1. 개요

2019년 대한민국 인디게임 개발사 반지하게임즈를 설립한 게임 기획자이자 CEO이다.

특이하게도 본래 전공은 법학이다.[1] 성균관대학교 글로벌리더학부를 칼졸업한 뒤 성균관대학교 법학전문대학원 10기로 입학했을 정도로 게임 개발과 무관한 삶을 사는 듯 했으나, 2015년부터 고등학교 동창 출신 둘[2]과 함께 반지하게임즈라는 이름의 팀을 설립해 취미로 모바일 게임을 제작한 것[3]이 계기가 되어 2019년에는 로스쿨을 중도휴학하고 법인을 설립하면서 대표이사가 되었다. 게임 회사 경력은커녕 취업 이력도 없다가 첫 직장으로 창업을 하게 된 셈.

본인이 라이브 방송이나 오프라인 행사 등에서 말하길, 대한민국 인디게임업계에서 '유명한 것으로 유명'하다고 한다. 이는 2016년부터 출시한 작품들이 국내에서 스트리머 방송이나 각종 공모전 등을 통해 꽤 자주 노출되었기 때문인데, 그러다보니 자신의 게임을 중고등학생 때 플레이해본 경험이 있는 업계인들을 종종 만나게 된다고 한다. 또한 팬들과의 소통도 활발히 하는 편이어서 비정기적으로 반지하게임즈 유튜브 채널을 통해 라이브 방송을 뜬금없이 켠다거나, 디스코드나 오픈채팅방을 통해 자신의 일상을 공유하거나 게임에 대한 토론을 격의 없이 나누는 등, 상당히 정제되지 않고 자유로운 태도를 보인다.

2023년에 국립현대미술관에서 최초로 게임을 주제로 한 <게임사회>전에 서울 2033이 전시되면서, 자신의 작품을 국립현대미술관에 전시한 최초이자 유일한 모바일 게임 개발자가 되었다.

게임 기획에 대해 관심이 많아서인지 국내 인디게임 오프라인 행사와 강연, 멘토링 등에 활발히 참여한다. 2021년에는 한국콘텐츠진흥원 게임인재원 게임기획반의 교수를 역임했으며, 2025년에는 경기게임아카데미 심사위원 및 창업멘토로 위촉되었다.

3. 생애

초등학교부터 고등학교 때까지 일산에 살았다. 초등학생 때부터 창작에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 처음에는 이지툰을 활용한 애니메이션을 그리다가, 이후 직접 상호작용할 수 있는 게임을 만들고 싶단 생각에 RPG2000이나 RPG2003 같은 쯔꾸르 게임 제작 툴을 통해 게임을 만들었다고 한다. 그러나 당시 쯔꾸르 게임들을 플레이하기 위해서는 런타임 패키지 설치를 해야 하는 등 불편한 점이 많았기에 더 많은 사람들에게 편하게 게임을 보여주고 싶은 마음에 무작정 플래시 게임 개발을 공부하기 시작했다고 한다. 이때가 초등학교 5학년 때였다고 하는데, 당시에는 플래시365, 주전자닷컴, 네이버 붐 등에서 활발하게 자작 플래시 게임들이 올라오는 등 인기가 무척 많은 때였다.

당시 활동명은 토리원이었으며, 상당히 인기가 있었다. 이따금씩 자신의 플래시 게임이나 활동명을 기억하던 사람들을 업계에서 만나게 될 때 무척 반갑고 감회가 새롭다고 한다. 초등학교 6학년 때에는 플래시365에서 개최한 자작게임 공모전에서 수상하여 사이트 내에 개인 게시판을 상으로 수여받을 정도였다. 지금도 토리원 시절의 게임을 이따금씩 찾을 수 있는데, '도라에몽 핵 피하기'가 바로 그것이다.

학창 시절에는 공부를 꽤나 잘했던 것으로 보인다. 중학교 때 전교 1등을 해본 경험이 있다고 하며, 당시 막 개교한 고양국제고등학교에 1기로 입학했다. 원래는 역덕 기질이 있어 역사교육과나 사학과를 지망했었다고 한다. 2010년 당시 엔하위키에 포에니 전쟁 첫 문서를 작성한 것이 자신이라며 자랑하곤 한다[4]. 수능을 5개 틀렸다. 국어 영역 100점, 수학 88점, 영어 96점, 한국사 48점, 동아시아사 50점을 받았는데, 수학을 원래 못하긴 했지만 자신이 받아본 점수 중 가장 낮았다고 한다. 다행히 고등학교 3학년 시절 담임 선생님의 권유로 수시 원서를 넣어둔 성균관대학교 글로벌리더학부에 논술 전형으로 통과하면서 재수를 면했다고 한다. 그때 본인은 자신이 가게 되는 대학의 그 전공이 뭘 가르치는지도 몰랐다고...

성균관대학교에 진학하면서 문과 캠퍼스가 있는 명륜동에 쭉 지냈다고 한다. 이 당시, 첫 자취방이 보증금 200만원에 월세 30만원짜리 반지하 방이었는데, 그때 방이 정말로 대학생들 등교길 한복판에 붙어있는 데다가 현관문을 열면 복도나 로비도 없이 바로 방 안이 훤히 보이는 구조였던지라 많은 추억이 있었다고 한다. 학과 생활을 좋아하던 편이어서, 다양한 동기와 후배들이 자기 방을 등하굣길에 과방처럼 사용하곤 했는데, 그때마다 자신이 만든 게임을 보여주면서 기뻤던 경험을 잊지 말자는 뜻으로 반지하게임즈라는 이름을 떠올렸다고 한다.

대학교 재학 중이던 2015년에는 성균관대학교 중앙이스포츠동아리이자 이스포츠 팀인 팀 선비의 회장을 맡기도 했다. 이때의 인연으로 하스스톤 스트리머 및 선수 몇몇과 안면이 있는 듯하다.

2015년, 고등학교 시절 자신이 게임을 만드는 특이한 학생이었음을 기억한 고등학교 동창들이 연락하면서 게임 개발을 무작정 시작하게 되었고, 그 결과 허언증 소개팅!과 중고로운 평화나라가 큰 성공을 거뒀지만 자신은 그때까지도 게임 기획자가 자신의 직업이 될 거라 생각하지 못했다고 한다. 2018년에 LEET에서 138.4점이라는 우수한 성적을 받으며 로스쿨에 10기로 입학했고, 2학년 2학기 중간고사 이후 중도휴학한 뒤 2년간 복학하지 않아 제적 처리될 위기에 놓이자 자퇴했다.

현재는 반지하게임즈에서 CEO 및 수석 기획자, 각 프로젝트의 메인 디렉터로 일하고 있다.

존경하는 개발자는 Papers, Please와 Return of the Obra Dinn 등을 개발한 루카스 포프라고 한다.
대학생 시절 야생의 땅: 듀랑고를 팀 선비 길드 내에서 요리사로 열심히 플레이하다가 튀긴 누에끼리 번식시켜 막강한 음식을 만들 수 있는 버그를 최초로 발견하고 듀랑고 인벤에 '이제는 유전공학도 가능하다'는 제목으로 제보하여 많은 추천을 받은 바 있다. 이때 이후 실제로 당시 듀랑고 PM을 업계에서 만난 적이 있었는데 본인을 기억해줘서 기뻤다고 한다.
팬덤으로부터 탈모로 심각하게 놀림받고 있지만, 본인의 주장으로는 워낙 머리숱이 적고 모발이 가늘어서 그래보이는 것일뿐 실제로 머리카락 개수의 추이를 미분하면 0이라고 주장한다.
본인이 스스로 나무위키 문서를 만들고 작성까지 하였다. 이후 틈틈이 동료들과 함께 문서 내용을 추가하거나 중간 중간 확인하는 것을 자신의 유튜브 라이브로 송출하겠다고.
냄새에 둔감한 편이지만, 돼지 누린내에는 민감하게 반응한다고 한다.
B형 간염에 걸린 적이 있다. 업무 상으로 바쁜 시기였기도 하고, 도토리카 사태 때문에 심적으로 많이 힘들었을 때라 간염이라는 생각 조차 하지 못했었다고.[5] 그러나 두드러기성 발진이나 식욕 부진, 피부 변색이 계속되자 무언가 잘못되어가고 있다는 것을 느끼고 대학병원에서 정밀 진료를 받아 자신이 간염이라는 사실을 알게 되었다. 의사는 당장 죽어도 이상할 정도가 아니라며 입원을 권했지만, 내일 있을 소개팅을 이유(...)로 입원을 미뤘다.
