2016 뉘르부르크링 24시 내구 레이스에 i30 N에 탑재되는 2.0 터보 엔진 탑재 차량으로 출전하여 안정적으로 완주를 마쳤다.# 정의선 부회장이 이 차량을 직접 주행하며 서킷에서 250km/h까지 기록하기도 했다.
2016년 8월 30일 기준으로 i30 N 버전으로 추정되는 차량의 핸들링 테스트 영상이 공개되었다. 테스트 영상 중에 버튼을 누르는데 REV[2]라고 적혀있다.
2016년 9월, i30 N의 양산형 모델에 근접했다고 할 수 있는 서킷용 컨셉트카 RN30이 공개되었다.[3] 파워트레인은 380마력에 46Kgf.m 까지 튜닝된 2.0L 엔진과 습식 듀얼클러치 변속기 그리고 상시사륜구동으로 들어간다.
뉘르 24시에서 완주한 i30 N 프로토타입을 탑기어 코리아 시즌 7에서 리뷰하도록 차량만 지원했다.
2016년 10월 24일 새로운 동영상이 공개되었다. 과거 구형 i30의 외형으로 주행하던 차량대신 신형 i30으로 테스트한 차량이 등장하게 되었다. 해당 동영상은 풍동실험장에서 시험하는 것과 서킷에서 주행하는 모습이 나온다.
2016년 12월 말, 기본형과 고성능 2가지 모델로 나뉘어 출시될 것임이 밝혀졌다.# 알버트 비어만은 "만약 우리가 톱 클래스의 스포츠카를 내놓으면 얼마나 많은 소비자들이 웃돈을 주고 현대차를 살지를 고민해봐야 한다"라며 시장에서의 현실적 상황을 직시하고 있음을 밝혔고, 디자인과 성능을 극단적으로 밀어붙이기보다 얌전하면서도 고성능을 보여주는 방향을 추구하고 있다고 말했다.

2017년 5월, 새로운 동영상이 공개되었으며 실내 사진이 유출되었다.# 수동모델로 확인되었으며 계기판은 300km/h까지 표시되어 있다. 연료 가득 주유 시 계기판 주행 가능 거리가 300km 대이며 가혹하게 운행하고 있는 것으로 보인다.

2.0 세타 T-GDi 엔진을 장착했으며, M6GF2 6단 수동변속기가 달린다. 기본 모델은 250마력, 퍼포먼스 팩 모델은 275마력이라는 출력을 자랑하며 일시적으로 출력을 높여주는 오버부스트 기능[4]과 런치 컨트롤[5]도 있다. 이 밖에 전자식 차동 제한 장치(E-LSD), 전자 제어 서스펜션(ECS), 레브 매칭(Rev Matching), N 전용 고성능 타이어 적용 등 다양한 고성능 차 기술이 적용됐다. 또한 가변 배기 밸브 시스템(Variable exhaust valve system)을 사용해 주행 모드에 따라 배기음이 조절되도록 했다. 주행 모드는 N 모드와 N 커스텀 모드를 포함한 5가지의 주행 모드가 적용되어 일상 주행부터 레이스 트랙에서의 고성능 주행까지 가능하다.
0-100km/h 가속에는 기본 모델은 6.4초, 퍼포먼스 모델은 6.1초가 걸린다.[6][7] 스팅어 같은 퍼포먼스 세단이 아닌 핫해치임을 감안하면 준수한 성능이다. 스포티한 주행을 위해 전고가 4mm 낮아졌으며, 공기역학적 디자인 요소들이 들어갔다. 특히 극도로 드라이버를 중시한 세팅을 강조하며, 운전자가 차체 자세 제어장치를 끌 경우 몇 가지 안전장치가 계속 켜져있는 것이 아니라 아예 다 꺼진다.[8]

공개된 직후부터 여러 자동차 언론들의 호평을 받아내며 핫해치로서의 성능을 인정받았다. 평가는 대체로 "현대가 해냈다."라는 반응. 탑기어는 위와 같이 i30 N과 골프 GTI 중 i30 N을 고르겠다는 평을 내리기도 했다.[10] 현대에서는 i30 N의 디자인은 i30을 기반으로 하며 '기능을 따르는 디자인(Form follows function)' 원칙에 따라 저중심 설계로 스포티한 실루엣을 완성하고 안정감을 높였다고 한다. 일각에서는 혼다가 2017년형 시빅 타입 R을 우락부락한 디자인과 대왕 스포일러 같은 요소들로 떡칠한 것과 다르게 고성능 차 치고 얌전하고 단정하게 생긴 디자인을 칭찬하며 비교하는 반응들도 나왔다. 실제로 더 그랜드 투어 MC 제레미 클락슨과 리처드 해먼드는 시즌 2 내내 시빅 타입 R의 디자인을 괴상하다면서 까고 다녔다(...).[11] 참고로 i30 N을 테스트해 본 제레미 클락슨은 5점 만점에 무려 4점을 주며 이 차를 굉장히 호평했다. 가장 큰 단점으로는 르노보다 부족한 임팩트, 부품의 신뢰성,
하술되었듯이 유럽에서만 출시되었기에 전량 체코 공장에서 제작된다.[13] 현대자동차에서는 국내 역수입을 시도했는데, 결국 노조의 강한 반대에 의해 무산되었다고 한다.[14]

2018년 5월 뉘르부르크링에서 2018년형 i30 N 퍼포먼스 패키지(2.0 T, 280 PS) 버전으로 8분 20초를 기록하였다.[15]
과거에 미쓰비시가 WRC 드라이버 토미 마키넨을 위해 란에보 6 특별 한정판을 제작했듯이, 현대의 WRC 드라이버 티에리 누빌을 위한 특별 한정판이 제작되었다. 35대가 제작될 것으로 보이며, 1호차는 티에리 누빌 본인에게 협찬으로 제공될 것으로 보인다. 주요 차이점은 트렁크와 휀더에 '티에리 누빌 스페셜 에디션' 앰블럼이 부착되며 차량을 가로지르는 데칼, 내장재 곳곳에 티에리 누빌의 엠블럼이 붙는다. 기존의 i30 N과의 하드웨어의 차이점에 대해서는 아직 알려진 바가 없다.[16]

2018년 10월 파리 모터쇼에서 공개된 i30 패스트백의 N 버전 모델이다. 사양은 i30 N 퍼포먼스 모델과 동일하지만 기존 i30 N 대비 서스펜션 강성이 15% 증가했다. 그리고 i30와 동일하게 N 라인 모델이 존재하며, 한국 시장에는 출시하지 않았다. 이는 원본인 i30 패스트백이 내수 시장의 아반떼와 포지션이 겹치기 때문으로, 이 당시에는 내수시장에 이 모델을 대신할 차량이 없었으나 2021년에 아반떼 N이 내수시장에 출시되며 준중형 고성능 차량의 수요에 대응하게 되었다.

Touring Car Racing (이하 TCR)의 참가 목적으로 현대 모터스포트에서 출시한 차량이다.
일반도로 주행은 불가능하지만 구입에는 제한이 없어 개인도 마음만 먹으면 구입할 수 있다. 판매가는 기본 옵션으로 약 128,000유로로 우리 돈 1.7억 정도에 매우높은 가격이지만 레이싱 차량인걸 생각하고 사후관리와 부품수급[17]를 고려하면 생각보다 합리적인 가격이다.
2017년 상반기까지 뉘르부르크링 내구레이스 참가 등 조정을 거친 후 2017년 10월 8일 중국 저장성에서 열린 Q1섹션 TCR에 첫 참가, 17라운드 1위/12위, 18라운드 4위/6위의 좋은 성적을 기록했다. 다음해 챔피언십을 기대하게 했다.
2017 시즌의 게스트 참가 성적을 보고 WTCC의 제왕으로 평가받던 이반 뮐러가 현대 모터스포트에 직접 요청하여 i30 N TCR을 받아갈 정도로 그 가능성을 인정받았으며, 개발부터 테스트 단계까지 본인의 노력을 쏟아부은 노장 가브리엘 타퀴니 역시 WTCR에 참가하면서 i30 N TCR로 참가하게 되었다. WTCC부터 쭈욱 참가해 온 혼다, 폭스바겐, 쿠프라, 아우디 등의 메이커와 직접 경쟁하게 되면서 어디까지 성적을 낼 수 있느냐가 관건이 되었다.
첫 공식 출전인 FIA WTCR 2018 모로코 경기 에서 1라운드 1, 2위, 3라운드 1, 2, 3위로 포디움을 휩쓸어 팀별 종합순위 1, 2위를 차지했다. WTCR 2018 두번째 경기인 헝기리 경기에서 1라운드 3위를 차지하고 2라운드 2, 3위, 3라운드 1, 2, 3위로 다시 한번 포디움을 휩쓸었다. 팀별 종합순위는 여전히 1, 2위. 출전한 5대(와일드카드 포함) 차량의 드라이버가 모두 10권 안에 위치하는등 드라이버를 가리지 않는 성능을 보여 처음 출전하는 투어링카 레이스에서 시즌 초반이지만 매우 고무적인 성과를 보이고 있다. 결국 2018시즌 최종전에서 가브리엘 타퀴니가 선두를 수성하는 데 성공하면서 드라이버 챔피언쉽 우승은 가브리엘 타퀴니[18]가, 팀 우승 역시 i30 N TCR을 타는 이반 뮐러의 M레이싱[19]이 차지하면서 투어링카 참가 첫 해이자 WTCR 참가 첫 해에 i30 N TCR로 드라이버와 팀 모두 재패하는 데 성공했다.
국내에는 KMSA와 쏠라이트 인디고 레이싱이 갖고 있으며, 2021년 슈퍼레이스 개막 라운드 금호 GT1 클래스에 KMSA의 차량이 출전해 모두를 놀라게 했다. 2021년 뉘르부르크링 24시 당시 i30 N의 실시간 온보드 스트림에 접속했던 최정원 대표에 의하면 제네시스 쿠페 중심인 국내 모터스포츠 판을 한 번 흔들고 싶었다고 하면서 참가시켰다고 한다.[20]

최초의 N인만큼 페이스리프트도 가장 먼저 진행되었다. 다만 이는 i30 N만을 위한게 아니라 i30 PD 전체가 페이스리프트되면서 거기에 맞춘 일괄변경이다. 기반이 되는 PD가 2016년 출시한 차량이기 때문. 이와 동시에 2022년에 i30 일반모델이 풀체인지되는데 여기에 맞춰서 최초의 2세대 N차량이 나올지 일반형과 별개의 주기로 수명을 가져갈지 추측이 난무하는 상황이다.[24][25]
전기형과 차이점은 출력을 275마력에서 280마력으로 올렸고. 서스펜션 및 스티어링 시스템을 새롭게 튜닝했고, 퍼포먼스 패키지의 프론트 브레이크 디스크 크기를 345mm에서 360mm로 늘렸다. 그리고 경량 시트와 알로이 휠을 장착했다.
2021년 12월 8일 뉘르부르크링에서 2022년형 i30 N 퍼포먼스 패키지(2.0 T, 280 PS) 버전으로 8분 5초 19를 기록하였다.[26] 더 성능이 좋은 타이어가 적용되었기 때문인지 초기형 퍼포먼스 패키지보다 15초 정도 더 빨라졌고 폭스바겐 골프/7세대 최후기형 GTI TCR보다는 0.3초 정도만 더 느리다.

2024년 7월 18일 호주 시장에서 2025년형 2차 페이스리프트 모델이 공개되어 i30 N의 계보는 계속 이어질 예정이다.

[1] 세타 엔진과 그 파생 엔진들은 제네시스 쿠페나 미쓰비시 랜서 에볼루션 등에 탑재된 바 있다.[2] 레브 매칭이라 하여 저단기어로 변속시 ECU에서 엔진회전수를 높여 기어와 부드럽게 물리도록 하는기능[3] 어디까지나 i30 N과는 별개의 모델이다.[4] 진짜 부스터 같은 물건은 아니고, 원래 세팅값만 살짝 바꿔주는 시스템일 뿐이다. 마력은 6~7%, 토크는 8%가량 증가한다고 한다.[5] 차체 자세 제어장치를 끄고 스포츠 모드로 세팅한 다음 기어를 1단으로 놓은 상태에서 클러치와 악셀을 밟다가 클러치를 떼면 된다.[6] 폭스바겐 골프 GTI는 6.2초, 포드 포커스 ST는 6.5초 가량. 혼다 시빅 타입 R 같은 경우에는 316마력으로 약 5.7초를 찍는다. 다만, 골프 R이나 포커스 RS 등은 공식적으로 5초 이하의 기록을 가지고 있다. 그러나 포커스 RS는 경쟁차량들보다 더 큰 2.3L 엔진을 때려넣었고 출력이 350마력으로 훨씬 더 높으므로 단순 비교를 하기가 힘들다. 골프 R 역시 300마력에 사륜구동이므로 비교하기는 어렵다. 참고로 여기서 언급되지 않았으면서 가장 i30 N과 비슷한 차량이 있는데, 바로 르노 메간 RS 트로피다. 250 & 275HP 스펙이 i30 N과 굉장히 비슷하다. 또한, 가격이 상당히 비싸긴 하지만 400마력 5기통 엔진을 때려박고 4.1초대 끊어주는 아우디 RS3가 있다. 참고로 RS3의 밑 급인 S3는 골프 R과 완전히 엔진과 구동계가 동일하다.[7] 이 차량과 비슷한 성능을 가진 차량으로 쏘나타 N Line이 있다.[8] i30 N이 가장 호평받던 부분이었다. 많이 보수적이던 운영진이 드디어 소비자들이 무엇을 원하는지 듣는다는 일종의 변환점을 보여준 대표적인 예시. 다만 한국에서 TC를 완전히 끄는건 도로교통법상 불법이라 꺼졌다고 안내는 뜨지만 완전히 꺼지지는 않는다.[9] 둘이 비교해봐도 i30 N쪽이 골프 GTI보다 성능이 좋다. 애당초 성능으로 두고 따지면 한체급 위인 골프 R을 비교대상으로 가지고 와야하며, GTI는 N 라인과 비교해야 한다. 물론 N 라인과 비슷한 스펙이었던 프로씨드 GT가 골프 GTI보다 약간 밀리고, 골프 GTI는 R 때문에 출력 상승이 소극적일 뿐 엄연히 2L 엔진에 더 비싸다.[10] 골프의 경우 R은 N보다 출력도 한 체급 높고 그만큼 더 비싸며, GTI의 경우 N보다는 약간 저렴하지만 중간급 퍼포먼스 모델인 만큼 N만큼의 재미를 제공하지 않는다. N 라인보다는 성능이 약간 더 낫지만, 그만큼 비싸고 배기량도 높다.[11] 사실 탑기어 시절에도 이런 일화가 있었다. 자세한 내용은 현대 투스카니, 토요타 소어러 문서 참조.[12] 항상 한국 자동차를 호평할 때 단점으로 언급했던 것이다. 프로씨드 GT를 호평할 때도 김정은 때문에 AS가 끊길 우려가 있다고 드립을 쳤다,[13] 현대자동차 단체 협약 때문에 역수입이 거의 불가능하다.[14] 현대자동차 노조에 대한 인식과 별개로 근거 없는 반대는 아니다. 애초에 같은 차급인 벨로스터 N의 팀킬도 있거니와 해외 생산 차량의 수입은 국내 공장 직원의 고용 불안을 일으키고 부품 공급 업체의 안정된 판매 물량 확보를 어렵게 만드는 중요한 요소이므로 노사 간에 상호 "합의"하도록 단체 협약에 명시되어 있는 사항이다. 이게 회사 측이 일방적으로 할 수 있는 것이라면 파업이 아무런 압박 수단이 되지 못하므로 노동조합이 전면 무력화된다. 즉, 역수입은 노동법 및 단체 협약 위반인 것이다. 물론 국내 생산라인에 영향을 미치지 않을 정도로 100대 정도의 극소량만 수입해 판매한다면 노조에서도 반대하지 않겠지만, 그러면 아무리 수요가 없는 고성능 해치백이라도 100대로는 국내 수요를 따라가지 못할 가능성이 높으니 굳이 이만큼만 들일 필요가 없다.[15] 드라이버는 크리스티안 게브하르트, 사용된 타이어는 피렐리 P 제로.[16] 굳이 비밀로 했다기보다, 이런 차량은 울산이나 전주, 아산 공장이 아니라 화성시 남양연구소 내에 있는 시작 차량(prototype) 전용 생산 라인에서 거의 수작업으로 만들기 때문이다. 연구소 전체가 보안 구역이라 같은 현대자동차 직원도, 연구소 직원도 구역에 따라서는 별도의 허가 없이 들어갈 수 없다.[17] 보통 레이싱에 참가하는 차량의 경우 부품을 수작업으로 만들어 사용하는 경우나 출시된 제품들을 조합하여 사용하는 경우가 많지만 TCR 차량의 경우 메이커에서 출시한 차량이다 일반 승용차처럼 메이커에 연락을 하면 필요한 부품과 정비에 필요한 특수공구 등까지 손쉽게 구입이 가능하다(실제 경주에서는 현대 모터스포트 커스터머 레이싱이라는 이름으로 이러한 선수나 팀을 지원하고 있다.). 또한, 일정 금액만 내면 전문 엔지니어까지 파견해 준다.[18] 준우승 이반 뮐러[19] 준우승 BRC 레이싱(가브리엘 타퀴니)[20] 여담이지만 KMSA의 슈퍼레이스 참전은 2018년 이후 3년 만의 일이다.[21] 250PS 18인치[22] 275PS 19인치[23] TCR 규정 드라이버 포함 최소무게이다. 하지만 경량화로 규정보다 차체가 가볍기 때문에 차량 중심부에 추를 추가해서 맞춘다.[24] i30 N은 일반형과 출시시기가 달랐기 때문에 풀체인지가 별도로 진행될 가능성도 점쳐볼 수 있지만 자사의 차량에 스포츠성을 부여하기로한 N의 취지를 고려하면 출시시기가 늦었다고해서 i30 N만 구형인체로 방치할 수도 없는 노릇이다. 일반형과 동시에 출시된 N은 오직 2세대 벨로스터와 동시에 출시된 벨로스터N 뿐이기 때문에 i30 N을 통해서 규칙이 정립되면 나머지도 같은 수순을 밟을 것으로 예상할 수 있겠다.[25] 벨로스터 N이 단종될 때 아이오닉5 N 등 전기차 베이스의 N으로 향한 세대교체 분위기로 여겨져 내연기관 베이스의 N의 미래가 모두 불투명해졌었으나 SX2 코나를 베이스로 한 코나 N이 출시될 예정임이 밝혀져 내연기관이라고 해서 N이 단종되는 상황은 면한 것으로 보인다. 이를 통해 N 모델들은 베이스 모델들과 궤를 같이 하는 방향으로 개발되는 것이 밝혀졌다. 요컨데 벨로스터는 아예 차종 자체를 단종시켜버려 벨로스터 N은 페이스리프트 한번 없이 사라졌으며 코나는 풀체인지를 받았기 때문에 N도 2세대 모델이 나온다는 것이다.
