슬립낫의 다섯 번째 정규 앨범. 2014년 10월 17일 발매. 제목인 그레이 챕터가 암시하듯, 2010년 사망한 베이시스트 #2. 폴 그레이를 위한 추모 앨범이다. 또한 퍼커션 멤버 크리스 펜이 마지막으로 참여한 스튜디오 앨범이기도 하다.[3]

2. 상세

All Hope Is Gone 이후 무려 6년 만에 발매된 앨범이다. 긴 공백기에도 불구하고, 이 앨범은 빌보드 앨범 차트 1위로 데뷔하며 큰 성공을 거두었다. 이는 슬립낫의 스튜디오 앨범 역사상 두 번째 기록이다.

그러나 밴드 창설 이래로 한 번도 변하지 않았던 멤버 구성에 변화가 생겼다. 베이시스트 폴 그레이는 심장병과 펜타닐 및 모르핀 과다복용으로 인해 사망했으며, 드러머 조이 조디슨은 급성 횡단성 척수염으로 인해 밴드를 탈퇴했다.

폴 그레이가 사망한 이후 라이브에서 베이스를 대신 담당하던 도니 스틸[4]도 앨범 제작에 일부 참여했지만, 가정을 꾸리기 위해 슬립낫에 다시 합류하지 않았다고 밝혔다.

새롭게 합류한 멤버는 앨범 발매 전 2014년 9월 12일에 발표한 〈The Devil in I〉 뮤직 비디오에서 모습을 처음 드러냈으며, 서로 비슷한 삼베 마스크를 착용했고, 정체는 공식적으로 밝히지 않았다.

새로운 멤버들은 2015년 3월에 해고된 드럼 테크니션에 의해 정체가 유출되었고,[5] 같은 해 5월에 공식적으로 베이시스트 알레산드로 벤츄렐라와 드러머 제이 웨인버그가 발표되었다. 그러나 이들이 계속 활동하지는 않는다고 밝혔고, 슬립낫의 상징적인 멤버 번호도 배정받지 못했다. 다만, 이후 6집에서도 활동하게 되면서 사실상 정식 멤버로 자리 잡게 되었다.[6]

2011년부터 시작된 코리 테일러의 목소리 문제는 2013년에 절정에 달했다. 5집 공연에서는 이전보다 나아졌지만, 초창기나 4집 시절의 보컬 스타일과는 차이가 있었다. 시간이 흐르며 보컬 톤이 더욱 부드러워졌고, 이로 인해 메탈코어적인 느낌이 강화되었다. 이러한 변화에 대해 비판하는 이들도 있었지만, 대중성은 오히려 증가했다.

이 앨범의 수록곡들을 라이브로 공연할 때, 숀 크레이언은 백킹 보컬에 참여하지 않는다.

3. 제작 배경

2010년 5월 24일 베이시스트 폴 그레이가 사망한 후, 슬립낫은 폴을 추모하는 공연인 "Memorial World Tour"를 2010년부터 진행했고 2012년부터 "Knotfest"라는 슬립낫 메인의 공연을 진행하기 시작했다. 새로운 앨범 제작은 2013년 중반부터 이야기가 나왔지만 같은 해 12월 12일, 드러머 조이 조디슨이 갑작스럽게 밴드를 탈퇴하고 만다.[7] 슬립낫은 이런 뒤숭숭한 분위기 속에서 새로운 앨범 제작을 시작하게 된다.

기타리스트 짐 루트는 4집과 마찬가지로 앨범 대부분의 곡을 작곡했는데, 코리 테일러는 슬립낫의 앨범 제작에 더욱 집중하라는 의미에서 스톤 사워에서 짐 루트를 탈퇴시켰다.[8]

슬립낫은 2014년 3월에 새 앨범의 녹음을 시작할 것이라고 발표했는데, 당시에는 앨범 제목을 "Vol. 5"라고 불렀다. 시간이 지나고 공식 홈페이지에서 새로운 Knotfest 일정을 홍보하며 새로운 뮤직 비디오와 티저를 공개했다.

2014년 8월 5일 첫 공개한 뮤직 비디오는 〈The Negative One〉이었으며, 뮤직 비디오의 마지막엔 새로운 슬립낫의 로고가 등장했다.

앨범의 첫 번째 트랙이자 2014년 10월 12일 발매된 첫 프로모션 싱글.

숀 크레이언이 읖조리는 인트로로 시작하는 폴 그레이를 위한 추모곡이며, 앨범 발매 직후 진행한 Knotfest에서 〈742617000027〉 대신 인트로로 틀어졌다.

숀 크레이언이 폴 그레이의 장례식에서 폴을 관에 넣고 운구할 때 자신의 머릿속을 맴돌던 음악을 토대로 작곡되었다고 한다.

제목인 "XIX"는 "XX"로 읽으며, 로마 숫자로 19를 의미하기도 한다. 이는 슬립낫이 데뷔한 지 19년이 지났음을 의미하며, 2집 Iowa의 첫 번째 트랙인 〈(515)〉를 연상시키기도 한다.

2015년 10월 5일에 연령 제한이 붙어 있는 뮤직 비디오가 공개되었는데, 반 나체의 여성 둘이 관을 들고 물가에 수장하는듯 한 내용이다.

곡 중간에 등장하는 베이스 솔로는 짐 루트가 폴 그레이를 염두에 두고 작곡한 것으로, 특정 순간에 베이스가 중심이 되는 곡을 만들고 싶었다고 한다.

2014년 8월 26일, 앨범 발매 전 두 번째 싱글로 발매되었다.

뮤직 비디오는 2014년 9월 12일에 발표되었으며, 촬영 전 팬들을 모집해 뮤직비디오를 촬영했다. 영상엔 새로운 멤버들이 등장하며, 5집에서 사용할 새로운 마스크를 공개했다.

뮤직비디오가 꽤나 고어하다. 주 내용은 슬립낫 멤버들이 다양한 방법으로 자살 및 자해를 하는 것으로, 뾰족한 이빨로 양손을 물어뜯는 시드 윌슨, 얼굴 가죽을 마스크채로 잡아뜯는 믹 톰슨, 새로운 멤버들을 휠체어에 묶어두고 칼로 난자하는 기존 멤버들, 개에게 공격당하는 크레이그 존스, 까마귀들에게 쪼이는 크리스 펜,[17] 자폭하는 짐 루트[18]와 코리 테일러, 몸에 불을 붙인 채 목을 거는 숀 크레이언이 나온다.

비하인드 영상에서 뮤직 비디오의 감독을 맡은 숀 크레이언의 제작 비화를 들을 수 있다.

라이브에선 곡의 인트로를 좀 더 길게 시작하며, 알레산드로 벤츄렐라는 2021년부터 2022년까지 공연을 할 때 베이스에 화염방사기를 장착하고 드럼 뒤 무대에서 화염을 발사하는 퍼포먼스를 선보이기도 했다.#

2014년 10월 16일에 앨범의 다섯 번째 프로모션 싱글로 발매되었으며, 2015년 4월 25일에 네 번째 싱글로도 발매되었다.

인트로에 〈The Devil in I〉의 아웃트로가 잠시 흘러나온다. 가사는 얼핏 보면 비극적인 사랑 내용 같지만 코리 테일러는 가사가 밴드 자체뿐만 아니라 음악 산업 전체에 대한 것이라고 밝혔다.[19]

뮤직비디오는 숀 크레이언이 감독을 맡았고, 2015년 6월 9일에 발표되었다. 영상에선 밴드 멤버들과 버려진 건물을 돌아다니는 두 명의 여성을 번갈아가며 보여준다.[20] 또한 숀 크레이언의 새 마스크를 볼 수 있으며, 마지막에 점프 스케어가 나온다.

코리 테일러는 제목인 "회의론자"가 밴드 내에서 모든 상황이 힘들고, 멤버 모두가 침울하거나 부정적인 기분에 빠져 아무것도 할 수 없다고 느낄 때조차 폴 만큼은 그런 어려움에 신경 쓰지 않는 회의적이자 긍정적인 사람이었다는 점에서 따왔다고 밝혔다.
