1. 개요

고려 초중기의 주요 도시 3경[1] 중 하나로 현재의 경북 경주시 일대를 이른다.

2. 역사

고려 시기 신라는 멸망했지만 그 과정에서 왕건은 신라의 구 세력을 그대로 포용했고[2], 옛 신라의 수도 금성은 동경으로 개칭되어 고려 초중기 동안에는 계속 중요한 도시로 남아있었다. 사실 수도 개경에도 황룡사 9층 목탑보다 높은 건물은 없었을 정도니[3] 고려시대에도 신라 때만큼은 아니더라도 개경에서 온 사람들이 감탄할 정도로 크고 화려한 도시를 유지했던 것으로 보인다.

경주가 개성의 동남쪽이라지만 동쪽보단 남쪽에 더 가까운데도 동경이라 이름 지은 이유에 대해, 주보돈 교수는 이미 신라 때부터 경주를 동경이라는 별칭으로 불렀기 때문에 고려에서도 그 이름을 그대로 사용한 것이라 주장하기도 했다.[4]

그러다 이후 무신집권기 신라부흥운동의 성격이 있었던 동경민란의 진압 이후 경주로 격하되어[5] 3경에서도 빠지고 '남경(서울)'이 추가되었고, 몽골 제국군의 침략으로 황룡사 목탑이 불타는 등 큰 피해를 입었다. 그러나 곧 동경으로 복권되어 원간섭기 이후의 외왕내제 체제가 붕괴되기 전까지 여전히 고려의 주요 도시로 기능했다.

다만 이러다보니 흔히들 고려 후기에 3경에서 동경이 빠지고 남경이 그 자리에 들어갔다는 식으로 아는 경우가 많은데, 실제로는 둘 다 떨어졌다. 고려사 지리지에 의하면 고려 후기 충렬왕 34년(1308년) 때 남경과 동시에 각각 계림부와 한양부로 격하되었다.

3. 여담

조선시대에도 최상급 행정기관인 5개 부(府) 중 하나였을 정도로 위상은 상당했고, 경상도의 여러 도시들과 더불어[6] 경상도 내에서 손꼽히는 잘 나가는 도시였다.[7] 일제강점기 초반에도 전국 도시들 중에서 최상위권에 위치할 정도로 위상은 여전하였으나, 시간이 지나면서 점점 부산, 대구가 경주를 역전하여 전국 대도시의 위상을 뺏겼다. 심지어 예전만 하더라도 경주 주변의 외항으로 경주에 장 보고 문화생활하러 오던 옆동네 포항, 울산한테도 밀리는 지방 소도시로 전락하게 되었다(...). 그나마 역사 유적들 많다고 재개발까지 제한된 지역이라 이후에도 이런 쪽으로나마 명성을 유지할 듯 싶다.[8]

개의 품종 중 하나인 동경이라는 이름은 여기서 유래했다.

조선 헌종 때인 1845년에 나온 경주지역 지리지 이름도 동경잡기(東京雜記)다.
