1. 개요
United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa, 유럽-아프리카 공군은 미합중국 공군의 주요 사령부(Major Command)로, 유럽과 아프리카에 배치되어 있는 모든 공군 전력을 총괄한다. 사령관은 공군 대장이 보임된다.2. 역사
미 공군의 유럽 배치는 제2차 세계대전 중 1942년부터 영국에 배치된 제8공군에서 유래된다. 제8공군은 칼 스패츠, 제임스 둘리틀 등이 지휘해 독일을 쑥대밭으로 만든 부대이다. 이후 유럽전략공군이 설치되어 독일 본토 항공전을 지휘했다.전쟁이 끝나고, 미 육군항공대가 공군으로 독립하게 되면서 유럽 주둔 공군의 지휘를 위해 유럽공군사령부가 설치되었다. 1946년 당시 유럽공군은 항공기 2,000대와 75,000명의 인력을 보유하고 있었다. 그리고 소련이 베를린을 봉쇄하자 유럽공군의 주도로 베를린 공수작전을 실시하게 된다.
이후에도 냉전 동안 소련의 공군과 전면으로 맞부딫치면서 유럽을 지키는 역할을 수행해 왔다. 냉전 이후에는 세르비아 폭격 등에 투입되는 등 여러 역할 변화를 겪었고, 아프리카사령부의 창설 후에는 아프리카사령부의 공군 구성군으로서의 역할을 겸하게 되었다.
본부는 독일 람슈타인 공군기지[1]에 위치해 있다.
현 사령관은 제임스 B. 헤커 공군 대장으로 공군대학장을 맡던 중 대장 진급과 함께 부임했다.
