1. 개요

소스 엔진의 기능중 하나이나, 본 문서에서는 게리모드의 밈으로써 설명한다.

2. 설명

상술하듯, 본래 Nextbot 이란 소스 엔진에서 네비게이션 매쉬를 이용해 맵의 경로를 파악해 작동하는 NPC를 뜻한다. 이는 하프라이프 2의 알릭스 밴스 처럼 길을 파악해 플레이어를 따라오는 npc들을 위해 있는 기능이었다.

게리모드 에서는 NextBot 자체가 하나의 생성 카테고리로 분류되는데, 이는 다양한 맵들을 더 잘 인식하고 개선된 퍼포먼스를 보여주도록 해주는 AI 애드온이다. 때문에 후술할 2D 판떼기가 아닌, 정상적인 모델링을 가진 넥스트봇들도 많다.

유저들 사이에서는 무조건 플레이어를 쫒아온다는 점을 추격전 요소에 활용하고자 2D 이미지가 플레이어를 찾아와 죽이는 공포 에드온을 만드는데 활용되었는데, 2013년경에 만들어진 소닉 더 헤지혹의 패러디 캐릭터 Sanic Hegehog 에드온이 이런 형식의 시초로 불리며, 그 이후 2020년대 에서는 셀레네 델가도 로페즈의 몽타쥬 버전[1]##, 오붕가와 같은 공포짤로 만들어지면서 더 인기를 끌었다.

특히 2022년 5월, 유튜버 Rogurt이 오붕가 Nextbot 에드온을 활용해 만든 you cant hide 라는 영상이 대히트를 치면서 본격적으로 더 유행을 타기 시작했다. 어디에 숨든 끈질기게 플레이어를 쫒아오는 집요함과 특유의 비주얼이 시너지를 일으켜 신선하게 무섭다는 반응을 이끌어냈다. 덕분에 넥스트봇 추격전류 콘텐츠 자체의 재유행을 이끌고 밈화까지 시켜버렸다.

대부분의 넥스트봇들이 굉장히 시쓰러운 소리를 내면서 접근하는데[2], 무시무시한 속도로 다가온다는 점, 그리고 게리모드 특유의 휑한 분위기의 맵에서 덩그러니 놓여있는 조잡하게 생긴 사진 딸랑 한 장이 쫓아오는 것이 불쾌한 골짜기를 연상케 해 뭔가 웃기면서도, 한편으로 언제 어디서 튀어나올지 모르는 심리적 공포 때문에 어지간한 호러게임보다 더욱 공포스럽다는 말이 많다.

이후에는 백룸의 엔티티로 같이 엮이거나[3] 로블록스 등지에서도 쓰이며 게리모드나 소스 엔진 외의 게임에서도 사실상 '플레이어를 추적해 죽이는 2D 이미지 적 npc'를 통칭하는 의미로 확장되었다.

이것 말고도 유머성 넥스트봇으로는 It has to be this way를 틀면서 달려오는 스티븐 암스트롱이라든지, 베터 콜 사울의 오프닝 테마를 틀면서 달려오는 사울 굿맨이라든지, BIZCOCHITO를 틀면서 달려오는 로살리아 [4]라든지, 유명 유튜버 IShowSpeed, 아메리칸 싸이코의 주인공 패트릭 베이트먼 [5], 콴데일 딩글 (Quandale Dingle)[6], 범죄도시의 마석도 #, 사이버 펑크 엣지러너의 루시나 쿠시나다, 심지어 케인(인터넷 방송인) 등등 최근에 나온 별별 밈을 다 넥스트봇화 시키고 있다.

4. 특징

속도가 매우 빠르다.
어디에 숨든 플레이어를 무조건 추적한다. 플레이어가 어디에 있든 바로 그 위치로 오더니 순식간에 찾아내 죽이는데, 문을 닫아 놓아도 잠깐의 시간만 벌 뿐 결국은 통과한다.[8]

그렇다고 높이 점프하거나 공중부양하면 유저와 동일한 높이로 뛰어오르는 무시무시한 각력을 자랑한다. 만약에 중간에 벽이 막고있다면 계속 점프하는데 공중부양으로 플레이어와 동일한 높이까지 올라오기 때문에 결국에는 벽이 얼마나 높던지 간에 뛰어넘어 온다. 거기다가 프롭들을 용접해서 바리케이드를 세우더라도 엄청나게 힘이 강해 용접까지 다 풀어버리기 때문에 바리케이드로 막아도 얄짤없이 죽는다. 오히려 분해된 프롭들에게 맞아 죽을 수도 있다. 별도의 모드없이 도망치려면 자동차나 보트를 타서 이동하는 것이 좋다. 게다가 인식범위가 맵 전체이기 때문에 아무리 도망가도 무조건 추적해온다. 정확히는 NextBot이 맵의 구조와 플레이어의 위치를 정확히 파악하고 있기 때문에 숨는 것이 무의미한 것이다.
다만 모든 맵을 인식하는 것은 아니기 때문에 내브메쉬(Navmesh)가 없는 맵에서 NextBot을 소환하면 이 맵을 배우지 못했다는 경고문과 함께 제자리에 멍하니 서있기만 한다[9]. 물론 접촉하면 즉사하는 것은 그대로다.

멀티플레이의 경우 가장 가까운 플레이어를 추적한다.
기본적으로 닿으면 즉사한다. SANIC을 포함해 이를 기반으로 개조한 오붕가 등의 넥스트봇들은 게임 시스템상 접촉 피해가 1억으로 책정되어 있다. 때문에 후술할 콤바인 포탑처럼 특수한 방식으로 죽이거나, 체력을 1억 이상으로 높인게 아니라면 공격을 버틸 수가 없다.
무적 판정이므로 절대 죽일 수 없다. 유일한 방법은 게리모드에서 Z키를 눌러 소환을 취소하는 것 뿐이다. 일반적인 플레이어의 어떤 공격으로도 죽지 않는다.[10] 이는 히트박스가 아예 없는 탓인데, 예시로 총으로 쏘는 경우 자세히 보면 어떤 무기로 공격하든 몸통을 그냥 통과해버린다.
일부 에드온은 플레이어뿐만 아니라 NPC들까지 추적해서 죽여버린다. 시민, 콤바인 솔저 등의 인간형 NPC 역시 저항도 못하고 죽어버리고, 폭발성 무기로만 죽는 스트라이더나 건쉽조차 파괴한다. 거기다가 대부분의 NPC들을 잡아먹는 바나클조차 NextBot을 먹기는 커녕 오히려 죽는다. 다만 콤바인 포탑은 NextBot이 공격 대상으로 삼기는 하지만, 콤바인 포탑은 기본적으로 쓰러지지 않으면 죽지 않는 개체다보니 NextBot은 포탑을 죽어라 패기만 한다. 비슷한 이유로 드랍쉽, 텐타클 같이 무적 개체는 NextBot도 죽이지 못한다.
만약 플레이어를 죽이지 않도록 설정하면 맵에 NPC가 없을 때 맵 어딘가에 숨는다. 플레이어가 찾아내면 수줍은 듯이 다른 곳에 숨는다.

5. 기타

사실 비슷한 형식의 공포 게임으로 2014년작 공포의 숲의 선례가 이미 있지만 이런 형식의 시초가 2013년 SANIC 에드온 이었기 때문에 오히려 NextBot이 더 빠르다.
