당진 방면에서 덕산, 수덕사 방면으로, 대전 방면에서 당진시 합덕 방면으로 가려면 이 나들목을 이용하는 것이 편리하다. 실제로 수덕사와 가장 가까운 나들목이라서 나들목 이름도 원래 수덕사IC가 될 예정이었으나 지역주민들의 반대로 지금의 명칭이 되었다.#

수도권에서 내포신도시로 갈 경우 이 나들목을 이용하는 경우가 대부분이다. 이는 해미IC나 예산수덕사IC를 이용하면 주행거리도 늘어나고 통행료 가산에 시간적 손실까지 발생하기 때문. 40번 국도(구 622번 지방도)가 왕복 4차로로 확장되어 주행이 보다 편해졌다. 그러나 2024년 12월에 익산평택고속도로 부여~평택 구간이 개통하면서 예산JC-예산수덕사IC-602번 지방도(충남대로)를 경유하는 것이 최단경로가 됐다. 다만 익산평택고속도로가 민자도로라서 통행료는 조금 더 나온다.

3. 역사

2009년 5월 28일 : 서산영덕고속도로 당진JC ~ 유성JC 구간 개통과 함께 나들목으로 영업을 시작하였다.

[1] 서울특별시 강동구 고덕동 및 경기도 평택시 고덕면/고덕동(고덕국제신도시) 등과는 무관하다. 서울 고덕은 高德, 예산/평택 고덕은 古德으로 다르다(예산-평택 고덕은 한자는 같지만 역시 무관하다. 예산 고덕은 ‘옛 덕산’이란 뜻이고, 평택 고덕은 1914년 부군면 통폐합 때 ‘고’두면과 종‘덕’면을 통합하면서 한글자씩 딴 것이다). 아울러 세 지역에 모두 고속도로 나들목이 있는데, 본 항목의 고덕IC가 가장 먼저 개통됨에 따라 나머지 두 나들목은 각각 소재지 지자체 이름을 따 평택고덕IC, 강동고덕IC로 명명되었다.
