1. 개요
구글에서 개발하는 오픈 소스 웹 브라우저 프로젝트.Chrome 등 여러 웹 브라우저에서 핵심 기술로 활용되고 있다. Chromium에서 오픈 소스로 배포되지 않는 '구글' 상표와 아이콘, AAC 오디오/H.264 동영상 재생 코덱, 구글 API 지원 등의 요소를 추가한 것이 구글 크롬인 셈.[1]
Windows 32·64bit와 Linux, macOS, Android 등 다양한 플랫폼을 지원한다.
자동 업데이트는 다음과 같은 방법으로 할 수 있다. Windows에서는 Chocolatey를 사용하면 가장 간편하게 업데이트할 수 있다.
굳이 크롬 대신 오픈 소스인 Chromium을 쓰고 싶다면 Hibbiki의 Chromium 버전을 사용하는 것을 권장한다. 기본적으로 Chromium은 코덱이 없어서 YouTube 같은 영상을 재생할 수 없지만, 이 버전은 코덱이 다 들어가 있으며 Google 계정 동기화를 지원한다.
2. 표기
발음은 [ˈkɹoʊ.mi.əm]이나, 개발사인 구글이 공식적인 한글 표기를 정하지 않아 크로미움, 크로미엄, 크로뮴[2] 등의 다양한 표기가 혼용되고 있다.3. 빌드 및 배포
Chromium 저장소에는 빌드된 실행 파일을 따로 배포하지 않고, 소스 코드만 제공한다.Linux 진영에서는 각 배포판을 담당하는 쪽에서 미리 컴파일한 후 패키지 관리자로 설치할 수 있도록 배포한다. 원래 오픈 소스 진영에서는 이런 경우가 많다. 하지만 Windows에서는 위 링크의 스냅샷 Windows용 최신 실행파일 포터블 다운 빼고는 직접 컴파일하는 방법밖에는 없다.[3]
- 소스 코드 덩치가 어마어마하다. Debian·Ubuntu 등에서 제공하는 패키지만 해도 200MB에 가깝다. 리눅스 커널의 소스 크기와 비슷하다. 공식 사이트의 Git 저장소를 통해 내려받으려면 10GB 정도는 비워두어야 한다. 시간별 변경사항이 기록된 파일들이 딸려오는데 이게 덩치가 정말 어마어마하다.
- 빌드에 앞서 소스 코드뿐 아니라
depot tools를 설치해야 한다. - 한 번 컴파일하려면 1시간 정도는 예사로 걸린다. 램이 적으면 훨씬 더 걸리는 경우도 있다.
- 새 버전은 정말 말 그대로 몇 시간마다 나온다.[4] 네 자리 중 첫 자리를 기준으로, 최근 자주 나오는 세 버전 중 가장 낮은 숫자가 공식 버전이고 이것만 보면 그리 자주 나오진 않지만 운 없으면 이것도 나온 지 진짜 몇 시간만에 새 버전이 나오기도 한다. 애초에 Chromium은 일반 사용자를 위한 버전이 아니라 개발자 또는 얼리어댑터들을 위한 버전이니 이러한 사용상의 불편함은 본인이 감수해야 할 부분이다. 한편 어떤 사람은 위 Chromium 스냅샷의 링크와 각종 정보를 업데이트하고 있다.[5]

원조인 Chrome은 철저하게 브라우저 본연의 기능(속도, 보안 등)에만 충실하고 그 외 별의별 자잘한 기능이나 특수한 고급 기능 등은 크롬 웹 스토어에서 크롬 확장 프로그램으로 오픈소스로 올리게 해서 필요할 경우 사용자가 확장 기능을 추가하는 식이다. Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저들은 크롬 웹 스토어에 있는 확장 기능 중 몇 가지를 웹 브라우저 기본 내장 기능으로 포함시킨 제품들이다. 각 Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저들이 내세우는 특별한 기능들은 거의 다 원조인 구글 크롬에서 확장 프로그램으로 설치해서 쓸 수 있는 기능들이다.물론 그렇다고 해서 크롬 확장기능을 쓰면 되니 다른 Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저들은 필요 없지 않느냐 하면 결코 아니다. 확장기능을 너무 많이 설치하면 브라우저 안정성과 속도가 저하된다. 그래서 확장 기능은 사용자에게 꼭 필요한 것만 설치하는 게 좋다. 만약 사용자에게 필요한 크롬 확장 기능이 꽤 많은데 어떤 Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저가 그 중 몇 가지는 웹 브라우저 내장 기능으로 기본으로 갖추고 있다면 그 웹 브라우저를 쓰고 더 필요한 몇 가지만 크롬 웹 스토어에서 추가해서 쓰는 것이 Chrome에 필요한 확장기능을 모조리 설치하는 것보다 속도, 보안, 안정성 면에서 훨씬 낫다.
보통 본인에게 필요한 확장기능이 많아야 두세개 정도면 그냥 크롬을 기본으로 깔고 웹 스토어를 이용해도 무방하지만 확장기능이 네다섯 이상으로 많이 필요한 경우라면 아래 Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저들 중 본인에게 필요한 확장기능 몇 가지를 기본으로 포함한 웹 브라우저 하나를 선택하고 나머지를 웹 스토어에서 받아쓰는 걸 권장한다.
Chromium 기반 모바일 웹 브라우저들은 키위 브라우저, Microsoft Edge를 제외하면 확장 프로그램 기능을 지원하지 않는다.
중국산 브라우저나 중국기업이 인수한 개발사는 中으로 표시한다.
- Microsoft Edge - 2019년에 EdgeHTML 엔진을 버리고 2020년 실제 Chromium 기반으로 다시 나왔다.
- 삼성 브라우저 - 삼성전자에서 개발한 웹 브라우저. 갤럭시 S4, Android 5.0 이상의 모든 삼성 갤럭시 스마트폰/태블릿에 기본으로 탑재되며, 다른 Android 5.0 이상의 스마트폰/태블릿에서도 설치가 가능하다.
- 네이버 웨일 - 네이버에서 개발한 웹 브라우저. 2016년 12월에 클로즈 베타 테스트를 시작해 지금까지 정식 서비스 중이다. 비발디의 옴니테스킹, 사이드 바, 디자인 등을 벤치마킹했다. 크롬보다 로딩속도가 빠르다.
- Android Webview - Android 4.4부터 Webview가 Chromium 기반으로 변경됐다. Android 4.3까지는 AOSP 기반이었다. Android가 오픈소스라서 가장 기본적인 Webview도 크롬으로 대신할 경우 크롬도 공개되어야 하기 때문. 다만, Android에는 포함되어 있지 않아도 넥서스 시리즈처럼 선탑재 개념으로 크롬을 기본 인터넷 브라우저로 해놓는 경우는 많다. Android 4.4에서는 시스템 라이브러리에 내장되어 있어 업데이트가 불가능했는데 Android 5.0부터는 앱으로 분리돼 업데이트를 받을 수 있게 됐다.

- Avast Secure Browser - 안티바이러스 개발사인 어베스트에서 개발한 브라우저. 자사 안티바이러스 설치나 업데이트 시 번들로 설치되는 일이 많다.
- Brave - 파이어폭스 창시자 브랜든 아이크가 개발한 웹 브라우저로 자체적으로 애드블록이 포함되어 있다.
- CCleaner Browser - Gen Digital Inc(구 Piriform) 에서 만든 브라우저. 따로 추가된 부가기능이 기본적으로 탑재되어 있다.

- Comet - 인공지능 검색 엔진를 개발하는 Perplexity가 개발 중인 인공지능 웹 브라우저로, Perplexity 검색 인공지능이 브라우저에 탑재되어 있다.
- Dragon - Comodo에서 보안을 더 강화시킨 버전. 예를 들면 Secure DNS를 컴퓨터 DNS 변경없이 사용할 수 있다. 단 현재는 크롬에서도 Secure DNS를 지원한다. 스킨이 기존의 크롬과 다르다. 윈도우즈만 지원한다. 자매품으로 Firefox 기반으로 만든 Comodo IceDragon도 있다.[6]
- Iron - 사용자의 정보를 수집하는 기능과 구글과 관련된 기능을 전부 제거한 버전이며 광고차단 기능이 들어간 것 외에 추가적인 튜닝이 없다.[7] 이 버전이 얼마나 사용자 정보 유출에 민감한지 네트워크 활동을 예측하여 페이지 로드 성능 개선, 피싱 및 악성코드 차단과 같은 성능이나 보안에 도움이 될 만한 기능을 기본값에서 해제해 두었다. 다른 크롬 기반 브라우저들도 이렇게까지 기능을 제거하지는 않는다. 추가적인 튜닝이 초기에는 정말 전혀 없었으나 이후 자체 Adblocker라든가(설치 폴더 내 adblock.ini을 수정해 쓰며, 업데이트마다 초기화되니 주의), Preview-Thumbs 개수가 크롬보다 더 많다거나 하는 약간의 차이점을 보인다. 때문에 가장 간결한 브라우저로 불린다. Windows, MacOS, Linux 모두 지원한다. 대체적으로 Windows - Linux - MacOS 순으로 업데이트하는 편이다. 딱히 건드릴게 없어서 그런지 업데이트는 빠른 편이다. 그런데 nProtect 게임가드가 실행중일 경우 먹통이 된다. 게임을 하는 도중에는 웹서핑을 하는 게 불가능하다는 것이다. 다른 브라우저는 안 그런데 유독 아이언만 그렇다.
- Sleipnir - 일본 펜릴사에서 만들었다. UI가 일반적인 브라우저와 상당히 다르며, 매킨토시를 쓰는 듯한 미려한 글자 표시를 목표로 만들었다고 한다. 최신 버전은 슬레이프닐 6이다.
- Slimjet - '세상에서 가장 빠른 웹브라우저'라는 캐치프레이즈를 내세우고 있다. 자체적인 광고 차단기를 내장했으며(애드블록과 구문이 호환되기 때문에 사용자 정의 추가가 쉽다는 장점이 있다) 웹페이지 캡처/PDF 저장이나 마우스 제스처, 다중 다운로드 매니저 등 '있으면 편리한 기능'들을 기본적으로 내장하고 있어서 추가 기능의 설치가 거의 불필요하다는 것이 장점이다. 바꿔 말하면 해당 기능들에 대해 부족함을 느낀다면 다른 Chromium 계열 브라우저 대비 장점이 크지 않은 편이다. 한국어를 공식적으로 지원.
- Supermium - ungoogled-chromium을 기반으로 하며 지원이 중단된 Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1에서도 정상적으로 사용할 수 있게 포팅한 브라우저. 버전 122부터 Windows XP, 2003도 지원한다. Widevine L1 인증은 받지 않아 넷플릭스 같은 사이트에서는 문제가 생길 수 있다. 한국어 공식지원.
- 테슬라 자동차 브라우저 - 테슬라 자동차에 내장된 브라우저. 테슬라 차량은 다른 차량들과 달리 iPad Pro 12인치 정도 크기의 차량 제어 및 인포테인먼트용 디스플레이가 달려있다.
- ToGate - 티맥스A&C에서 자사 OS인 TmaxOS를 위해 개발한 브라우저이며, Windows 버전도 존재한다.
- ungoogled-chromium - Chromium에서 개인정보 보호 등의 목적으로 구글과 관련된 기능을 모두 제거했다. 또한 개인 정보 보호와 관련된 몇몇 패치들도 적용됐다. 다만 구글과 관련된 모든 기능을 없앤 관계로 확장기능을 수동으로 설치해야 하고 자동 업데이트 또한 지원하지 않는다.
- Opera 시리즈(中)
- Opera(中) - 버전 15 부터 Chromium 기반으로 제작됐다. 2016년 2월 중국의 백신 개발사인 치후360에 인수됐다.
- 오페라 네온(中 Or Not) - 새로운 미래형 시각적 인터페이스를 목표로 하는 웹 브라우저로 신기한 기능들이 많지만 확장 프로그램 지원이 안 된다.
- 오페라 GX(中) 게이머들을 위한 오페라이며, 게임에 관련된 기능들이 많고 게임 사운드 소리가 난다.
- Vanadium - GrapheneOS에서 기본 제공하는 웹 브라우저. 개인정보 보호에 초점을 두었으며 자체 광고 차단 기능이 있다. WebView도 마찬가지로 Vanadium으로 바꿔버렸다. 다만 GrapheneOS 전용으로만 개발했기 때문에 아직까지는 소스 코드만 제공하고 있다. 추후 Vanadium을 GrapheneOS 외부에서도 이용할 수 있도록 배포할 계획은 있다고 한다.
- Vivaldi - 제작자들이 변해버린 오페라를 대신해 구 버전 오페라의 특징을 계승했다. 다양하고 세세한 설정이 가능하며 크롬의 확장 기능은 그대로 사용할 수 있다.
- Yandex Browser - 러시아의 검색 사이트 얀덱스에서 만든 브라우저로, 카스퍼스키의 안티바이러스 엔진이 내장되어 있다. 모바일 버전에서도 크롬 확장 프로그램 설치가 가능하며 오페라 기반이어서 오페라 확장 프로그램 설치가 가능하며 한국어는 지원되지 않고 초기 설치언어는 영어 아니면 러시아어이다.
- Cent Browser - Cent Studio에서 개발한 웹 브라우저. 2015년 2월 12일에 Chromium 35.0.1916.153부터 시작하여 지금까지 정식 서비스 중이다. Chrome보다 로딩속도가 빠르고 추가된 자체 확장 기능으로 별도의 확장툴이 없이도 원활한 사용이 가능하다. 그외 Purge memory at intervals of minutes(몇 분 간격으로 메모리 제거) 기능으로 장시간, 장기간 사용에도 최적화된 메모리로 사용이 된다.
- Cromite - Chrome에서 개인정보와 관련된 모든 것을 제거한 Bromite의 포크 중 하나로 이 때문에 윕페이지 번역 기능[8] 또한 없지만 광고차단이나 사용자 스크립트, 프록시 설정 등을 지원한다.
- Iridium Browser - ungoogled-chromium과 비슷하게 Google과 관련된 모든 기능을 제거한 브라우저. 단, Safe Browsing과 관련된 기능들은 제거되지 않았다는 것이 주요 차이점이다. (이 기능은 설정에서 비활성화할 수 있다)
- Thorium - Chromium에 코덱, Widevine DRM, 구글 동기화 등 크롬에만 있는 기능들을 추가하고 최적화에 중점을 둔 브라우저. 다만 원인은 불명이나 일부 벤치마크 결과에 의하면 순정 Chromium에 비해 점수가 낮은 편이다.#

이하는 2019년 11월 이전부터 업데이트가 되지 않는 예전 Chromium 기반 웹 브라우저들 목록이다.
- Torch
- 쿨노보(中) - 옛 이름은 크롬플러스. 가장 유명한 버전 중 하나. 2013년 8월 이후 패치가 없는 데다가 개발사인 메이플 스튜디오 자체가 사라져 버린 상태이다.
- 록멜트 - Netscape의 설립자인 마크 앤드리슨이 개발한 소셜 네트워킹 기능에 특화된 브라우저(Flock하고 비슷하다). 페이스북에서 초대받은 일부 사람만 다운받을 수 있었으나, 공개 베타로 전환하면서 누구나 받을 수 있게 됐다. 그래도 실행할 때에는 페이스북 아이디/비밀번호를 묻는다. 윈도우즈와 맥을 지원한다. 야후!에 인수됐고, 2013년 8월 31일자로 웹사이트 및 브라우저 다운로드 서비스가 중단됐다.
- 플록 - 여기서 설명하는 건 버전 3 이상이다. 그 이전은 파이어폭스 기반이다. 트위터같은 소셜 네트워킹 기능에 특화된 브라우저. 윈도우즈와 맥을 지원한다. 2011년 4월 26일자로 더 이상의 지원이 중단되어서 공식 사이트에선 다운로드할 수 없다.
- 스윙 브라우저 - 이스트소프트 계열사인 줌인터넷에서 만든 브라우저로, 2019년 1월 7일 서비스 지원이 종료됐다.
- 닷지크롬 - 국내 ISP 장비의 취약점을 이용해 프록시 없이 매우 빠른 속도로 성평등가족부 및 방송미디어통신심의위원회에 의해 차단된 사이트 접속이 가능하다. 기능 자체는 오리지널 크롬과 차이가 없다. 특성상 안 열리는 페이지가 간혹 가다 나오기 때문에 메인으로 쓰기엔 부적합하다는 평이 많다. 2015년 1월 14일부터 KT 회선에서 워닝 사이트들이 조금씩 막히기 시작했다. KT외의 사용자들도 막혀가고 있어 모두들 절망감을 느끼던 중 2015년 2월 9일 업데이트됐다. 하지만 2015년 3월 12일 SKT/SKB에서 막혔다. 조금씩 막혔던 KT 회선과 달리 갑자기 예고도 없이 막혀서 이례적인 상황이다.
- Coowon Browser - 마우스 제스처, 더블 클릭 닫기 등 일반적인 추가 기능에 웹게임 속도 조절 기능과 멀티 로그인 기능이 있다.
- LG 폴더의 브라우저 - 말 그대로 LG 폴더(LM-Y110)에 탑재된 브라우저. 감압식 터치스크린조차도 지원하지 않는 환경에 맞게 마우스 포인터를 추가했으며, 피처폰에 알맞게 디자인됐다.
- Kiwi Browser - Android 전용 브라우저이며, 크롬 확장프로그램을 설치할 수 있고 모든 웹 페이지에서 다크모드가 지원된다. 다만 브라우저의 인터페이스를 감지하여 다크모드로 변경되는 웹 페이지는 일반 모드 그대로 다크모드가 적용됐으나 업데이트로 해결됐다. 혹시 크롬에서 키위로 갈아탈 유저들을 위해 팁을 알려주자면 북마크는 구글 테이크아웃으로 추출한 다음 키위 브라우저의 북마크에 불러와야 하며, 저장된 비밀번호는 비트워든을 포함한 비밀번호 에드온을 써야 한다.[10] 2025년 1월에 개발중단을 선언했고 대체 브라우저로 Microsoft Edge를 제시했다.
- Osiris - 이론적으로는 크롬보다 3배에서 7배 정도 빠른 브라우저로, 블록체인과 댑스토어와의 호환 구동이 편리하고 광고차단과 HTTPS 업그레이드가 있다. 그러나 어느 순간 부터 사이트가 폐쇄되고 다운로드가 불가능하다.
8. 파생 소프트웨어
8.1. Chromium 임베디드 프레임워크
Chromium 임베디드 프레임워크(Chromium Embedded Framework, CEF)는 Chromium 기반의 레이아웃 엔진을 포함한 오픈 소스 프레임워크이다. 이 프레임워크로 프로그램 안에 Chromium을 넣어서 웹 페이지를 표시할 수 있다.리그 오브 레전드 클라이언트, 월페이퍼 엔진, FC 온라인, Steam 등 많은 곳에서 쓰이고 있다.
.NET에서 쓸 수 있는 CefSharp도 있다. 닷넷의 기본 웹 브라우저 컨트롤인 WebBrowser는 IE7을 사용해 최근 환경에서 사용하기에는 부적합한 면이 많은데, CefSharp을 이용하면 크롬 브라우저를 이용할 수 있다.

Cronet은 Android 앱에서 라이브러리로 사용하도록 제공되는 Chromium 네트워크 스택입니다. Cronet은 지연 시간을 줄이고 앱이 작동해야 하는 네트워크 요청의 처리량을 늘리는 여러 기술을 활용합니다. Cronet 라이브러리는 YouTube, Google App, Google Photos, 지도 - 내비게이션 및 운송 등 수백만 명이 매일 사용하는 앱의 요청을 처리합니다.
Chromium 브라우저에서 네트워크 스택 기능을 담당하는 코어 부분만을 별도로 제공하는 라이브러리다. # C, Java, Kotlin, Python을 지원한다. 커스텀 소켓을 구현해야 할 필요가 없는 대부분의 앱 통신 환경에서는 Cronet 라이브러리가 필수적으로 쓰인다.Android Studio에서 Gradle을 통해 임포트가 가능하고 구글 앱, 쿠키런 등이 이 라이브러리를 사용한다.
HTTP/3, TLS 1.3 등의 최신 기술들을 지원한다.
9. 문제점
- 메모리 사용량이 상당히 심한 편이다. 대부분 이 기반을 쓰는 브라우저는 탭을 여러개 띄워놓으면 수십 GB를 차지한다.

의 [[웹 환경 무결성#|]] 부분을2023년 구글의 개발자들은 클라이언트의 무결성을 증명하는 암호화된 토큰을 사용하는 Web Environment Integrity API를 제시했다. 명목상으로는 신뢰할 수 있는 클라이언트를 통해서 서비스를 제공할 수 있도록 한다고 주장하고 있지만, 사실상 웹페이지 자체에 DRM을 탑재하는 것과 다를 바 없을 뿐만 아니라, 개인 식별에 사용될 수 있다는 문제와 광고 차단 기능을 사실상 광범위하게 제한해버릴 수 있다는 문제가 존재한다.
