1. 개요

동배간 처리 방식, Peer to Peer의 줄임말로 중앙 서버를 거치지 않고 클라이언트 컴퓨터끼리 직접 통신하는 방식을 통칭한다. 일반적으로 컴퓨터의 쌍방향 파일 전송 시스템을 가리키지만 P2P라고 해서 꼭 파일 전송에 쓰이는 것은 아니다.[1] 중앙서버 없이 컴퓨터와 컴퓨터 사이를 연결해 주며, 프로그램 엔진만 만들면 되기 때문에 매우 간편하게 파일을 전송할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 처음에는 느린 인터넷 속도 때문에 잘 사용되지 않았으나 인터넷이 점차 발달할수록 파일 전송 속도가 빨라짐에 따라 굉장히 널리 사용되게 되었다.

한국 최초의 P2P 프로그램으로는 소리바다가 있으며, 그 이전에도 미국에서 냅스터라는 프로그램, 프랑스에는 P2P 기술을 활용한 PeerTube가 있고 일본에서는 위니라는 프로그램이 존재했다. 비트토렌트, 이뮬, 당나귀, 프루나도 이 범주에 들어간다.

P2P라는 용어 자체가 불법공유와 과도하게 연결된 탓에 매우 어두운 이미지를 가지게 되었지만, P2P 기술 자체는 법적으로 전혀 문제가 없으며 사용자 컴퓨터의 자원을 어느 정도 나눠서 쓴다는 점에서 서버 성능의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대단히 유용한 기술이다. 게임 서버에서도 사용된다. Windows Update와 Steam에도 P2P와 비슷하게 다른 유저로부터 다운로드 하는 기능이 있다. 어도비 플래시에서도 비디오를 더 빨리 로딩하기 위해 지원한다.

P2P는 크게 두 가지가 있다. 비슷한 성능을 가진 PC끼리만 연결된 형태인 순수 P2P(Pure P2P) 그리고 PC끼리의 인터랙션을 원활하게 해주는 서버가 개입되는 형태인 혼합형 P2P(Hybrid P2P)이다.

2. 장점

중앙서버가 없기 때문에 중앙서버가 변조되거나 해킹에 노출될 가능성 자체를 없앤다. 따라서 대부분의 블록체인 기반 암호화폐는 P2P 방식을 채택하고 있다.
중앙서버나 개별서버에 걸리는 부하를 줄이거나 사용자가 분담할 수 있도록 하여 서비스 제공 비용을 낮출 수 있다. 대부분의 P2P 파일 공유가 여기에 해당된다.

3. 단점

모든 클라이언트가 서버 역할을 겸함으로 자신의 IP주소가 다른 클라이언트에 노출된다.
피어 수가 적으면 전송 속도가 떨어진다.
데이터 처리와 통신 작업의 분담으로 인해 원활한 서비스를 위해서는 클라이언트 컴퓨터의 성능이 높아야 한다.
블록체인 서비스의 경우 51% 공격에 취약하다.
NAT 아래에 설치된 내부 네트워크에 존재하는 피어의 경우 P2P 프로그램이 직접 통신할 수 없어 홀펀칭이 필요하고, NAT 종류에 따라 라우터 설정을 변경해야 할 수도 있다. 대부분의 가정용 공유기에는 UPnP 기능이 있어서 가정에서는 큰 문제는 아니다.

4. 활용 예시

4.1. 게임 서버

P2P의 가장 큰 특징은 별도의 서버와 클라이언트가 없으며 모두가 서버이고 모두가 클라이언트가 된다는 점이다. 각각의 피어는 플레이어 모두에게 신호를 주고 받는다. 적은 수의 플레이어가 대량의 토큰을 주고 받는데 가장 유리한 방식으로, 실시간 전략 시뮬레이션이나 격투 액션 게임에 가장 잘 어울린다. 던전앤파이터가 이 방식을 파티 구성 순간부터 그 파티가 깨질 때까지 적용시켜 활용하고 있다.

리슨 서버와 달리 호스트가 방폭을 해도 게임이 계속 유지된다는 장점이 있다. 그리고 호스트에 트래픽이 몰리는 문제도 해결되기 때문에 리슨 서버 방식보다 피어 투 피어 방식이 더 선호되고 있다. 스타크래프트의 배틀넷 등에서는 이 방식이 락스텝 동기화 알고리즘과 맞물려 필수적으로 사용되고 있다.

각각의 피어가 모두 서로간에 신호를 던지고 받는데, 싱크가 유지될 때까지 대기할 필요가 있는 게임들이 있다. 대전격투게임이나 전략시뮬레이션 게임이다. 이들은 회선이 대단히 빨라야 한다. 데디케이티드 서버는 이 방식을 쓰려면 가급적 세계 곳곳에 데디케이티드 서버를 구축해야 하는 문제가 있다. 피어 투 피어 방식을 쓰면 이 문제가 쉽게 해결된다. 데디케이티드 서버와의 네트워크 거리가 고려되지 않아도 되기 때문이다.

P2P는 한 세션에서 게임을 하는 유저들끼리 서로에게 서버가 되어주는 방식이다. 게임 회사는 다만 서로 매치메이킹을 할 수 있도록 매칭서버만 호스팅해주면 된다. 서버에서 연산이 가능하도록 설비에 돈을 투자하지 않아도 되니 게임회사야 좋겠지만 게임을 하다가 말고 누군가 나가면 1대1이면 게임 자체가 폭파되고 다 대 다의 경우엔 연결을 초기화하면서 렉이 걸리게 된다. 다른 게임과 달리 던전앤파이터에서 파티플레이 중 파티원 중 한명이라도 인터넷이나 컴 사양이 안 좋으면 파티원 전체에게 영향이 가는 것[2]과 스타크래프트 1에서 가끔 게임을 하다말고 누가 나가면 소위 겹핑이 걸려서 게임 전체가 느려지는 경우가 바로 이것 때문이다. 단점은 이뿐만이 아니며 가정용 인터넷과 서버용 회선은 그 급부터가 달라서 P2P는 본질적으로 한번에 많은 인원을 수용하는 게임에는 적절하지 못하다. P2P 회선 방식은 개개인마다 모두 엮어줘야하기 때문에 파티원이 늘어날수록 필요한 회선 수가 2차함수꼴로 늘어나기 때문. 2인이면 양방향으로 1개지만, 3인이면 3개, 4인이면 6개, [math(n)]명이면 [math(\frac{n(n-1)}{2})]개가 필요하다. 6인만 되어도 4인에 비해 2배가 넘는 회선이 필요하고 8인이면 5배 가까이 필요하다.

이때문에 P2P시스템을 고집하는 던전앤파이터는 2014년 최초의 레이드 안톤 레이드를 기획할 때, 다른 게임의 레이드처럼 다인 파티 레이드로 기획하였으나, 실제 구현은 4인 파티 단위로 쪼개져서 던전을 클리어하는 방식으로 구현되었고 이는 이후 레이드에도 계속 동일하게 적용되었다. 사실상 앞으로도 P2P방식을 고집하는 이상 고칠 수 없다.

다만 던파의 사례의 경우 기가비트 인터넷 회선이 보급되고 100mbps 회선이 VDSL(10mbps급) 수준으로 완전히 퇴출되고 사용자 비중이 낮아지면 국내 한정으로는 이론상의 대역폭을 계산하였을 때 10인까지는 서비스 가능하다. 플레이어간의 데이터 송수신에 W만큼의 대역폭을 요구하는 회선(established P2P network connection, 피어 간 네트워크 연결)이 있다고 할 때 4인일 경우 (4*3/2)*W = 6W가 되고, 10인일 경우 (10*9/2)*W = 45W가 된다. 아직까지는 100mbps 회선에서도 정상적인 4인팟 플레이가 가능하므로 6W < 100mbps라 할 때 이보다 처리 가능한 대역폭이 10배 넓은 1000mbps 회선이라면 9배 많은 처리량인 45W만큼은 감당이 가능할 것이다. 사실 가정에서 동시에 인터넷을 사용하는 기기나 프로그램은 던파가 돌아가는 컴퓨터 한 대 뿐이 아님을 감안하고, 전송속도 저하와 지연시간 등을 대비하기 위한 마진을 감안하면 정말로 안정적인 1Gbps 환경이라면 10인 이상도 P2P가 가능할 수는 있다. 이제 막 시험 서비스가 실시되는 가정용 10Gbps 환경쯤 되면 사실상 P2P의 단점은 의미 없다. 핑이나 레이턴시, 통신경로 면에서 가정용 회선은 서버급보다야 모자라긴 하겠지만 그걸 감안해도 10Gbps 정도 대역폭에 50ms 이하의 레이턴시[3]이면 어지간히 사용자가 폭주하는 대규모 서버가 아닌 이상에야 서버용으로 돌려도 된다. 사실 마인크래프트나 기타 동접자 수에 제한이 없는 P2P방식 게임서버를 돌려보면 알겠지만 가정용 기가비트 수준만 되어도 동접자 100명 미만으로는 그럭저럭 할 만 하다. 웹 서버(API 서버 포함)의 경우 동접자 5000명 미만은 가정용 Gbps 회선으로도 돌릴 만하다. 약관 위반이긴 하지만.

P2P 공유 프로그램을 이용한 불법공유가 퍼지면 퍼질수록 오프라인 컨텐츠 판매는 타격을 입게 된다. 특히 이 시스템의 최대 피해자는 음반업계로 MP3 음악파일은 불과 몇 MB에 안 된다는 장점으로 인해 P2P 프로그램 등의 인터넷상에서 광범위하게 유포됨으로써 음반업계의 수입이 줄고 기존 CD 음반시장이 축소되는 등의 타격을 입게 된다.

결국 음반업계는 음반저작권협회를 통해 법적 대응에 나서 2000년대 중반 들어 법원은 세계 각지의 P2P 프로그램에게 잇따른 운영중지 판정을 내리고, 대한민국도 예외없어 2005년 저작권법 개정을 계기로 인터넷상에서의 상용 음악파일의 업로드가 금지되고, 네이버나 싸이월드, 다음 등에서는 돈을 주고 BGM을 살 수 있는 BGM 판매서비스를 시작하게 된다.

결국 수많은 P2P나 웹하드 프로그램 운영회사들은 저작권료를 포함한 수입을 벌어들이기 위해 대거 유료화를 하게 되고, 경우에 따라서 해당 저작물에 금칙어 설정 및 법적 처벌(특히 고소)를 가함으로써 저작물 업로드 및 다운로드에 대한 규제가 심해졌다. 이로 인해 현재 P2P 프로그램, 특히 대한민국에서는 웹하드와 더불어 불법 공유와 야동보급소의 온상으로 낙인찍히게 된다.

2000년대 말에 P2P 중계 서버가 단속당해 대부분 폐쇄된 데다가 현재 검색되는 서버도 대부분 단속용 낚시서버이므로 자료공유가 거의 불가능해져서 이용자들은 비트토렌트나 웹하드로 이동했다.

현재 저작권법 단속에 걸리는 다운로더들은 모두 P2P에 연루되었을 확률이 매우 높다. P2P 특성상 다운로더가 업로더를 겸하는 경우가 많기 때문. 단, 자신의 아이디로 공유 자체를 전혀 하지 않을 경우는 예외다.

2014년 하반기에 대원미디어가 사업확장 및 불법공유를 대비하여 P2P 6체에 천억원대 소송을 건 결과가 나왔는데, 위디스크, 파일노리의 민사소송에 승리하고 형사소송을 준비중이라는 소식이 전해졌다. 파일조와는 판권타협으로 다운로드 컨텐츠 제휴를 시작한다고 밝혔다.

P2P는 특성 상 이용자의 신원(IP주소) 노출이 매우 쉽기 때문에 불법 이용자 적발도 쉬운 편이다. 게다가 다운로드만 하더라도 업로드가 같이 됨으로 일반 다운로더에 비해서 법적인 책임이 커지기 때문에 P2P를 통한 불법적 이용은 자제하는 것이 좋다.
