1. 개요

K55 자주곡사포는 미국의 M109A2 자주포를 한국에서 라이선스 생산한 155mm 자주포이다. 1985년부터 총 1,180문을 생산했다.

주한미군에서는 M109A2K라고도 부른다.[1]

K55 자주포는 405마력의 디트로이트 디젤의 8v71t 디젤 엔진을 탑재하고 장갑은 비교적 가벼운 알루미늄 합금을 사용했다. M109A1부터 장착되기 시작한 장포신 39구경장 M185 155mm 곡사포와 M109A2에 장착되기 시작한 M178 포가[2]를 장착했다. 화생방방호시스템을 추가하고 할론 소화기를 장착하는 등 10여 가지의 개선·개량 부분이 적용되었지만 연사속도, 최대 사거리 등의 전체적인 성능은 M109A2와 유사했다.#

K-55는 스페이드로 땅에 고정시킨 후에 방렬하고 포를 쏴야 한다. 이 과정이 길어서 초탄 발사시간이 2~11분이다. 운용 인원의 숙련도에 따라 속도가 크게 차이날뿐만 아니라, 자동인 K9이나 반자동인 A1에 비할 수는 없다. KH-179과 동일한 39구경장임에도 강장약인 KM-203을 사용할 수 없어서 최대사거리가 짧다. 이는 주퇴복좌기의 주퇴복좌거리의 차이 때문으로 설계상 KH-179의 주퇴거리가 K55에 비해 길어서 주퇴 시의 반동을 보다 손쉽게 흡수할 수 있는 탓이다.

방탄, 방편이 되고 자가 주행이 가능하다는 점 외에는 교범상 견인포와 차이가 없다. 방렬이 느린 점, 방렬 시 포수들이 외부로 나가야 한다는 점, 정화장치 없음, 설계의 한계로 인한 BB 탄 사용불가, 냉방장치가 없어 여름철 작전지속능력 하락, FDC와 통신을 유선으로 해야하는 등 여러 한계가 있어 PIP계획을 통해 K55A1으로 업그레이드 중이다.

사용탄은 고폭탄, 로켓추진고폭탄(RAP), 백린탄, 이중목적고폭탄, 조명탄, 지뢰살포탄 등이 있다. 사용 장약은 7호 장약과 8호 장약까지 사용할 수 있다. 모듈장약도 제한적으로 사용 가능하다. 궤도는 좌우 79+1 -1개의 고무 궤도패드로 구성된다. 기동륜, 보기륜 7개, 유동륜이다.

K55는 반자동 변속기를 사용해 조종이 어렵다. 수동차량 운전과 똑같아 차례로 변속해야 한다. 반자동 변속기 특성상 조종수가 기어를 변경하다가 기어가 빠지기도 한다. 심한 내리막길 이나 험한 곳은 조종수가 미리 사전지형답사를 하고 이미지 트레이닝을 하지 않으면 사고가 날 수도 있다. 전진 4단 후진 2단으로 구성되어 있는데 전진 1,2단과 후진 1단은 제자리 조향에 쓰이고 전진 3,4단 후진 2단이 이동에 쓰인다. 후진의 경우에는 주차할 때 공간이 협소해 선회반경이 되지 않을 때 제외하고는 대부분 2단을 사용한다. 변속기가 오른쪽 깊숙히 위치하기 때문에 주행 중 상체를 내 놓은 상태에서 맨눈으로 확인하기 힘들다. 조종수의 숙련도에 따라 변속에 큰 차이가 난다.

1단 기어에서도 핸들을 아주 약간 조향하게 되면 조금씩 조향방향으로 가게 되나 너무 많이 틀면 궤도가 잠기므로 다시 제자리 조향이 된다. 1단 기어에서의 미세한 방향 조정, 제자리 조향 등은 주로 포상에 정차하게 될 때 사용한다. 2단 기어는 저속에서 부드러운 조향을 해야할 때 주로 사용하고, 웬만한 작전 시 도심지나 민가 주변 도로를 통과하는 경우가 아니면 2단 주행으로도 충분히 가능하다. 3단 기어 부터는 부드러운 조향만 가능하고, 회전반경이 저단 기어에 비해서는 큰 편이다. 3단 기어 변속부터 엔진 소음이 확실하게 줄어든다. 4단 기어는 도심지의 도로를 통과할 때 주로 사용하는데, 포간거리가 많이 벌어진 경우에 간격을 좁히기 위해 사용하거나, 도심지 주변 교량을 통과할 때 일반 차량들과 같이 통과해야 하는데, 기존에 설계해놓은 하중이 넘어가면 안되므로 주로 4단 변속으로 빠르게 통과하는 경우가 있다. 후진 1단은 포상 정차, 또는 방렬을 해야 할 때 사용하며, 후진 2단의 경우 주로 정비 목적으로 빠르게 화포를 이동해야 할 때 사용한다. 후진은 사고방지를 위해 유도없이 조종수 임의대로 조종할 수 없게 규정되어 있다.

K55A1

2010년대 K-9 자주곡사포 및 최신 기술을 적용해 M109A6 팔라딘에 근접한 수준을 목표로 K55A1 자주곡사포 개량사업을 시작했다. 개량된 K55A1은 사거리가 32km로 늘어나고 반자동 급속 장전장치가 추가되어 방렬 속도는 기존 2분 ~ 11분 대비 45~75초 수준으로 대폭 단축됐다. 또한 K-9 자주곡사포가 K-10 탄약보급장갑차의 지원을 받는 것처럼 K-55 계열 자주포에도 급탄이 가능한 K-56 탄약보급장갑차가 생산되었다. K-9의 대당 가격이 약 40억 원에 비교해 K-55의 PIP는 대당 10억 원 이하로 알려졌다. 개량 사업은 한화에서 담당하며 매년 50~100문 정도씩 개량한다고 한다.

항법장치 추가
관성항법장치(INS)와 위성항법장치(GPS)를 장착하여 위치정보를 실시간으로 획득하고 FDC에 전송할 수 있다. 관성항법장치 사용 시 시간이 지나면서 생기는 오차를 GPS로 상호보정할 수 있어 사통장치가 K-9보다 정밀하다.#
전시사격통제기 도입
윈도우XP 기반 터치스크린 컴퓨터와 사격통제 프로그램을 이용해 사격절차를 전산으로 처리할 수 있다. 관성항법장치, 위성항법장치와 연동되어 화포의 위치, 포신의 방향을 실시간으로 표시해준다. 표적 좌표만 있으면 포반에서 자체적으로 제원을 산출해 사격임무를 수행할 수 있다.
주퇴복좌장치의 보강
완충장치를 2배로 늘리고 현수장치를 보강하면서 스페이드 설치 없이도 안정적으로 강장약 발사가 가능해졌고 이에 따라 최대 사거리가 32km로 늘어났다. K55는 옆으로 쏠 경우 화포가 심각하게 흔들렸으나, K55A1은 차체방렬 없이도 사격 안정성을 얻었다.
전동식 유압장치 개선
K-55에도 전동 유압장치는 장착되어있었으나, 방향틀을 든 측각수와 소통하여 수동방렬 하고 겨냥틀로 영점을 잡은 뒤 편각을 하달 받아 손바퀴를 수십여 바퀴 돌려 포신을 움직이는 과정이 필요했으며, 포신 옆에 달린 미세한 수포방울을 확인해야 해 유압장치를 사용하기 힘들었다. 하지만 K55A1 개량 후 전차에서 사용하는 포신 조정 레버가 장착되고 장착된 사격 제원을 받은 뒤에 곧바로 전시통제기와 제원표시기에서 디지털 제원을 직접 확인할 수 있게 되어, 전동 유압장치의 활용이 용이해지고 방렬 속도가 올라갔다.
반자동 급속장전장치 장착
K-55는 약실 내부까지 탄을 밀어주는 유압식 밀대를 사용하여 포탄을 밀어준 뒤에 장약을 넣고 폐쇄기를 닫고 사격하는 방식이었지만, K55A1 개량으로 유압식 밀대가 반자동 급속장전장치로 교체되어 탄체(포탄)를 올리고 작동만 시키면 약실까지 빠르게 발사되어 장약만 넣어주고 폐쇄기를 닫으면 사격 준비가 완료된다.
무선 통신 장치
K-55는 분과 간 의사소통을 위해 P96K 무전기로 대화하고 사격 시 K-77과의 통신을 위해 유선을 연결해야했으나, VRC-947K 무전기 세트를 장착하여 음성/데이터 통신 모두 무선으로 가능하게 되었다.
히터 장착
혹한 상황에서 급속장전기, 주퇴복좌장치 등 화포 부품들의 동결 시 생기는 문제를 해결하기 위해 히터가 추가되었다. 차체 엔진의 연료를 태워 승무원실 내부로 따뜻한 공기를 공급한다.[3]
보조 동력 장치(APU) 장착
전동식 유압장치, 전시기, 히터 추가로 인해 어마어마하게 늘어난 전력 소모를 버티기 위해 보조동력장치(소형발전기)가 추가되었다. 승무원실에서 조작해 쉽게 전력을 공급할 수 있다. 차체 연료를 절약하고 주엔진의 수명을 연장하는데 도움이 된다.
트랙 개선
기존의 사다리꼴 트랙에서 평평한 형태의 트랙으로 개량되었다
기타 개선점
K-9 자주포에도 적용된 집단 여과기를 장착했다. 포신잠금장치를 조종석에서 스위치로 조작할 수 있게 수동에서 전자동식으로 변경했다. K55의 스페이드는 좌우 뒤틀림이 잦아 스페이드가 고정되지 않는 상황이 자주 발생했었는데, 스페이드 접지면에 날을 덧대고 볼트로 고정해 닳거나 파손될 시 날 부분만 교체 할 수 있게 변경했다. K55는 포탑 후방에 바스켓이 있었지만, K55A1는 그 자리에 APU를 설치하고 바스켓은 포탑 전방으로 옮겼다.

K-55A1은 중량이 가벼운 편이라 7호 장약 이상으로 호수가 높아지면 약간 밀리는 현상이 있다. 최대장약 사격 시 화포가 흔들리면서 포신 방위각이 약간 틀어지지만 1~2밀 틀어지는 수준이라 전시기를 보고 전륜기로 살짝 조정해주면 되기 때문에 부대에 따라서는 스페이드를 활용한 사격과 훈련 모두 하는 경우도 있다.#

2018년부터 22사단, 27사단 등 일선 야전부대에 순차적으로 K55A1이 배치됐다.# 2022년 12월 전체 수량에 대한 개량 및 배치가 완료되었다.#

국방개혁 2.0이 완료된 2024년 시점에서 육군의 군단 직할 포병여단과 제7기동군단 소속 기계사단들의 포병여단에는 전량 K9(A1)이 배치되고, 나머지 상비사단 및 군단 직할 독립기갑여단은 K-55A1을 배치하되 사단의 일반지원포대 1개씩은 모두 K9(A1)을 운용한다. 화력 및 사거리가 매우 중요하고 재보급 및 지원이 어려운 서해5도 소속 해병대 부대의 포병들도 전량 K9(A1)을 운용한다.

5.1. K56 탄약보급장갑차

K-56 탄약보급장갑차

2008년 K-9 자주곡사포에 붙는 K-10 탄약보급장갑차처럼 K55 자주곡사포용 탄약운반 장갑차 개발이 계획됐다. 시제차가 개발돼 XK56이라는 제식명칭이 붙었다. 2010년 감사원에서 타당성이 없다는 지적을 받았다.# 2011년 전력소요검증위원회에서는 K56 사업의 취소를 주장했다.# 감사원은 소요 인원이나 비용을 과대하게 줄여서 평가한 부분을 지적했다. 2013년 7월 25일, 650억 예산으로 2015년까지 1차 양산이 결정됐다. 장갑 차량을 이용한 탄약 보급 장비의 필요성이 대두되었고 2015년부터 전방부대를 중심으로 배치 중이다.

K10 탄약보급장갑차와의 가장 큰 차이점은 탄 보급 방식이다. K9 자주포는 조그만 탄 삽입구에 탄을 이송하면 탄창 채우듯 자동으로 적치된다. 반면 K55A1 자주곡사포는 내부 탄 적치대가 여전히 자동화 되지 않아서 K56 보급차 운용병은 이송장치를 상하좌우로 움직여 빈 적치대를 하나씩 채워야 한다. K9 삽입구에도 호환되어 K56은 K55와 K9 모두 탄약을 보급할 수 있다.

K55의 차체를 이용해서 만들어진 삼성항공의 탄약운반장갑차다. 대우중공업의 K200 차체 기반 K255 탄약운반장갑차와 경쟁을 벌였다. K55와 직접 연결되어 탄을 공급하는 차량은 아니었고 단순히 장갑화된 탄약 운반 차량이었다. 삼성항공의 시제 차량 외관은 K77과 거의 똑같다. 사업 도중 성능 미달과 비리 의혹으로 취소됐다. #

레진 키트

디코퍼레이션이 2000년대에 이탈레리 M109A2 제품에 레진, 데칼을 추가하여 출시하였다. 지금은 찾아보기 어렵다.
2022년 하반기, 지지씨스케일팩토리에서 K55A1 컨버전 세트와 신형 궤도 세트를 발매했다.

9. 기타

한국 도입 당시 미국 다음으로 M109자주포를 가장 많이 운용하는 국가였고, 미국이 M109의 운용대수를 줄이면서 한국이 M109 계열의 최대 운용국이 되었다.

포병여단과 기갑여단, 상비사단 예하 포병대대에 전진 배치되어있다. 현재 기계화사단 예하부대 중 유일하게 수기사 포병여단 60포병대대만 K-55를 사용 중이였으나 전량 K-9 자주곡사포로 교체하였다. 이로써 제7기동군단의 모든 K-55가 사라진다.

K-55A1 주요 개량 중 반자동 급속 장전장치의 장착과 K-56 탄약보급장갑차 운용 체계 등의 일부 기술은 미국 M109A6 팔라딘에는 없었던 기능이다. 이후 미국 M109A7 개량에는 K-56 탄약보급장갑차 운용 체계와 비슷한 M992A3 탄약보급장갑차가 도입됐다.

[1] 본래 국군에서도 형식명칭을 KM109A2로 내정하고 있었지만, 공장의 기술진들 사이에서 줄여서 부르던 'K55'라는 이름이 방위산업청에도 정식으로 제안서가 올라가 제식명칭으로 자리잡았다고 한다. K는 국군 제식병기를 뜻하며 55는 155mm에서 따온 것이다.[2] 포신 및 사격 통제 기재 등을 장착하기 위한 화포 구조물이다.[3] 차체 연료를 정말 많이 잡아먹지만 이게 없으면 추운 겨울에 쇳덩이로 된 화포 안에서 버틸 수가 없다.
