1. 개요

EGA(Enhanced Graphic Adaptor)는 1984년에 IBM이 개발한 그래픽 카드이다. 이름대로 CGA에 비해 강화(Enhanced)된 그래픽 기능을 가지고 나온 카드로 IBM PC AT가 나오고 얼마 지나지 않아 발매되었다. 연결 단자로 DE-9를 사용한다.

2. 사양

EGA가 출력할 수 있는 화면 모드는 다음과 같다.
  • 그래픽 모드
    • 640×350(픽셀 가로세로비 1:1.37) 64색 중 동시 16색 발색(단, 비디오 메모리가 64KB일 시 동시 발색이 4색으로 제한됨)
    • 640×200(픽셀 가로세로비 1:2.4) 16색[CGA하위호환]
    • 320×200(픽셀 가로세로비 1:1.2) 16색[CGA하위호환]
  • 문자 모드
    • 80자×25행 8×8 픽셀 글꼴(실효 해상도 640×200)

  • 주사율: 수평(15.75kHz(CGA 호환 모드), 21.8kHz(640×350 해상도)), 수직(60Hz)

CGA는 고작 16KB의 비디오 메모리를 가지고 있었기 때문에 320×200 해상도에서 4색, 640×200 해상도에서 2색만 표현할 수 있었다. 그러나 EGA는 기본 비디오 메모리로서 64KB를 탑재하였고, 최대 256KB까지 확장할 수 있었다. 128KB 이상의 메모리 상태에서는 640×350까지의 해상도에 16색을 동시에 표현할 수 있었다. CGA의 최대 단점이었던 낮은 해상도와 색상 표현력을 보완한 셈이다. 게다가 적록청 화소의 밝기를 4단계(꺼짐, 어두움, 중간, 밝음)로 해서 총 64색(43)을 팔레트 공간으로 가졌다. 즉, '색상'과 '고해상도' 중 어느 쪽도 포기하지 않을 수 있었다. 이게 개발되면서 IBM PC와 그 호환 기종들은 본격적인 고해상도 컬러 그래픽의 시대가 열리게 되었다. 하위 호환에 신경쓰는 IBM 답게 MDA 모니터(IBM 5151), CGA 모니터(IBM 5153)와 호환하는 기능도 갖추고 있다.

하지만 기본 비디오 메모리가 64KB에 불과하기 때문에 그래픽 모드에서의 동시 발색수는 16개뿐이었고, 이마저도 320×200 저해상도에서만 그랬다. 640×350 고해상도에서 16색을 보기 위해서는 EGA의 비디오 메모리를 128KB 이상으로 업그레이드해야 했다. 한편, 나머지 48가지의 색상을 보기 위해서는 다른 색상 팔레트를 써야 하는데 후술하겠지만 CGA 모니터와의 호환성 때문에 게임 개발사에서는 기본 팔레트를 선호했다.

EGA에서 지원하는 64색은 다음과 같다. 이들 중 # 표시가 있는 색상은 CGA에서도 지원하는 16색.

CGA에서 저해상도 글꼴이 악명 높았으나, EGA로 넘어오면서 이 점도 수정되어 보다 미려한 로만체를 지원하게 되었다. 그리고, 문자 모드에서 글꼴 세로 해상도를 반토막내 43행을 지원하는 기능도 추가되었다.

그러나 이듬해인 1985년에 나온 아미가나 아타리 ST, 그리고 그 이듬해인 1986년에 나온 애플 IIGS는 색상 표현이 EGA보다 월등했기 때문에 CGA의 악명 높은 색상 표현 수준을 벗어나긴 했어도 높은 평가까지는 받지 못했다. 그냥 나쁘지는 않다, 내지는 CGA의 저질 그래픽에서 벗어났다 정도.

같은 16색을 사용하는 비슷한 시기의 컴퓨터(MSX2 등)과 비교했을 때도 색감이 전반적으로 원색적이고 튀는 느낌이 있다. 척 보면 EGA 그래픽인 것을 알아볼 수 있을 정도로 독특하다. 위와 같이 게임에서 피부 색깔이 묘하게 벌겋게 묘사됐다 하면 십중팔구 EGA 이는 EGA의 64색 팔레트가 색이 적어서이기도 하지만(물론 512색 팔레트의 MSX2나 4096색 팔레트의 PC9801 등에 비하면 적은 것은 사실이다) 그것보다는 EGA 지원 게임들이 64색 팔레트 중 기본 16색 팔레트만 쓴 경우가 많았기 때문이다.

EGA에 EGA 모니터를 사용하면 64색 팔레트를 모두 이용할 수 있었지만 비싼 가격 때문에 널리 퍼지지 않았다. 반면 CGA 모니터는 640×350 고해상도나 64색 팔레트 이용이 불가능했고 기본 팔레트 16색만 표현할 수 있지만, CGA가 현역일 당시에는 매우 폭넓게 쓰인데다가 가격이 상대적으로 저렴했기 때문에 EGA에 CGA 모니터를 사용하는 경우도 많았다. 그리고 당연하지만 CGA 모니터 사용자들에게는 진짜 CGA 모드로 돌려서 우중충한 4색 화면을 보는 것보다는 EGA의 성능은 다 살리지 못해도 어쨌든 16색 화면을 보는 것이 훨씬 나았다. 그러다 보니 많은 게임들이 그냥 기본 팔레트 16색만 썼고 EGA의 능력을 잘 활용한 게임은 그리 많지 않다. EGA 색상 팔레트에 피부색을 표현하기에 더 적절한 색상이 있었음에도 불구하고 불그스름한 색상이 피부색으로 이용된 이유다.

그래도 IBM의 표준 컬러 그래픽으로 자리매김하며 ATI의 EGA Wonder 같은 호환 카드도 나오는 등 나름 북미와 서유럽 지역에서 선방했으며 1987년에 EGA 하위 호환 기능을 갖춘 VGA가 발매될 때까지 충분히 대중화되었다. 그러므로 이를 지원하는 게임은 아주 많이 있다. 1990년 무렵까지도 EGA까지만 지원하는 게임을 흔하게 볼 수 있었고 VGA가 일반화되고 난 1990년대에도 한참을 EGA 그래픽을 동시 지원하는 게임이 많이 나왔다. 한국에도 많이 알려진 게임이라면 대만에서 만든 삼국지 게임인 삼국연의[4]가 허큘리스 그래픽 카드와 함께 EGA의 640×350 16색 그래픽 모드를 지원한다. PC판 삼국지 2도 EGA를 지원하지만 PC-8801판을 이식했기 때문에 8801판의 해상도에 맞추어 640×200 해상도를 사용한다.

3. 동아시아에서의 EGA

북미, 유럽과 달리 많이 저조했다. 한 시대를 풍미하며 표준 그래픽 어댑터로 자리매김했던 미국, 유럽과 달리 대한민국, 홍콩, 대만에서는 그리 널리 쓰이지 못하고 허큘리스 그래픽 카드에 밀리다가 1990년대 접어들어 VGA와 컬러 모니터의 가격이 내려간 후 바로 VGA로 넘어가는 양상을 보였다. 한국에서도 1980년대 중후반에 금성사, 삼보컴퓨터, 삼성전자를 비롯한 일부 대기업이나, 일부 중소업체가 EGA 호환 보드를 내장한 AT, 386급 PC[5]를 내놓기도 했으나 그다지 많이 팔리지는 못했고 사무용, 개인용 할 것 없이 시장의 중심은 허큘리스였다. EGA는 모니터를 포함한 가격이 당시 개발도상국이었던 대한민국에서 너무 비쌌고, 640×350은 2바이트 문자권(DBCS) 국가들의 표준 문자 규격인 40×25행을 출력하기에는 모자란 해상도였기 때문에 때문에 비싼 가격을 감수하고 도입할 장점이 없었다. 그래픽스가 중요한 분야라면 매킨토시나 아미가 같은 EGA 보다 훨씬 나은 선택지도 있었다. 지금도 사무용 시장은 무시할 수 없지만 당시에는 사무용 시장이 개인용 시장보다 컸기 때문에 문자 모드는 중요한 요소였다.

이러한 문제로 동아시아에서는 EGA보다는 비록 단색이지만 고해상도를 지원하는 허큘리스 그래픽 카드가 보편적으로 사용되다가 1990년대에 ATI, S3 Graphics, Tseng Labs 같은 기업들에서 표준 VGA와 완전히 호환되면서도 더 많은 색상과 고해상도(SVGA), 윈도우 GUI 가속 기능들을 추가로 넣은 그래픽 칩셋들을 우후죽순 발매하며 치열하게 경쟁하면서 가격이 저렴해진 이후에 VGA로 넘어갔다. 이런 이유들로 동아시아의 EGA 보급은 대체로 매우 저조하였다. 그러나 일본을 제외한 동아시아인들에게도 EGA 그래픽이 보여주는 독특한 미감은 제법 익숙한 편인데, VGA가 주류로 올라서고 나서도 상당기간 EGA까지만 지원되는 게임이 꽤 많이 나왔고 VGA는 EGA의 상위호환성을 갖추고 있었기 때문이다.

동시기 일본은 개인용 컴퓨터로 PC-9801 시리즈가 주류였고 IBM PC 및 그 호환기종은 개인용 시장에서는 VGA와 DOS/V가 등장하기 이전엔 보급이 저조했기 때문에 VGA의 전 세대인 EGA가 쓰일 일은 한국, 홍콩 등보다도 더욱 적었다. 게임을 포함한 개인용 시장에서는 PC9801이나 X68000, FM TOWNS 등의 동시대 일본산 PC에 비하면 미미하다고 해도 좋을 정도의 보급률이었다.

그러나 의외로 사무용 시장에서는 어느 정도 의미있는 족적을 남기기는 했다. 원래부터 PC-9801은 사무용 시장을 타겟으로 하여 40자×25행의 가나/한자 표기를 목표로 개발된 컴퓨터였기 때문에[6] 처음부터 640×400의 고해상도를 지원하고 있었다. 색상의 경우 초기 모델은 8컬러 밖에 지원하지 못했지만 1985년부터는 4096색 중 최대 16색 발색을 지원했다. 이런 9801에 대항하기 위해서 1987년 아스키와 마이크로소프트가 MSX 규격으로 재미를 봤던 경험을 살려 일본어 환경을 하드웨어적으로 지원하는 IBM PC 호환기 규격인 'AX'라는 것을 만들고 이에 참여할 업체들을 모아 AX 협의회를 발족했는데, 이 AX 규격 PC에 들어간 것이 EGA의 확장 버전인 'JEGA'라는 그래픽카드이다.[7] 표준 EGA로는 해상도가 부족했기 때문에 CHIPS사의 Super EGA 칩셋을 이용해 640×480 해상도를 표시하고 여기에 아스키가 제조한 V6367칩을 사용해 하드웨어적으로 일본어를 지원하는 방식이었다. 그러나 PC98 시리즈의 압도적인 점유율에는 당해낼 수 없었고 설상가상으로 VGA 시대로 넘어간 후에는 일본 IBM에서 DOS/V가 나오면서 결국 AX 규격은 흐지부지하게 사라지고 말았다. AX 이외에도 독자적인 일본어 환경의 IBM PC 호환기종은 꽤 여러 규격이 나왔으나 상호간 호환성도 없다시피 했고 보급률도 높지 않았다. 이후 DOS/V가 등장하고 나서야 본격적으로 일본에서도 IBM PC 호환기종의 보급률이 유의미하게 상승하기 시작했으며 PC 시장의 주류가 PC-98 시리즈에서 IBM PC 호환 기종으로 완전히 넘어간 것은 Windows 95 발매 이후이다.
