오늘 같은 달콤한 날에는 그리는 어디든

뉴 질 스윙[2]하면 관련 있는 곡이 있는데, 바로 유영진이 작곡한 S.E.S.의 'I'm Your Girl'. 'I'm Your Girl'의 도입부를 들어보면 유영진의 나레이션 중에서 "Funky New Jill Swing~" 이라고 말하는 것을 들을 수가 있다. 그래서 그런지는 몰라도 어떤 리스너는 'Sunny Afternoon'이 S.E.S.의 'S.Ⅱ.S (Soul To Soul)'의 밝은 버전이라고 이야기한다. 이는 Red Velvet의 음악적 행보가 S.E.S.와 어느 정도 접점이 있다는 걸 보여준다.

또 부드럽고 성숙한 느낌의 벨벳 컨셉의 'Automatic'의 밝은 버전 같다는 평가도 있다. 이 곡에서도 레드와 벨벳 컨셉이 섞인 듯한 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 인트로 보컬에서 벨벳 컨셉 특유의 보컬 특징인 허밍과 애드립이 많이 들리며 멤버 개개인이 나른하게 부르는데 훅 부분에서는 레드 컨셉처럼 밝게 부른다. 또한 랩도 중간에 삽입되어 있어 두 컨셉이 섞였다는 의견이 상당하다.

2015년~2016년 SM이 자주 활용했던 딥하우스, 트로피컬 하우스 장르의 곡이다.

아프리칸 리듬을 사용했는데, Red Velvet은 데뷔곡 행복도 바로 아프리칸 리듬~~쿵쿠덕덕~~의 곡이었다. 그리고 컴백 전 인스타그램에 올라온 연습실 댄스 파티 영상 BGM에도 아프리칸 리듬이 사용되었다. ~~아프리칸 리듬 전문 그룹~~

예리와 아이린이 자신을 가장 잘 드러내는 곡이라고 밝혔다. 예리는 이 곡의 사운드가 신선하고 가사가 달달해서 자신을 포함한 10대 후반 소녀의 마음을 잘 드러내기 때문이라고 했다. 아이린은 너무 밝지도 잔잔하지도 않은 독특한 사운드가 자신을 편안하게 해주고 리듬을 즐기게 하기 때문이라고 했다.

"The Red"의 'Day 1'처럼 조이가 좋아하는 첫사랑 느낌의 달달한 곡이라고 한다. 조이는 귀여운 레드의 느낌과 성숙한 벨벳의 느낌을 모두 갖춘 곡이라 자신의 성격과도 비슷한 것 같다고 했다. 참고로 이 곡들은 모두 모노트리의 황현 작곡가의 작품이다. 후렴구에서 낮게 깔리는 남성 코러스가 황현의 목소리.

7. 평가

izm에서는 별 셋을 주면서 전체적으로 호평했고 f(x)의 핑크 테이프 같은 역작이 나오길 기대한다는 리뷰를 남겼다. 아이돌로지에서는 간결한 구조가 가진 미학을 충실히 반영했다는 평, 적당한 무게감과 속도감을 모두 놓치지 않았다는 평 등 훌륭한 팝 곡이라는 긍정적인 평들이 주를 이루었다. 부정적인 평가로는 같은 소속사 선배 걸그룹의 화살 당기는 노래의 잔상이 있다고 하며 오히려 The Velvet 때보다 더 위기가 아니겠느냐고 한다. 그리고 자신들의 정체성과 색깔을 고민해 보라고 한다.

그러나 빨간 맛 이전까지 대중에게 가장 많은 사랑을 받은 곡이며, 덕분에 2017년까지 음원 사이트 연간 차트에 이름을 올리고 있다.

2017년 한국대중음악상 최우수 팝 노래 부문에 후보로 선정되었다.

2020년 드림웍스의 애니메이션 영화인 트롤: 월드 투어에 Red Velvet이 K-POP 트롤로 참여하여 이 앨범의 타이틀 곡인 러시안 룰렛이 수록되었다.

2021년 1월부터 TikTok에서 유행하기 시작한 'The ViVi Trend'[5]로 주목을 받아 1월 초까지만 해도 하루 평균 5~6만회 정도였던 뮤비 조회수가 1월 말에는 20만회 가까이 나올 정도로 오르기도 했다.

7곡 수록되어서, 공식적으로 미니앨범/EP로 분류하지만 주요 해외 음원 서비스에서는 앨범으로 분류되어 있다.[6]
