1. 개요

춘천의 도심부에 위치한 행정동이다. 행정동 약사명동은 법정동 약사동, 중앙로2가, 중앙로3가, 죽림동을 관할하고 있다.

2. 지명 유래

기존에 존재하던 명칭인 약사동과 주변에 통칭하여 불리던 명동을 합쳐 약사명동이라 하였다.

실질적으로 춘천의 '시내' 라고 불리는 곳의 한 축을 담당하는 곳이다. 중앙로2가의 경우 춘천낭만시장 등 거의 상업지역으로만 구성되어 있다. 중앙로3가는 세무서, 보건소 등의 관공서나, 춘천초등학교, 춘천중학교, 춘천교육문화관 등의 교육시설이 들어서있다.

본래 가연리(街淵里)라 불리는 지역의 일부였다가 일제강점기에 대화정 이정목이라고 불리게 되었는데, 1946년 일제 잔재 청산을 목적으로 이 일본식 명칭을 고치려 하였다. 그때 춘천이 앞으로 발전하려면 이 지역의 진산인 봉의산(鳳義山)을 상징하는 봉황새가 흥해야한다는 생각에 봉황새의 먹이가 지역에 필요할 것이라는 여론이 제기되었고, 그리하여 봉황새의 먹이라고 생각되는 대나무숲을 만들어 주어야겠다는 생각에 이 지역을 죽림동이라 개칭하게 되었다.

춘천시 중심부에 위치하여 지역 상경제 및 문화생활의 중심지로 춘천시의 근현대사를 함께한 소방서 망대를 비롯하여 《겨울연가》 촬영지인 명동거리와 지하상가, 브라운5번가, M백화점, 중앙시장 및 은행, 병원, 세무서, 도서관, 학교 등 다양한 기관 및 상가들이 산재해 많은 시민들이 즐겨찾는 지역이며 접근성이 용이하여 인구이동도 가장 많은 곳으로써 내.외국인 관광객의 방문코스가 되고 있다.
춘천우체국이 있었으나 온의동으로 이전했다.
약사명동 재개발 과정에서 하수관련 시설 정비를 날림으로 해서 문제가 되었다. 2013년 폭우시 하수관련 시설을 날림으로 공사했기 때문에 피해가 났다는 게 거주 주민들의 주장.
약사명동은 전체적으로 구도심에 속해 있기에 인구가 많지 않은 편이지만, 그나마 면적이 넓은 약사동에 대부분의 인구가 분포해있다.
2015년 JTBC 드라마 사랑하는 은동아, 2017년 SBS 수,목드라마 당신이 잠든 사이에 촬영지였다.
