락)과 밀접하게 관련되어 있지만 똑같은 것은 아니다.

기쁨이란 감정은 불쾌감의 형태 중 하나인 고통이나 괴로움과 대조되는데, 기쁨과 고통은 모두 정도(程度)를 가지고 있기 때문에 긍정적인 정도에서 중립 지점을 거쳐 부정적인 정도로 이어지는 1차원으로 여겨져 왔다. 이러한 가정은 서로 다른 경험들이 주는 기쁨의 정도를 비교하고 합산하는 것을 가능하게 만드는데, 예를 들자면 이런 가정은 공리주의를 제창한 제레미 벤담에 의해 고안된 쾌락계산법(felicific calculus)과 같은 공리주의적 계산을 수행하기 위해서 매우 중요한 요소이다.

2. 상세

쾌락은 기쁨이라는 순우리말과 같은 뜻임에도 한국의 문화에서 쾌락이란 한자어가 담고 있는 일시적이고 감각적인 만족에 중점을 둔다. 따라서 아직 유교의 엄격한 문화가 강하고 감정표현을 포함한 모든 절제를 중요한 덕목으로 삼는 한국 사회에서는 기쁨은 '건전하고 지속 가능한 정신적 만족'을 연상하는 반면에 쾌락은 '자극적이고 즉각적인 감각 충족'이나 '절제되지 않은 욕구의 분출'을 연상시킬 수 있기 때문에 이런 감정이나 표현에 대해서 경계해야 할 것이나 탐닉 또는 방탕의 의미로 연결하여 금기시 하는 경향이 있어서 두 단어를 명확히 구분하기도 한다. 특히 쾌락에 대해서 충동적이고 변태적으로 문란한 성적 행위나 팔에 주사기 꽂고 마약에 황홀해 하는 모습을 떠올리는 등 부정적인 의미로 오해하는 경우도 흔하다.

하지만 서양 문화와 철학에서 바라보는 시각은 긍정적이고 훨씬 더 넓고 포괄적인 가치의 요소로 다룬다는 점에서 분명한 차이가 있다. 서양 철학에서 쾌락주의(hedonism)는 쾌락을 본질적으로 선하고 가치 있는 유일한 것이기 때문에 도덕적 판단의 근거일 뿐만 아니라 마땅히 추구해야 할 가치로 다루어진다.[1] 영국의 철학자 존 스튜어트 밀은 쾌락의 질(質, quality)이란 개념으로 구분했는데 동물이 느끼는 낮은 쾌락(lower pleasure)보다 독서나 예술 감상과 같은 지성과 감정 그리고 상상력을 자극하는 높은 쾌락(higher pleasure)이 질적으로 더 높으며 삶의 지속적인 행복에 기여한다고 주장했다.

따라서 한국 문화에서 기쁨을 직접적으로 표출하거나 쾌락을 부정적으로 묘사하는 경우와 달리 쾌락은 일시적이고 충동적인 것이 아니라 인간의 삶에 중요한 장기적인 가치인 것이다.

인터넷이나 뉴스 기사에서 '기쁨을 느끼는 빈도와 강도가 10세 전후로 급감한다'는 주장도 있는데, 이런 현상은 아동기에서 청소년기로 넘어가면서 점차 복잡하고 다양한 감정을 경험하게 되면서 부정적인 정서를 더 자주 느끼는 경향일 뿐이다. 사람은 나이가 들면서 감정을 사회적으로 적절하게 조절하는 법을 배우기 때문에 유아기의 순수하고 폭발적인 기쁨의 표현 강도에 비해서 청소년기에 감소하는 것은 자연스러운 것이다. 청소년기 뿐만 아니라 성인이 되고 나이가 들면서 인생에 있어서 기쁨을 느끼는 빈도와 강도는 줄어들더라도 삶의 전반적인 만족도나 행복 수준은 나이가 들면서 오히려 더 안정적이거나 높아지는 경향을 보인다는 연구들도 많다.

기쁠을 나타낼 때 미소, 웃음, 환호, 환희 등 다양한 감정 표현이 있다. 일반적인 수준의 기쁨이 아닌 극도로 강한 기쁨을 느낄 때는 오히려 웃지 않고 찡그리는 경우도 있다. 기쁨이든 슬픔이든 극도로 강한 감정 상태가 되면 얼굴 근육이 수축하면서 찡그린 웃음처럼 웃음과 울음의 표정이 비슷해지거나, 아예 찡그림이나 눈물과 더불어 울음으로 터져 나오는 경우가 있다. 그래서 명문대 합격 후 우는 영상을 보면 긍정적인 성취와 안도감이 너무 강한 나머지 신체적 흥분 상태가 최고조에 달했을 때 울음과 같은 부정적인 정서 표현의 형태를 빌려 표출되는 것이다.

기쁨을 느끼는 것으로는 소원을 이루었을 때, 누군가에게 감사를 받을 때, 무언가를 이겼을 때, 월급을 받을 때, 반가울 때, 결혼을 할 때 등이 있다. 기쁨은 자기가 원하는 일을 해낼 때도 느낄 수 있지만 좋은 일이 우연히 닥쳤을 때도 느낄 수 있으며, 착한 일을 해서 만족감을 느낄때도, 본인이 그에 대한 상이나 보답을 받지 않더라도, 기쁨을 느낄 수 있다.

기쁨을 나타내는 한자로 喜(기쁠 희)자가 있으며 僖, 囍, 憘, 㜯, 歖, 媐, 㐂 등의 이체자 및 같은 뜻을 가진 한자가 존재한다. 맨 마지막자는 七(일곱 칠)이 3개가 있는데 잭팟과는 무관하다.

슬픔과 함께 끝말잇기에서 한방단어군에 포함되는 낱말이다. '기'로 끝나는 낱말은 많은데 '쁨'으로 시작하는 낱말은 없다.

중세 서유럽에서는 쾌락을 누리는 것을 죄악이라고 여겼고 쾌락이 허용되지 않는 문화가 있었다는 말이 있는데 그냥 낭설이다. 중세인들도 엄연히 사람이고 인간은 즐거움을 추구하기 마련이며 중세 교회는 흔히 생각하는 것보다 훨씬 더 유연한 조직이었다. 물론 중세 내내 금욕주의가 존재했던 것은 사실이지만 그들이 모든 헤게모니를 쥐고 금욕을 누구에게나 강요했던 것은 아니다. 반대로 의학적, 심리적, 도덕적 이유로 쾌락의 추구를 정당화하는 이론가들도 중세 내내 드물지 않았다.(Olson, 1986) 중세사학자들이 중세의 쾌락에 대한 연구를 집대성한 최근 저작에서도 중세 문화는 욕구와 도덕, 천상과 지상 간의 끊임없는 대화와 타협을 통해 이루어졌다. (Hanegby and Nagay, 2018) 그리고 중세 내내 지역별로 다양한 종류의 축제와 민중문화가 활발하게 꽃피웠는데 쾌락을 사회 전체가 죄악시하고 법으로 금지했다면 가능한 일이 아니다.

이와는 별개로 과도한 쾌락을 추구하는 것이 문제가 될 수 있는데 이건 그런 특수한 구조적인 조건 하에서 이뤄지는 게 아니라 어리석은 판단의 결과다.

미국에서는 '술이 모든 것을 망친다!'면서 금주법을 만들어 술을 금지시켰으나 오히려 술이 있을 때보다 더 무서운 세상이 도래하고 말았다. 조상 대대로 먹던 술을 못 먹게 하니 사람들이 이에 반발해 몰래 술을 사먹거나 직접 담가 먹는 상황이 벌어졌으며 이런 '위법' 행위들을 하다 보니 바늘도둑이 소도둑 된다고 시민들이 법을 어긴 경험을 갖게 되어 점차 법과 정부를 무시하는 풍토가 퍼지면서 사회가 한층 무질서해졌다. 이런 무질서한 사회에서 등장한 마피아는 직접 술을 수입하거나 만들어 팔면서 많은 이득을 남겨 그 돈으로 정치인들을 매수해 정치판을 자기 마음대로 좌지우지하게 되면서 손 쓸 도리가 없게 폭주했다. 오죽하면 금주법에 강하게 찬성했던 사람들도 '아 이건 좀 아닌 듯'하고 지지를 철회했으며 일부는 역으로 반 금주법 운동을 하기도 했고 이 법을 만든 공화당이 '그래도 우리가 만든 법인데 우리가 내치면 우리 위신이 뭐가 되나?'면서 이러지도 저러지도 못하고 있으니까 뿔이 난 기업들이 민주당[2]을 밀어주었고 그렇게 당선된 프랭클린 D. 루스벨트에 의해 결국 금주법이 폐지되고 나서야 지금의 안정된 사회로 돌아갔다.

대한민국에서도 '만화나 게임을 접하면 버릇이 없어진다'며 만화와 게임을 찍어눌렀으며 그 결과 한국의 만화와 게임은 퇴보되었고 한국의 만화, 게임 시장에서는 외국산 만화와 게임이 대부분을 차지했다.
