1. 개요

대한민국의 고생물학자, 제2대 국가유산청장.

전남대학교 자연과학대학 지구환경과학부 지질학 교수, 전남대학교 한국공룡연구센터 소장으로 근무하고 있다. 주 연구분야는 생흔화석.[3]

2. 생애

1961년 [4] 1월 25일 전라남도 순천시에서 3남 1녀 중 셋째로 태어났다. 순천고등학교, 전남대학교 문리과대학 이학부 지질학과를 졸업하고 1986년 서울대학교 대학원에서 지질과학 석사 학위, 1991년 고려대학교 대학원에서 지질학 박사 학위를 취득했다. 박사과정 때는 신생대 개형충 화석을 연구했다.

다른 국내 고생물학자들이 그렇듯 국내의 공룡화석 발굴 뉴스 등을 보면 자주 나오는 인물이다. 대표적으로 2010년 후반에 코레아노사우루스 명명했을 때와 2011년 과학의 날 때 훈장을 받은 것이 있다. 과학동아 등에도 자주 글을 투고했었다.

2008년 한반도의 공룡 자문을 맡으면서 일반 대중들에게 이름을 알리기 시작했다.[5] 그러나 정작 제작진이 자문을 무시하였다. 이후 제작된 그 극장판에서도 다시 자문위원으로 초빙되지만 다시 씹혔다. 그리고 그 상황에서 개봉기념 이벤트에까지 초빙되었는데 제작진을 욕하기는커녕 극장판 및 감독이 극장판 개봉 이전에 쓴 소설 공룡전사 빈에 대해 호평하는 대인배적인 면모를 보여주어 관련 매니아 계층에게 재조명되기도 했다.

참고로 같은 해인 2008년에 Walking with... 시리즈의 설정집인 공룡 대백과: 고대 동물의 왕국 대탐험을 국내에 소개하는 데에 기여하기도 하였다. 자세한 내용은 문서 참조.[6]

2016년 11월에 국내 중생대 화석에 관한 대중과학서 '공룡의 나라 한반도'를 출간했다.

2017년 1월 24일에 전남대학교 부총장으로 임명되었다.

2025년 7월 국가유산청장으로 임명되었다.

2025년 10월 23일, 김해환경운동연합이 '동물의 권리를 옹호하는 변호사들'과 함께 경상남도 김해시 화포천습지 과학관 개관식에서 황새 1마리가 폐사한 사건에 관하여 홍태용 김해시장과 담당 공무원들, 허민 국가유산청장, 수의사·사육사 등을 고발하겠다고 밝혔다.

2025년 11월 7일, 대법원이 문화체육관광부가 서울시의회를 상대로 제기한 '문화재 보호 조례 제19조제5항' 개정 무효확인 소송에서 서울시의회의 편들 들어줌에 따라 세운4구역에 145미터 건축물의 건립이 가시화되자 최휘영 문화체육관광부 장관과 함께 종묘 경관에 영향을 주는 고층 건물의 건축을 좌시하지 않겠다는 기자회견을 했다. #
