삼성 엑시노스(Samsung Exynos)는 삼성전자의 SoC 프로세서 브랜드다.
엑시노스는 그리스어로 "똑똑하다"라는 έξυπνος(éxypnos) 와 "푸르다" 라는 뜻의 Πράσινο(prasino) 를 합친 이름이다. 한국을 포함한 글로벌 브랜드로서 Exynos라고 명시하나, 중화권 현지에서는 Exynos 그대로 표기하거나 猎户座(엽호좌; 오리온자리)로 부르기도 한다.[3]

3. 특징
삼성 시스템LSI에서 설계하고 삼성 파운드리에서 생산한다. 2011년 2월 MWC에서 모바일 프로세서 브랜드로서 최초 출범하였으며, 이후 삼성전자의 프로세서 라인업 대부분을 아우르는 브랜드로 확장되었다.당연히 삼성 갤럭시에 주로 탑재되는 AP로 삼성 파운드리의 주요 일감이기도 한다. 또한 TSMC에 외주를 주지 않는 몇 안되는 AP 중 하나다.
3.1. CPU
기본적으로 Arm Holdings의 레퍼런스 아키텍처를 세미 커스터마이징하여 사용한다.한때 미국 지사인 SARC[4]에 CPU 개발인력을 두어 이를 중심으로 커스텀 CPU 인 몽구스 시리즈를 개발해 사용했었다. 엑시노스 8890의 M1이 그 첫 발걸음. 자세한 내용은 삼성전자/마이크로아키텍처 참조. 하지만 경쟁력이 떨어져 삼성 엑시노스 990을 마지막으로 포기하였다. 향후 삼성에서는 NPU와 GPU에 역량을 집중하여 미래 AP 시장에서 주도권을 가져오겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.
3.2. GPU
과거에는 한두번 PowerVR을 사용할 때를 제외하고는 전부 ARM-Mali를 주력으로 써왔으며, 현재는 엑시노스 2200을 기점으로 AMD의 RDNA 아키텍처를 라이센싱 받아 이를 커스텀한 독자 GPU IP로 전환하였다.====# ARM-Mali #====
ARM Mali 그래픽을 사용한 칩들의 경우 퀄컴 Adreno 시리즈 대비 성능, 전성비, 발열 특성&스로틀링 특성이 떨어지고 벤치마크 성능과는 별개로 실제 성능마저 폐급이라는[5] ARM Mali 그래픽의 단점을 그대로 떠안게 되었다. ARM Mali가 최신 API를 Adreno보다 더 잘 지원한다고는 하지만 아이러니하게 퀄컴 Adreno가 그것을 지원하지 못하는 상황에서는 Adreno에 맞춰서 개발해야 하기 때문에 장점이 되지는 못한다.
2010년 초중반대에는 삼성전자 파운드리가 공정 경쟁력에서 당시 퀄컴 스냅드래곤이 생산되던 TSMC보다 좀 더 앞서던 시절인지라 이를 무기로 삼아 이를 어느 정도 메꾸는 것이 가능했다.[6] 하지만 이러한 우위는 7nm 를 기점으로 TSMC가 삼성전자를 상대로 공정 기술력 측면에서 역전을 이루어 내는 데에 성공하면서 삼성 파운드리로 생산처가 고정되어 있는 엑시노스 입장에서는 퀄컴이 TSMC를 선택하게 될 경우 오히려 생산 측면에서 불리한 조건을 안고 가야 하는 상황이 되었다.
특히 2010년대 후반을 기점으로 IP인 Arm-Mali와 생산처인 삼성 파운드리의 기술력 모두 크게 흔들리기 시작하면서 상황이 크게 악화되었으며, 2020년에 엑시노스 990이라는 심각한 결함품을 내놓으며 안 좋은 의미로 정점을 찍게 된다. 후속작인 엑시노스 2100의 경우 Vulkan API 한정으로는 동세대 Adreno를 앞서는데 성공하였으나, 대부분의 게임에 쓰이는 OpenGL에서는 여전히 크게 밀리는 수준을 보여주었다.
Mali의 처참한 전성비와 면성비에 학을 뗀 삼성전자는 다방면으로 신규 GPU IP를 모색하였으며, 이후 AMD의 RDNA 아키텍처를 도입하게 된다. 플래그십급에선 엑시노스 2100, 보급형에서는 1380을 마지막으로 ARM-Mali 탑재는 종료되었으며, 후술된 RDNA기반 커스텀 아키텍처로 넘어가게 되었다.

의 [[삼성전자/마이크로아키텍처#|]] 부분을2019년 6월 3일, 삼성전자는 AMD과 협력을 공식적으로 발표했으며, 첫 결과물은 2022년에 RDNA2의 모바일 축소형인 mRDNA2 아키텍처 기반의 Xclipse 920이 탑재된 엑시노스 2200에서 선보였다. 첫세대의 경우 처음 시도하는 탓에 떨어지는 아키텍처 역량과[7] 제조공정의 수율의 한계로[8] 인해 퀄검의 Adreno를 따라잡기는커녕 대체하고자 했던 동세대의 ARM Mali를 채용한 Dimensity 9000보다도 떨어지는 성능과 전성비로 실망감을 안겨주었다.
2024/5년에는 크게 일신된 모습을 보여주고 있긴 하지만, 아직도 실사용환경에의 전성비가 경쟁사들 대비 동 세대 제품이라고 볼 수 없을만큼 떨어지는 상황이다. 단순히 파운드리만의 탓이 아니라 아키텍처와 드라이버도 문제가 많다는 시각이 지배적이다.
이에 반해 ARM Mali는 2024년 들어 아키텍처를 완전히 일신하여 퀄컴 Adreno를 상당부분 따라잡는데 성공했다. 즉, 정상화된 것은 오히려 엑시노스가 버린 Mali였고 새로 갈아탄 RDNA가 썩은 동앗줄이었던 셈이다.
다만 삼성이 해당 결정을 내릴 당시에 Mali는 말 그대로 폐급인 상황이었기 때문에 이는 결과론적인 평가에 가깝다. 게다가 2024년 들어 일신한 것도 미디어텍이 Arm과의 공동개발 형태로 개입하여 나온 것이다. 또한 RDNA 도입은 엑시노스의 단순 성능 개선을 넘어 GPU 관련 기술력 내재화에 그 궁극적인 목적이 있다. 삼성은 2023년 6월 AMD와 RDNA IP 라이센스 다년계약을 체결하며 지속적으로 RDNA IP 기반 커스텀 아키텍처 사용을 확대할 계획을 밝혔다.#

이쪽 역시 현재 주력으로 쓰이는 정수 연산 분야에서 퀄컴에게 상당히 밀리는 편이라 평가는 좋지 않다. 다만 자사 완제품 기기가 없어 특화반도체인 AI가속기를 최대한 범용성 있게 만들어야 하는 모순적인 상황에 처해있는 퀄컴/미디어텍의 AP들과는 달리 수직계열화가 잘 이루어진 삼성전자의 자사 완제품에 넣는 것이 목적인 엑시노스의 NPU는 확실한 방향성이 있다는 구도적 장점을 가지고 있으므로 장기적으로는 타사 대비 앞서나가거나 열세이더라도 실사용 환경에서는 그 폭을 줄일 가능성이 높다고 기대해볼 수 있다.
그러나 NPU 성능을 강조하는 것이 무색하게 실제로는 NPU API를 지원하지 않아서 서드파티 앱에서는 사용이 불가능하다(...) 아래 문단 참조.
3.4. SCI
엑시노스 8890부터 코어간의 캐시 데이터 일관성 유지를 위해 Arm의 CCI가 아닌 Samsung Coherent Interconnect를 직접 설계하여 사용하였다.하지만 CCI가 DynamIQ 세대에서 DSU(DynamIQ Shared Unit)로 변경되고 CPU와 더 긴밀하게 상호작용하게 변경됨에 따라, 개발해왔던 SCI를 포기하고 Arm의 DSU를 사용하게 된다. 삼성은 DSU와 자체 제작한 GPU와 NPU를 연결하기 위해 Interconnect를 자체 개발하게 되었고, 이 Interconnect가 SCI의 이름을 물려받게 되었다.
이후 ARMv9.2를 맞이하여 Arm을 사용하는 SoC의 구조는 다시한번 변혁을 겪게 되는데, 이에 SCI역시 큰 규모의 구조 변경이 이루어져야만 했다. 이를 위해 삼성은 ARM의 Interconnect 전문가였던 나이젤 페이버 박사를 영입했다.

삼성전자가 자체적인 파운드리를 보유하고 있는 데다가 SoC 제조와 관련하여 타 기업들과 협력을 하기도 하는 만큼, 공식적으로 엑시노스 라인업에 속해 있지는 않지만 사실상 삼성 엑시노스의 파생형으로 취급되는 SoC들도 일부 존재한다.- Apple A5X까지의 Apple Silicon: 특히 이 중에서도 A4는 같은 시기에 출시된 엑시노스 3110과 구성이 거의 동일하여 사실상의 파생형으로 취급된다.
- Google Tensor SoC (GS101): Google Pixel 6 / Google Pixel 6 Pro에 탑재되는 SoC이다. S5P9845라는 삼성식 파트넘버가 프린팅되어 있는데, 바로 전작인 엑시노스 2100의 파트넘버가 S5E9840이라는 점을 고려하면 2100의 개량형으로 볼 수 있다. 구성 및 기술 측면에서도 엑시노스 2100과 유사하지만 세세한 부분에서 차이가 있다.[9]
5. 문제점
===# 보안 관련 문제점(해결) #===2012년 12월, 엑시노스 4 시리즈의 커널소스에서 보안 취약점이 발견되었다. 피지컬 메모리에 직접접근이 가능한 결함이다. 이것을 이용하여 원클릭으로 루팅을 하는 애플리케이션이 공개되기도 했다. 삼성전자에서는 해당 문제를 파악하고 패치 작업을 진행 중이라고 밝혔다. 이 문제는 갤럭시 노트 10.1를 시작으로 하여 2013년 상반기에 패치를 완료하였다.
2023년 구글프로젝트 제로[10]에서 18개의 제로데이를 발견했다. 그중 4개는 휴대폰 번호만 있으면 원격코드실행까지 가능한 취약점이라고 한다. 현재는 수정된 패치가 세트업체에 발행됐다.[11]

더더욱 큰 문제로 꼽히는 것은 지역에 따른 AP 이원화인데, 거의 대부분 엑시노스가 탑재되는 대부분의 지역과 다르게 북미·일본·중국 시장에서는 플래그십에 스냅드래곤을 고정으로 탑재하기 때문이다.[13] 똑같은 가격을 지불하고 똑같은 이름의 제품을 사는데 특정 지역이라는 이유만으로 AP의 품질이 반세대에서 최대 1.5세대 정보 차이가 나니 당연히 해당 지역에서 불만이 터져나올 수 밖에 없다.
삼성전자가 각종 비판과 완제품 경쟁력 하락 우려에도 엑시노스 사용을 포기하지 않는 이유는 바로 기술력과 영업이익 때문이다. 전자기기에서 AP는 워낙 핵심적이고 단가도 높은 부품이라 외부에 의존하게 되면 시장 장악력 및 이윤에 큰 위협이 되므로 삼성은 AP 내재화에 큰 심혈을 기울이고 있다. 더 나아가 엑시노스를 통해 삼성 파운드리와 LSI가 충분한 일감을 보장받을 수 있어 엑시노스는 삼성전자 비메모리 반도체 사업의 핵심이자 미래 성장동력 그 자체라고 봐도 과언이 아니다.
물론 이는 어디까지나 원인에 대한 분석이기에 참작 사유가 될 수는 있어도, 기업의 사정을 소비자가 고려해줄 필요는 없기에 변명이 될 수가 없다. 또한 삼성 갤럭시는 안드로이드 세계에서 가장 비싼 가격대를 형성하고 있음에도 엑시노스를 고집하는 건 물론 해외와의 이원화로 인해 지역 차별까지 자행한 게 이 논란의 핵심인 걸 감안하면, 이 논란은 그 누구도 아닌 삼성전자 스스로가 자초한 것이다.[14]
5.2. NPU API 미지원 문제
삼성이 엑시노스의 NPU 성능을 홍보하는 것이 무색하게, 실제로는 서드파티 개발자가 엑시노스의 NPU를 사용할 수 있는 방법이 사실상 전무하다. 이는 엑시노스 NPU가 안드로이드의 표준 머신러닝 API(NNAPI)를 지원하지 않으며[15] 그렇다고 엑시노스 전용 API를 따로 제공하는 것도 아니기 때문이다. 본래 삼성 뉴럴 SDK가 있었으나 이마저도 2021년 이후로 지원이 끊겼다. 심지어 삼성이 직접 개발하는 머신러닝 프레임워크에서도 엑시노스를 지원하지 않는다.#고로 삼성이 자랑하는 그 NPU 성능도 과연 정말인지 제대로 검증할 방법이 없다.[16][17]

[a] #[a] [3] 바이두 백과에서는 문서 표제는 Exynos이지만 중국어 명칭으로 猎户座로 나와 있다.[4] Samsung Austin R&D Center[5] 이는 그렇지 않아도 별로 뛰어나지 못한 Mali가 범용 연산과 최신 API 최적화에 치우쳐 설계되기 때문에 발생하는 문제점으로, 구형 API를 이용한 셰이딩 방면에서의 연산력이 주로 요구되는 대부분의 게임에서는 벤치마크 점수 대비 저조한 성능을 보여주는 원인이 된다.[6] 전력 대 성능비 부분에서는 호평을 받은 우드가르드 아키텍처를 사용한 ARM Mali-400 쿼드코어는 문제되지 않고, 전력 대 성능비로 인해 비판받는 미드가르드 아키텍처를 사용한 ARM Mali-T628 헥사코어의 경우 3~4 W 정도 전력을 소모[18]하고, ARM Mali-T604는 스마트폰에는 탑재되지 않았으며 엑시노스 7 Octa (5433)의 ARM Mali-T760 헥사코어는 5~6 W 정도 소모하지만 실제 갤럭시 노트4를 보면 배터리쪽으로 큰 문제는 터지지 않았다. ARM Mali-T760 옥타코어는 20nm HKMG 공정에서 14nm FinFET LPE 공정으로 미세화된 효과까지 받아 4W 후반대 정도의 전력을 소모되는 것으로 추산되고 있다.[7] 당시 삼성은 아예 GPU개발 이력 자체가 거의 없고, AMD역시 퀄컴에 모바일 그래픽 사업부를 매각한 뒤로 모바일 그래픽에 대한 이력은 사실상 백지 수준이었다.[8] 엑시노스 2200을 생산하던 SF4E 공정은 밀도 당시 목표 클럭을 한참 낮추고도 20%대의 수율을 보여주는 등 그야말로 처참한 모습이었다.[9] 빅코어(Cortex X1)의 개수가 2개로 늘어난 대신 미들코어가 Cortex-A78 3개에서 Cortex-A76 2개로 감소했으며, 전반적인 클럭도 감소했다.
