슬립낫의 정규 3번째 음반. 2004년 5월 25일 발매.
2. 상세
기존 1, 2집과는 헤비함이 많이 사라진 절제되고 안정된 사운드와 메탈코어식 전개가 주를 이룬다. 이는 1, 2집을 프로듀싱했던 로스 로빈슨에서 릭 루빈으로 프로듀서가 변경된 영향으로 보인다. [1] 기존의 헤비한 리프 위에서 성대를 무리하게 사용하며 몰아치던 보컬과 특유의 뒤틀린 감성의 사운드는 이제 거의 찾아보기 어렵게 되었다.앨범 발매 이후 평가는 극명하게 엇갈렸으며, 기존 팬들 사이에서는 부정적인 반응이 주를 이뤘다. 특히 1세대 뉴메탈 팬들의 평가는 극도로 혹독했다. 팬들이 기대했던 슬립낫의 3집은 1집의 광기와 2집 이상의 헤비함이 결합된 형태였다. 앨범 발매 전 상황을 살펴보면, 당시 린킨 파크를 필두로 한 2세대 뉴메탈 밴드들이 차트를 휩쓸며 대중성과 상업성을 강조하던 시점이었다. 이와 동시에 콘, RATM과 같은 1세대 뉴메탈 밴드들이 쇠퇴하면서 코어 팬들의 실망감은 커져만 갔고, 이러한 분위기 속에서 새로 나올 슬립낫의 3집에 대한 기대는 더욱 높아지고 있었기 때문이었다.
그러나 이번 앨범은 특유의 말끔한 믹싱, 멜로딕한 메탈코어, 어쿠스틱 기타 발라드 트랙들로 구성되어 기존 팬들에게 배신감을 안겨주었다. 과거 〈The Heretic Anthem〉을 통해 자신들의 음악성을 대중성에 타협하지 않겠다고 선언했던 슬립낫이었으나, 이번 앨범에서는 기존과는 다른 대중친화적인 음악을 선보이며 팬들의 기대를 저버린 것이다. 이에 따라 평가는 급락했으며, 많은 팬들이 변해버린 슬립낫을 "변절자"라며 등을 돌리기 시작했다. 특히 코리 테일러와 짐 루트를 향해 "이런 음악은 스톤 사워에서나 하라"는 식의 비난이 쏟아졌다.
그럼에도 불구하고 일부 평론가들은 이번 앨범을 긍정적으로 평가하기도 했다. 이들은 이번 작품이 기존보다 더 노련한 슬립낫의 모습을 엿볼 수 있는 앨범이라고 평가했다. 특히 2집 Iowa가 앨범 전반에 헤비한 트랙들만 배치해 중반부부터 다소 지루하다는 지적을 받았던 것과 달리, 이번 3집은 다양한 장르의 시도와 각 트랙마다의 독특한 분위기를 통해 듣는 이로 하여금 지루함을 느끼지 않도록 구성되었다는 점이 호평받았다. 또한, 멤버들의 연주법과 곡 전개에서의 발전, 그리고 새로운 변신을 시도한 코리 테일러의 보컬이 돋보였다는 평가도 있었다.
코리 테일러의 보컬 스타일은 전작들보다 소프트해졌다는 이유로 팬들에게 질타받기도 했으나, 훗날 그의 초기 보컬 창법[2]과 시간이 지나며 악화된 그의 목소리가 주목받으며, 이는 밴드 내에서 보컬을 지키기 위한 최선의 선택이었다는 재평가를 받게 되었다.
또한 1, 2집과 달리 가사에 욕설 사용이 크게 줄어들어 Parental Advisory 레이블이 붙지 않은 슬립낫의 첫 앨범이 되었다. 2007년 인터뷰에서 믹 톰슨은 코리 테일러가 욕설에 의존한다는 비판에 대응하기 위해 이번 앨범에서는 욕설 사용을 피했다고 밝혔다.[3]
발매된 지 14년이 지난 2018년, All Hope Is Gone의 10주년 기념 앨범이 발매된 시점에서도 슬립낫의 4집까지의 앨범 중 유일하게 10주년 기념 앨범으로 재발매되지 않았다.
3. 제작 배경
2001년 2집 Iowa 투어가 끝난 후, 일부 멤버들은 이미 머더돌즈나 스톤 사워 재결성 등 사이드 프로젝트에 참여하기 시작했다. 이런 상황 속에서 슬립낫은 2003년, 로스앤젤레스에 있는 "더 맨션" 스튜디오에서 프로듀서 릭 루빈과 함께 3집 녹음을 시작했다. 하지만 작업 초기에는 밴드의 생산성이 크게 떨어졌다. 리드 보컬인 코리 테일러는 녹음 당시 음주 문제를 겪기도 했다.[4] 그럼에도 불구하고 멤버들은 새로운 앨범을 위해 작업을 이어갔다.앨범 발매 전에 수록곡 〈Pulse of the Maggots〉를 공식 웹사이트를 통해 무료 다운로드 형식으로 공개했다. 이 트랙은 2004년 3월 30일 단 하루 동안 제공되었으며, 이를 통해 슬립낫의 새로운 월드 투어인 "The Subliminal Verses World Tour"의 시작을 알렸다. 이후 2004년 5월 4일, 〈Duality〉가 첫 번째 공식 싱글로 발매되었고, 2004년 5월 25일에 3집이 정식 발매되었다.

앨범 발매 전 2004년 5월 4일, 3집의 첫 번째 싱글로 선발매되었다.
숀 크레이언이 야구방망이를 들고 커스텀 퍼커션에 달려 있는 맥주통을 후려치는 퍼포먼스로도 유명한데, 2019년부터 2023년까지의 라이브에선 야구방망이에 불을 붙이고 퍼포먼스를 진행했다. 2024년부터는 다른 퍼커션 담당인 마이클 파프에게도 해당 퍼포먼스를 시킨다.[5]
뮤직 비디오는 2004년 3월 27일 촬영되었다. 촬영 장소는 슬립낫의 고향인 아이오와주 디모인에 위치한 한 팬의 집으로, 당시 재건축 예정이었던 곳이다. 영상에서는 밴드가 집 안팎에서 수십 명의 팬들에게 둘러싸여 공연하는 모습이 담겼으며, 팬들이 창문과 벽을 부수면서 집이 점차 파괴되는 장면이 연출된다.
슬립낫은 실제 팬들을 모집해 뮤직비디오를 촬영했다. 촬영 전 제작진은 팬들에게 난폭하게 행동하되 집을 파손하지 않도록 요청했지만, 흥분한 팬들은 이를 무시했다.(...) 촬영이 끝난 후, 집주인은 촬영 중 손상되거나 파괴된 물건과 설비의 목록을 제시하며 밴드에 보상를 요청했다. 이에 로드러너 레코드 측은 약 5만 달러를 보상금으로 지급했다고 한다. 또한 제작진은 팬들에게 대못이 박힌 마스크를 착용한 크레이그 존스 주변을 특히 조심하라고 지시했다고 한다.

앨범의 두 번째 싱글. 조이 조디슨과 폴 그레이가 작곡했으며 코리 테일러가 작사를 맡았다. 코리는 당시 애인이였던 스칼렛 스톤에 대한 사랑의 노래이며, 여자를 쫓는 스토커의 입장에서 쓰여졌다고 밝혔다.
뮤직 비디오는 숀 크레이언과 토니 페트로시안이 감독을 맡았는데, 타임 랩스와 슬로우 모션이 결합되어 고독감을 극대화시키는 독특한 촬영 기법과 예술적인 연출이 특징이다. 주인공이 중간에 착용하는 가면은 일명 "구더기 마스크"로, 숀 크레이언이 팬들을 위해 디자인한 마스크이며 이 앨범의 표지로도 사용되었다. 또한 영상 속 슬립낫 멤버들은 본인들의 얼굴을 본뜬 데스마스크를 착용하는데, 이 곡을 연주할 때는 멤버들이 데스마스크를 착용하고 공연하기도 한다.
