1.1. 긍정적 평가

흥미로운 배경 설정
'종족 대표 선수들이 경기를 하여 우승자가 마테리온을 차지한다.'는, 축약하여 서술해서 그렇지 꽤 신선하고 깔끔한 설정과 스토리여서 전반적인 전개가 매끄러우며 2기와는 달리, 개연성에 큰 문제가 없다.

등장인물 간 케미
캐릭터들 서로의 활발한 상호작용으로 누가 누굴 어떻게 생각하고 있는지, 관계가 어떤지를 알 수 있고, 재미요소까지 생겨난다. 이를 통해 진행이 지루해질 수 있는 가능성을 봉쇄할 수 있었다. 원본을 이미 여러번 봤다면, 원본 인물들과 비교하는 재미도 덤으로 느껴볼 수 있다.

인상 깊은 연출들
가이가 강제로 DV7이 되는 장면, DV1에게 가방C가 부서지는 바람에 이성을 잃은 리우가 냅다 총을 쏘는 장면, 런닝맨에게 압도당해 결국 늙은 얼굴을 완전히 드러내고 만 챠밍골드가 광기에 휩싸여 기를 흡수하는 장면, 그리고 신인류가 되고 싶다는 욕망에 마테리온만을 갈망하며 소울트리 위로 올라가다가 결국 마테리온 폭발의 여파로 아래로 떨어지며 절규하는 장면 등, 아동 대상 애니메이션에선 보기 드물게도 상황을 극대화시켜 심각성을 강조하는 연출이 채용되었다. 특히 챠밍골드와 관련된 것들은 오금이 저린다는 평가를 받는다.

1.2. 부정적 평가

캐릭터간 분량 조율 실패
초중반엔 그럭저럭 균형잡힌 분량 분배를 하는 모습을 보였으나,[1] 중후반으로 갈수록 점점 분량이 강캐인 리우, 쿠가, 미요, 가이로 몰빵되기 시작하더니 후반엔 마칸과 샨도 함께 독식하기 시작하면서 비약적으로 롱키, 포포, 팔라, 그리고 나머지 DV7들이 많이 나오지 못했다.[2]

스토리 진행 속도
소수의 시청자들의 의견인데, 파트 2에서 바로 단체전으로 들어오고 한 명씩 등장할 줄 알았던 DV7 멤버들이 한꺼번에 등장한다는 등, 차라리 파트 1과 파트 2를 시즌별로 쪼개서 방영했으면 좋았을 거라며 비판하는 사람들도 있다. 이건 상술했듯이 소수의견인 데다, 사람마다 진행 속도의 차이를 느낄 수 있기 때문에 단순 참고용으로 보는 게 바람직하다.

모호한 타임라인
작품의 핵심적인 과거 사건들의 시점이 '천 년 전'이라는 막연한 기간으로 통일돼있어 설정오류로 의심되는 부분이 다수 존재한다. 가장 큰 의문은 "천 년을 살아온 챠밍골드가 왜 울쿠스의 존재를 전혀 인지하지 못했는가?" 하는 점이다. 작중 등장하는 울쿠스의 석판과 고대 영웅들의 기록을 종합해 보면, 천 년 전 마테리온 전쟁 당시 울쿠스가 이미 한 차례 깨어났을 정황이 매우 짙다. 챠밍골드 역시 마테리온 전쟁 시기의 인물임을 고려하면, 그가 울쿠스의 존재나 위험성을 전혀 몰랐다는 것은 설정 오류로 비춰질 소지가 다분하다. 만약 이 설정을 정당화하기 위해 '울쿠스가 깨어난 시점은 천 년 전보다 훨씬 더 먼 고대의 일'이라고 가정할 경우 "천 년 전 대지의 균형과 조화를 송두리째 뒤흔들었던 거대 사건인 마테리온 전쟁이 발발했을 당시, 세계의 위기에 반응해야 할 울쿠스가 왜 아무런 움직임 없이 잠잠했는가?"에 대한 추가적인 설명이 필요해진다. 결과적으로 제작진의 안일한 설정이 작품 전체의 개연성을 해치는 요소가 되었다고 볼 수 있다.

X맨 관련 설정 구멍

승점 계산 오류
가이는 감옥 탈출(개인전)과 열차 탈출(팀전)에서 각각 승리하여 총 2점을 확보한 상태였다. 따라서 리우와 함께 공동 1위여야 하나, 작중에서는 1점으로 표기되었다.[3] 피라미드 추격 레이스 당시 포포의 일곱명 전원 진출법 설명에서 리우와 팔라의 승점이 갑자기 3점으로 뻥튀기되었다.
불필요한 레이스 개최
팀 배정이 끝난 당시 가이는 다음 경기 결과와 상관없이 결승 진출이 확정된 상태였다.[4] 따라서 챠밍골드가 굳이 가이를 위해 위험한 '피라미드 추격 레이스'를 열 명분이 부족하다. 차라리 승점 0점인 롱키, 포포를 도와주려 했다면 모를까.
전개를 위한 캐릭터 지능 희생
피라미드 레이스에서 가이의 의심스러운 정황[5]이 많았음에도 미요를 제외한 멤버들은 가이를 단 한 번도 의심하지 않았다. 다른 멤버들을 서로 의심하던 모습과 대조적이다.

1.3. 총평

장점과 단점이 공존하지만 장점이 단점을 덮어버린 시즌. 비중 문제는 아쉬운 부분이긴 하나, 멤버간의 케미, 깔끔한 기승전결, 흥미 있는 떡밥 풀이 등등이 이를 보완해준다. 전체적인 완성도와 팬들의 선호도 모두 좋고, 후술할 시즌 2가 전 시즌보다 떨어지는 완성도로 인해 호응을 이끌지 못했다는 점과 여러 가지 문제점으로 팬들의 외면을 야기했다는 점에서 사실상 시즌 1만 봐도 무방하다. 이후 설정오류로 비판받은 것을 감안하면 더욱 그렇다.

2.1. 긍정적 평가

확장된 세계관
지금까지 그저 관중석에서 경기를 관람하기만 했던 풀룰루족의 역사와, 그 형태를 띠고 있는 정령들, 포스링과 새로운 종족 등이 추가되어 더욱 다양한 스토리를 진행시킬 수 있었다.

개성있는 캐릭터 디자인
파트 2에서 등장한 캐릭터들은 신종족이라는 것과 시너지를 일으켜 저마다의 개성이 뚜렷하다.

2.2. 부정적 평가

개성이 부족한 신 캐릭터
파트 1의 단점으로 '신 캐릭터의 대다수가 풀룰루족이라는 점'이 지적된다. 풀룰루족은 다수의 배경 엑스트라를 표현하기 위해 단순하게 디자인 되어 외형적인 특색이 떨어지는 편이다. 이로 인해 수문장, 아콩, 솔라 등 차별화된 개성을 가진 캐릭터들조차 기본 디자인의 지나친 단순함 때문에 파트 2에서 등장한 신 캐릭터들에 비해 인기가 저조하다.

더러운 개그 코드
롱키의 냄새의 정령이나 팔라의 독소 방귀처럼 화장실 유머가 반복적으로 등장하여 불쾌감을 호소하는 시청자가 적지 않다. 게다가 단순한 개그로 그치지 않고 이야기 전개에 중요하게 영향을 끼친다는 점에서 더욱 문제로 지적된다.

파트 분배로 인한 급전개
시즌 1과 달리 완전히 다른 두 스토리를 각각 한 파트 만에 마무리 지으려 했기에 급전개가 불가피했고, 이로 인해 전개가 난잡해 몰입하기 어렵다는 지적이 있다.

분량 문제로 인한 신 캐릭터 어필 실패
파트 2의 신 캐릭터들은 디자인과 캐릭터성 면에서는 비교적 좋은 평가를 받았다. 그러나 상술한 급전개 문제 때문에 캐릭터들이 개성을 제대로 어필할 틈이 없었다.[6] 시즌 1의 DV7은 파트 1부터 꾸준히 복선이 있었고, 각 멤버의 서사 또한 탄탄했다는 점에서 비교된다.[7]

희생의 의미 퇴색
시즌 1 48화에서 친구들을 구하기 위해 대마법을 사용한 대가로 아기가 된 포포의 감동적인 희생이 퇴색되었다는 비판이 있다. 바로 다음 화인 49화 특별편에서 포포가 팔라의 포션을 마시고 곧바로 원래 모습으로 돌아왔기 때문(...). 불과 1화 만에 원래대로 돌아온 것도 문제지만, 해결법 역시 너무 간단해서 전 화 엔딩이 주었던 여운을 크게 반감시켰다는 평.
또한 공식 설정상 거대화 상태에서 대마법을 쓰면 부작용이 없다는 점[8]이 설정집에서 밝혀졌는데, 이는 시즌 2 파트 2에서 추가된 '거대화의 정령'만 있다면 제약 없이 대마법을 남발할 수 있게 됨을 의미하며 "소중한 걸 지키기 위해 자신까지 희생할 수 있는 아름답고 숭고한 정신을 발휘해야만 비로소 대마법을 쓸 수 있다"라는 포포의 대사마저 무의미하게 만든다.

정령과 포스링
정령의 힘을 끌어다 쓰는 포스링이라는 아이템이 새롭게 추가되었다. 문제는 이 포스링이 사용할 때 페널티가 없다시피 하고 필요할 때 아무 능력이나 막 쓸 수 있는 데우스 엑스 마키나처럼 작용하여, 위기상황마다 적절한 능력을 가진 포스링으로 일을 쉽게 해결해 버린다는 것이다. 게다가 일부 포스링은 런닝맨들의 기존 능력이나 초능력 배틀에서 나왔던 능력과 겹친다.

파워 인플레이션
포스링 능력이 추가되면서 시즌 1에서 중요한 비중을 차지했던 마테리온의 위상이 크게 추락했다. 생명의 근원이자 기나긴 종족 전쟁의 원인이었던 마테리온이 마누스의 포스링 능력 한 번에 간단히 원상복구되며, 아예 후반부에서는 리우가 "마테리온보다 정령의 힘이 강하기 때문에 균열을 막을 수 있다"고 언급한다.

권선징악의 부재 및 억지 갱생
시즌 1에서 인과응보의 최후를 맞이한 줄 알았던 챠밍골드와 말라 박사가 멀쩡히 재등장하며 끝내 아무런 죗값도 치르지 않은 채 결말이 났다. 이들은 '납치, 살인, 인체 실험까지 저지른 악질 범죄자'들이다. 그런데 말라는 별다른 계기 없이 개과천선해 주인공 편에 붙어버린다. 이에 차라리 열차 도둑 부자나 프랑크 형사가 개과천선하는 편이 더 나았을 것이라는 반 진담 우스갯소리도 나왔다.
또한 파트 2의 메인 악역인 레오 왕가와 그 부하들 역시 막판에 가서 급작스럽게 교화되고, 별다른 처벌 없이 그냥 퇴장하는 억지 갱생을 보여주었다.[9]

액션씬 퀄리티 저하
연출력이 시즌 1에 비해 전반적으로 크게 떨어졌다는 평이 많다. 특히 샨과 마칸의 전투가 등장하는 시즌 1 42화와 시즌 2 26화를 비교해보면 차이가 뚜렷하게 느껴진다.[10]

2.3. 총평

런닝맨판 소포모어 징크스로 정리되는데, 긍정적 평가와 부정적 평가의 분량을 비교해 보면 2기의 작품성이 1기에 비하면 얼마나 낮은지 쉽게 알 수 있다. 1기가 단점이 새발의 피였다면 2기는 장점이 새발의 피에 가까운 정도이기 때문에 기존 팬들도 1기에 매료되어 팬이 되었다면 되도록 2기를 보지 않는 것을 추천한다.[11] 그나마 Part 1은 1기엔 못 미쳐도 그럭저럭 괜찮은 느낌이지만, Part 2에서 거의 모든 문제점이 심화되었다.

위의 문제점들은 한국뿐만 아니라 외국 팬들 사이에서도 거론된 문제점들이다. 공통적으로 파트 1은 그럭저럭 괜찮았으나, 파트 2는 엉망이었다는 반응이 많다.

이로서 팬들은 2기가 나온다는 소식에 걱정 반, 기대 반으로 기다려 왔으나, 결국 1기를 넘지 못한 속편이 되었다.

[1] 물론 그때도 롱키, 팔라, 포포는 비교적 적게 모습을 비추긴 했으나, 애초에 원 예능에서도 최약체라고 불리던 조합이니 이 정도는 오히려 고증을 잘 지킨 거였다.[2] 앞서 말했던 최약체 콤비보다도 훨씬 암울한데, 활약은 모두 샨과 마칸이 맡았고, 심지어 기절했다 깨어나 상황 파악을 하다가 갑자기 감옥이 무너져내리는 바람에 등장이 끝나게 되는 41화에선 1분도 등장하지 않는다.[3] 팀전에서 백신을 먹지 않아 미요만 승점을 얻은 거라면 오류가 아니지만, 작중에 그런 조건에 대한 언급은 없었다.[4] 리우, 쿠가도 포함.[5] 다들 부상당했는데 가이 혼자만 멀쩡했던 점, 다른 멤버들은 작동시키지 못한 승강기를 가이가 타자마자 움직인 점. 이를 리우, 롱키, 포포가 직접 목격했음에도 불구하고 아무도 의문을 제기하지 않는다.[6] 발터와 발리언트 세 명은 과거사나 레오족을 따르는 동기가 전혀 밝혀지지 않은 채 단순히 런닝맨을 방해하는 적으로만 등장하다 퇴장했다.[7] 다만 이 역시 본편이 아닌 설정집을 통해서만 서사가 밝혀졌다는 문제점은 있다.[8] 초능력 배틀에서 포포가 시간마법을 썼음에도 아기가 되지 않았던 이유[9] 그나마 레프나르도는 왕국으로 돌아가 벌을 받겠다고 이야기한다.[10] 두 시즌 간 몰입감의 차이에서 비롯된 문제라는 의견도 있다.[11] 그래도 궁금해서 보고 싶다면 Part 1까지만 시청하는 것을 권장하는 편이다. Part 2를 혹평한 팬들 중에서도 Part 1만큼은 재미있게 본 사람들이 많기 때문.
