• 유니버설 픽처스와 모타운이 공동 제작했다.

• 1977년 7월부터 12월까지 뉴욕 퀸즈에서 촬영되었다.

• 카메오로 출연한 맨 인 블랙 2를 제외하면 마이클 잭슨의 생전 유일한 장편 극영화 출연작이다.

• 퀸시 존스가 찰리 스몰스와 루터 밴드로스의 노래들을 편곡하는 작업을 감독했다. 퀸시 존스는 이 영화를 계기로 마이클 잭슨과의 인연이 시작되었다.

• 제작 당시 역대 뉴욕에서 촬영된 영화 중 가장 제작비가 높은 영화가 되었는데, 시드니 루멧이 감독으로 발탁된 주요 이유도 스튜디오가 제작비를 아끼기 위해 물색하던 도중 루멧 감독이 '제시간에 예산 범위 내에서 촬영을 마치는 감독'으로 소문이 나있어서 였다고 한다. 그래서인지 루멧 감독이 자신의 저서 <영화를 만든다는 것>에서 회고한 바에 따르면 뉴욕에서 촬영할 당시 일정상의 제약 때문에 상당히 애로점이 많았다고 한다. 세계무역센터 광장에서 촬영한 에메랄드 시티 시퀀스[3]는 바람이 너무 많이 불고 일정까지 촉박해 짧게 찍을 수밖에 없었고, 항구에서 찍은 붉은 조명 시퀀스는 조명 실수로 인해 초안보다 짧아졌는데 항만청에서 추가 촬영 기회를 주지 않아 재촬영도 못한 채 축소된 분량을 영화에 실을 수밖에 없었다고.
