2. 특징

Lion에 이어 iOS의 많은 부분을 OS X으로 옮겨왔다. 동일한 사용자 경험을 위해 몇 가지 응용 프로그램이 추가되고 이름이 바뀌었다. iChat을 대체하는 메시지(Messages)라는 새로운 응용 프로그램을 이용해 iOS 기기들과 iMessage 대화가 가능하며 iCal은 캘린더(Calendar), 주소록은 연락처(Contacts)로 이름이 바뀌는 식이다. Apple 메일에서 메모(Notes)를 분리했고 iCal에서 미리 알림(Reminder)을 분리하는 등 iOS와 기본 앱 구성이 비슷해졌다. 또한 운영체제 레벨에서의 트위터/페이스북 API 지원, 알림 센터 통합, iCloud 지원 확대도 추가되었다. 그 외에도 Apple에게 있어 점점 비중이 늘어나고 있는 중국 시장을 겨냥해서 중국 인터넷 서비스와도 통합하였다. 이때부터 신규 버전 개발 주기도 1년으로 단축되어 iOS와 똑같아졌다.

한글 기본 서체도 Apple SD Gothic Neo로[1] 변경되었다. 지긋지긋한 AppleGothic에서 벗어났다! WWDC12에서 발표한 가격은 전년도의 OS X Lion보다도 더 저렴한 $19.99. 이렇게 싸게 푸는 것을 보면 전년도의 Mac App Store에서 디지털로 판매한 것이 역대 최고 판매량이었다는 말이 거짓은 아닌 것으로 보인다.

보안성을 향상시킨다는 명목 하에 게이트키퍼(Gatekeeper)라는 상당히 충격적인 기능도 들어가 있다. 설치할 수 있는 응용 프로그램에 제한을 두는 기능인데 세 가지 옵션이 있다.

2번에서의 "확인된 개발자"는 바로 Apple 개발자로 등록한 사람을 의미하며 응용 프로그램을 배포할 때 개발자마다 다르게 주어지는 ID를 심어서 배포하면 위에서 말한 "확인된 개발자가 만든 응용 프로그램"으로 인정받을 수 있다. 확인된 개발자가 되려면 Apple에 개발자로 등록을 해야 하는데 이를 위해선 Apple의 처음 한 번의 승인 절차를 거쳐야 하고 매년 $99를 내야 한다. 물론 개발자 확인을 받으면 대부분의 경우 Mac App Store에 응용 프로그램을 업로드하겠지만 라이선스 문제(GPL 등)로 Mac App Store에 응용 프로그램을 제출하지 않을 수도 있으므로 완전히 의미가 없는 시도는 아니다. 맬웨어를 배포하면 당장 개발자 식별자를 블랙리스트에 추가하면 되긴 하니까 보안성 향상도 있긴 할 것이다.

이 옵션의 기본값이 2번이기 때문에 기존 OS X 사용자들은 다소 혼동을 느낄 수 있다. 소비자의 입장에서는 당연히 설정을 바꾸면 되긴 하지만 해당 기능에 대해 충분한 공지를 받지 못한다면(그리고 어쩌면 옵션 변경이 가능한 것을 모를 수도 있다면) 필연적으로 응용 프로그램 설치에 제약을 받는다.[3] 개발자가 Apple에 개발자 등록을 하는 것 자체가 금전적 손해 등을 불러오므로 환영받는 정책은 아니라고 얘기도 있는데 iOS에서의 App Store의 성공을 보면 또 그렇지만도 않다. 사실 App Store는 굉장히 성공한 방식이며 개발자가 딱 본인 능력에 맞게 정당하게 평가를 받는 시장이다. 개발자 입장에선 오히려 반겨야 하는 부분인 것. 특히 Apple의 의도대로 App Store 방식이 PC 시장에도 완전히 적용이 된다면 개발자 입장에선 복돌이 걱정은 별로 안해도 된다.[4][5] 소비자 입장에서도 1번 혹은 2번으로 설정했을 때 보안 측면에선 상당히 유용한 기능임은 확실하다[6]. 3번으로 설정을 변경하는 방법은 시스템 환경설정 → 보안 및 개인 정보 → 일반 탭에서 '다음에서 다운로드한 응용 프로그램 허용' 옵션을 '모든 곳'으로 변경해주면 된다.

2013년 3월 14일 OS X 10.8.3이 출시되었다. Safari가 업그레이드되었고 늘상 그래왔듯이 보안 강화를 위한 업데이트였다. 또한 Windows 8 부트캠프를 지원한다.

2014년 5월 기준으로 최신 버전은 10.8.5이다.

2015년 11월 19일에 공식 지원이, 2016년 8월에 iTunes 지원이 종료되었다.

[1] 산돌커뮤니케이션에서 제작한 산돌고딕 Neo1을 변형한 버전. iOS 5.1에 들어간 그것과 같다.[2] 최신 macOS에는 이 옵션이 없다. 대신 실행할 프로그램을 우클릭-열기를 누르면 된다.[3] 사실 2번 상태에서 실행되지 않는 앱을 우클릭->열기 하면 경고창을 무시하고 앱을 실행시킬 수 있는 버튼이 생긴다.[4] 물론 이제 시작인 만큼 이 정책은 먼 미래에 빛을 보게 될 것이다.[5] 하지만 Apple의 샌드박싱 정책이 깐깐하기 때문에 iOS처럼의 발전을 하기엔 엄청 많은 시간이 걸릴 것으로 예상된다. 스마트폰과 컴퓨터류가 필요로 하는 앱의 종류는 다소 다른 면이 있고 샌드박싱 정책으로는 가상머신(wmware 등)조차 등록할 수 없다.[6] Microsoft가 Windows Vista에서 처음 선보인 UAC가 사용자에게는 상당히 욕을 먹었지만 대부분의 컴퓨터 전문가들은 UAC를 켜는 것을 권장했던 것과 같은 맥락으로 볼 수 있다.
