'Midnight Sky'는 마일리 사이러스의 정규 7집 Plastic Hearts의 리드 싱글로, 2020년 8월 14일 발매되었다.
2. 상세
지난 앨범의 리드 싱글 Malibu 이후 리암 헴스워스와의 이혼을 겪고, 캘리포니아 산불로 집이 불탔으며, 새 연인이었던 코디 심슨과도 결별하는 등 많은 일이 일어났던 그녀가 오랜 만에 발매한 싱글이다. "난 도망치기 위해 태어났지, 난 누구의 것도 아니야"라는 가사는 특히 근래 마일리를 두고 벌어진 연애사를 빗댄 가사로 이해된다. 그녀는 산불로 말리부의 집을 잃고 공개적으로 이혼을 겪은 상태에서 "남들이 아닌 자기 자신"을 통제하고 싶은 마음이 들었다고 설명했다. 이 노래는 또한 자신에 대한 비판을 두려워하며 망설이는 이들에 대한 위로의 의미를 담았다. 한편 마일리는 가사에 등장하는 "한밤중의 하늘(Midnight Sky)이라는 길"에 대해 모두가 깨어나 각성하는 시간을 의미한다며, 사람들이 원하는 환경을 만들어나가자는 내용을 담았다고 밝혔다.스티비 닉스의 'Edge of Seventeen'를 보고 영감을 받은 곡이라고 한다. 이후 마일리는 'Edge of Seventeen'와 'Midnight Sky'를 매쉬업해 'Edge of Midnight'라는 노래를 만들어 Plastic Hearts에 수록하기도 했다.

오랜만의 리드 싱글인데다가 노래에 대한 평도 워낙 좋았고, 게다가 발매 당시에 두아 리파와 더 위켄드를 필두로 레트로 열풍이 한창이었기에 마찬가지로 레트로 색이 진하게 묻어나는 해당 싱글의 성적에 많은 기대가 모였으나 빌보드 핫 100 최고 성적은 14위로, 10위권 진입에 실패했다. 대신 영국 오피셜 싱글 차트에서는 5위까지 오르며 Nothing Breaks Like a Heart, Don't Call Me Angel에 이어 top 5에 성공했다.4. 뮤직비디오
