해즈브로의 My Little Pony 프랜차이즈의 일부로, 미국의 해즈브로 스튜디오(해즈브로의 TV 프로그램 제작부서 격)가 각본, 프로그램 판매 등을 맡고, 캐나다 회사 DHX 미디어의 밴쿠버 소재 애니메이션 스튜디오[1]에서 제작을 맡았다. 미국에서는 Discovery Family(옛 The Hub)[2]에서 방송했다. 총 방영 기간은 2010년 10월 10일부터 2019년 10월 12일까지 총 9개의 시즌과 외전 이퀘스트리아 걸즈 시리즈 총 4편과 메인 극장판을 2017년에 개봉했었다.

한국에선 2014년 투니버스에서 4월 말~7월 중반 동안 시즌1을 틀어준 뒤 9월 중반~11월 초중반까지 시즌 2를 방송했으며, 2016년 중하반기부터 시즌 3까지 내보냈다. 그 후 시즌 7부터는 디즈니채널로 방송사가 옮겨졌다.

다채로운 포니들이 모여 사는 마법의 땅 ‘이퀘스트리아’. 오로지 마법 능력을 키우는 데만 몰두하던 공부벌레 유니콘 트와일라잇 스파클은 스승인 셀레스티아 공주로부터 매우 중요한 임무를 부여받습니다.

바로 “책장 속에서 그만 나오고 친구를 사귀어 보라”는 것이었죠!

로렌 파우스트가 총괄 프로듀서(Exec. Prod.)로서 2기 중반까지 프로그램을 쭉 이끈 바 있다. 심지어 여는 장면 끝 부분에 "Developed for Television by"로 이름이 박혀있기도 하다.[4] "Created by"는 아니다. TV 프로그램과 별개로 4세대 장난감을 기획한 쪽은 따로 있을 거고, 지금까지 TV 프로의 크레딧에서 확인된 '캐릭터 디자이너'만 해도 다섯 명 정도다. MLP가 처음 출시된 이래 1980년대 중반에 몇몇 애니메이션 작품이 나왔고, 이후 1990년대 초반에 My Little Pony Tales, 2fac7e8년대에 OVA 작품 몇 편이 나오긴 했지만, 그렇다고 FIM이 이들의 직접적인 속편인 건 아니다. 그러나 파우스트가 어릴 적에 MLP 장난감을 갖고 논 적 있고, 80년대 중반 작품을 즐겨 본 적이 있다고 밝힌 적이 있는 만큼 어찌 보면 덕업일치일지도. 심지어 포니 장난감을 가지고 놀면서 만든 설정을 사용하기도 했다니...[5] 이외에도 이전 세대에 대한 언급이 간간히 등장했다.

여아들을 겨냥하고 만들어진 작품이지만 남녀노소 인기가 많다. (북미권에서는) 성인 남성과는 전혀 멀면서, 동시에 여자 어린이들의 로망인 조랑말이 소재이지만, 역동적작품으로서이 도드라지는 비주얼, 등장 캐릭터의 입체적인 성격, 제작진과 팬층 사이의 긴밀한 상호 관계, 그리고 순진해 보이면서도 시청자가 의외로 깊이 고찰할 수 있는 주제의식[6] 덕분에 컬트적인 인기를 끌고 있다. 등장 캐릭터가 전부 동물을 데포르메한 형상인지라 퍼리 쪽에서도 높은 지지도를 얻고 있으며, 인터넷을 돌아다니다 보면 이미 모에선을 맞은 그림이나 적절히 인간화한 그림들을 많이 찾아볼 수 있다.

어도비 플래시를 사용하여 제작되었는데, 시간이 지나면서 제작진이 장난 삼아 실사 촬영 장면을 가끔 끼워넣었다. 외에도 미키 마우스 애니나 루니 툰 등에서 볼 법한 개그도 끼어 있다. 2017년 극장판의 제작에 사용할 목적으로 툰붐 하모니(Toonboom Harmony)란 소프트웨어를 도입했으며, 이후 특별편인 Rainbow Roadtrip에서도 사용했다.

넷플릭스의 오리지널 시리즈 : '토이 우리가 사랑한 장난감들' 시즌 4 3화에서 마이 리틀 포니 장난감이 다뤄지면서 로렌 파우스트와 우정은 마법 애니메이션의 뒷배경도 소개되었다. 아무래도 1983년부터 있던 장난감이라 45분여 시간 중의 후반 10분여밖에 다뤄지지 않지만 로렌 파우스트의 어린 시절의 팬레터 등등 귀중한 이야기들로 가득하다.

초기 두 에피소드를 제외한 나머지 에피소드의 시간 전개 순서가 완전히 뒤죽박죽이다. 옴니버스식 전개 방식인지라 제작 시간을 아끼고자 에피소드 여러 개를 동시에 만들면서 먼저 완성된 것들을 먼저 방영했기 때문이다. 시간대를 바로잡으려는 용자가 몇몇 등장하긴 했지만 미완성 상태이다.

이상하게 작붕 이 많기로도 유명하다.

2019년 10월쯤, 마지막 에피소드 방송 전에 테스트 애니메이션이 유출되었다는 내용이 올랐다. 제목은 <My Little Pony Adventures>(한 동영상). 또, 그 전에 <My Little Pony Show Bible>이 유출되었다는 글도 올랐다.
