5. 쪼개기 후원 논란

경북 포항시 북구 선거관리위원회는 6월 10일에 전 포항시의원 A씨와 가족이 국회의원에게 공천 대가로 후원금을 낸 의혹과 관련해 검찰에 수사를 의뢰했다고 밝혔다. 발표 내용에 따르면 A씨 아들, 남편, 사위는 2016년부터 2017년 사이에 5차례에 걸쳐 미래통합당 김정재 국회의원(포항 북구)에게 2,500만원의 후원금을 냈다.

아들은 2016년과 2017년에 500만원씩, 남편은 2017년 2차례에 걸쳐 1천만원, 사위는 2017년에 500만원을 냈다. 한 사람이 한 해에 특정 국회의원을 후원할 수 있는 금액은 500만원이다. 김 의원 후원회는 2017년 A씨 남편이 한도를 넘겨 낸 후원금 500만원을 그해에 돌려줬다.

올해 3월에는 A씨 남편과 사위가 2017년에 낸 후원금 1천만원도 돌려줬다. A씨는 2018년 지방선거에서 통합당 전신인 자유한국당 공천으로 시의원에 당선됐으나 선거사무장이 공직선거법 위반으로 유죄 판결을 받아 의원직을 잃었다. 이와 관련해 김 의원 측은 후원금과 공천에 아무런 관계가 없다고 밝혔다.

김 의원 측은 "2017년에 A씨 남편과 사위가 낸 후원금이 A씨 아들 계좌에서 이체된 것이라고 판단해 돌려줬다"며 "나중에 확인해보니 계좌 이체가 아니라 현금으로 납입한 것이어서 돌려줄 필요가 없는 것이었다"고 말했다. 또 "검찰의 공정한 수사를 통해 진실이 명백하게 밝혀지기를 바란다"며 "후원인의 진의가 왜곡되지 않기를 기대한다"고 덧붙였다.

선관위는 후원금과 관련한 의혹 고발에 따라 조사했으나 명확하게 불법 행위에 해당하는지 확인하지 못했다. 이에 검찰이 보강 수사해달라는 뜻에서 5월 27일 대구지검 포항지청에 수사를 의뢰했다. 포항지청 관계자는 "A씨의 정치자금법 위반 혐의에 대해 수사 의뢰를 받아 수사하고 있다"며 "구체적인 혐의 내용 등은 밝힐 수 없다"고 말했다. #

7. "이준석 혁신위 5명 지명" 허위사실 유포 논란

2022년 6월 27일, SBS 주영진의 뉴스브리핑에 출연해 '윤리위원회가 열리기 전까지 지금의 상황이 바뀔 것이라는 기대가 어렵지 않느냐'는 진행자의 질문에 "먼저 이준석 대표가 출범시킨 혁신위에 대해 한 마디 드리자면 혁신위원이 13명"이라며 "최고위원이 한 사람씩 추천하고 본인이 5명을 지명했다. '이준석 혁신위'라고 보면 된다"고 말했다. #

이에 대해 이준석 대표는 자신의 페이스북에 "오늘 SBS 방송에서 김정재 의원이 제가 혁신위에 5명을 지명했다는 허위사실을 얘기했다"며 "김 의원은 조속히 제가 지명한 5명이 누군지 밝히셔야 한다", "혁신위를 이렇게 지속적으로 조직적으로 흔드는 이유가 뭔지 궁금하다"며 맞받아쳤다. #

최재형 국민의힘 혁신위원회 위원장은 "확인되지 않은 사실이나 억측을 가지고 혁신위 활동에 방해가 될 수 있는 듯한 말씀을 하시는 건 혁신위 책임을 맡고 있는 저로선 용납하기 어렵다"고 의견을 밝혔다.

이후 하루 뒤인 28일 YTN에 출연하여 "제가 6월 14일 그 당시 뉴스에 보면 8명을 최고위원들이 추천을 하고 5명을 당대표가 추천을 한다라는 뉴스를 봤어요" 라고 해명하였으나 6월 10일~14일 날짜로 당대표가 5명을 추천한다라는 기사는 찾아볼 수 없었으며 그 시기 배현진 의원이 최고위원회의에서 혁신위는 이준석 사조직이라는 논란을 일으켰던 시기였다. 만약 그러한 것이 기사로 나왔다면 배현진 의원이 이러한 점을 놓치지 않았을 것이다. 이후 "발끈하신 것 같다. 정말 신기한 건 제가 방송 끝나자마자 바로 이 대표가 페이스북에 (반박 글을) 올렸다”는 것이라며 “(이 대표가 저를) 계속 보고 있는 것 같아 조심해야겠다”고 이 대표를 비꼬았다. #

이러한 허위발언 논란이 있고 하루 뒤인 28일 KBS에 출연하여 장성철 패널이 장제원 의원을 비판하니 장 의원이 방송국에 항의전화를 했다고 폭로한 건에 대하여 "제가 보니까. 그런데 장제원 의원께서 방송국에 전화를 했는지 아니면 개인 기자한테 전화했는지 정확하게 모르겠습니다만, 그래도 어찌 됐든 간에 패널도 어떤 사실에 입각해서 말씀을 하시는 게 저는 좋지 않을까 싶고요"라며(#1, #2) 자신도 정확하게 모르지만 패널이 사실에 입각해서 말을 하라고 하며 정작 본인이 불과 하루 전날 일으킨 논란에 대하여 정반대의 의견을 개진하였다.

8. 포항 태풍 피해 주민 조롱 현수막

2022년 태풍 힌남노로 인해 포항 지역에 사상 초유의 피해가 발생한 상황에서 포항 시내 곳곳에 '따뜻한 한가위 힘나는 민생경제'라고 적힌 현수막 50여개를 내걸어 크게 비판을 받았다. 피해 입은 주민들, 전통시장 상인, 철강공단 근로자들을 조롱하고 비웃는 듯한 문구였기 때문이다. 특히 포항 지역 다른 정치인들은 이러한 상황을 감안해 아무도 추석 인사 현수막을 걸지 않았는데 김정재 혼자만 걸면서 그야말로 안하무인이라는 비난이 쏟아졌다. #

9. 2023년 상반기 재보궐선거 결과 및 울산 유권자 폄하 발언

2023년 상반기 재보궐선거에서 울산은 울산광역시교육감과 남구 나 선거구의 남구의원 보궐선거가 진행되었는데 개표 결과 더불어민주당 최덕종 후보가 당선되어 보수 진영 입장에서는 자신들의 텃밭에서 패했다는 충격적인 결과가 나왔다. 이에 대해 반윤의 이준석, 천하람은 물론 강성 보수성향의 황교안마저 이대로면 2024년에 치러질 제22대 국회의원 선거도 보장할 수 없다며 자성을 호소했다. 그러나 김정재 의원은 골목 선거가지고 큰 의미를 둘 필요 없다며 해당 결과의 심각성을 전혀 눈치채지 못하고 오히려 울산을 골목이라며 폄하하기까지 했다. #[4]

이후 22대 총선에서 집권여당인 국민의힘이 108석이라는 처참한 의석수를 얻는 사상 최악의 참패를 당하여 김정재 의원의 골목 선거 발언 자체가 현실 판단이 전혀 되지 않는 망언이 되었다.[5]

10. 의료법 및 고등교육법 개정안 발의 논란

2024년 5월 30일, 의료법 개정안과 고등교육법 개정안을 대표발의했다. 현행법상으로는 의료인이 국가시험 자격을 얻으려면 한국의학교육평가원(이하 의평원)과 같은 평가인증기구로부터 해당 대학이 충분한 교육 여건을 갖췄는지 등을 인증받아야 하지만, 개정안은 기존의 '인증'에서 '예비인증'으로 국시 자격 조건을 확대한다고 명시했다. 그리고 평가·인증 실적이 없어도 일정한 기준을 충족한 경우 예비인증을 줄 수 있는 인정기관으로 지정할 수 있도록 법률상 근거를 마련했다.

그러나 해당 법안에 대해 일부 의사단체들은 의대 정원 대폭 증원으로 인한 부실한 의학교육 우려 때문에 국가시험 자격의 '기준'을 바꾸는 것이라는 의혹을 제기하며 반발하고 있다. 노환규 전 대한의사협회 회장은 자신의 SNS에 "의대 정원 확대를 밀어붙이고 있는 정부의 가장 큰 걱정거리는 한국의학교육평가원의 심사 문턱을 넘지 못하는 것"이라며 "그걸 또 피해 가려는 꼼수를 여당이 만들고 있다. 권력만능주의"라고 비판했다. #

11. 신장식 의원을 향한 욕설 의혹

조국혁신당의 신장식 의원이 2024년 12월 27일, 국회에서 한덕수 국무총리 탄핵소추안 의결이 진행되고 있는 당시 김정재 의원이 자신을 향해 "재수 없는 새X"라고 욕설을 했다고 주장했다. SNS를 통해 사과 요청을 했으나 답변이 오지 않았으며, 신 의원은 "사과하지 않을 시 증거 영상을 업로드하고, 국회법 제146조에 따라 징계를 요구하겠다"는 입장을 밝혔다.

2025년 5월 28일 경북 영천시에서 있었던 국민의힘 김문수 후보 지원 유세에서 더불어민주당 이재명 후보를 겨냥해 "여러분 대한민국 총알이 남아 돌아도 이재명이 쏠 총알 한 발도 아깝지 않느냐?"며 극단적인 조롱을 퍼부어 막말 논란을 일으켰다. # #

아울러 "그런데 이렇게 뻔뻔한 짓을 많이 해놓고 뭐가 무서워 가지고 옷 속에 방탄복 입고 댕기느냐?"며 "원래 방탄복은 눈에 안 보이게 입어야 하는데 누가 봐도 보일 수 있도록 방탄복 입고 쇼를 하고 있다. 지만 살라고 방탄유리, 지만 치고 있다"며 "지 옆에 국회의원들이야 맞아 죽든 말든 신경 안 쓰겠다는 것"이라고 폭언을 퍼부었다.

이에 더불어민주당 측에선 "아무리 상대 후보라지만 총알이 아깝다는 저주를 퍼붓다니 대한민국을 증오와 저주로 물들일 작정이냐?"고 질타하며 "더욱이 이재명 후보는 정치 테러로 목숨을 잃을 뻔했고, 지금도 테러의 위협을 받고 있다. 국민의힘과 김정재 의원은 대한민국을 폭력과 테러가 만연한 무법천지로 만들 셈인가? 증오와 저주는 12.3 내란의 뿌리다. 윤석열식 증오와 절멸의 정치가 국민의힘의 DNA인가?"라고 격렬하게 항의했다.

15. 경북 산불 관련 호남 화재 망언 논란

2025년 9월 26일 여야 합의로 경북 산불 특별법을 제정하는 과정에서 기권표가 나오자 임이자가 “기권표 뭐야, 누가 기권하랬어?”라고 반발했다.[6] 직후 어느 여성 의원이 “호남에는 불 안 나나?”라고 말한 뒤 웃는 소리가 들렸는데, 후에 김정재가 한 말로 밝혀졌다. #

송언석의 “제발 그렇게 되었으면 좋았을텐데”[7] 막말 이후 유사한 극언이 국민의힘에서 또 나옴으로써 말로 인한 비판에 또 다시 직면하게 되었다.

논란이 되자 김정재는 “호남에 불났으면 좋겠다는 말이 아니라, 불이 경북에만 나고 호남에는 안 나냐는 의도였다.”고 해명하였고, 이에 대해 사과하지는 않았다. 한겨레 기사에서는 사투리 억양으로 인해 오해가 생겼다는 주장을 내세웠다.#

더불어민주당 광주광역시당은 다음날 성명을 통해 "재난 피해를 조롱하는 발언은 국회의원 자격을 상실케 하는 망언"이라고 규정하며 국민의힘 지도부에 즉각 사과와 최고 수준의 징계를 요구했다.

같은 날 열린 민주당 확대간부회의에서도 정청래 최고위원은 "국민 앞에 공개적으로 사과해야 한다"고 했으며, 한준호 최고위원은 "차별적 발언의 책임을 져야 한다"고 밝혔다. 김병주 최고위원은 "제명 등 강력한 조치가 필요하다"고 강조했다. # 지역 정치권에서도 비판의 수위를 높였다. 민형배 의원은 페이스북에 "소름이 끼친다"며 "인륜 저버린 파렴치법과 다를바 없다, 화마로 삶의 터전 잃은 시민들을 희롱한 것"이라고 분노했고 강기정 광주시장 역시 "신속히 발언자를 찾아 일벌백계해야 한다"며 "썩은 사과를 솎아내지 않으면 사과 박스 전체를 버려야 한다"고 비판했다.

국민의힘 내부에서도 비판이 나왔다. 일부 인사들은 "협력이 필요한 법안 처리 과정에서 나온 부적절한 표현"이라며 발언의 파장을 우려했다. 지역 정치 관계자는 "이번 사건은 단순한 말실수가 아니라 정치 윤리 기준의 허점을 보여주는 사례"라며 "국회 윤리 규정 강화와 지역 사회와의 소통 확대가 필요하다"고 말했다. 이어 "정치권은 재난과 지역 감정을 정쟁의 수단으로 삼지 않고 국민 안전과 통합을 우선시하는 정치 문화를 확립해야 한다"고 덧붙였다.

[1] 잘못하면 무슬림인 유학생, 외국인 노동자과 같은 재한 외국인은 물론이고, 이슬람을 믿는 외국계 한국인들과 같은 자국민을 비하하는 의미로 해석될 수도 있다.[2] 꽃이 남성의 성기를 지칭하는 꼬X와 발음이 비슷해서 사용한 표현이냐는 말도 있다.[3] '자기위안', 스스로 위로하여 마음을 편하게 하다는 의미의 줄임말인 '자위'를 뜻한다.[4] 현재는 기사의 제목과 내용이 수정되어 해당 내용을 볼 수 없는 상태이다.[5] 그 참패의 원인 제공자였던 정작 당사자인 본인은 텃밭 지역구에서 정권심판론이고 뭐고 상관없이 60프로 넘는 득표율로 가볍게 당선되면서 무혈입성했다. 한마디로 비겁하게 양지에서 아무런 타격을 입지 않고 살아남은 셈이다.[6] 이에 대해 현재 국민의힘 내부 분열이 상당히 심각한 거 아니냐는 말도 나왔다. 국민의힘의 텃밭인 경북 지역에 대한 지원 법안이기에 국민의힘 쪽에서 기권표가 나올 가능성이 없는 법안임에도, 실제로 기권표가 나온 걸 보고는 무의식 중에 국민의힘 안에서 기권표가 나온 걸로 여긴 거 아니냐는 것이다. 참고로 저 기권표는 조국혁신당 등 일부 의원들이 “산림 난개발을 조장하는 독소 조항이 포함돼 있다”며 기권표를 행사한 것으로 밝혀졌다.[7] 정청래가 연설 도중 “노상원 수첩대로 되었으면 이재명 대통령도, 저 정청래도 이 세상 사람이 아니었을 것”이라고 말한데 대한 반응이다.
