1. 블랙윈터

눈보라가 치면서도 청명하게 푸른 보름달이 뜬 날의 밤을 말한다. 눈과 달이 싸우는 것마냥 많은 눈이 오는데도 달이 아주 선명하게 보이는 이상한 밤이라고 한다.

이날 밤은 신이 인간을 정화시키기 위해 깨끗한 의식을 치르는 시간이다. 따라서 이 밤에 죄를 지으면 무서운 죗값을 받게 된다. 무슨 일이 있어도 죄를 지어서는 안된다고 한다.

작중 주인공들은 힘든 일을 유난히 겨울에 많이 겪는데, '블랙윈터', 즉 '까만 겨울'은 주인공들이 겨울을 견디기 힘든 계절로 받아들인다는 상징이기도 하다. 결말부에서 겨울을 더이상 힘든 계절이 아닌 따뜻한 계절로 받아들이게 된다. 따라서 마지막화의 부제는 '하얀 겨울'이다.

2. 지명

2.1. 백송골

조선의 마을 이름이다. 본래 외국 사신들이 백송골을 통해 입국하여 도성으로 이동했다. 왕이 이들의 편의를 위해 마을의 산에 서양식 석조 건물을 지어주었다. 한때는 이 건물이 마을의 자랑거리였다. 그러나 어느 순간부터 귀빈들은 다른 곳을 통해 도성으로 이동하게 되었고, 상인들만이 드나드는 곳이 되면서 자연히 석조 건물은 폐가가 되었다.

약초가 많이 나는 마을로 유명하다.

2.2. 샹 폴드 블레어 마을

프랑스의 마을 이름이다. 블리앙 마을이라고도 불린다. 상당히 외진 마을인데, 전염병이 돌아 많은 사람들이 죽고 출입이 폐쇄된 적이 있다. 이때 에몬 신부가 마을에 나타나 마을 사람 한 명을 사제로 바쳐 기도를 계속하면 마을을 살릴 수 있다고 주장하였고, 그 사제로 유안을 골랐다. 실제로 유안이 사제로 가 기도를 한 지 얼마 되지 않아 전염병이 잠깐 사그라들었고, 그는 마을에서 신과 같은 존재로 칭송받았다. 그러나 유안 사제는 결국 전염병으로 부모님을 잃게 되었고, 세간에는 에몬이 고아가 된 유안을 거두었다고 알려져있다.

마을에는 블리앙 성당이라는 비워진 성당이 있다. 에몬과 유안은 그곳에서 기도를 계속했다. 가끔 에몬은 성당 지하실에서 깊은 기도를 한다며 문을 잠그고 며칠간 밖으로 나오지 않곤 했다. 그러나 에몬 신부는 유안 사제에게 죽임을 당했고, 유안 사제는 순식간에 은혜를 저버린 악마가 되어 쫓기게 된다. 유안 사제가 마녀와 함께 머물던 은신처는 불경하다며 불에 태워지고 집터만이 남아있다.

마을 이름은 수백년이 지나 유안이 다시 찾았을 때에도 그대로 유지되고있다. 유안 사제 사건 이후 블리앙 성당은 저주 종이로 유명한 성당이 되었다. 저주 종이는 총 3장이라고 하는데 한 장만이 성당 기도실에 남아있고, 한 장은 까마귀 서식지에서 누군가가 발견해 가져갔다고 하며, 한 장은 유안 사제가 가져갔다는 추측이 돌고 있다고 한다. 많은 사람들이 저주 종이를 보기 위해 성당을 찾았지만 종이를 보거나 만지면 병에 걸리거나 저주를 받는다는 소문이 돌고부터 발길이 끊겼다.

2.3. 루마르크

프랑스의 마을 이름이다. 샹 폴드 블레어 마을보다 남쪽에 위치해있다. 근처에 군부대가 있는데, 제러드 셰퍼가 이 부대 소속의 대장이었다. 제러드 부부는 이 마을에 작은 터전을 잡고 살았다. 제러드 장군이 전사한 후 제러드 부인이 무덤가에 찾아가 울다가 죽었다는 전설이 전해진다. 제러드의 전사는 나중에서야 권력에 눈이 먼 부하의 소행으로 밝혀진다.[1]

3. 동화월

프랑스 소재의 바위섬 위 저택이다. 바위섬은 나무, 분재, 수석으로 꾸며져있으며, 시설의 모양새는 동양의 각 나라에서 따왔다.

3.1. 운영 목적

최초에는 세피너스 가문이 동양인의 외모에 흥미를 가지고 만든 것으로 추정되며, 동양 아이들을 구경거리로 만들어 소비한 콤프라치코스에 비견된다.

동화월이라는 명칭은 시설의 목적을 반영하여 지은 것으로, 동쪽의 꽃(東花)+wall(성벽)이라는 뜻이다. 선착장과 아주 긴 외길이 유일한 통로인데, 늘 안개가 껴있어 분위기도 우중충하다. 안개가 심한 날엔 외길 마저 사라진다.

현재는 운영 목적이 변질되어 운영 주체인 발렌이 루비의 저주를 풀 수 있는 동양인 제물을 찾기 위해 동화월의 시스템을 이용하고 있으나, 동양인의 외모에 관심을 갖는 손님들이 이곳을 찾는다는 점은 변하지 않았다.

3.2. 운영 방식

3.2.1. 납치

시설 내 동양인들은 적법하게 고용된 이들이 아니라 동양 각국에서 납치해온 사람들이다. 처음에는 어른들이 아이들보다 더 많았지만 쉽게 길들여지지 않고 자주 죽어버리니 아예 아이들만을 데리고 오게 되었으며, 성별은 가리지 않는다. 아이들이 나이를 먹으면 다른 곳으로 보내는데, 그곳이 어딘지는 밝혀진 바가 없다.

동양인이라면 국적을 가리지 않고 데려왔지만 현재 동화월의 운영을 맡고 있는 발렌은 조선 아이들이 길들이기 어렵다는 이유로 잘 데려오지 않아서 남아있는 조선 아이는 화예와 설이 뿐이다. 그마저도 화예 이후로는 아예 아이들을 납치해서 데려오는 일을 멈추어서 더이상의 유입은 없다. 다만 발렌이 좋은 의도로 납치를 멈춘 것이 절대 아니고, 애초에 그럴 위인도 아니다. 발렌은 조상들에 비해서 동화월의 운영에 큰 관심이 없다. 그러나 발렌에게 어떤 목적이 생겼고, 그 목적을 달성하기 위해서는 동화월의 동양 아이들이 도구적으로 쓰여야한다. 아무나 조건을 만족하지는 못하기 때문에 동양에 와서 아이들을 납치할 때 목적을 충족시켜줄만한 아이들을 선별하고 섞어서 납치해왔고, 그러다 드디어 가장 적합해 보이는 인물인 화예를 찾아낸 것이기에 더이상 아이들을 납치하는 수고를 들일 이유가 없을 뿐이다.[2]

3.2.2. 학대

납치당한 이들을 길들이는 방법이 상상을 초월하는데, 매질은 기본이고 화예의 경우는 아예 발가벗긴 채 손을 묶고 위생 상태가 의심되는 지하실에 가둬버렸다. 도망치는 것도 소용이 없는 것이, 도망치다가 발각되면 발을 잘라서 물에 던진다. 같은 방을 사용하는 아이에게 감시자 역할을 부여해두는데, 이때 도망친 아이만 발을 자르지 않고 감시자의 발도 함께 잘라서 물에 던져버린다. 그렇게 서로가 서로를 감시할 수밖에 없는 환경을 조성한다. 시설이 바위섬 위에 있는 이유 역시 아이들이 도망칠 수 없게 만들기 위함이다. 어쩌다 탈출에 성공한다 해도 외길 건너에는 세피너스 일가의 사람이 있기 때문에 그들 손에 죽는다. 현생이 이정도로 참담하니 아이들만의 순수한 사고가 담긴 내세관을 만들게 되었다. 아이들은 물에 몸을 던져 죽으면 그때는 자유로운 몸이 될 수 있다고 믿고 있으며, 그렇게 죽는 것을 '인어'가 된다고 말한다.

말을 잘 듣는 아이들도 령처럼 세피너스 가문의 순혈주의, 백인우월주의, 인종차별성 경멸에 시달리며, 그런 와중에 동양 아이들을 구경거리 취급하는 인간들을 극진히 대접해야한다. 재수가 없어 발렌, 루비 남매처럼 세피너스 일가들 중에서도 성격이 악독하기로 손꼽히는 사람을 만나면 말을 아무리 잘 들어도 온갖 핑계를 갖다 붙여서 해하려 한다.

3.2.3. 접대

화이트 라이온 연대의 망토

세피너스 일가를 추종하는 '화이트 라이온' 연대가 존재한다. 이들은 흰색으로 사자를 그려놓은 망토를 입고 다닌다. 동화월의 최고 손님으로 대접받는다. 이 사람들이 방문한 날에는 눈에 띄는 행동을 하면 안되며, 아이가 아프더라도 죽기 직전만 아니면 불러내서 접대를 시킨다.

이곳에서는 아이들을 본래 이름으로 부르지 않는 대신 꽃 이름을 부여한다. 화예는 '릴리', 설이는 '데이지'였고, 최고 연장자인 아이는 '칸나'다. 그 외 '바이올렛', '자스민'이 대사로만 등장한다. 이름을 빼앗아 본래의 정체성을 말살하고 겨우 꺾어도 될 꽃 한 송이 정도로 취급한다는 것이 드러난다.

손님을 접대하고 언어로써 아이들의 정신을 쉽게 지배할 목적으로 각자의 모국어를 쓰지 못하도록 하며, 불어 사용만을 허용한다. 예외적으로 령, 칸나처럼 직책이 좀 높은 아이들은 불어 외에도 여러 가지 언어를 강제로 배우게했는데, 이는 갓 잡혀와서 프랑스어를 모를 수밖에 없는 어린 아이들과 소통하고 그들을 빨리 길들이기 위함이다. 직접적으로 서술된 조선어, 청나라어는 당연하고 아이들의 고향이 동양로 한정되어 있었으므로 그에 맞게 각종 동양 언어들을 배우게 했을 것인데,[3] 동양의 언어들은 로망스/라틴어 계열의 언어와 다르게 한자만을 공유할 뿐 인접한 지역임에도 언어간의 차이가 매우 커서 배움의 과정이 매우 고됐을 것이다.

유럽의 언어들은 5~6개국어 구사자도 더러 있을 정도로 공통점이 많아 서로의 언어를 배우기 쉽기로 알려져있다. 설사 유럽의 언어를 배울 때조차 짧은 기간에 여러 언어를 배우는 것은 언어 혼란이 올 여지가 높고, 배워야할 언어가 많을 수록 언어별 구사력은 크게 떨어질 수밖에 없다.

동양의 언어들은 지리적으로 매우 근접한 곳에서 사용되는 언어임에도 서로의 언어를 배우기가 힘들다. 한자를 공유하여 한자 문화권을 형성한 지역 마저도 언어 차이가 매우 크다는 독특한 특징이 있다. 그나마 어순과 교착어라는 특성을 공유하는 한국어와 일본어조차도 그 외 공통점이 매우 적어 아예 비교언어학적 고립어로 분류되어있어 서로의 언어를 배우기가 오래 걸리는 편인데, 칸나의 모국어인 청나라어는 교착어에 들어가지도 않고(언어유형학적 고립어) 어순도 아예 다르다. 동화월은 언어 교육을 체계적으로 하는 곳이 아니며, 학대하고 착취해서 빠르게 익히도록 재촉했을 곳이므로 칸나의 상급자가 칸나를 잘 가르쳐주는 일이 없었더라면 조선어를 70~80%라도 구사하기가 쉽지 않았을 것이다.

그나마 한자 문화권 국가 출신의 아이라면 필담으로 조금이나마 소통이 가능할 수 있으나, 나라마다 한자의 뜻이나 종류가 다르고 사용되는 한자어 표현도 달라서 한자를 안다고 해도 한계가 있다. 게다가 납치 이후 현지에서의 공론화나 감시 강화를 피하기 위해 신분이 변변찮은 아이들을 주로 납치했기 때문에 교육 수준이 높지 않을 수도 있다. 한자는 문해율에 있어 불리하고, 칸나 또한 교육 수준이 낮은 아이일 가능성을 배제할 수 없으므로 이러한 소통방식은 한계가 크다. 문자 없이 언어를 배워야했거나 문자부터 익혀야했다면 언어를 익히는 데에 드는 시간은 곱절로 소요된다. 결국 이 설정을 이해할 때 이러한 배경을 알고 있다면 동화월이 얼마나 몰상식한 곳인지는 금방 엿볼 수 있다.

주인과 검은 짐승은 거리에 상관 없이 쌍방 의사소통이 가능하다.
악마의 저주에서 벗어나면 쌍방 의사소통은 불가능해진다.

싯딤나무 반지는 악마가 주인을 해하려할 때 주인을 보호하는 역할을 한다.

유안의 눈이 붉게 변할 때, 반대로 보라색으로 돌아올 때 모두 유안을 보호했다.
유안이 가지고 있는 저주의 종이가 유안을 지배하려 하는 것을 막아주었다.

5. 환생론

기본적으로 모든 사람은 한 번의 생만이 주어진다. 해사, 화예, 무호가 두 번의 생을 살게 된 것은 유안에게 얽힌 저주 때문이다. 유안에게는 영생을 지속하는 동안, 유안이 사랑하는 사람들이 계속 새롭게 태어나 전생과 비슷한 삶의 굴레를 벗어나지 못하고 고통받는다는 저주가 있다. 이 때문에 헤시아, 사라, 제러드가 해사, 화예, 무호로 다시 태어나 비슷한 생을 반복하게 되었고, 전생에서와 비슷한 사람을 현생에서도 만나게 된 것 뿐이다. 따라서 김건은 알레이스의 환생이 아니며, 해사의 외삼촌 가족도 타샤 가족의 환생이 아니다. 알레이스와 타샤의 가족은 이미 한 번의 생을 끝냈으므로 더이상 이 세상에 나타나지 않는다.

저주에 따라 환생한 이들은 전생과 비슷한 삶을 살지만 완전히 똑같지는 않다. 또한 몇 가지 특징의 경우 전생과 아예 다르기도 하다. 그 다른 특징 역시 전생에서 후회했던 것이 현생에서 바뀌어서 나타난 것이므로 엄밀하게는 관련있는 것이 맞다.
