1. 개요
어셔의 싱글이며 그의 4집 앨범 Confessions의 첫 싱글로 2004년 1월 10일에 발매되었다.[1] 당대 전성기를 누리던 래퍼 루다크리스와, 이 곡을 만든 프로듀서이자 크렁크 음악을 대표하는 거물 Lil Jon이 피쳐링했다. 어셔의 명실상부 대표곡으로 2004년 전 세계에서 가장 크게 성공한 싱글이며 2000년대를 통틀어 가장 성공한 노래 중 하나이다. 또한 마성의 BGM으로 2010년대까지 예능에서 댄스 배틀 테마곡으로 자주 사용되었으며 이로 인하여 가장 인지도가 높은 2000년대 노래 중 하나로 꼽힌다.[2][3]2. 상세
Crunk 음악 및 남부 힙합 전성 시대의 시작을 대표하는 노래이며 2004년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서 1위에 올랐다. 어셔의 첫 번째이자 유일한 연말 차트 1위 곡이기도 하다. 빌보드 핫 100에서는 무려 12주 연속 1위를 했던 대히트곡이었다.이 곡과 다음 싱글 "Burn"의 대성공으로 어셔는 1964년의 비틀즈 이후 정확히 40년 만에 연말차트 1, 2위를 동시에 차지하게 되었다. 이 곡의 대성공은 2004년이 어셔의 해가 되는데 아주 큰 영향을 주었다.
이 곡의 대히트로 인해 Crunk의 하위 장르인 Crunk&B가 대유행을 했는데, Crunk&B는 크렁크에 컨템퍼러리 R&B를 더한 것으로, 시에라와 크리스 브라운이 대표 주자였다. 이러한 노래들의 프로듀서는 노래에서 소리지르는 사람인 릴 존이 담당했으며 이 이후 5년간은 남부 힙합과 크렁크가 큰 인기를 끌게 된다. 그러나 2008년부터는 레이디 가가 등의 일렉트로니카 아티스트들이 등장하여 크렁크가 쇠퇴하고, 남부힙합의 계보는 릴 웨인을 거쳐 트랩으로 완전히 넘어가게 된다.

빌보드 R&B/힙합 차트에서 2004년 3월 첫째 주부터 4월 넷째 주까지 8주 연속 1위, 빌보드 핫 100에서 2004년 2월 넷째 주부터 5월 셋째 주까지 12주 연속 1위를 기록했다.2004년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서 1위, 2004년 빌보드 R&B/힙합 연말 차트에선 2위, 빌보드 핫 100 2000년대 총결산 차트에서 2위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에선 16위에 올랐다.
[1] 원래는 정식 싱글 발매 전에 분위기나 보자는 식으로 인터넷에 살짝 흘렸다가 폭발적인 인기로 인해 정식 싱글 발매가 결정된 곡이었다. 이렇다 보니 어셔의 Confessions 앨범을 들어보면, 저런 클럽뱅어 곡은 Yeah! 단 한곡 뿐이며, 앨범 내에서도 가장 이질적인 곡이기도 하다.[2] 이 노래의 제목을 잘 모르더라도 이 노래의 전주만 들려주면 젊은 세대까지 거의 모든 사람들이 다 알 정도이다. 이 노래는 나온지 20년이 다 되어가는데도 노래 자체의 인지도가 상당히 높은 편이다.[3] 결정적으로 이 노래가 나와서 세계를 휩쓸 때 어셔가 인기가요에 내한 출연한 적도 있어서 한국에서의 인지도에도 도움이 된다. 어차피 세계적인 히트곡이었기 때문에 시청률이 그렇게 높지 않은 인기가요에 출연한다고 한국에서의 이 노래 인지도에 큰 보탬이 되는 일은 별로 없었지만, 지금으로 치자면 올리비아 로드리고나 더 키드 라로이, 릴 나스 엑스 이상급의 압도적인 히트를 치는 가수가 인기가요에 출연한 격이다. 따라서 계속 회자되면서 이후 세대에게 인지도를 높이는 게 크다.[4] 한국 예능 트렌드가 2000년대 후반 리얼 버라이어티로 바뀌면서 더이상 댄스배틀은 보기 힘들어졌지만, 그전까지 연애편지, X맨, 천생연분 등의 예능들은 무조건 댄스배틀을 깔고 갔다.
