프로듀서는 데이브 머스테인과 댄 허프.

5집에서의 연장선으로 좀 더 소프트해지면서도 6집과 다른 시도들을 행한 앨범으로, <Trust>나 <She-Wolf>같은 곡들이 명곡으로 추앙 받는다.
비슷한 시기에 숙적 밴드가 실망스러운 작품을 연거푸 '장전', '재장전'하는 바람에 반사적으로 더 좋은 평가를 받았다는 느낌도... 닉 멘자가 메가데스내에서 참여한 마지막 앨범이기도 하다. 원래 이 음반의 가제는 'Needles and Pins'였지만 음반 표지 제작 과정에서 문제가 발생함에 따라 음반의 표지는 부두교 문양으로 대체되었고 제목은 'Cryptic Writings'로 바뀌었다. 빅 래틀헤드가 앨범 커버 앞뒷면에서 모두 사라진 첫 앨범.[1] 7집 역시 플래티넘을 넘기는 데에 성공.
