1. 개요

인켈(Inkel; INternational Korea ELectronics의 약자)은 대한민국 [12]의 가정용 음향기기 및 통신기기 제조업체로, 현재 명주파일 계열사이다.

1970년에 설립되었던 구 인켈을 해태전자가 1996년 인수합병했고, 그 후 해태전자가 2001년 '이트로닉스'로 사명을 변경했다가 2007년 다시 인지도 문제로 인켈로 사명을 변경하면서 옛 인켈의 연혁을 승계해 현재에 이른다.

주력 사업인 오디오 외에도 서브 브랜드로 나우정밀을 인수합병하면서 그로부터 따라온 전화기 사업부인 '바텔(Vatel)'이 있다.

2022년 기업회생절차가 개시되어 한국 천안 공장, 중국 동관, 베트남 하노이 공장을 모두 철수시켰고, 2024년에 셔우드 브랜드와 부평 본사까지 정리한 것이 확인되었다. 사실상 음향기기 업체로서의 인켈은 사라지고 ODM 브랜드로서의 인켈만 남았다고 봐도 좋을 듯.#

지역 인켈 서비스 센터는 개인 사업자로 데논, 마란츠, 야마하를 비롯한 거의 모든 음향기기업체들의 지역 서비스 센터를 겸하고 있으므로 서비스 걱정이 없는 것이 그나마 다행이다.

그 외에도 현재 인켈은 옛날 하이파이 만들던 버릇은 못 버리는지 도킹 스테이션과 블루투스 스피커 같은 소품도 디자인과 음질이 절륜한 것을 만들고 있으며, OEM 생산하는 디지털 LED TV와 디지털 피아노 등 다른 IT 분야와 냉장고 같은 가전으로도 사업을 하고 있다.

2.1. 오디오

인켈의 역사는 오디오 사업과 함께했다고 볼 수 있다.

1978년 경기도 인천시 부평공단에 이규재 창업주가 신방전자를 세웠으나, 1979년 해태그룹에 인수된 후 오디오 턴테이블 [13]을 생산해 각 전자회사에 납품하는 하청업체였고 이 분야에서 국내 1위의 업체였다.[14] 즉 '제과업체'라는 정체성에 만족하지 않고 첨단기술기업(?)으로 변모하고자 기존 신방전자를 발판삼아 전자, 전기분야로 진출하게 되는데 1986년 자체기술로 CDP를 개발한 뒤, 한국증권거래소에도 상장했다. 1988년 해태전자로 사명을 변경하고 1989년 화성공장을 준공했다.

인켈의 역사는 해태전자와 오디오 전문인 (구)인켈 두 갈래로 양분되어 있는데, 1994년 오디오 메이커 (구)인켈을 인수하며 시설을 인수하고, 부평공장의 생산 라인을 화성공장에 합치며 하나가 되었다. 이 때 인켈이 해태를 인수한 것이라고 착각한 사람들이 많았을 정도로 의외였다. 왜냐하면, 일단 인켈 브랜드가 그대로 살아 남았고, 오디오 전문 인켈이 1970년으로 설립년도가 빠르며, 오디오 시장에서 브랜드 파워는 인켈이 1위, 태광산업(에로이카), 롯데전자(롯데파이오니아/롯데매니아) 등이 2.3위를 하며 전문 업체로 선점하고 있었고 그 뒤를 삼성전자, 아남전자 등 가전을 겸하는 회사들이 따르는 정도였기 때문이다. 내실은 있었으나 OEM 비중이 높고 최고급기를 만들지 못했던 해태전자는 시중 인지도가 인켈에 한참 못 미쳤기 때문이다.[15]

이후 1996년 구 인켈과 나우정밀까지 합병하여 종합전자업체로 도약코자 했으며, 충청남도 천안시에 오디오 공장을 세웠다. 사명은 해태전자, 브랜드명은 가장 인지도가 높았던 인켈을 사용.

이 때 제과계 라이벌인 롯데는 1973년에 이미 오디오 업계에 뛰어들어 승승장구하고 있었다. 롯데알미늄는 일본 파이오니아와 기술제휴한 뒤 1990년까지만 해도 롯데 파이오니아라는 상표를 쓰다가 합작이 종료되면서 법인명을 롯데전자로 변경하여 롯데매니아(...정말로 이 상표로 TV 광고도 했었다)라는 상표로 바꿔 동원전자 인켈, 아남전자 테크닉스, 태광산업 에로이카와 더불어 4대 메이커를 형성하고 있었다.[16] 그러다가 오디오가 사양산업으로 접어들자 2000년 롯데알미늄에 사업부가 다시 넘어간 뒤 2003년에 철수했다. 이미 해태전자도 한동안 오디오 수출, 국내 메이커 OEM[17]을 하다가 1990년 'HTE' 브랜드로 내수생산을 개시해 1992년 '신포니아' 브랜드로 본격적인 도전을 했다.

여담이지만 사실 약간 늦게 현대전자도 비슷한 시도를 했다. 즉 자체기술로 개발한 CDP 하나 가지고 오디오 업계에 뛰어든 것이다. 당시 최고의 스타이던 서태지와 아이들을 광고모델로 내세워서 광고 융단폭격을 가했기 때문에 올드세대들 중에는 힙합버전 하여가가 쓰인 광고를 아직 기억하는 사람들도 있다. 해태처럼 다른 오디오 회사를 인수한 것은 아니지만, 플레이어 외의 다른 콤포넌트를 아남에게서 OEM으로 공급받았다. 현대전자는 그 뒤 반도체와 컴퓨터를 사업의 핵심으로 삼았지만 현대자동차에 장착하는 카오디오를 생산하면서 음향업계에도 계속 발을 걸쳐놓고 있었다.[18]

그러나 음향기기 소비시장의 변화와 1997년 외환위기가 터지며 한동안 암울한 시기를 보냈다. 무리한 확장을 지속했던 해태그룹이 모기업이라서 충격이 더 컸다. 2000년 운영법인명이 '이트로닉스'로 바뀌고 법정관리를 받았고, 2002년에는 상장까지 폐지됐음에도 계속해서 소량이나마 오디오 기기를 생산하고 있었다. 얼마 후 전자교탁, 내비게이션 사업에도 진출하였다.

그래도 이 시절 1994–1995년 인켈은 인켈 역사상 최고의 걸작 테마를 출시했다.# 뛰어난 설계와 어마어마한 물량 투입으로 인켈이 외국 최고급 오디오에 뒤지지 않는다는 평가까지 받게 되었으나 곧 IMF가 터진데다가 사회 변화(동영상 선호, 아파트의 보편화)로 고급 오디오 시장이 사라지며 망하게 되며 인켈에 큰 타격이 된다. 이는 인켈 뿐만이 아니라 태광에선 아너, 삼성의 엠퍼러, 아남의 tl과 델타 클래식까지 놀라운 기술발전을 보여줬으나 IMF로 모두 오디오를 포기하며 한국 브랜드 오디오는 사실상 사라진다.[19][20]

2004년에 LCD 모니터 제조사 이레전자산업이 인수를 시도하려다 무산됐고, 2006년 풍안방직[21] 컨소시엄에 인수되어 사명도 인켈로 변경한 후, 천안공장을 닫았다. 2016년 기준 자체 설계, 디자인의 블루투스 스피커나 하이엔드 MP3 플레이어, 내비게이션 시스템 등 몇 가지 제품을 꾸준히 내고 있었지만 한국 생산공장을 부평으로 통합하고[22] 베트남 공장에서 생산하고 있다. 오디오 전문이었다는 기질은 못 버려서 요즘 흔한 블루투스 스피커를 만들더라도 타사보다 음질에 매우 신경을 쓰기 때문에 들어 보면 다르다. #

다만, 소형 디지컬 음향기기 분야에서는 코원 등의 쟁쟁한 기업들이 선두를 차지한 데다가 주력인 오디오 분야도 세대가 교체되며 MP3 플레이어를 들고 다니기에 오디오를 찾는 사람이 많지 않아 예전만큼의 명성을 누리지는 못한다. 그렇다고 해서 MP3 플레이어를 만들지 않고 손 놓고 있진 않았다. 2002년에 출시한 인켈 오디오 카드는 절륜한 음질과 (그 당시 기준으로) 혁신적인 디자인 덕에 이 바닥에선 레전설이 된 물건이다. 단지 용량이 적고 전송속도가 느린데다가. 배터리까지 오래가지 않아서(스펙상 8시간) 그렇지...

사실 인켈의 주력상품이던 앰프, 튜너, 타이머, CD 플레이어, 턴테이블이 층층으로 쌓이고 큰 스피커가 좌우에 달린 가정용 컴포넌트 오디오 시장은 2010년대에 들어오면서 한국내 시장이 완전히 사라지고 온쿄나 야마하 등 일부 일본제를 통해 국내 수요가 충족되는 물건이 되었다.[23]전성기에는 카 오디오도 자체 셔우드 브랜드로 파는 동시에 미국과 유럽 고급 차량에 납품하던 Blaupunkt 등 유럽 유명 브랜드 제품을 OEM 공급하였고, 국내에서는 기아자동차 차량에 기본으로 들어갈 정도로 꽤 많이 팔리고 있었는데, IMF 이후 빠져나간 국내 연구 인력을 채용하여 급격히 발전한 중국 업체들의 저가 공세, 디지털화와 내비게이션 시스템 보급으로 인한 카 오디오 자체의 사양 산업화로 해태그룹 해체 시에 사업을 접었다. 카오디오 사업이 그나마 아직까지 팔리는 오디오 분야이고, 최근 자동차 전장 등으로 주목받음을 생각하면 아쉬운 일. 사실 기아차가 현대차에 인수되면서 기아와 거래가 끊긴 것도 카 오디오 부분을 접은 한 이유이다.

AV 사업본부는 베트남 공장에서 일본, 유럽 유수 하이파이 업체의 하청생산에 주력하고, 해외에서는 구 인켈의 미국 법인 상표이던 셔우드 브랜드로 하이파이, AV기기를 생산 판매한다. 2010년대 중반 들어서는 인켈 브랜드를 복원해 회사를 다시 만들어낸 거나 마찬가지인 과거 90년대 인켈 출신 연구진들이 나이가 들어 속속 정년 퇴임을 하는 시기가 되었다. 당시 연구소장은 이미 70대 나이이고, 당시에 대리 직급이던 연구원이 2015년 경에 정년이 되었다. 2022년 현재도 회사는 잘 살아 있지만, 원래 전문이던 홈 오디오 쪽은 AV 앰프 등 몇 가지 제품만 나오고 있고[24] 해당 시장 자체가 사라진 컴포넌트 오디오 세트는 안 만든다. 스피커 쪽은 구 인켈 집안에서 소유하고 있는 인터엠 쪽에서 좋은 제품이 나온다.[25] 다만 인터엠은 홈 오디오가 아니고 산업용(방송설비, 극장, 공연장...)인 PA(Public address)용이 대다수이다.

2.2. 게임기

1989년 '슈퍼콤'이라는 이름의 패미컴 호환기종 게임기를 발매했고(당연히 닌텐도 정식 라이센스 제품은 아니었고 대만산 패미클론 기종이었다. 그것도 대만 Aaronix사의 패미클론을 그대로 들여온 것. 당시 출시된 라이센스 제품은 현대 컴보이.), 이후에는 NEC와 기술제휴를 하면서 '슈퍼콤 바이스타'라는 이름으로 PC 엔진을 발매했다.[26]

2.3. 노트북 컴퓨터

1997년에는 Tube 105 라는 미니 노트북을 발매하기도 했는데, 일본 RIOS[27]의 Chandra 라는 기종을 OEM으로 수입한 제품으로 펜티엄 120MHz, 8MB램(최대 72MB까지 확장가능), 815MB 하드디스크의 스펙을 가지고도 1.24kg에 불과한 당시로써는 획기적인 물건이었다. # ~~이 제품 조상인 듯하다.~~

해태그룹이 부도난 후에도 이 제품은 작은 크기와 가벼운 무게의 미니노트북이지만 확장성이 올인원 노트북과 다름없는 데다가, 일반적인 캠코더 배터리를 쓸 수 있다는 이점 때문에 배터리 걱정도 없다보니 중고로 제법 거래되던 물건이었다.

2.4. 가라오케 기기

구 인켈이 해태그룹에 인수된 지 얼마 안 돼서, 업소용 노래반주기를 출시했는데, 엘프가 만들어서 인켈에 납품한 것이다. 인켈 노래왕이라고 해서, 엘프 소리꾼 SR-3000을 기반으로 내놓은 것이다.

2.5. 휴대폰

1995년에는 바텔(Vatel)이란 상표로 TV 광고를 하던 전화기 전문 제조업체 나우정밀(那宇精密)[28]을 인수하기도 했었다.[29]

(지금은 AKAI 등 이렇게 도산한 일본 하이엔드 오디오 브랜드를 '브랜드만' 해외 회사가 구입하여 중국산 초저가 오디오 제품에 붙여 파는 탓에 이들을 잘 아는 매니아들의 뒷목을 잡게 만들고 있다. 길거리에서나 파는 만원짜리 중국산 싸구려 라디오, PC스피커 등에 이런 브랜드가 붙는 지경이고 당연 요즘 사람들은 그 브랜드의 원래 명성 등은 전혀 모르는 상태다.)[21] 이 풍안방직이 과거 청보식품과 핀토스 구단을 운영하던 그 풍한방직과 직간접적 연관이 있는지는 불명.[22] 한한령 탓인지 중국공장도 철수하고 부평본사로 돌려버리거나 OEM으로 바꿨다.[23] 미친 듯이 비싼 유럽-미국제 하이엔드 오디오 시장은 그 전에도 있었는데, 수요는 그 때에나 지금이나 극소수다.[24] AV 리시버 R807을 제외하면 구 인켈 시설에 설계된 옛날 제품을 20년째 그대로 만들고 있는 것이다.[25] 시중에 인터엠과 똑같은 것이 인켈 상표를 븥이고 팔리고 있는데, 인터엠 것을 인켈 상표로 사입하기도 하는듯 하다.[26] 그런데 PC엔진은 8비트 게임기인데도 불구하고 슈퍼콤 바이스타는 겉포장에 16비트라고 적혀 있었다. 북미판의 명칭도 터보그래픽스 16이었으니 같은 꼼수를 쓴 것.[27] 일본 IBM과 리코의 공동출자로 만든 업체.[28] 1981년 설립. 무선전화기 시장에서 점유율을 높이고자 이미 다른 업체를 인수한 업체였는데, 이 때문에 자금난에 빠져 해태전자에 인수되었다.[29] 사실 비슷한 시기에 역시 오디오로 유명한 태광산업에서도 전화기를 생산하고 있었다.
