1. 개요

조지아주 중서부에 위치하는 도시. 인구 약 20만명. 최근 주변 지역의 발전으로 조지아주에서 애틀랜타 다음으로 큰 도시가 되었다.

애틀랜타에서 흘러오는 채터후치 강 연안에 있으며, 서쪽은 앨라배마 주다. 큰 군사 기지가 있는 군사 도시인데, 최근 교통상의 이점과 낮은 세율로 기업을 유치하여 경제를 발전시키려고 하고 있다. 대한민국의 기아자동차 공장 후보지로도 알려졌던 도시였지만, 기아자동차는 이 도시 대신 이 곳에서 북쪽으로 50km 정도 떨어진 웨스트포인트에 현지공장을 세웠다. 그래도 미국에서는 이 정도면, 한 생활권으로 보기 때문에 이 도시도 많은 혜택을 보고 있다고 한다.

2. 역사

콜럼버스는 조지아주의 서쪽 국경을 강화하고, 수력 발전과 강을 통한 교역 잠재력을 고려해 1828년에 주의회 결의로 계획도시로 설립되었다. 이 도시는 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스의 이름을 따서 명명되었다. 원래 이 곳은 아메리칸 원주민들이 살고 있었으나 강제로 쫓겨났다. 채터후치 강은 콜럼버스가 세계와 연결되는 통로 역할을 했는데, 특히 면화 재배지에서 뉴올리언스를 거쳐 영국 리버풀 까지 국제 면화 시장으로 상품 면화 작물을 운송할 수 있게 해 주었다. 1850년대에 철도가 개통되면서 이 도시의 상업적 중요성이 더욱 커졌다. 860년까지 이 도시는 남부의 가장 중요한 산업 중심지 중 하나가 되었고, 매사추세츠의 중요한 방직 공장 도시를 가리키는 '남부의 로웰' 이라는 별명을 얻었다.

1861년 미국 남북 전쟁이 발발 하자 콜럼버스의 산업은 생산을 확대했고, 이는 남부 연합에서 가장 중요한 산업 중심지 중 하나가 되었다. 전쟁 중 콜럼버스는 남부 연합 군대에 필요한 물자를 생산하는 데 있어 남부 연합의 수도인 버지니아주 리치먼드에 이어 2위를 차지했다. 그랜트에게 리가 항복 하고 에이브러햄 링컨이 암살당했다는 사실을 모른 채, 북군과 남부군은 1865년 4월 16일 부활절 일요일 조지아주 콜럼버스에서 충돌했다. 제임스 H. 윌슨 소장이 이끄는 북군 기병 2개 사단의 분견대 가 방어가 취약한 이 도시를 공격하여 많은 산업 건물을 불태웠다. 후에 콜럼버스에서 코카콜라를 개발한 존 스티스 펨버튼은 이 전투에서 부상을 입었다.

도시가 확장되면서 지도자들은 2년제 교육기관인 콜럼버스 대학을 설립했는데, 이는 나중에 콜럼버스 주립 대학으로 발전했고, 현재는 포괄적인 고등 교육의 중심지이자 조지아 대학 시스템의 일부가 되었다. 1960년대부터 1980년대까지, 보조금을 받은 고속도로와 교외 건설은 중산층과 상류층을 이탈시켰고, 콜럼버스 도심과 인근 지역 대부분에 도시 황폐화, 백인 탈출, 그리고 매춘이 만연하게 만들었다. 1960년대 후반과 1970년대 초반, 베트남 전쟁에서 돌아온 군인들과 포트 베닝 관련자들을 수용하기 위해 대규모 주택 단지가 건설되었다. 이러한 개선을 통해 시는 이전에 황폐했던 지역에 주민과 기업을 유치했다.

  • 콜럼버스 박물관 (Columbus Museum) : 1953년에 설립된 박물관으로 미국 미술과 지역 역사에 관한 많은 유물을 소장하고 있다.
  • 국립 남북전쟁 해군 박물관 (National Civil War Naval Museum) : 남부연합 해군 함선 두 척의 잔해를 소장하고 있다. 또한 북부의 미국(연방) 해군과 남부연합 해군이 사용했던 군복, 장비, 무기도 전시 되어 있다.
  • 코카콜라 우주과학센터 (Coca-Cola Space Science Center) : 1996년 과학 , 물리 , 천문학 분야의 대중 교육을 목적으로 개관했다.
  • 채터후치 리버워크 (Chattahoochee RiverWalk) : 콜럼버스의 채터후치 강을 따라 약 35km에 달하는 걷기 및 자전거 도로
