1. 개요

현대자동차의 도색 공정 모습

사물의 외면에 색을 입히는 작업을 말한다. 공정으로서 도장이라고도 한다.

자동차나 선박, 기관차와 같은 중장비를 외면을 칠하는 것을 일컫기도 한다. 중장비에 도색을 할 경우, 부식을 방지하여 수명을 늘려주는 역할을 하기도 한다.[1] 전해질 용액인 바다와 항시 접하고 있는 선박의 경우, 도색이 중요하며 주기적으로 도색을 반드시 해주어야 한다. 총에 색을 입히는 것도 도색이라 일컫는다.

이 외에 많은 사람들이 이용하는 대중교통의 경우 도색을 일종의 도시 디자인이나 브랜딩 차원에서 접근하기도 한다. 때문에 중구난방이었던 시내버스, 택시의 도색을 통일하는 작업을 벌이기도 했다. 대표적인 예시가 디자인서울이다.

사람 손을 많이 타는 로봇류의 장난감들은 다른 장난감들에 비해 도색이 쉽게 까지는 경향이 있다. 특히 합체 로봇.

커스터마이징 게임을 하는 사람들은 도색을 하는 것을 리페인트라고 부른다.

2. 하는 법

스프레이나 페인트를 이용하여 칠하는 것이 일반적이다. 그 후에, 광택 등을 위해 별도의 처리를 하기도 한다. 색연필이나 사인펜으로도 가능하다. ~~할 사람이 있을지는 모르겠지만~~ 지드래곤의 USB앨범이 바로 빨간색 유성매직으로 도색한 물건이다.

군사장비의 경우 고가의 도료가 사용된다. 전투기 등에는 전파흡수물질을 덧칠하기도 한다.

고중량탄두형 전술유도탄

미사일의 경우에는 흰색-검은색의 체크무늬 도색이 활용된다. 미사일 동체가 회전하는지, 회전하지 않는지를 눈으로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 영문으로는 'checkerboard pattern'이라고도 한다. # NASA에서 부르는 명칭은 'roll pattern'이다.

일부 정신나간 음모론 신봉자들은 체크무늬가 일루미나티와 프리메이슨의 상징이라며 북한이 일루미나티의 속국이라는 주장을 펼치기도 한다. 당연히 테스트를 하려면 누구나 필요하기 때문에 대한민국 해성-II도 채택하고 있는 도색 형태이다.

3.2. 열차의 도색

열차의 경우 등급별로 다른 도색을 채택해 차량의 등급을 쉽게 알아볼 수 있게 한다. 한편 SR과 코레일의 관계처럼 운행사업자가 다르면 도색도 다르게 해서 각 회사별로 통일성을 추구한다. 와인 산천이라고도 불리는 120000호대(KTX_산천)의 경우 SRT와의 통일성을 추구했는데, 사실 이 도색은 호남고속선 전용으로 코레일이 주도하여 2014년에 개발한 도색이지만 수서평택선 운행사업자인 SR이 2016년에 설립되고서 회사 이미지 컬러를 버건디로 정한 후 이 차량이 SRT로 임대되며 그대로 SR의 이미지를 나타내게 되었다.

도시철도의 경우 노선색이 상징색이 되므로 노선과 차량의 도색을 맞추는 편이다. 하지만 서울교통공사 광폭형 GEC 초퍼제어 전동차처럼 노선색을 따르지 않고 심미성을 위해 색상을 배열하는 경우도 있다.

같은 노선의 비슷한 스펙의 전동차라도 도입 시기에 따라 미세하게 도색이 달라지는 경우가 있는데, 철도 사진을 찍기 좋아하는 철도 동호인 입장에서는 이러한 도색을 정리하고 탐구하는 것도 덕질중 하나이다.

독일의 경우 대부분의 철도차량들이 빨간색 바탕 혹은 빨간색 치트라인 도색을 하고있는데, 이는 운영사업자인 독일철도공사의 이미지 컬러가 빨간색이기 때문이다. 또한 베를린 BVG가 운영하는 베를린 지하철, 버스, 트램은 노란색 단색, 뮌헨 MVG가 운영하는 뮌헨 지하철,버스,트램은 파란색 단색이며 이외에도 각 도시별 상징색을 쓰는 경우가 많다.

프랑스 역시 파리교통공사가 운영하는 지하철, 버스는 전부 청록색과 흰색을 주 색상으로 사용한다.

영국 런던도 마찬가지로, 모든 지하철 차량은 런던교통공사가 운영하며 빨간색 전두부와 흰색 바탕, 파란색 하단부가 특징인 도색을 쓴다.

다만 높은 비용과 무게 때문에 위와 같은 다양한 도색은 2000년대부터 유로화이트로 대체되기 시작했다. 그 유행이 아직까지도 진행중이다. 이 유행에 대해서는 호불호가 갈린다.

[1] 방청이라 하여 도색 없이 녹방지를 하는 처리가 있긴 한데, 주로 내부 녹방지에 이용되며 외면에는 도색을 이용해 녹을 방지한다. 방청제를 도포한 표면은 보기도 좋지 않고 방청제 피막보다는 도색된 피막이 더 튼튼하기 때문이다.[2] 대한항공의 첫 도장은 일본항공의 과거 도장과 비슷한 흰 바탕과 몇 가닥의 치트라인이 그어진 형태였으며, 현행 도색이 개발된 건 1984년인데 1988 서울올림픽을 앞두고 국적사의 정체성을 확립하는 목적이 가장 컸지만 그 이면에는 앞서 일어난 대한항공 007편 격추 사건의 영향도 있었다. 당시에는 여객기와 군용기가 같은 플랫폼으로 개발되는 일도 지금보다 더 흔했고 무채색 계열의 도장도 비슷하여 오인하는 일도 더 많았는데, 007편 역시 그러한 오해를 받았던 것. 바탕색이 유채색인 이유는 이쪽에 기인한 것으로, 위의 사고 때와 같은 오해를 피하고 순수 민간 비행기임을 알리려는 목적도 숨어있는 것이다.[3] 기존과 동일하게 동체를 파란색으로 도색했으며, 치트라인이 사라졌다.[4] 가장 좋은 예가 아시아나항공. 심리적 안정과 부드러운 이미지를 부여해주는 회갈색 도장은 당시 승무원들의 유니폼과도 일치했으며 심지어 기내 좌석의 색상과도 일치했다. 다만 2기 때부터 적용된 유로화이트는 기체에만 적용된 상태라 유니폼 및 좌석 색상이 기체 색과 따로따로 노는 이도저도 아닌 결과로 만들어 버렸다. 그나마 다행인 건 신도색에도 기존의 회갈색이 동체 하단부와 뒤쪽 색동무늬로 이어져있어 완전히 이 색상을 버리지는 않았다는 점이다.
