1. 개요

강론(Homilia, 講論)은 가톨릭 성직자가 미사 등의 전례에서 신앙의 신비와 그리스도인 생활 규범을 성경 구절로 해설하는 전례 행위이다.[1]

2. 강론이 성립하기 위한 형식적 요건, 그리고 설교와 강론의 차이

앞 문단의 정의를 포함하여 가톨릭 교회의 공적 지침들은 강론의 형식적 요건으로 다음을 공통적으로 제시한다.
  • 행위자는? → 성직자
  • 언제? → 전례 때
언뜻 "개신교에서는 설교라고 칭하고, 가톨릭에서는 '강론'이라고 부른다."라고 받아들이기 쉽지만, 사실 개신교의 설교와 가톨릭의 강론은 1대 1로 대응되는 개념이 아니다. 첫째, 가톨릭 교회에도 '설교'가 있으며, 둘째, '강론'은 '설교'의 한 형태이다. 이를 표로 나타내면 다음과 같다.

3.1. 미사

강론은 전례의 한 부분으로서, 그리스도인의 삶을 살찌우는 데 반드시 필요하므로 크게 권장된다. 강론은 그날 봉독한 성경의 내용 또는 그날 미사의 통상문이나 고유 전례문에 대한 설명이어야 한다. 강론을 할 때는 거행하는 신비나 듣는 사람들의 특수한 상황도 고려해야 한다.

강론은 원칙적으로 주례 사제가 한다. 공동 집전 사제 가운데 한 사람이나 필요한 경우 부제에게 맡길 수도 있지만, 평신도에게는 결코 맡길 수 없다.

3.2. 시간 전례

특히 교우들과 함께 기도를 바칠 때, 원한다면 독서기도나 미사 독서집에서, 특히 어떤 이유로 읽을 수 없었던 독서 중에서 더 긴 성경 독서를 택할 수 있다. 제248-249, 251항의 규범에 따라, 더 적합한 독서의 선택을 금하는 것은 아무것도 없다.
성무일도를 교우들과 함께 바칠 때에, 필요하다면 위의 성경 독서를 해설하는 간단한 강론을 덧붙일 수 있다.

흔히 미사/말씀 전례의 강론만을 떠올리기 쉽지만, 시간 전례 때도 성직자는 강론을 할 수 있다.

지금의 「로마 미사 경본 총지침」은 강론에 관하여 아래처럼 '평신도에게는 결코 맡길 수 없다.'라는 분명한 원칙을 제시한다.
강론은 원칙적으로 주례 사제가 한다. 공동 집전 사제 가운데 한 사람이나 필요한 경우 부제에게 맡길 수도 있지만, 평신도에게는 결코 맡길 수 없다.

한편 한국 천주교는 「한국 교회의 교회법 보완 규정」의 부칙에서 『교회법』 767조를 보완하기 위한 보다 구체적인 규정을 마련해 두었다. 그런데 많은 이들이 이 규정만 가지고 평신도에게도 강론이 허용되었다고 잘못 이해한다. 이 때문에 군인 주일이나 평신도 주일에 평신도에게 강론을 맡기는 여러 사례가 발생한다.

먼저 『교회법』 766조와 「한국 교회의 교회법 보완 규정」의 부칙을 보자.
평신도들은 어떤 특정한 상황에서 필요하거나 혹은 개별적인 경우에 유익하다면, 주교회의의 규정에 따라서 성당이나 경당에서 설교하도록 허용될 수 있다. 다만 제767조 제1항은 보존된다.

한국 천주교 주교회의는 평신도 주일과 군인 주일 등 필요하고 유익한 경우에 교구장이 정한 규범에 따라 평신도가 성당이나 경당에서 설교하는 것을 허락한다.

언뜻 위 두 규정(특히 「한국 교회의 교회법 보완 규정」의 부칙)이 평신도의 강론을 허용함으로써 이 문단 첫머리의 「로마 미사 경본 총지침」 66항과 상충되는 듯 보일 수 있다. 그렇다면 『교회법』 766조와 「한국 교회의 교회법 보완 규정」의 부칙이 「로마 미사 경본 총지침」 66항과 정말로 상충하는가? 그렇지 않다. 『교회법』 766조와 「한국 교회의 교회법 보완 규정」의 부칙에는 '미사'나 '강론'이라는 말이 없다. 이는 『교회법』 766조가 언급하는 767조 1항을 통해 더욱 분명히 나타난다.
강론은 설교의 여러 형식 중에서 탁월한 것으로 전례의 한 부분이며 사제나 부제에게 유보된다. 전례 주기를 따라 강론 중에 신앙의 신비와 그리스도교인 생활의 규범이 성경 구절로 해설되어야 한다.

  • 미사/말씀 전례 중 강론 때 사제 개인의 성향이 가장 크게 드러난다. 성직자로서의 경험이 쌓이다 보면 발성이나 스피치 등 많은 면에서 신자들의 좋은 반응을 이끌어내기 위한 노하우가 쌓여 더 능숙해지기도 한다. 또한 일부 신부들은 자신의 강론을 유튜브, 블로그 등에 업로드하고 콘텐츠로 가공함으로써 미디어 선교에도 기여하고 있다.
