1. 개요

영국 잉글랜드의 이스트 미들랜즈의 레스터셔주에 위치한 도시. 레스터셔의 주도로, 잉글랜드의 거의 정중앙에 위치한 지역이다.

잉글랜드에서 가장 오래된 도시 중 하나로 영국에서 11번째로 인구수가 많은 도시이다. 위성도시까지 다 합하면 84만 명 정도이다. 흥미로운 점은 중소도시인데도 이민자들이 많다는 것으로, 이 때문인지 실제로 2011년 영국 인구조사에 따르면, 잉글랜드 내에서 런던과 함께 유이하게 잉글랜드인(English) 정체성이 영국인(British) 정체성보다 약한 지역이다.[1]

도시명 중 가운데의 ice가 통째로 묵음이기 때문에 Leicester라고 쓰고 '레이세스터'가 아닌 '레스터'라고 읽는다. 영국식 영어로는 지명의 스펠링이 ~cester로 끝날 경우 ce와 바로 앞에 있는 글자 하나를 발음하지 않기 때문이다. 비슷한 예로는 우스터 소스, 우스터급 등으로 유명한 Worcester(우스터)와, Gloucester(글로스터) 등이 있다.

2. 역사

레스터는 최소 2천년 전으로 거슬러 올라가는 역사를 가진 영국에서 가장 오래된 도시이다. 하지만 본격적으로 발전한 것은 율리우스 카이사르가 영국을 점령하면서 이다. 이 시기에 소로우 강 동쪽 강둑에 정착촌이 세워졌다. 또한 서기 47년 레스터 일대에 로마인들이 몰려오면서 포럼과 목욕탕도 만들어 졌다. 하지만 로마가 영국에서 철수한 후 레스터 일대는 무주공산이었다. 하지만 색슨 족의 영국 침공 이후 레스터는 색슨족의 차지가 되었고 이들이 세운 머시아 왕국에 의해 관리되었다. 하지만 바이킹이 브리튼 섬을 침공한 후 레스터는 바이킹의 차지가 되었다. 그러나 잉글랜드 왕국이 안정화되자 레스터도 서서히 발전하기 시작했다. 특히 레스터와 랭커스터 백작들은 자신의 본거지나 다름없는 레스터를 발전시켰고 병원, 길드, 성당을 세웠다.

레스터는 15세기 중반 일어난 왕위 계승을 둘러싼 내전인 장미 전쟁의 주요 무대이기도 했다. 레스터는 요크 가문의 주요 지지 기반이었으며, 요크 가문의 일원이었던 리처드 3세가 사망한 보스워스 전투가 레스터 근처에서 일어났다. 잉글랜드 내전 때 레스터는 의회파를 지지했다. 그래서 1645년 영국의 국왕 찰스 1세와 라인공 루퍼트는 옥스퍼드 왕당파를 지원하기 위해 레스터를 공격했다. 왕당파는 10,000명이었고, 레스터의 의회파는 2,000명 밖에 없었다. 그래서 1645년 5월 31일 레스터는 왕당파에 의해 함락되었고 레스터 시민들은 학살당했다.

산업 혁명 시기 런던과 버밍엄을 연결하는 그랜드 유니언 운하가 건설되었고, 1832년 레스터에 기차가 개통되면서 레스터는 발전하기 시작했다. 레스터는 양말, 섬유, 신발 산업이 발전하였으며 도시 곳곳에 공장이 들어서게 되었다. 이로 인해 도시는 발전하였지만 빈부격차는 심해졌다. 그래서 1842년 노동자에 선거권을 달라는 극렬 차티스트 활동가의 폭동이 일어나기도 했다. 제1차 세계 대전 시기 레스터의 많은 공장들은 직물, 섬유 대신 무기를 생산하기 시작했다. 영국 최초로 곡사포 포탄을 생산하기도 했다. 하지만 제2차 세계 대전 이후 영국의 제조업이 쇠퇴하면서 경공업 공장이 문을 닫거나 해외로 이전하였다. 그러자 이곳에 살던 백인들은 도시를 하나 둘 떠나고 그 자리를 우간다, 소말리아, 인도 사람들이 차지했다. 그래서 2025년 현재 유색 인종 인구는 레스터 전체 인구의 59%를 차지하였다.

레스터 대성당(Leicester Cathedral) : 1086년에 지어지기 시작해 1867년에 완공된 영국 국교회 성당으로 리처드 3세의 무덤이 위치해있다.
헤이마켓 기념 시계탑(Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower) : 영국 최초의 로터리에 세워진 시계탑.
세인트 니콜라스 교회(St Nicholas Church) : 879년 이전에 세워진 것으로 추정되는 레스터에서 가장 오래된 교회로, 레스터 대학의 공식 교회이기도 하다.
레스터 길드홀(Leicester Guildhall) : 1390년 만들어진 길드홀로 한때 도시의 시청 역할을 하였다.
레스터 성(Leicester Castle) : 11세기 노르만 정복 시기 지어진 성으로 현재 일부만 남아있다.
리처드 3세 센터(Richard III Centre) : 리처드 3세의 일생과 발굴사에 대해 전시하는 박물관.

레스터 시는 스포츠 분야에서 성공적인 기록을 보유하고 있으며, 2016년에는 영국 최고의 스포츠 도시로 선정되었고, 2008년에는 유럽 스포츠 도시로 선정되었다.

6.1. 럭비

웰포드 로드에 위치한 럭비팀 레스터 타이거즈는 유럽에서 가장 성공한 럭비팀 중 하나로, 프로 럭비 유니언 대회인 프림 럭비에서 11회의 우승을 한 최다 우승팀이다. 럭비계의 챔피언스리그 격인 유러피언 럭비 챔피언스 컵에서도 2회의 우승을 달성한 명문팀이다.

6.2. 축구

본래 인지도가 높은 도시는 아니었으나 2015년에 이 지역을 연고지로 하는 레스터 시티 FC가 잉글리시 프리미어 리그에서 예상치 못한 돌풍으로 우승을 차지하면서 스포츠 팬들에게 인지도가 높아졌다. 2015년 3월까지만 해도 EPL 강등 1순위였으나, 리처드 3세의 장례식을 치른 후 4월부터 연승을 하면서 승점을 쌓아 기적적으로 잔류에 성공하고 다음 시즌에 우승을 차지했다.

락밴드인 카사비안이 여기 출신이다.

《비밀일기》의 배경이 되는 도시이기도 하다. 작중에서도 런던으로 수학여행 가는 등 지방 도시라는 점이 언급된다.

리처드 3세의 유골이 자그마치 사후 527년 만에 발견된 곳이기도 하다. 발견된 장소는 시의회 주차장 지하의 옛 성당 터다.# 2015년 3월 26일 장례식이 치러지고 리처드 3세의 후손인 베네딕트 컴버배치도 참여했다. 리처드 3세는 레스터 대성당에 안장되었다.
