1세대 리메이크 작품에 처음 등장한 인물이므로 포켓몬스터 레드·그린에는 등장하지 않는다.
이웃집 친구이자 라이벌 그린과 함께 오박사로부터 포켓몬과 포켓몬 도감을 받고 포켓몬 트레이너가 되어 여행을 떠나게 된다. 관동지방을 여행하면서 관동의 체육관 배지를 얻고 악의 조직인 로켓단과 싸워나가며 트레이너로서 성장해 나간다. 긴 접전 끝에 결국 로켓단을 혼자서 해산시키고 8개의 배지를 전부 얻어 석영고원에 있는 포켓몬 리그에 도착. 사천왕들과 한발 앞서 챔피언이 된 라이벌 그린을 모두 이겨 관동지방의 새로운 챔피언이 된다.

챔피언이 된 이후엔 4섬에서 로켓단에게 포획당하고 있는 얼음 타입 포켓몬들을 구하기 위해 싸우고 있는 사천왕 칸나와 조우한다. 칸나와 협동하여 포켓몬들을 구해낸 뒤, 1~7섬에 남아있는 로켓단 잔당들을 전부 몰아낸다. 그리고 특수한 힘을 가지고 있는 루비와 사파이어를 서유석에게 전달하여 호연지방과의 관계를 구축한다.

3. 캐릭터 역사

기존에는 레드·그린 시절 혹은 블루 버전 개발 단계에서 여주인공의 선택지가 있었고, 그 여주인공으로 디자인되었으나 용량 확보 실패 및 개발 기간 단축 문제로 삭제된 주인공이라고 알려져 있었다. 그런데 스기모리 켄의 트윗에 의하면 해당 카더라는 그냥 루머. 파이어레드/리프그린 여주인공의 원안이라고 알려진 캐릭터는 공략집을 낼 때 주인공과 라이벌 이외에 등장할 제3의 인물이자 가이드 역으로 새로 디자인했던 캐릭터[1]이며, 리메이크판에서 여주인공을 추가할 때 그 캐릭터를 의식해서 만든 것이라고 한다. 즉 블루는 1세대부터 존재했으나 게임 속에선 3세대 와서 처음 탄생한 캐릭터라고 볼 수 있으며 실제 첫 여주인공 타이틀을 가진 것은 2세대에 등장하는 크리스이다.

픽시브에서는 '블루'라는 이름이 나오기 전까지 당시 디자인을 1세대(초대) 리프라는 태그로 투고해 온 경향이 있었다. 포켓몬스터 SPECIAL에서는 이 디자인으로 초기부터 블루라는 이름으로 활약하였으며, 리메이크 발매 이후 포켓몬스터 파이어레드·리프그린의 디자인으로 변경하고 나서도 블루라는 이름을 계속 사용하였다.

3.1. 리프와 블루는 동일인물인가?

결론부터 말하자면 알 수 없다. 일단 공식에서는 파이어레드/리프그린의 여주인공은 리프, 레츠고 시리즈에 등장한 NPC는 블루로 확실하게 구분하고 있다. 그러나 리프와 블루가 한 가지 매체에서 함께 등장하여 구분된 적은 없고, 이에 팬덤에서도 어떻게 받아들여야 할지 혼란스러워하고 있는 상황이다.

포켓몬스터 초대 시리즈였던 적/녹에선 여주인공이 등장하지 않았고 리메이크인 파이어레드/리프그린에서야 정식으로 1세대의 여주인공이 등장하였다. 당시엔 디폴트 네임이 공식화되지 않았기에[2] 팬들 사이에서 부르는 명칭도 일정하지 않았고 만화판 포켓몬스터에서 '미도리'라는 이름으로 등장하기는 했으나 공식화되지는 않았다. 차후 스기모리 켄이 그녀의 디폴트 네임이 리프라는 뉘앙스의 트윗을 하였으나 이 당시 공식화된 것은 아니었다.

이후 2018년 6월에 슈퍼 스매시브라더스 얼티밋 트레일러에서 여성 포켓몬 트레이너가 파이어레드/리프그린 여주인공의 모습으로 등장했고, 2018년 10월 6일 코토부키야에서 '리프 with 꼬부기'의 공식 피규어 제작이 발표되면서 처음으로 '리프'가 공식 이름으로 채용되었다. 이때까지만 해도 팬들은 마침내 '리프'가 공식 이름이 되었다는 반응이었다.

하지만 2018년 11월 16일 발매된 레츠고 시리즈에서 리프의 모티브가 된 '소녀'와 디자인이 유사한 트레이너가 '블루'라는 이름으로 등장하면서 다시 혼란이 발생하게 된다. 당시 팬덤에서는 "공식 이름이 리프에서 블루로 바뀐 것이고, 디자인도 바뀐 것"이라고 받아들이는 사람들이 생겨 크리스와 금선과 마찬가지로 이 둘이 동일인물인지 아닌지에 대한 논란이 일어난 것이다. 일본에서는 두 캐릭터를 다르게 분류하는 것으로 의견이 모였으나 국내에서는 공식 명칭이 바뀐 쪽으로 의견이 모여 팬들 사이에서도 의견이 갈리는 양상을 보였다.

그러나 이후 2019년에 발매한 포켓몬 스케일 월드에서 리프라는 이름으로 나온 것에 이어서 동년, 2019년 포켓몬 카드 게임에서는 블루로 등장한다. 2020년에 포켓몬 마스터즈에서는 재차 '리프'의 이름을 갖고 등장하며, 2021년 포켓몬 에볼루션즈에서는 블루로 등장한다. 또, 2024년 12월 17일에 출시된 포켓몬 카드 게임 Pocket의 확장팩 환상이 있는 섬에서는 또다시 블루가 아닌 리프의 트레이너 카드로 출시되었다. 리프에서 블루로 명칭이 변경되었다 생각한 국내 팬덤을 포함한 각 팬층에서 혼란이 발생했다.

상황이 이렇다 보니 팬들 사이에서도 리프와 블루를 온전히 다른 인물로 취급해야 하는지, 동일인으로 취급해야 하는지에 대해 논란이 끊이지 않는다. 크리스와 금선 때와는 다르게 둘이 같이 나온 적이 없으니 동일인으로 봐야 한다는 시각도 있고, 공식에서 레츠고 출시 이후 파이어레드/리프그린의 여주인공을 블루라고 부른 적이 단 한 번도 없으니 별개의 인물로 봐야 한다는 시각도 있다. 확실한 건 어느 한쪽이 절대적으로 옳고 반대쪽이 절대적으로 틀렸다고 할 수는 없다는 것이다. 실제로 나무위키에서는 문서가 하나로 통합되어 있으나, 픽시브 백과사전에는 리프 문서와 블루 문서가 따로 분리되어 있다. 사실이 불명확하므로 각자 납득이 가는 방향으로 적당히 받아들이는 수밖에는 없다.

다만 제작진들이 레츠고 시리즈의 블루에게 1세대의 '소녀' 내지는 포켓몬스터 블루의 정체성만 부여한 것은 아니며 3세대의 리프의 캐릭터를 계승하고 있다는 것도 확고한 사실이다. 대표적으로 블루의 시그니처 포즈와 패션은 3세대의 리프를 모티브로 만들어진 것이다.

다만 작품마다 다른 모습과 이름으로 등장시키면서도 이에 관해 정확한 확답을 내놓지 않고 있고, 비슷한 문제를 가지고 있던 크리스와 금선도 별개의 인물로 확정되는데 많은 시간이 걸렸던 만큼 제작진이 팬들이 관심을 기울이는 만큼 본 사안에 대해 크게 문제의식을 느끼고 있지 않다고 할 수 있다.[3]
