한국 시각 2017년 6월 5일 WWDC17에서 발표된 macOS 버전으로, macOS Sierra의 다음 버전이다. OS X Yosemite 10.10과 OS X El Capitan 10.11의 관계처럼 전작 macOS Sierra 10.12를 보완한 버전이다.

이름은 시에라네바다 산맥 중에서도 해발 9,000피트(약 2,700m) 이상의 고산 지대, 이른바 '하이 시에라' 지대에서 따왔다.

3.1. 기술적 특징

Apple의 새로운 파일 시스템인 APFS가 기본값이 된다.[2]

H.265를 사용할 수 있다. Intel 6세대 이상의 CPU를 장착한 모델부터 지원한다.

머신 러닝을 돕기 위해 Core ML이 적용되었다.

SIP(시스템 무결성 보호)가 더욱 강화되었다. 2017년 8월 17일 기준, 베타에서 시스템을 건드리는 프로그램이 동작하지 않거나, 제한적으로 동작하고 있다.

펌웨어 무결성 체크
2017년 10월 1일 기준으로 이전까지는 펌웨어가 업데이트되지 않아도 Apple에서 그냥 넘어갔는데, 이번 macOS High Sierra부터 펌웨어 변조 방지 모듈을 집어넣고 펌웨어를 1주일에 한 번씩 체크한다.

5. 기타

2017년 10월 7일 기준 정상적인 설치가 불가능하다는 오류와 함께 High Sierra를 설치할 수 없는 문제가 속출하였으며 2010년 초기형 Mac부터 2017년에 나온 MacBook Pro까지 제품 연식을 가리지 않고 나타났다고 한다.

2020년 11월에 공식 지원이 종료되었다. 현재 사용 가능한 앱은 Safari나 노트패드 정도를 제외하면 많지 않다.

[IR] Initial Release. 기기 출시 당시 최초 탑재.[2] 그래서 macOS High Sierra를 쓰는 Mac의 SSD를 macOS Sierra 이전 OS를 쓰는 Mac에 연결하면 인식하지 못한다. Windows에서 MacDrive나 Paragon HFS+ 같은 것을 돌려도 아무 반응이 없다.[3] 만일 Apple에 정식 등록한 개발자라면 $599에 Sonnet 사의 보급형 Thunderbolt 3 eGPU 섀시와 RX580 그래픽카드로 구성된 개발자 키트를 구입할 수 있다.[4] 베타 버전 기준으로 MacBook의 내장 스크린에는 그래픽 가속이 불가한 등 Windows에서의 eGPU 사용에 비해 여러 제한이 존재한다.
