1. 개요

1975년 2월 24일 발매된 엘튼 존 밴드의 싱글이다. 필라델피아 소울 색채가 강한 경쾌한 소울 곡이며, 미국의 테니스 선수이자 엘튼 존의 오랜 친구이기도 한 빌리 진 킹에게 바치고 있다.[1] 곡 제목은 빌리 진 킹의 소속 프로팀 '필라델피아 프리덤스(Philadelphia Freedoms)'에서 가져왔다.[2]

2. 녹음

빌리 진 킹은 엘튼 존을 바비 릭스와의 성 대결(Battle of the Sexes) 경기가 열리기 2주 전인 1973년 9월, 프로모터 제리 페렌치오가 로스앤젤레스에서 연 파티에서 만났다. 빌리 진 킹은 1971년에 Your Song을 들은 이후로 앨범들을 모두 구매할 정도로 열성 팬이었는데, 이 파티가 엘튼 존을 위한 것이라는 걸 알게 되며 기뻐했다. 축구와 크리켓, 테니스 등 각종 스포츠를 좋아한 엘튼 존도 평소에 빌리 진 킹을 만나고 싶어 했다고 한다.[3] 이후 급속도로 친해진 두 사람은 1974년 여름, 차에 타고 공연장으로 가던 중 엘튼 존이 빌리 진 킹에게 곡을 쓰겠다고 말했고 빌리 진 킹은 곡 제목으로 '필라델피아 프리덤스'가 어떠냐고 제안했다.[4]

엘튼 존은 1974년 8월 미국 콜로라도주 네더랜드에서 운영되었던 레코딩 스튜디오 '카리부 랜치'에서 정규 9집 Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy를 작업하고 있을 때 버니 토핀에게 작사를 부탁한 뒤, 곡을 작곡하고 밴드와 함께 녹음했다. 엘튼 존은 당시 필라델피아 소울 음악을 좋아했기에 곡도 필라델피아 소울 풍으로 만들었다고 밝혔다.[5] 하지만 버니 토핀은 엘튼 존에게 테니스에 관한 곡은 못 쓰겠다고 말했기 때문에 가사 내용은 아무런 의미가 없다고 밝혔다.[6]

배리 화이트와 포 탑스, 아레사 프랭클린, 휘트니 휴스턴 등 다양한 뮤지션들과 작업을 한 것으로 알려진 편곡자이자 프로듀서 진 페이지가 이 곡에서 현악 편곡을 맡았다. 진 페이지는 《Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy》의 수록곡 Tell Me When the Whstiles Blows에서도 현악 편곡을 맡았다.[7]

《Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy》를 작업했을 때 쓴 곡이지만 싱글로 발매하려고 쓴 곡이라서 앨범에 수록하지 않았다. 이후 1995년 머큐리 레코드와 1996년 로켓 레코드에서 발매된 《Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy》 CD 리마스터반에 보너스 트랙으로 수록되었다.[8]

3. 발매

백업 밴드 엘튼 존 밴드 이름으로 싱글로 발매했으며, 엘튼 존 밴드 이름으로 발매한 유일한 싱글이기도 하다. 미국에서는 MCA 레코드를 통해 1975년 2월 24일 발매했고 영국에서는 DJM 레코드를 통해 2월 28일 발매했다.[9] 미국 빌보드 핫 100 1위, 캐나다 1위, 뉴질랜드 2위, 호주 4위 등 기록하면서 세계 각지에서 큰 성공을 거두었다. 빌보드 핫 100에서 1위에 오른 네 번째 곡이 되었고, 1975년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에서는 3위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에선 192위를 기록했다. RIAA 기준으로 미국에서 100만 장 이상의 판매고를 올리며 플래티넘 인증을 받았다.[10] "with love to B.J.K. and the music of Philadelphia"라고 빌리 진 킹에게 바치는 문구를 싱글에 담았다.[11]

싱글 표지는 엘튼 존과 백업 밴드 멤버들의 모습을 담았다. 엘튼 존 왼쪽에 서있는 인물은 전직 베이시스트 디 머리(1946~1992)이고, 오른쪽에 서있는 인물은 드러머 나이절 올슨이다. 디 머리 아래에 있는 인물은 기타리스트 데이비 존스턴이고, 나이절 올슨 아래에 있는 인물은 퍼커셔니스트 레이 쿠퍼이다.[12]

싱글 B면에는 1974년 11월 28일 매디슨 스퀘어 가든 공연에서 존 레논과 함께 부른 비틀즈 곡 I Saw Her Standing There의 라이브 음원이 수록되었다.[13] 이 음원은 1981년 3월 싱글로 발매되었고 영국 40위, 아일랜드 13위를 기록했다.[14] 1976년 라이브 앨범 Here and There의 CD 재발매반에도 수록되었다.

엘튼 존과 버니 토핀의 작사/작곡 협업 25주년을 기념한 1991년 헌정 앨범 Two Rooms에는 홀 앤 오츠의 커버곡이 수록되었다.[15]

1974년부터 자주 불렀다.[16] 1992년 순회공연부터는 피아노를 일렉트릭 피아노 음으로 변환하고 즉흥 연주를 덧붙여 길게 연주하기도 했다.
